- Just a few days ago, Argentinian player Diego Schwartzman announced that his professional career is coming to an end next season. While it seems like an early announcement, it is something that could be anticipated considering his performances over the last year and his public declarations as well. Diego himself had already given hints about it, but now it is official. He is most likely retiring after the Argentina Open to be played in Buenos Aires next february. What a career he’s had though. Certainly a lot more than he could have ever expected, and definitely, a lot more than most people expected from him.

As a short guy myself I always rooted for Diego. He had a great career and wish him the best.
Commentators loved him. They understood better than others how hard he had to work to be there competing with giants and beating them.
I think everybody likes his face too
To beat Nadal and handle his wicked forehand spin on clay at 5'7 is such an amazing achievement. Diego is a great inspiration!
He’s not 5‘7
He's 5'6 in fact
I believe 5‘4. I just read some stories on celebheights. Very believable
He's closer to 5'5 than 5'7...
Everytime when he played against a player around 5'9, he looked a good 4 inches shorter.
I am a short Asian, and I play tennis a little bit, so I know exactly how hard someone has to work to overcome the height disadvantages in this sport. Great role model and inspiration, no doubt.
Same size as you, but much older. Back in the 70s we had short guys like Solomon, Dibbs, Mike Estep, Billy Martin, and Ken Rosewall. Wood rackets blunted the big guys power as well as slippery grass n slow red clay. The Michael Changs and Schwartzmans are largely extinct.
I’m almost exact;y the same height as Diego, maybe slightly taller. Holding and swinging a racquet always came natural to me but I was told to quit tennis at fifteen and did, knowing that my height would be an issue. I always cheered for Diego, he showed the whole world that it ain’t the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog that matters. Would have to be one of the hardest working athletes on the planet to achieve what he did, an incredible career!
I don't know where you're from but I think short players can still be competitve on clay at a height level. If you live in a country where hard courts rule, you may have it harder
He looks more like 5f5 tbh which makes it even more amazing to what he has done.
This is what I was going to say. This guy is not 5'7" sorry. He needs to stop lying to himself. Walking on your toes and bouncing up does not cut it. He looks shorter than say, a few of the women listed as 5'7" . They even lie about the women. Ons Jabeur for example and Sakkari are listed as 5'6 and 5'8. I beg to differ. Emma R. is listed as 5'7' I tend to agree that she is close to that, the others I think are shorter. Inclduing Jessica Pegula. She seems about 5'4 or 5'5 not 5'7 as I've seen in some media.
@@nt4081 I think nishioka is actually 5f7. When Diego stands next to him Diego looks shorter. Emma might actually be taller. She looks between 5f7 to 5f9 but with women it's harder to tell as women tend to look taller.
I always liked Diego's forehand. It just looks so good
How dare you
As someone as 5’6 Diego makes me feel happy abt myself and well being
He's going to go down as the best short player in modern history. I love watching highlights of him. Very entertaining.
Johan Kreik was better, so was Michael Chang.
David ferrer
I met him at the luggage inspection in Montreal a few years back. Super nice.
I always rooted for him because of his big heart (plus, I don't think tall people should be allowed in any sports... ONLY KIDDING!) I'm Diego's height, so I have a soft spot for him.
How tall are you
Sebastian Baez will carry his torch now
Nah hes trash
8 in the world among giants is trash? You should be so trashy, Trump boy.
@@VayeNNNgamingwhy is Baez trash? He’s top 20/30 in the world? What have you accomplished in tennis, or are you just way trashier than Baez?
@@VayeNNNgaming lmao Baez already has 6 titles
@@Darkar251Kind of an interesting coincidence that Baez’s biggest title is also the ATP 500 Rio Open, same as Schwartzman.
It is always fun watching short guys like him and Ferrer play at such a high level. Those two are some of the hardest workers I’ve seen play.
Amazing athlete! Love him❤️🌱
Best wishes to Diego.
5'4" no 5'7". He is around 1.60cm no 1.7cm
A great competitor and excellent strategist
Never forget when they asked Roger the toughest serve on tour to return and he said, “Schwartzman” with a completely straight face something people who know Roger know is tough for him to do lol.
Seriously ? Do you have a source ? Because the only way I can see it as a possibility is because his serve's bounces are always low due to his height ? Especially compared to, say, Karlovic when all his rebounds are high.
@@TOXRaizou dude it was a joke. They did a rapid fire with Roger and one of the questions they asked him was “toughest serve on tour to return”. He had a deadpan straight face and said Schwartzman and didn’t break character. Hence the “joke” part of the whole thing. What made it so funny is that he didn’t chuckle after saying it.
Diego is one of my favorite players. He is nice and talented and funny and hard working and super cute.
I remember diego dreaming to reach top 100, he reached n8, epic!
This guy is an unbelievable player. He has beaten some great opponents like Thiem and Dimitrov. Also Nadal, I believe.
Diego is the cutest guy on tour. I fucking love him
Im 5'7 but in my mind i prefer to think im 6'2
yeah this thumbnail was insane
Sorry but it's weird that people seems to purposely claim he is 1.7m when he is actually more like 1.6m tall. He tries to dissimulate it, but many people who measure same height as him, revealed the truth after taking selfies with him. He should be proud of what he managed to accomplish with his short height, being disadvantaged in a sport where most players are all very tall nowadays.
Yeah, tbh I don't know what's the point of bluffing it... ATP does not have a drafting system like professional team sports😂
@@Leo-nc3yx This conversion is happening over and over every year about the lie on his height. People have proofs posing next to him for pictures, claiming their true height. Why would they lie about their own height?! Baez walked next to me last week and he is way shorter than me and he claims 170. That's BS! Same goes with Corentin Moutet. Check on google. Some sources write 180 when others 175. IMO he looks even shorter than that. So yeah, there you go! Infos are not accurate. You do what you want with this now
An amazing tennis player... he has everything that Dustin Brown hasn't :)
5:19 His best year was incoming: unlike others who struggled a lot during the pandemic, both TENNISTICALLY & personally. I Love it: Tennistically. Or possibly Tennisticly. Why not invent a word?
He is not 5’7. He’s 5’4, maybe 5’5 in the morning
Hey man I’m 5’7 and trust me, nothing will make look you look shorter than a tennis racquet, and a 6 foot plus monster at the other end of the court!
Don't take it bad. I am a Diego fan. Neverdiless, I keep on thinking that a friend of him that is a very strong player was not in the mood to defeat Diego in a just unique but very important match for Diego's carreer. But ok, he deserves it, Diego deserve the frienship of his friend and his friend didn't find the energy that day to defeat Diego. Ok. Is just a thinking. Perhaps it didn't ocurr.
Schwartzman for many years with great effort and courage made that the hight were not a reason for not achieving great results but on the 30's seems that finally the difference of height make a difference. He gave us all a lot. Hope he enjoy his last year. Why not a carrerer in doubles next?
No way that he is 5'7". More like 5'5"
Exactly. He is only around 166cm to 168. 5'7" isn't even that crazy short. Baez is 5'7 and doing just well.
@@Stu49583 Actually somewhere between 160-163
@@acelive7 If you google pictures of "Schwartzman and Baez" where he is standing next to Baez, 167 seems more likely. Or Baez is less than 170. I see only around 1 inch difference between them.
He looks shorter coz he's BUILT like a dwarf from Erebor
@@Stu49583 They likleyt have shoes on. The true height is attained barefoot . People have insoles and sneakers have anywhere from 1-2 inches.
He has a huge advantage: he belongs to Gaaad's Chosen People.
SUPER ANNA
Reminds me of Michael Chang.
He is short, but grunts like a tank.
Can you be a top tennis player being short? Actually yes, but you must start by accepting that you will not measure 1.90mt and adapting your game accordingly. Is Diego the exception confirming the rule? It depends, if the circuit moves towards hard courts, it is likely, but while clay tournaments resist there will be chances for not so tall players. Another reason to love clay courts.
Am I the only one who called him SHORTman .... (sorry...i know bad joke)
he was barely 5 foot 5... dont lie about it... he was still a great player
I know there is always a trend to add an inch or two, or two to three centimetres on short athletes. But I don't think he is 5 ft 7. I would say 5 ft 6.
I love the guy
But only in the atp level is height an advantage in tennis
Strange how his win rate is so low despite being a top player for a while
Never had a killer serve that gives him a free point. His game has always relied on his mental strength.
in 2019-2021 he had 62% win rate which is higher than Karen Khachanov's 58% win rate
5,3 o 5,4” máximo… 5,9” mide Gaudio y hay bastante diferencia entre ambos, más mérito para Diego! Gran jugador, ganarle a Nadal, no es algo que se tome a la ligera.
Being 5’8 saying fml lol
Women don’t like short men
Similar fate with messi height
5’7”? Great player, not 5’7”. Love Diego
?
Seems like a fairly new player to me. Shame he’s retiring so prematurely
the fark. You born yesterday?
@@NN0888 i wish ! 😂😂
More like 5'4
diego short-man ^_^ im only 5' 9" and know the difficulty of playing tennis in highschool against tall mofos
Is this trainwreck written by chatgpt lol
If you used your natural voice these videos would be more watchable. Can't listen to bot voice
He should play pickleball
Schwartzman is basically what if Nadal was a bit shorter and had less consistent forehand.
I don’t think that his height was a big problem
Couldn't get free points on serve, meant he'd have to play more rallies, usually more fatigued coming to the later matches.
He hit probably 80% of his forehands above shoulder height, that sure seems like a disadvantage to me. I get that he used a fully western grip to make high forehands easier but the fact is you cannot generate the same power when hitting the ball above shoulder height.
you clearly haven't played competitive tennis then. Height is extremely important in tennis, and not only because of the serve.
Actually, you’re right. His height is not a big problem. In fact it’s a very short one.
It was always a tall order for him.
no power at all
Why is he retiring at 30!?
Embarrassing.
For whom? He’s a multimillionaire with his life ahead of him. What’s there to be embarrassed about?
great player, but long overdue! Tennis like most sports is about leverage, size matters.
