Saw your comment on a RC post and decided to check you out. I've wanted to get into ham for a while but have no idea where to start. Even watching the Ham Radio Crash Course videos it seems overwhelming.
I really just want to be able to set up a pair of radios and maybe use a repeater so if things go sideways i can contact my family from work across town.
But without a license i have no legal way of trying it out right?
The best place for you to start would be to check out GMRS and amateur radio. The technician license test is incredibly easy. An app I recommend to study how to pass the test is called Ham Radio Exam. Its made by Roy Watson and easy to find. GMRS gets you on the air with no test and the license covers you and your immediate family for 10 years and I believe the price recently changed from $75 to $35. You can find information on how to apply for the licenses all over but I recommend checking out the "how to" video that explains the fcc website from Notarubicon. Do you have any radios yet? If you don't, then figure out what you want to actually do with radio and then you can figure out which license to go for. Ham radio is fun though so hopefully you dive into all services of radio. I will be remaking my uv5r manual programming video in about 2 weeks so keep an eye out for that. If you ever have any questions please feel free to ask and I will try to give the simplest answer I can.

It seems like a good but limited radio. Seen reviews of only 40w output instead of 50w, no comp connections, no aprs. Have you checked out the yaesu ftm-300dr? Thats a great radio!
