Think again Sherinian's Metropolis Pt. 2 was the only reason Rudess had it. Rudesses Pt. 2 without Sherinian's influence could have been a complete flop. So DT dropped him and brought in the new guy to give their career a "second chanoce". To me the best themes: Overture 1928, Strange De Ja Vu, One Last Time were written by Sherinian.. Couldn't imagine the album without those classics.
Call me crazy but i think that when derek was in DT, the most awesome stuff of the band came out. Personally Falling into infinity is my favourite album!! That album shows more prog and even a little jazz than heavy, which i like most! Really call me crazy haha :D
Appeasing the record company. You can tell he's really awkward here when being asked questions about the albums writing process, and that's because he was so frustrated over the labels control over their band and he wanted out. Obviously he and the band couldn't give 2 shits over how old they are when it came to writing xD They were still a pretty young band at that point too.
I have a vague memory of seeing this back in 1997, four years before I got into DT. Nice to see Micaela Metso with blonde hair! RYGUYROCKER: Kevin left in 1994. Jordan did one gig with DT that year. Derek was in the band between 1995-1998. In late 1998 Jordan became a full member of DT. Check Wikipedia and the official DT bio for more details. REDIFORKING: They (MP & JP) kicked Derek out because they liked Jordan's playing more than Derek's (based on the Liquid Tension Experiment albums).
@Kalmansoutu also they felt that Derek's personality clashed with thier own... (they were all married and focusing on family... while derek was single and living the "rock star life".... ) kinda ironic... Mike was into coke near the end of that tour (touring into infinity)
And was a binge drinker until the end of Live Scenes from New York in 2000, where he was so stoned out, they had to carry him on a stretcher to the hospital after the concert.
Kevin Moore did more for Prog and Rock in three albums with DT than Rudess has done in 7 albums. Kevin is a hard ass but look at the quality he brought to the table. He took Dream Theater where Petrucci alone could not. They were the Lennon/McCartney of Prog. Rudess is a better pianist than probably a man that ever touched one, but he will never touch the serenity of Moore on the keys. He was like Mozart in Dream Theater. He is also a much kinder man these days.
@charlesandhisworld I'm actually glad he's not in DT anymore, Jordan is the most talented keyboard player/Pianist I've ever seen. The difference is clearly noticeable in their albums. I still respect Derek, his albums of Planet-X are awesome.
All the DT Keys guys each had their own style and are awesome musicians/ songwriters. But Jordan Rudess to me is the last piece of the puzzle and a perfect fit just in terms of how he meshes with the other 4. Just a great marriage of keys and guitars and everything else. Scenes From a Memory was the beginning of that and what a great beginning it was! It's their 2112. From what I heard this next album could be DT's Moving Pictures in terms of it being their next "arrival" album.
Yeah, if you got my last comment, my bad, didn't realise what time period this was. acos was called metropolis II in its early days, its areally sweet version of acos, ill help u find it if u cant
I think he didn't. Kind of unfair, really. The two other dudes asked really stupid questions and the first one looks like he doesn't even care what Portnoy says. By the way I remember seeing this on TV but that time I probably had no idea how great band I was watching..
Interesting how Portnoy said because they were older (he was only 30) they had to go a little "straighter", yet the albums after FIF were much more complex. Did he really believe that shit or was he trying to appease the record company?
I don't like Rudess as a musician. I know that he's a really cool and funny guy and also a freakin' amazing keyboard player, but he only contributed shit to Dream Theaters music. Long live Kevin Moore: the best prog keyborder of all time!
Derek has a kinda nerdy voice. No wonder they kicked him out. Neil Peart chose wisely; Mike is the only drummer I would trust to fill in for Neil, aka the greatest drummer ever, because Mike is the second greatest drummer ever

Crazy
Damn, I wouldn't wanna be the third guy who couldn't ask Mike a question. =(
That's a bit sad. =D

I imagine The face Of The guy That ask about Metropolis pt 2 when he view That it was going to be a complete album :v
Derek looks like he's in a boy band.
I laughed at Portnoy smiling a little when she said "the hollow song"

Derek looks like Bono Vox!
Erotomania is the best song of dream theater :)
@Kalmansoutu

This is Derek in the interview not kevin
Metropolis Pt.2 was originally made to be a 20 minute long song...

Lol I thought that the three guys in front of Mike and Derek were kids from Hanson
Yeah, if you got my last comment, my bad, didn't realise what time period this was. acos was called metropolis II in its early days, its areally sweet version of acos, ill help u find it if u cant
he didn't leave he was sort of kicked out. they wanted rudess all along from the start but he wasn't able to join right away. rudess is better anyway
I wonder if the last dude got his question...
Look it up on youtube, someone posted it in three parts :P
rudess brought creativity and talent that no one else had
mike's pretty cool in here
hmmm Metropolis pt two as one song.........I wonder what it sounded like.
Something like this! ua-cam.com/video/1HXuG-AxqCU/v-deo.html
But you probably already heard it by now :)
Yeah I found it. I thought was kind of boring they kept going back to riff from overture 1928.
@edthehead83 Well, I like at 0:25 it just says "Mike". Not "Michael Portnoy" or not even "Michael Portnoy -- Drums borned in 1967" ..
I totally agree with you.
Hah. If only they knew what they were going to do with Metropolis.
@edthehead83 It's a bit like "John, Paul, George and Ringo" you know
the guy on the end didnt get to ask
lawl Derek talking about Metropolis part 2. Pwnd.
Now neither of them are in the band =(
I think he didn't. Kind of unfair, really. The two other dudes asked really stupid questions and the first one looks like he doesn't even care what Portnoy says.
By the way I remember seeing this on TV but that time I probably had no idea how great band I was watching..
@edthehead83 well it does the same for mike as well
Interesting how Portnoy said because they were older (he was only 30) they had to go a little "straighter", yet the albums after FIF were much more complex. Did he really believe that shit or was he trying to appease the record company?
@SandalMonkey the only time ever
hahaha
look mike's face
in the score dvd you know why he look kinda frustrated
Why did Sherenian leave?
Or was he kicked out?
Derek was fired he didnt leave the band!
MP leave the band
so the 3rd guy didn't get to ask a question?
the hell is going on in here, there are no dream theater members in this video lol
I Knew It,,,Mike Portnoy Fired Derek S.....Because DS. keeps on Stepping on mike Portnoys Lime Light!!!! (Kiddin)
Derek Sherinian shouldn't have left.
@Hayacafrita
and why?
@edthehead83 same with Mike lol
AMEN
@GuillermoSmyser it wasnt that great. it seemed like left overs, and it was. Thank god they made it into an entire album.
@charlesandhisworld Besides, it wasn't up to him.
Wow, did Neil Peart really say that beautiful thing?? :P
3:38 o.0
@heyedmond i see what you did there
at 3:50, mike:
'your out of the band.'
I don't like Rudess as a musician.
I know that he's a really cool and funny guy and also a freakin' amazing keyboard player, but he only contributed shit to Dream Theaters music.
Long live Kevin Moore: the best prog keyborder of all time!
sherinian's such a fabio lol
Derek has a kinda nerdy voice. No wonder they kicked him out. Neil Peart chose wisely; Mike is the only drummer I would trust to fill in for Neil, aka the greatest drummer ever, because Mike is the second greatest drummer ever
This is just plain awkward.
