  • Pros and Cons of Low Profile Tires. It’s highly likely that you’ve seen a car with low-profile tires and it looks sooo good. But good looks are not the only thing that these tires provide; they're also known as performance tires. However, in increasing performance and speed, low-profile tires can also cause less comfort and are susceptible to damage. Low-profile tires account for performance improvements in better handling and higher intensity of braking. You can also add improved fuel efficiency to that list. But on the downside, these tires can lead to a bumpier ride due to their shorter and reinforced sidewalls. You may also experience more frequent rim damage due to its proximity to the road

    Any car i've had i'll generally drop an inch in rim size and go 10mm wider and profile higher (think 235/35r19 to 245/40r18 like on a golf). You lose barely any "performance" but gain extra comfort on those bumpier roads. Most brake setups will allow for a drop in rim size and tbh i don't like the look of large rim/low profile as it looks too poser for me.

    225 60 16 has been the best riding tires I've owned!!! I threw 20 inch rims on my car with 245 40 20 tires and let me tell you lol..The only thing good about upping the rim size is that it looks good ....
    The ride was incredibly bumpy & I had to drive slow....All the time!!!, I felt every rock pebble u name it...I ended up having to get alignments every time I got oil changes which was 3k miles!!! And whats worst now mostly all cars come standard with low pros...

    Read afterwards in the internet, that these rims are prone to crack or bend.
    May these R Estoril rims be of an not good quality or is it with every rim? And would a 18“ crack or bend absolutely not or just less?
    Great video by the way. Thank you.

    Using a fitment guide I went from 16" wheels with regular tires to 18" wheels with Low-Profile High-Performance tires 20 years ago. AND I love THEM. They perform well in curves, get greater mpg maker's window sticker - have way less rolling resistance than regular tires, and greater stopping ability. The secret to effective response with LP HP tires is to pump them up to 80% of their psi capacity. My low-profile tires have always said on the side walls "50 psi max". I run them at 40 psi (80%) and the car handles extremely well. And used in conjunction with lowering struts which dropped the car 1 &1/2 inches) they make the car look very sharp, too. One last thing, they have no trouble dealing with potholes. They really are High Performance tires.

    My new Audi S3 came with 235/35R19 tyres on beautiful alloy wheels. They look great. Unfortunately, even in "comfort" mode, the car feels every surface irregularity. In under four months of ownership I have replaced two very expensive tyres to punctures on suburban main roads that had very small potholes after rain. Because the potholes were struck at low speeds, the rims seem to have escaped damage. The brake calliper position should allow for a reduction to R18 but I am waiting for Audi to respond about suitable replacement 18" wheel and tyre combinations. If I had known about the problems caused by such low profile tyres I would not have bought this otherwise excellent vehicle.

      Often something is sacrificed between looks, performance and comfort or functionality with a tyre package. I'm running run flat P325/30ZR19 and share all your concerns.
      As for converting to 18"s: these options won't affect any of your systems such as speed, ABS.... because the tyre package gives you a near 0 tolerance wheel diameter - just a thought starter.

      What profile would you recommend ?

    • @YourHomeGarage
      @YourHomeGarage  2 роки тому +1

      Great question: When you change the tyres and wheels, you always want to focus on the overall diameter. A lower profile tyre and larger rim package should be close to the same diameter as the original combination or rule of thumb is try to stay within 5% difference. Too large a variation could impact the gearing and correct operation of the car. Also, any drastic changes to the overall diameter will give you a false reading of speed and distance on your odometer. Other issues could be wear and tear on suspension and brake systems. Larger wheels and tires change the suspension angles and could affect your transmission’s gear ratio. Basically, keep in mind the vehicle was calibrated for a certain wheel diameter, so any changes could indeed affect multiple systems.

    • @YourHomeGarage
      @YourHomeGarage  2 роки тому +1

      I think your tyre is a 225/55R18, which likely has a 27.7" diameter. If you wanted to go with 22's, like you suggested then something like a 235/30R22 will give you a similar diameter (27.6"). Just keep in mind this would change the comfort of vehicle to a more stiff ride. Wheel packages are really a personal taste - but try to focus on the overall diameter like the example I just gave you to find something you like.

    • @YourHomeGarage
      @YourHomeGarage  2 роки тому

      Generally, you want to stay with a tire/rim combo that is within 3% (+ \ -) diameter size from the factory tires. Anything greater than a 3% tolerance can alter your car's computer and affect:
      Speedometer
      Odometer
      Anti-lock brake system
      Torque
      Traction control
      Gearing settings
      A change in tire diameter will also affect the handling.

    • @ZDude55
      @ZDude55 Рік тому

      @@YourHomeGarage So 3% of 17 is 0.5” and 18 is more than that. So you’re saying that you shouldn’t change from a 17 inch wheel and tire to an 18 inch wheel and tire combo because of the change in diameter will affect all these various systems.
      So then my question is, what if you kept 17 inch wheels, but just changed the width of the wheels from 17x8 to 17x9.5 or 17x8.5 and changed the tires from 215/50R17 to something wider, like 245/40R17 or 255/40R17?
      Also what if I wanted not just more width but also lower aspect ratio too, such as 245/35R17 or 255/35R17? Would any of those changes affect the speedometer etc?

      Thanks for watching and commenting. As for highway speeds you’ve already settled in on the stiffer ride, so that won’t be an issue for you. Of course the speedometer will not be accurate because of the larger tire diameter. And also be aware the tires and rims are more susceptible to damage because of the low profile 35’s. 22's are as big as you can go on a stock truck and they do provide a comfortable ride if everything is setup for that wheel size. For you, make sure your brakes and suspension is in great working condition. Oversized wheels can put strain on those systems. As for being "okay" - there are are few in car group that drive and tolerate the ride during long distances. For me personally - it would be too harsh of a ride for that timeframe, but don't let that sway you. It still comes down to personal preference and more importantly, if the car is properly set up for it. Here is a link that I use when looking at different tire setups tiresize.com/calculator/ What I like about this site is you can look at any combination. More specifically your question about placing low profile tires on the original 18's. Play close attention to the diameter +/-, this information is so valuable.

    For daily driving are low profiles good ? I was thinking of getting 35 aspect ratio

    • @YourHomeGarage
      @YourHomeGarage  2 роки тому +3

      That is a difficult question to answer because everyone’s daily drive is different. So here is something to think about.
      Some people buy low-profile tires because they like the looks of them. But from a driving point of view, the primary reason for doing so is improved handling at higher speeds. Because they are wider, low-profile tires provide better grip and responsiveness in cornering.
      Most of us do most of our driving either at controlled speeds, so low profiles will provide a stiffer ride in those environments. But if you like to head out on the twisty roads such as a mountain range, then let it rip, low-profile tires will certainly give you the cornering power. And if you simply like the looks of them, what do a few more bumps matter!!!

      I’m not sure what you mean by rumble. Though, if they are not operating as they should, then it’s not normal.
      Alignment or damaged suspension could cause wear such as cupping, scalloping or feathering in the tires. The tires would then produce a sound and or vibrate.

    How is it that all of us English speaking folks have settled on "wheels" being spelled as such... but no agreement on tire or tyre

    Bigger rims mean heavier car which means increased fuel consumption. They also look ridicules .

    Low profile tires don't look good, they look awful, they look like stagecoach wheels.
