Anyone who has ever had a drum teacher will be familiar with this. Good advice.

Love it! This reminds me of the guy that taught us "hands" when I marched in drum corps! Proper use of hands makes it better and more efficient! The best exercise he ever taught me was to practice rolls slowly with the SECOND beat on each hand as the heavier beat.... dut DUH dut DUH dut DUH dut DUH then double time until you keep speeding it up!

As much as I respect Todd Sucherman, I don't like how he teaches that the way he plays is the only way to play. Take a group of technically proficient drummers, and you'll find that none of them manipulate their sticks exactly the same way. Perhaps promoting his method so staunchly is his way of establishing himself as a respected authority in drum education?

I can guarantee you that nobody with great technical facility plays by pinching the index finger.

@@jordanvincenzo464 Well of course none of the fingers should be pinching the stick. There is nothing wrong with using the index finger as a fulcrum though. I think the main takeaway from this video is that we all need to make use of the back three fingers, which some drummers fail to utilize.

I agree! I love Todd and have seen his clinic live a few times but sometimes he does come off as his way is the only way. If that was the case then every drummer would play exactly the same and use the same techniques. Just like when drummers debate about traditional vs matched grip, to me it’s a stupid debate whichever one you feel comfortable with and think makes you a better player then use it. Chris Coleman plays matched grip and I’d love for anyone to try convince me it has affected his technical ability?

You and Terry Bozzio are in complete disagreement about what a good grip is…Guitar Center Terry Bozzio "Stick Techniques". It would be great if you guys got together on UA-cam to talk about your different grips. Two masters at odds about a very fundamental thing. How to hold a drumstick.
