    I've gotten pretty obsessed with youtube restoration videos over the past couple months. One thing that makes your content stand out from the rest is your editing. You do a great job of compressing the tedious, uninteresting stuff and maintain a really good rhythm throughout. Another great resto - keep em coming!

      Yeah but it is a fucking pain in the ass if you have never done it before, can not find any shop manuals on how to do it and do not own some of the tools needed. So just get a diff from a car that has been totaled and you're good to go within 2 hours.

    Sweet meaty Jesus I've seen a cleaner diff come off of a car that sat on the bottom of a lake for 30 years. I'm not kidding. It's amazing how clean the gears and carriers and bearings were!
    Amazing work as always! It's wonderful to see old parts that other people would just throw away be saved. You're single handedly keeping the spare parts pool bigger for everyone in the e30 community, bravo!

    Nice work!A small tip for a tool that can be useful in the future would be an air needle hammer, or "scaler". It is not expensive, and it really quickens up cleaning flaking, scaly rust in hard to reach places before glass bead blasting.

    18:30 - It seems to me that the sealant is incorrectly laid, it must go on the inside of the bolts, and not on the outside, otherwise your oil will flow through the bolts.

    • @thomasduffin6342
      @thomasduffin6342 6 років тому +5

      @@SAK_- A lot of people get this wrong but you do not use a sealant to replace a gasket. Let the gasket do it's job that is why it is made. The sealant is only there to hold the gasket in place nothing more. A little to much but I am not sure about BMW rears. People might know to put more because it's a common problem with their type of rear.

    Just a pointer on applying RTV as a gasket... make sure you put the sealant bead on the inboard side of the bolts, so that the oil won’t leak out through the bolt’s threads.

    Favourite thing about these videos is the different methods used in the cleanup/paint removal phase

    That looks pretty simplistic, and it looks easy to rebuild. This type of case would be easy to use on a custom built car with IRS, and it would be easy to build custom length drive shafts. The possibilities would be endless.

      It all depends on the price of a new part vs the cost to rebuild for me.

      Wykyd I tend to find if you have the tools and bits for doing a job like that you can keep it cheap but if your a first timer you have to get all the tools and bits for the job and then the price shoots up, personally apart from a few bearings and oil seals I could do that for next to nothing

      Aluminum doesn't rust, steel does. Cover is aluminum, body is steel. Seems to make sense.

    • @MiKa-fu2wi
      @MiKa-fu2wi 5 років тому +12

      Yes it does. Especially since the cover is the part sticking towards the back and is basically the only part that is visible. At least he didn't paint it red lmao.

      @@ericmiller7713 aluminium can corrode. :) i work as a aircraft structural mechanic so i know... Aircrafts that fly overseas have the most corrosion, beacuse of salt.

      @@steveguest8028 protection is there to make it last longer... We use Alodine 1200 for that matter. Even aircraft parts treated with Alodine or other anti corrosion agents come years later with corrosion on those spots.. Corrosion starts with microscopic gaps within the fibres of alloy, and then spread across the surface..
