I used to hear this song as a kid and roll my eyes because it was so melodramatic. But now that I've experienced heartbreak, I literally get it with every fiber of my being.

i feel this song SO MUCH. my wife and i have been married 27 years, raised 3 beautiful daughters... but now we're different people, obviously we're not the same 20-somethings we were back then. and now that we've grown, and evolved, and our careers have taken us down different paths, it just seems like we both want something different out of the lives we have left. it's not that we don't love each other - we DO. but like the song so eloquently states, "sometimes love just ain't enough." these lyrics hit hard. i don't know what tomorrow brings, but i do know this song wraps its arms around me and comforts me in a way that only it can. starting out as kids and raising a family together, and then growing apart... it happens. it doesn't always have to end bad. but sometimes, it just has to end. i don't know if this all makes sense, or if i'm just rambling - probly a bit of both. just wanted to come here and share with others that love this track. peace and love to all.

Despite the sad words, this song was one of the most favorite songs of my late husband and me. We loved each other too much, and I thanked God for having him in my life. We used to dance with this one beautiful tune. May you Rest In Peace, my love. I loved you too much, but God loves you more. Patty is one of the loveliest, strongest voices in Rock. At one point Van Halen considered her as a vocalist to replace David Lee Roth (yes). She bowed out of a huge career when she started to have children. That was more important to her. This duet with Henley is perfect. Leave it to Don to give her voice the space it needs. No better female singer in rock.
While I can't agree there's no one better, I've seen Pat Benatar and Stevie Nicks live, she is in the pantheon of great singers regardless of gender. She went through the most amazing transformation. From "Goodbye To You" to "Hands Tied." I barely recognized her. She looked GORGEOUS in that vid mayhaps the prettiest of any woman. Especially in that backless dress WOW!!! That song had one of the greatest lines in it "each time you squeeze her hand you crush my heart."
Actually Patty backed Henley on a couple of songs before he decided he wanted the cover of this song to be a duet with Ms. Smyth. She's also been nominated for a Grammy and an Oscar for a song of hers that was put on a movie soundtrack. Oh, she's married to John McEnroe.
I guess we get what we get with Patty. It's always been a slight sadness to me that she has not done more music, still, as you say, she really has done quite a bit of work. It reminds me a bit of Laura Nyro, who may have been in your time but possibly before. Everybody knew her songwriting and talent during the 60's and 70's, she was genuis who passed away at age 50. She did not get "mass stardom" but instead has a catalog beyond most people's belief and still millions of fans.

It shows she has about a half dozen albums. So were the groups I mentioned covering her songs or singing songs written for them?
Laura Nyro was a ''writer's writer" who came out of NYC in the early 60's. People covered her originals. Those songs by Three Dog NIght (Eli's Coming) Fifth Dimension and many other acts you have heard. She was same age/era as Carole King. Blood Sweat &Tears (And When I Die) is one of hers. Her catalog is pretty large even though people now may not know who she was. In the music community anyone before the 80s would probably hold her in reverence, she was that good. Lots of piano, R&B and Folk influence. Hard to exactly describe, one of the most well loved.

There is another danger of loving someone too much. The only girl I ever kissed or dated became my wife. To say she was my life would be weak words.. After 30 years she passed away from pancreatic cancer at the age of 49 in 2009. I've never even thought of being with another. No dates, nothing. Whenever I think of kissing someone.....it's her. I imagine it will be this way till I join her. I'm now 67 so maybe not so long now.

The worst thing is that she slept with her son-in law(the father of her grand kids). I don't know how things could change so much. When we got married we said that we would love, honor and cherish in sickness and health. I guess that it meant more to me than it did to her.

I fully understand. I went through the biggest hurt of my life in 2019. I fell to the lowest deepest abyss. I truly thought that dying would be the only way out of that maddening pain. I thank God for pulling me through. I'm all the better for it. I am now married to a decent guy and his kids are so nice too. I'm at peace at last.

As a teen - I listened to this song on repeat. Crying my eyes out. Needing a hug so much from someone/anyone who could love me with honesty and trust. As an adult woman - I still go to this song for the same reasons. Loving and losing love is the most gut wrenching grief to experience. No grave happens yet. But the loss forever has occurred anyways. Love/lust are never enough. Losing self occurs because we loved/lust too much. When age happens and lust decreases by hormones - fellas - please be honest. Talk with her. Be open. Get creative. Use your imagination with hers ❤ Don't get fearful that she won't love you!!! Get excited and happy that you can share the best of your youthfulness together and also your beautiful aging processes together!!! Many shut down or walk away when one or both change or life changes them medically. Don't do that! They may talk at each other and never say anything of value. Or they simply quit talking at all. Love should be enough. But it isn't. In marriage - one can still be lonely. In dating - one can still be lonely. In friendship - one can be lonely. In lust - one will know soon enough - if - love was real. By if - they talk and stay or if - they silently exit away. I am so happy that sad songs exist!!! The only real hugs to exist. Real to my hug my heart. Real to remind my brain of reality. And sweet memories that I wish didn't hurt so bad of happiest times - but - wouldn't change the pain of it all --- if it meant - taking it all away... I wouldn't.

i feel this song SO MUCH. my wife and i have been married 27 years, raised 3 beautiful daughters... but now we're different people, obviously we're not the same 20-somethings we were back then. and now that we've grown, and evolved, and our careers have taken us down different paths, it just seems like we both want something different out of the lives we have left. it's not that we don't love each other - we DO. but like the song so eloquently states, "sometimes love just ain't enough." these lyrics hit hard. i don't know what tomorrow brings, but i do know this song wraps its arms around me and comforts me in a way that only it can. starting out as kids and raising a family together, and then growing apart... it happens. it doesn't always have to end bad. but sometimes, it just has to end. i don't know if this all makes sense, or if i'm just rambling - probly a bit of both. just wanted to come here and share with others that love this track. peace and love to all.

Patty is one of the loveliest, strongest voices in Rock. At one point Van Halen considered her as a vocalist to replace David Lee Roth (yes). She bowed out of a huge career when she started to have children. That was more important to her. This duet with Henley is perfect. Leave it to Don to give her voice the space it needs. No better female singer in rock.
While I can't agree there's no one better, I've seen Pat Benatar and Stevie Nicks live, she is in the pantheon of great singers regardless of gender. She went through the most amazing transformation. From "Goodbye To You" to "Hands Tied." I barely recognized her. She looked GORGEOUS in that vid mayhaps the prettiest of any woman. Especially in that backless dress WOW!!! That song had one of the greatest lines in it "each time you squeeze her hand you crush my heart."
Actually Patty backed Henley on a couple of songs before he decided he wanted the cover of this song to be a duet with Ms. Smyth. She's also been nominated for a Grammy and an Oscar for a song of hers that was put on a movie soundtrack. Oh, she's married to John McEnroe.
I guess we get what we get with Patty. It's always been a slight sadness to me that she has not done more music, still, as you say, she really has done quite a bit of work. It reminds me a bit of Laura Nyro, who may have been in your time but possibly before. Everybody knew her songwriting and talent during the 60's and 70's, she was genuis who passed away at age 50. She did not get "mass stardom" but instead has a catalog beyond most people's belief and still millions of fans.

It shows she has about a half dozen albums. So were the groups I mentioned covering her songs or singing songs written for them?
Laura Nyro was a ''writer's writer" who came out of NYC in the early 60's. People covered her originals. Those songs by Three Dog NIght (Eli's Coming) Fifth Dimension and many other acts you have heard. She was same age/era as Carole King. Blood Sweat &Tears (And When I Die) is one of hers. Her catalog is pretty large even though people now may not know who she was. In the music community anyone before the 80s would probably hold her in reverence, she was that good. Lots of piano, R&B and Folk influence. Hard to exactly describe, one of the most well loved.

I imagine it will be this way till I join her. I'm now 67 so maybe not so long now.

The worst thing is that she slept with her son-in law(the father of her grand kids). I don't know how things could change so much. When we got married we said that we would love, honor and cherish in sickness and health. I guess that it meant more to me than it did to her.

Once got really badly broken without any warning signs and since then I have "loved"... settling always to second bests so I can not get hurt like that anymore. I fully understand. I went through the biggest hurt of my life in 2019. I fell to the lowest deepest abyss. I truly thought that dying would be the only way out of that maddening pain. I thank God for pulling me through. I'm all the better for it. I am now married to a decent guy and his kids are so nice too. I'm at peace at last.
