I absolutely adore how Nadia uses it's horror elements, they're so infrequent and shocking that it's genuinely damn near scarring. Fait's death and Jean's screams, everything involving the original Atlantis aboard the wreckage of Yellow Noah, Electra's brother's arm falling off, the failed prototype humans aboard Red Noah (legit had a nightmare about THAT one), Beniusis/Basileus' mechanical body...
The artstyle used by him back then was already amazing.. monetary constraints only served to develop his fantastic art even further. I see a lot of other anime in this.. even a lot of The End of Evangelion.
Nadia is more complex in its themes than Eva imo. Anno had real life events interwoven with fiction (Jules Verne's 20000 lieues sous la mer). Gargoyle and Neo Atlantis are a stand in for Hitler and the Nazis obviously. The funny thing is Gargoyle himself was not an Atlantean, he had similar features to Electra with blond hair and olive skin. It goes even further with the Atlantis lore and how Atlanteans were basically aliens who came to Earth, and caused simians to evolve into humans so they can have cheap labor , which is a twisted view of Darwin's theory of evolution. Anno managed to create a very unique and interesting mythology, mixing elements from real life regimes like the Nazis, as well as Ancient Egypt, the result is nothing short of being unique. Compare that to Evangelion who gets lost in its mumbo jumbo about Adam, Lilith and the Evas, it just feels like a bad ripoff of the Bible at times. But where the show really shines is the characters. With time I really grew to like Electra, at first I thought she was just another chick in love with Nemo (who would blame her) but she is a very complex character who was thorn between her thirst for revenge and love for Nemo. I'm still team Gladys though.
