I LOVE my Ontario 12" camp machete, is short and It has a good thickness and weight and a blunt spot near the start of the Edge to place two fingers and control cut working
During our extensive CovID long-downs, I took on making bush craft & draw knives, rebuilding axes, tomahawks, and the like. I found the processes to be very interesting, studies metallurgy somewhat, doing heat treating, making Micarta handles, turning others from wood. making leather sheaths, etc. Even, making tools to assist withe the different processes, can be very satisfying to achieve the development of so many useful tools.
All of my axes and machetes have a convex grind. I do find them easier to sharpen at home or in the field. My smaller knives are all scandi or chisel, but I almost always sharpen them at home because I can take my time with them. As far as chisel grinds...for anyone else who's mixed-handed...I really like them. I use right-handed chisel grinds because I get power in my right hand and dexterity in my left.
G'day day Mr.Salyer. Now you even do things like our dad does, making something out of something & making it better & functional. That slight re-curve gave it a cool look. When making a sheath do incorporate a holder for the ferro rod. As for that extra cut-off bit, perhaps you can make an Ulu with it & somehow incorporate it to the sheath too. A challenge if you wish to accept it. If our dad can make one, you can do it too. Looking forward to the sheath making vid.
I prefer short machetes like the Tramontina Latin Machetes with a 10" or 12" blade. I did reshaped the blade of a longer one and made it into a short one some 25+ years ago. On my travels in Colombia and Thailand I noticed that most people use the shorter ones. I don't bring a machete to these countries but just buy a local one. Cut of the top of a plastic bottle, flatten it and that acts as a protective sleeve for carrying inside my backpack. A scandi to zero grind is kinda hard to maintain most of all in the field. You have to remove a lot of metal compared to a secondary V edge or convex. I kinda give all my user fixed blades a (small) secondary convex for this reason. Good video and I think you should consider taking a short machete into production.
I intentionally give almost all my knives and axes convex edge. The durable edge is perfect for longer trips in the woods, and I find it easier to get thinner feathers on my feather sticks.
Love the projects you do. A great little knife you made. Your machete reminds me of a Martindale Paratrooper that I’ve had for over 25 years. I think your handle would be more comfortable though. And the Martindale has wood scales. I’ve been thinking about putting Micarta scales on it but I could just buy one of your machetes instead. 😎
Hey Jason can you do a video on your biodiesel setup and the process. I’m thinking of doing something similar but for my oil furnace to maybe save some money
For real on the scandi thing. They're great for bushcraft but not everything is bushcraft. Secondly, flat grinds are killer for bushcraft too but soooooo much better for everything else.
Check out a product called speedy sharp, I don’t know if you’ve ever used one, but I swear by these for field sharpening. Throw in a ceramic rod and you can get a nice edge.

Dang Good Job I must say. Thanks for Sharing. Stay Safe.
My favorite machete is short. Probably 14 to16 inch blade length. One on favorite garden tools.

Really good story about what you learned and now use today from your gran. Thanks.
Thanks for listening!
Nice story the relationship you had with your papaw and how it shaped your life. Like that modification on the machete
I like the shorter blade you should definitely bring that into production. I would like to have one of both!
I’d definitely be interested in one . I had a Schrade Mimi 14 when they made them and loved it I took the guard off it was my favorite belt carry

Great ideas! The sheath video will post today or tomorrow.
Nice job. Looks very cool.

great work... really good looking machete... love the reminiscing... #algobuster

I've used smaller machetes for years and enjoy them
Put the two in a side by side show down to see which one is better suited to meet all your needs if you could only choose one
You should coordinate a short tour of Bear Forest Knives. It would be interesting to see how he gets the On 3 patina.
Love that idea!
Love the projects you do.

It's a ON Three Leku!
Put it in production and DONT PUT A SCANDI GRIND ON IT !!!
For real on the scandi thing. They're great for bushcraft but not everything is bushcraft. Secondly, flat grinds are killer for bushcraft too but soooooo much better for everything else.
It's not a kitchen knife ladies
And now to take that piece you removed and make another ulu.
Hmmmmmm…….
Keep up the great work
Thanks, will do!
MICRO-MACHETE 😁
I think you should call it the minchete!!!
Looks good, thanks for sharing, YAH bless brother !
Congrats! You made a Junglas. lol
Pretty close huh?
@@ONThree Nothing wrong with that, I have 2 Junglas's. Are these strong enough to baton some wood? They're a hell of a lot cheaper
Great story man
Glad you enjoyed it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Cool knaf.
So skilled. Where do I buy one?
Links in description.
Nice
Thanks

I’ll check it out!
will you be at Georgia bushcraft in November? and will you be bringing some BFK knives to sell?
I should be there and yes, Bear Forest Knives will most likely be there as well.
is that a jack russel doggy
Nobody knows what Maggie is.
👊🏻👍🏻🐾
easy to sharpen but holds a good edge, that is just a dumb thing to say
You made a lettuce harvesting knife
Why?
What a dumb comment to leave.
Single edge, no point... Cold steels Mainz Gladius is a better option.
