Yeah but it is a fucking pain in the ass if you have never done it before, can not find any shop manuals on how to do it and do not own some of the tools needed. So just get a diff from a car that has been totaled and you're good to go within 2 hours.
How to recognise you: 1- the working table 2- black plastic gloves 3- the little smiling tattoo 4- the edition 5- the attention you put on details ... miracle? Can be but, I'd call it talent. BRILLIANT.

Sweet meaty Jesus I've seen a cleaner diff come off of a car that sat on the bottom of a lake for 30 years. I'm not kidding. It's amazing how clean the gears and carriers and bearings were! Amazing work as always! It's wonderful to see old parts that other people would just throw away be saved. You're single handedly keeping the spare parts pool bigger for everyone in the e30 community, bravo!

Nice work!A small tip for a tool that can be useful in the future would be an air needle hammer, or "scaler". It is not expensive, and it really quickens up cleaning flaking, scaly rust in hard to reach places before glass bead blasting.
18:30 - It seems to me that the sealant is incorrectly laid, it must go on the inside of the bolts, and not on the outside, otherwise your oil will flow through the bolts.
@@SAK_- A lot of people get this wrong but you do not use a sealant to replace a gasket. Let the gasket do it's job that is why it is made. The sealant is only there to hold the gasket in place nothing more. A little to much but I am not sure about BMW rears. People might know to put more because it's a common problem with their type of rear.
I still watch this because it's still amazing. This is a great love story between a man and his car. I wish I could restore some of my favorite cars like this.
Other than the surface corrosion for a lsd that’s 30-40yrs old it wasn’t that bad inside. Fantastic job on the refurbishment it will now last another 40👍🏼😁
all I know is that my car doesn't have limited slip because I dug ruts in the yard playing around today and there was only one row, but it looks like the right axle is dominant, so all is good.

18:30 sealant must be on the inner side of the bolt holes (on the top you done right way, on the bottom change your mind :D can be leaking trough the bolts)
Another great job and interesting video - it takes talent to get them both right. Keep up the good work. 👍 Just a pointer on applying RTV as a gasket... make sure you put the sealant bead on the inboard side of the bolts, so that the oil won’t leak out through the bolt’s threads.
Another amazing restoration from you my friend, was really pumped to see another upload for the E30 Restoration. If this high standard of work that you've been carry out continues, I doubt that they'll be a cleaner and nicer example of an E30 out there.

Hi I have big problems with my car Mercedes-Benz E320 1999 I spent a lot of money and no body fix it Japan import When i drive my car in straight away from120 km and more the car goes right and left i loose control and i should return back the steering wheel opposite direction to keeping on straight and these problem happen when any car come beside my car at any side left or right Or if any winds in the weather Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee help me
Yeah they are. I estimate this assembly weights about 80 lbs. I swapped in a higher ratio and repaired this same part on my e30 several times. It brings me back to the good ole' days.
i know, it's like Germans make cars like scaled down tank's but everyone else make ramped up go-karts. i got a 2001 1.9tdi 220bhp passat getting a 330cd next month, e46 respectively lol.

My mechanic had an old 1960's Merc with 180k miles on it, he stripped it down and it still had the hone marks on the bores, you never regret buying quality
Please, please be carefull when breaking the car in. Take it easy at first and change and inspect the oil after 2-3K kilometres. You did such a good job!
That is so sexy. Nice work. Did this 15 years ago but you had much better results. My LSD carrier was destroyed and bought an entire Diff assembly replacement for $150 .
I can't believe how many pieces are involved for 20 year old differential. just so you can have little part of the car and much Moore engineering. Great job thanks for sharing
I have a 92 e34 525i and it had horrible rust on the brake calipers so I took a couple days with a wire brush to get it all off but it looked way better than new when I was done.
I have no clue what that contraption was. Probably a gear box or something. But I was captivated by the expertise and the craftsmanship. I found it relaxing to watch.
That is really amazing to be able to take your knowledge and skill and restore something like this. I am really impressed! Would love to do this kind of work in another life.

The paint on the finished project is beautiful, almost looks like liquid.. Favourite thing about these videos is the different methods used in the cleanup/paint removal phase
That looks pretty simplistic, and it looks easy to rebuild. This type of case would be easy to use on a custom built car with IRS, and it would be easy to build custom length drive shafts. The possibilities would be endless.
Most people would have splashed out on a brand new one, just goes to show how a little tlc can bring an engineering masterpiece back to its former glory. Well done mate.
Wykyd I tend to find if you have the tools and bits for doing a job like that you can keep it cheap but if your a first timer you have to get all the tools and bits for the job and then the price shoots up, personally apart from a few bearings and oil seals I could do that for next to nothing

@@ericmiller7713 aluminium can corrode. :) i work as a aircraft structural mechanic so i know... Aircrafts that fly overseas have the most corrosion, beacuse of salt.
@@steveguest8028 protection is there to make it last longer... We use Alodine 1200 for that matter. Even aircraft parts treated with Alodine or other anti corrosion agents come years later with corrosion on those spots.. Corrosion starts with microscopic gaps within the fibres of alloy, and then spread across the surface..

Wrong. I'm a certified UA-cam watcher and I can tell you, you've never been more wrong

no that sealant is for oil too. Used on the engine in a lot of places too

18:33 made a wee mistake with your sealant... should draw rings of sealant around your bolt holes, some of those have leak potential.
Of all the diff services I’ve ever done I’ve never drawn circles around the bolt holes. Never had a diff leak.
@@joshkey8930 I made a gasket for my e24 LSD no leaks yet and way easier to remove than sealant if i ever need to open it up again.

I think the cover is made from aluminium alloy. Usually AL is anodized not painted.
Curious about not painting the diff cover. Is this because paint acts like a heat insulator or another reason?
BangDroid I was thinking the same thing. He should of just painted the same color to keep the theme. He still did a good job as always.
I believe the cover is aluminum and might have even been unpainted from the factory

Nice! We just welded a 4.45 small case, to replace the 3.64 medium case LSD that was in our E30 track car
