How to Make a Downspout Garden / Common Questions / Gutter Garden / DIY Hydroponics
My video on how to make the downspout grow box is kind of old and a little vague. I get a lot of questions so I will be answering them in the next few videos. This is part two where we will discuss spacing and drilling the holes and an easy alternative to heating and bending the ends. After that I will unbox a food grade NFT channel that I had ordered a few months back and never opened.

One tip from a carpenter... just like your drill, mount your saw blade backwards to prevent chipping. Great videos keep up the good work.
Awww man, you are awesome. I did have a few chip. Appreciate that!!!🖒🖒
good tip 🙂
Also a carpenter, also came to say the same thing. Glad to see someone else already posted this.
What size is that rain gutter? Only ones o could find are 3”x 2 1/4”
Just another idea for the ends that worked really well for me and VERY easy. After you cut your holes and clean out the downspout, take your pieces inside, bring a big pot of water to almost boiling....tilt the spout and just dip the bottom of the spout in the water for about 15+ seconds and place on counter with bottom up. With a gloved hand, make a fist and push down on end and mold. May have to double dip if needed.
Awesome, I am going to try that!! You rock! 😎👊🔥🔥
Love this idea!!
Yes Sir sometimes we over look the easy ways of doing things. With you showing and teaching each step like this makes it where anyone can do it. Awesome how to series ya doing here buddy!
Thanks CB. I was spending a lot of time answering the same questions over and over. Now I will have a playlist to point them to if they do not find it themselves.
I just made eight of the 30" units last night. Another Pro Tip for your next video update......I also made a similar wooden jig (like the one you use to hold the spout to bend the ends). I found that using it to hold the entire grow box while drilling the 1 7/8" holes worked fantastic. It kept the downspout stationary while drilling the holes - keeping it from moving or spinning. Safer and easier for everyone!
That is awesome!! Also, what a great tip, thanks so much!!😎🖒 Keep us updated.
Your so kind with your time. Thank you. I plan on making one. The only thing different I would try it melting one end and installing a end piece on the other end. Plus I would spray pain outside to reduce chance of light causing algae
Sounds great! People send me lots of pictures of how they changed things up to suit their needs. Love it😎🖒🌱
Nice of you to go through all the steps in such detail!!
No problem. In the long run it will dave me from answering a lot of questions repeatedly. Thank you 😎🤘
🤣🤣🤣 Should have watched it again, I folded the ends before making the holes. I also cut at three feet instead of thirty inches, but I just started so no big deal. Thank you for the videos!
Lol, I got a bunch of odd pieces too from experimenting. Hope you enjoy gardening like this. Have fun!
I’m over in Gainesville. Florida’s rough in the summer, I’m putting my little garden inside. Going to start a little hydroponic 18x48x70 shelf. You’ve inspired me.
Awesome DJ!!
Been awhile since I left that comment, running that hole saw backwards. Glad to see it came in handy.
Thanks for sharing the alternative to buying a heat gun. I'm so glad you have an Etsy store, much easier! 😁
Thank you Cindy, really appreciate your support. 😎🤘🌱🌱
I've watched several of your videos, but for this one it would be super nice if you listed the sizes for both the gutter being used as the size of the size of the hole you're making.
You're awesome. Glad I found your channel. Looking forward to your wife's crafts. "Be the change." "Keep on growing." Love it.
Thank you Rina, so good to have you here! Have an awesome week!
I hope you'll find this a Huge help for you and everybody who is concerned about the spouts not being food grade. Mix good grade silicone add water and pour on the inside of the spouts turning and twisting covering that hole inside of the spout let it dry and then it's coated and food grade. 🕺💃🕺🌄😊😲😮😲
I live in an apartment and don't have any of those tools. Going to using shallow plastic bin and pool noodles. Fingers crossed. But I love the ones he made look - very modern.
Awesome! I have a playlist where I just use Tupperware containers.
Great tip on the Hole Saw direction. I also some times drill pilot hole on normal drill.
Yes, i have been drilling a slightly bigger pilot hole so the plastic disc does not get stuck on my hole saw. 🖒
At the store Dollar Tree I found some sponges by Scrub buddies that were 3.35in x 2.75 in x 1.7 in that you could squeeze and fit into your 2 x 3 in elbow really nice. Now waiting for the aquarium silicone to come in to put together. Thanks for your great videos.
Great tip!
Great videos, watched all three, love the extra helpful tips, especially liked reversing the drill. Liked and subscribed.
Thank you! Have an awesome week!
Wow...do those look great or what! Nice job.
Thanks, have an awesome day! 😎🤘
Thanks for sharing your new ideas
Thank you Angela! 😎🖑🌱
Use pvc pipe cement not silicone, its sold next to the water pipes cheap and easy. It welds the two pieces into one.(There may be cases where you don't want a permanent bond, but even silicone has many types of sealant and adhesive.)
Also most people don't understand what "food grade" actually means. There are several different categories from bulk quantity food additives, down through "incidental contact" which basically means it should not be in normal contact with food but can be used in the same building where food is made because people won't die from accidental contact, and the limit for escaped contaminated food following an "incident" is only about 5ppm.
This doesn't necessarily mean the item is generally unsafe but the manufacturer didn't want to pay for a higher certification(and insurance) because the market for the item doesn't need it.
Ingenious!! I absolutely love it! Im texting my husband NOW to bring what I need to make it!! Thanks.
Awesome, happy gardening 😎🌱🌱🌱
I did text my husband and I think he's on board!!! Btw, I have never subscribed to ANYTHING before you. You're my new best friend! lol (I think I'll try strawberries)
Great info video for us dummies. NOW, I for one, would enjoy seeing the info video on how to make that Hydro-tin open flow grow bin you made using a cement tub, to grow those Leggie veggies to put in these Downspout grow boxes. Also, what size pump did you use?
I set a new one up Richard, just have to film and edit. I use a small fountain pump that has a rise of 2'.
One tip, put a 1 by 2 lumber inside the tube to avoid drill the bottom
Thanks David!
Making it look nice and easy Mike! Interesting to see your heating jig in the next episode. -Bob...
Thanks Bob. Had a lot to make, jig works good.
Just found your channel and want to have a go at DIY Hydrophonic growing on a budget here in England This is a game changer!
Many thanks! (Subbed btw!)
Awesome, really appreciate it Andy!!
Quick form tip. A pot of near boiling water will work to heat the bottom of the pipe then mold on the jar.
just realized this is a older video my bad lol... still good info!
I like the attitude! If you can’t do something one way(heat bending) then find another solution!
Want to try to make it feasible for everyone. Thanks much Jeannie 😎🤘🌱
Thanks for the video! I'm setting up an aquaponics system and was looking at a cheap way to do NFT. Ill probably go with a regular gutter and fill it with gravel since that's cheaper here and bigger
Cool deal! Keep us posted! 😎🖒🌱🌱🌱🌱
ah foam to fill the ends - answers my question from last video - cool.
Cool deal! Thanks for watching 😎🖒
I enjoy seeing your use of materials. I always ask myself, "Is it food grade? Will it leach something into the plants?" Thanks for your videos.
Only if it heats up, by then the plants will die. Keep the nutrients cool. There are also food grade NFT channels available.
These are such cool videos - thank you!
😎🖒🌱🌱🌱
nice work! Thanks for showing us all the details!
No problem, I love to share!
I wonder if it's safe to use those vinyl downsprout. Should we be concerned with chemical leaching into the water and taken up by the plants?
Watch this but decide for yourself.

Thanks for sharing!
😎🖒🌱
Yes, I can do this!
Just found you! Thanks for sharing. A unique idea. How large are those holes?
Awesome! 2' each.
Slip a 2x4 into the gutter before drilling to prevent puncturing through the bottom.
You ROCK!!!! Thank you
Hi Mike in England we only have 65mm (2 and half inches) square down pipes, Could you please tell me what drill cutter I need and how far apart I make the holes. Thank you
About 2" holes, 2" apart (4" on center). If you are using net cups, make sure the hole is small enough to hold the lip of the cup.
Annette Rose. I am in England as well, do a Google search for "white plastic ducting" (used for kitchen extraction)
It's sold at Tool station, Wickes and B&Q.
Should bring up a similar specification to what Mike is using.
There are ends as well so don't even have to bother with a heat gun!
I am going to try one on the fence in the garden!
@@andynightingale7335 Alternative is to use square downpipe, Wickes (432025) 2.5m for 5.50
If you DO end up going with the end adapters, Is there a reason why those couldn’t be used as additional plants spots? Maybe using a few noodles bits side by side? In lieu of covering up.
Yes, they definitely could. The shape is just awkward and covering them took about two seconds, lol. Styrofoam may do nicely too.
thank you
thankyou very much
put a small hole in the side of the downspout where you want the max water line to be
What’s the difference in the folding versus the curved taper? I ask because I haven’t watched a video yet about how you water these
I just lift a plant and add water. The curved elbow is easier to make, just a little silicone whereas the folded one needs to be heated and bent.
Mike.....what are the nutrients that you put in them? And how often do they need it?
Here you go. Keep your containers between 1/2 and 3/4 full all the time.
ua-cam.com/video/SaN6Dlf2hCg/v-deo.html
How often you change that water? Also why you have pumps and all other hose connections with other setup?
Rarely change. Just refill. Both kinds of systems work.
I would like to know when the water level is low in the pipe do you add more water or the chemicals? and how much.
Iadd more nutrient solution. Keep it between 1/2 to 3/4 full.
How do you add the solution? Pull a plant out and pour it in that hole?
Yes, exactly. Or you can leave one plant out and just cover it with an empty pool noodle.
Hi how’s it going? Enjoy watching your channel. I was wondering. Can I do 15’ in long pvc system with the static water process? I noticed you usually just do 4’ sections. Also, what is the best nutrients to start with? Much appreciate if you could help. Thanks!
Yes, I had 8' ones that worked great. The smaller ones are easy to move. I only use Masterblend now.
a grinder blade might work well for plastic
I don’t understand with that stagnant water do you have to replace it often or does it not get all skanky?
No, just refill. Keep light out.
@@KeepOnGrowin thank you. I think I will try a single section and use my indoor grow lights to givebit a shot. Hopefully once I figure that out I’ll be able to create something to grow some fodder for my chickens without it getting all nasty really appreciate the work you put in it it’s very helpful for money and again I appreciate it
I cannot get 3x4 downspouts but only 2x3. What can I grow in them? Only leafy veggies?
Use them for starts and use the bucket system I am growing in now, check the new videos.
While watching I was thinking a scrap piece of wood inside the tube while drilling would help prevent the possibility of a hole in the bottom.
That is an excellent idea!
is there a method of doing a 45 degree bend for corner project?
Hmmm, i don't think so.
The thing is that if you want to make three downspout planter, a heat gun (a cheap one) will be cheaper than you buying all the end elbow pieces.
True😎🤘🌱
hey why your video cutoff at the start of the heat gun process, it switched to a frog and a guy sipping tea clip?
You need to go to pt 3: ua-cam.com/video/0YaW_xW9TL4/v-deo.html
whats the name of the white attachment on the drill to make the holes?
It is called a hole saw
what size downspout do you use? I bought 3 x 2 1/4 downspout, is it wrong size? Should I use a 4x3 instead?
I answered you on the other post. 😎🖒
Turn the blade backwards while cutting plastics ,siding
Where can you get these food grade downspouts?
Hydroponic suppliers have nft channels
Crafty work
Thanx
😎🖒🌱
great content...sound in the background is distracting...blessings
What size hole saw is that… I thought you said 1 inch and 7/8, but I'm not sure. Can you please confirm? Thank you.
Yes, so a 2" net cup fits in if I want to use one. If not, anything around 2" works.
@@KeepOnGrowin . Thanks Mike
A piece of black plastic from a trash bag and a ziptie closes the downspout 90s off from the light very easily.
As for the chop saw blade just turn it backwards. It’ll still cut clean.
Thank you. A carpenter told me that and it works great. 🖒🖒
What size did you use to make the holes ?
2"
what size is the dimension of the cicle tool?
2 inch
Do you sell them too?
Yes, there is a link in the description. BOGO sale right now. (Half off the 2 pk)
Turn you blade so it runs backwards when cutting plastic
What size drill bit?
2"
Can i use a hack saw?
Yes, I started with one.😎🖒
Very ni6
You're amazing ^_^
Thank you!
Turn the saw blade backwards and it will not chip out the plastic
Yes, thanks. Works like a charm.
💕💕💕💕
Its easy to just reverse the round blade to cut plastic... an old trick
Yes, thank you. Someone suggested that a while back and it works like a charm. I need to find his comment and say thanks. Thank you again, it really helps.
Safety First!!
😎🖒
What is the white round piece that you are using to drill the holes
It is called a hole saw for a drill.
@@KeepOnGrowin Thank you. You mentioned that you should use a food safe caulk when sealing the end pieces if you decide to add the elbows instead of bending the ends. Do you know a safe brand. I am having difficulty locating it
If you're making more than a couple, it's cheaper to buy a heat gun
