Hello everyone, I'm Sam, and in this video I take a look at Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water. I was drawn to this show as a fan of Hideaki Anno's other work, and after watching it I knew immediately that I wanted to make it the subject of a video.
I think Nadia exemplifies some of the best things about 90s era Gainax series. It's worth looking past the flaws, and it's not every day that you stumble on a show with a Hayao Miyazaki writing credit and a Hideaki Anno director credit.

I watched Disneys Atlantis when i was a kid. Needless to say i loved this show even more. The mentioned imperfections make it feel so real to me.
This anime is very underrated, the storyline is really great, I highly appreciate this 90s anime
I watched this anime when i was in gradeschool and it truly stamped an image in my mind. So during the quarantine i searched for its title and rewatched it. Every time i hear the chorus of the op, my childhood literally relives on me. It's an otherworldly sensation.
Childhood memories aside, i really like this anime but i got impatient with the island arc. If the island arc was compressed to like 3 episodes, it could have been one of my faves now.
I enjoyed both deep stories about humanity and nature while also all the innocent fun adventurous parts of the show. Sure, deserted island episodes got climsy after some time, but otherwise I like the whole series
That's pretty much where I fall at the end of the day. Nadia's a really fun show that has some interesting things to say. The execution is a little wonky in places, but that's just me being nitpicky. Thanks for watching!
I agree I also got a lot of Castle in the Sky vibes when I started watching and ultimately was what led me to love the series
yeah, the island episodes aren't really bad, they just _draaaag_
Of all the Nadia reviews out there, this is the most that I like.
Anno directed Nadia until episode 22, when he got depressed and warn off for all the stress. Then he was proposed to leave the show in hands of Shinji Higuchi and rest until the final episodes. Right after he left, Higuchi started to listen to the network's complains and the show became a lot wackier and full of slapsticks (the infamous Island arc and Africa arc). Then Anno returned in episode 35 and the tone suddenly shifted to full scif-fi drama until the end. Anno is still angry until this day, he refuses to accept the Island arc as part of Nadia and he only accept one episode of the Africa arc as canon because it's necessary to take the characters to the kingdom of Tartessos. Anno even edited a compilation in laserdisc (Nadia: The Nautilus Story) for erasing the episodes not directed by him. A fun trivia related to Eva: Anno was so angry with Shinji Higuchi and hurt for his episodes that he named Eva's MC after him as a reminder that he shouldn't run away, no matter how stressful the work is.
I agree the Anno directed episodes are far better, but Anno has some of the blame here for leaving fan service and turning Nadia into nothing but a passive damsel in distress that already by episode 22 had done nothing but be a stereotypical hormonal teenager - how Anno imagines women because he can't see them as anything more - that gets captured, complains and adds nothing to the Nautilus or even to Jean. Her forgetting Jean immediately after seeing an attractive African she liked is honestly in line with how Anno portrayed her in his own episodes.
How ironic that both of them came together to co-direct Shin Godzilla.
@@quqbalam5089 I still think that those African episodes were a mistake. They obviously were done very poorly and lazily, and ultimately contributed nothing to the actual plot of the story. Besides, the story flows much smoother when jumping from episode 31 to 35; absolutely nothing of value is gained from eps 32-34. Anno had every reason to delete them from his continuity of the show. Simply put, they are an unfortunate blemish.

I have not seen Nadia actually, and I thought I’d watch anyways cause I really liked the commentary from your Utena videos but now that I’ve seen some bits, it really reminds me a lot (art wise or something else I can’t point me finger on) of one of my favorite Ghibli’s, Castle in the Sky, and I don’t want a ruin something I might actually really be into with spoilers... so I’ll come back after I binge!

It was that Anno who partially inspired my retelling of Genesis. Check out some of my latest videos on the topic. But clearly Anno was eating from the books of Zecharia Sitchin. Which I do not fall for. lol
Great video essay. You tell it like it is, as no other does.
One thing a lot of people seem to miss (or notice but gloss over due to the discomfort in the subject matter), is the comparison of the Neo Atlanteans to the Ku Klux Klan. The pointed hoods are the most obvious, but the goals of both groups are similar- Neo Atlantis states that humans are inferior beings, meant to be slaves, and wish to restore this order. Adding to the horror, in the world of Nadia, it's actually a true part of the lore that humans were made to serve Atlanteans, so in a fucked up way, Gargoyle is technically correct. But it also examines the other side- people aren't their ancestors, they're themselves. Nadia, despite having Atlantean blood, is just as human as the rest of the humans in the show, stated by Jean in the last episode. Likewise, Gargoyle believed himself to be Atlantean, despite being human. The two species are identical.
The species are not identical otherwise humans wouldn't be rejected by Atlantis magitech. They were just made to look exactly like Atlanteans. Kind of like the Androids in Blade Runner. Which if you think about it actually gives the heroes a dark twist. Why did nobody tell Gargoyle that he was a human?
Great video essay! I've only skimmed Nadia before but I honestly didn't know Miyazaki had been involved in the creation, more so Hideaki Anno directing this. I'll give this another shot. Subscribed to you as well! Hoping to see more of these eloquently executed video essays.
One of my favourite shows. Great analysis too. I remember watching this in 9th grade, but only a few episodes. Decided to watch it fully a while ago and I think it succeeds in so many ways.

This video really provided some powerful insight and analysis of the show! It is unfortunate that the show has lived in the shadow of Evangelion, and no one really talks about it in depth. Your video was very well put together, I hope you will continue to upload videos like these again in the future.
So excited to see another video from you! Just from the introduction, I can see some great improvements in visual and audio quality, so bravo. I'll hold off watching this one for now, as I'm quite busy and also haven't seen Nadia, but am super happy you're continuing to make and improve on your videos.

This is one Anime that I actually prefer the dub on. Although the accents are inconsistent at times, the acting is great from both the kids and the Grandis gang. I tried watching this subbed, I really did, but I just couldn't enjoy it as much. All in all I thought ADV did a great job dubbing the show.
Such a great essay. It's a shame that you decided to step away from UA-cam. I would have liked to see more of your content, as you manage to narrate your train of thoughts and ideas in such a well structured and appealing way.
Nadia mainly suffered from quarrels between Gainax and NHK. If it weren't for that TV station, who would've know what would have become of that show and Evangelion respectively. To my knowledge, Nadia served as a spiritual predecessor to Eva and Anno intended to make Eva a sequel to Nadia. However, Gainax was not able to attain the rights to the show, which at that time belonged to NHK. Needless to say, the show is great and I gladly rewatch it every now and then.
Miyazaki got to tell his story in the show he actually made out of this script, Future Boy Conan. It is one of his most underrated works.
Switching gears, Nadia was a major influence on Steven Universe.

I first saw this on Retrocrush yesterday. I remember when I was a kid seeing art of Nadia and thinking she was really cute. For some reason I thought it be a more mature anime.
Correct, that's what i think, this is for 20 years old and above for adult viewers and plus I remember when I was a kid in 2001 on the library computer seeing disney Atlantis comparing to Nadia the secret of blue water, 23 years later watch the anime and really stole my heart.

@@veganphilosopher1975 I saw the comments about skip the island arc, I completely ignored them, I saw it the arc and I didn't got bored, the audience didn't get it the arc and they're just too immature, I really like it to be honest.
Finaly finished the show today. Started and stopped around episode 10 a decade ago.
I have to say, I think the series would be more digestable if we took episodes 23-29, re-edited them into 2 or 3 episodes just to keep the necessary infos for the relevance of the plot continuity and totally got rid of episodes 32-33-34.

Does anyone have a suggested 'essential episodes' list? I truly mean essential. I like the idea of this show, but it really looks like it should have been about six or 12 episodes. I can always go back and watch other skipped episodes afterwards, and that's often a more rewarding experience than being lost in a train of inconsequential padding without knowing when something meaningful is going to happen.
They need to make a movie to forget that hideous motion picture.....
the movie was fine, it doesn't really affect the quality of the overall show. Could've been better, though.

The "romance" section of the show (the island arc) was almost all filler. I don't think it should be considered as a significant part of the series. Putting that aside, I do agree that the series itself is rather disjointed when trying to express its themes, especially with Nadia's character development in the last few episodes of the series (episode 35, especially). It may be because I skipped most of the island arc, but her transition into a descendant of the Atlanteans and her deep despair that came with it, threw me off a lot. I couldn't completely grasp what Nadia was going through, and it felt like it was squeezed in the show too quickly for it to be engaging, at least for me personally.
Shame that this channel did not continue.
The disjointed nature of the show could probably be attributed to anno's loss of control over the work ( similar to that of Kare Kano) I could be mistaken but I believe that the latter episodes suffered from a lot of studio interference. Also did you know that Misato Katsurage from Evangelion was actually modelled on Nadia? ( the hair) with the personality of her Japanese voice actress who anno was supposedly in love with. Just a bit of trivia lol, be sure to check out Kare kano and gunbuster if you haven't already :)
I believe you are right Milo. The studio wanted to expand the series due to good ratings.
Let's also not forget Usagi from Sailor Moon, her hair bangs and shares the same VA.
Conceptually an anime directed by Hideaki Anno and written by Hayo Miyazaki sounds like literally the best thing ever though I can see what you are getting at with the two messages interfering with each other, would you recommend an abridged viewing list which leaves out some of the worse episodes or do you think it only works as a whole?
It's also worth considering that Nadia still made NHK's top 100 anime of all time list, so clearly, at least in Japan, people still remember it, it's just neon genesis evangelion is so much more popular.
Also how do you feel about the movie?
If I had to cut out any episodes, I'd probably shorten the "deserted island" arc - episode 23 through episode 31 or so. These episodes aren't bad, there's just lots of repetition and little forward momentum. In general though I'm not a fan of abridged episode lists. The only time I use them is skipping actual filler in a very long series.
I'm glad to see that Nadia still makes the NHK's top 100 list! It's a really good "introductory" show and I think it could have been a smash hit in the west, too. Unfortunately, I don't recall it ever making it onto TV outside of Japan. The 90s was forever ago though so my memory might be spotty.
I haven't seen the movie yet, so I don't have any real opinions on it!
Supposedly there is a remake/abridged version with some new lines done by Hideaki Ano before he cut his ties with NHK called Nadia: The Nautilus Story. However it was only released on laser disc in japan and no one has put a RAW or subbed version up yet. However there is someones remake of it on UA-cam using the dub. It notably cuts down the 8 episodes islands arc to about two and a half episodes. I would prefer to watch a subbed version but alas, none exist on the internet and I don't own a laser disc player to dump it.
Nadia: Secret of Blue Water will never be forgotten, even a few years after the success of Neon Genesis Evangelion there was at least one animation company remembered the series and they would go onto making their own Hentai parody called Mania: Secret of Green Tentacle.
Oh and the mushroom scene in the Nadia episode when the 3 of the characters were living to survive on the deserted island, that mushroom moment is parodied in the Hentai version.
Is the movie worth going through the trouble of finding it?
Was no one weirded out by the Samson and Marie thing like she's an adult so she can be with anyone but if I took care of someone when they were little it just seems odd to want to be to with them romantically
Eh, they were just friends. Samson was only playing with her. They don't end together or anything like that.

The first time i saw it i admit i was, but after rewatching the anime after many years, i am not anymore: actually i ship them very much; sure, the age gap is very huge and in our modern eyes disturbing, but let me explain why I stan them:
-both of them have lost their parents brutally and when they were still very young(Sanson's ones because of war or desease; Marie's ones because killed by the Neo-Atlanteans). That's a very unique common ground for understanding each other.
-By her side, i saw a side of Sanson i never suspected there was: his willingness to play with her even in the most childish way (he, a dandy and playboy xD!); not to mention his _real_ protectiveness: see how worried and desperate he was when Marie got sick in ep 14, or when he entrusted her safety to Ayerton, a man he despised, before going to fight the final battle.
-to me, they form a very well built contrast to the one relationship in this series i have found truly disturbing, gross and unhealthy: Captain Nemo and Elektra (alone, they were two great characters; but as a pair, forgive me, they were a disaster). These two pairings have many things in common, such as both the men have saved both of the girls who were very young, but unlike Nemo, Sanson wasn't responsible of the murdering of Marie's family and he never explicitly told Marie that he considered her as his own daughter; and both Electra and Marie had developed an interest on each man, but, unlike Elektra who had no one else to go to and therefore she clinged to Nemo with her understandable but disturbing feelings of love/hate, Marie didn't, as she had people who has seen as her "adoptive parents/siblings" (jean and nadia) therefore having the chance to grow up healthily although the traumatic exsperiences she had lived and she was living. And at the end: Nemo died leaving Elektra to raise their child alone; once she grew up, Sanson fell in love with Marie, they got married and started a real family together. So for me, Sanson and Marie were more healthy and genuine and they deserved their happy ending.

I am a sucker for shows like this - 90s classics that, despite their flaws, are masterpieces in my eyes. I just finished Nadia today after a lifetime of wondering how it was. I fell in love with it quickly.
Does anybody have any other recommendations for shows that would satisfy me as much as this one did? I'd like as many as I can get - preferably with a dub even if it's cheesy.

Or skip the island chapter which you can for the most part and it goes from a fun adventure to a charcuterie and life study to a look on religion and technology and how it effects us do we control technology or does technonl6 control us...there a pretty clear example of this in the ending of the show...I won’t spoil...just skip the island part and it’s a really good show. I disagree on Eva as I think it’s a overblown mess that got its head up its ass so far that it got stuck.
Nadia in theory has a much better story than NGE. Too bad both NHK and Anno butched it up so badly with filler, fan service and a passive main character that does nothing in the end.

This anime had so much potential, which got utterly wasted. See kids? This is why you don't give Miyazaki projects to people who don't know a thing.
This show has more elements from Theosophy than Jules Verne, though. Other than the Nautilus and Atlantis, there's really not much from Verne. The plot is more in line with the writings of Helena Blavatsky's invented history of Atlantis.
Anno doesn't know shit about meaning. This is the guy who when confronted with cyberbullies who threatened to kill him contemplated suicide and the only reason he didn't kill himself was the physical pain of death, not greater meaning, not the his family and friends. The reason he gets pressured in the first place is because he's too entrenched in the community and what society thinks of him. Also none of the points you mentioned cover what actually makes an action adventure of this type great, which Nadia is lacking.
