In no way is this performance to represent authentic or recommended Djembe playing style as perceived by any traditional Djembe teacher, practitioner, drumming body or maker. This is purely a personal exploration and interpretation of the tonal and rhythmic possibilities of the reinvented fibreglass Djembe, specifically looking at the adaptation of western drum set rhythms onto a single membrane ethnic instrument.

It has been 6 years since i discovered this video, i watch it times to times but the more i watch the more i like it. I've never played an instrument in my life but because of this video, i'm sure to play one some day.
Man i have to say you groove, i celebrate the way your soundscape plays to my ear. All phrase to traditions who are the keepers and vessels of the groove, though for those who whine of not being traditional are merely stuck in a box with wax clogging their ears.....long live the groove, well done!
It's amazing hearing some of the sounds I've heard on previous djembe recordings and connecting them to the hand motions that create them.
Very cool grooves man! It's neat seeing how you can make so many sounds with just one instrument.
Nice solo man! Great mixture of different techniques and tones! The best part about your solo is that you are into it and feeling it...
which is the only way to play music!
You inspire me to continue my djimbe journey. ..
Beautiful work. Many may not of understood your sliding technique. .. but I loved it.. I was JUST speaking to another much better drummer than myself (whose been mentoring me) and told him how I wish I could incorporate sliding
....guess now I can xD
Bravo my Djimbe brother... your earned yourself a sub!
Wow, 1M views. Thanks!
Great work. Any advice for a beginner?
Work on the fundamental tones? Browse my videos. All the best.
Which firm this microphone??
Sure (sm58?)
Its a 9 inch djembe?
everybody has their own voice in music, much respect bro. very nice.
Such an emotion and sense of rhythm is something worth of everyone's respect.
Much respect! You're an amazing musician and have inspired me to pick up a djembe of my own!
Cory Burrill. So how's the drumming coming? ;)
Beautiful, natural, pure percussion - he is amazingly talented.

Thanks SO much!! I've seen many people play on this exact type of Djembe and I could never find out what it was called, you have inspired me to get a Djembe and learn how to play. I can only hope to be as good as you one day.
5 years later. Are you a master Djembe player yet?
This is wonderful, so much colour, and a human vocal quality to the sounds.
Thanks Jon, means a lot coming from you. I visited your channel, love your work on the guitar.

Pure genius! Intro reminded me of the sound fx in Mushishi, then BAM! Into the hip hop groove👍
I enjoy artists who are willing to be themselves, and often I then find that they are "self-taught." They didn't go to a school to learn to create their art just like everyone else, or to write a best-selling book because it fits the mold of what is currently selling well. Thank you for being unique, and for sharing your own interpretation of how this drum speaks to you. I hope you will keep having those conversations with this drum and letting the rest of us eavesdrop.
THIS is absolutely beautiful. You are showing us all the many voices that can come from one drum. Never stop being creative. ALWAYS keep finding new ways. ALWAYS.
commenting just to get your attention.

At the beginning it reminded me of a gentle beach tide rolling in and out.
A nice build up to a warm, enveloping rhythm. Cool.
Hey, I work better with smaller drums because they tend to have less uncontrollable overtones. However they might be tricky for larger hands. I'm glad you're fired up to explore the djembe. Keep working!
Im sold on getting a djembe now holy shit man. Mad entertaining
This is so creative and groovy that I keep coming back to it.
Beau-ti-ful….! All these sounds and intricate rhythms…! Absolutely love this 💛
I just fell in love with this instrument in the past 10 minutes appreciate the highs and lows. Took me forever to figure out what it's called. What brand is this particular instrument you're playing? I am trying to buy the cheapest high quality one possible for beginning. Thank you.
Go for a remo they are decent quality have a easy tuning system for beginners and are a little lighter as they are synthesized not hard wood they are a bit metallic tones but a 14in remo is a great instrument for a beginner
To play something like what he played you need years Bro 🙃 this instrument doesnt sound like that. He made sound like that 😬
Cheap...high quality.... oxy moron.
For me the whole video is awesome. The intro? It's ASMR! hahahah
marcosins agree he should do an ASMR video 😂😂😂

Stunning rhythms there, mate! Very inspirational! Thank you!
that was incredible, thank you for posting
This is so beautiful. Such a great talent. I always wanted to play djembe and now you motivated me even more to continue that journey. Thank you
I didn't know a single drum could sound like that
the dish washer Technic...or may be the wax in wax out? and the UFC elbow? amazing!!!! marvelous!!!!
Shawn brings a kind of 'sexy zen' to his percussive art. I love that.
Dude, that's groovy. Love it! (There's more skill there than I could readily appreciate. But I was swaying in my chair at one point)
1:45 , bless you for listening.
I keep coming back to this vid, the whole piece is just super tight.
So much emotion! This is an expression and its beautiful to see.
such a creativity! thanks for sharing!
I cant believe that there is 589 dipshits in the world that would give this a thumbs down.....This kid has a plethora of talent and gets 10 for ten in creativity and uniqueness. VERY INSPIRING VERY AWESOME
They weren't patient enough to get past the first minute. Their loss. :)
guess most people here have never seen a real djembefola…
what is creative about it oonauq?
+alby
Application. I watch an hours worth of percussion videos every lunch hour and have for over a year. I've been playing percussion insturments for 23 years and selling them for 8, and I've never seen anyone play quite like this. Obviously he didnt invent any techniques in this video, but his application, patience, and aproach in my opinion make him a VERY CREATIVE musician. my 2 cents
Plethora of talent? 23 years and this is what you think talent is? These Remos can make so many sounds and he just does a lame beat and calls it a solo....
That totally expands my scope of percussion knowledge quite a lot
Hats off to you always, you give glory to God with your creative gifts, brother!!!!
The intro is so ASMR... :D
This is amazing. I am Senegalese and it is fascinating to see how you made our traditional modern but still respectfully
das ist wunderbar.. Seine Seele ist mit Rythm
I picked up a djembe myself thanks to you man
Waoooo q ritmo
Me encanta wao wao waoooooo
Saludos desde Cali Colombia 🇨🇴❤❤❤❤❤
ASMR Djembé
Hahahahah
Was thinking the same 🤭🤣
you are my favorite djembe player. please more videos and technics
ÚNISSON ACOUSTIC cooldude
I'm a singaporean abroad, just picking up the djembe and imagine my surprise to find a fellow singaporean playing so well on youtube! Great beats there, but I have to agree with some others that the intro was too "contemporary" for my taste.
WOW! Despite the fact that this percussion instrument - I've heard the Wind !
Traditional Djembe playing or not... this is outstanding.
this is beautiful man! love it!
Very nice, I especially like your "rimshot" sound!
The first 1:45 reminds me a bit of Ross Gellar on the keyboard. No offense Shawn, you are awesome, especially on a Cajon
HAHA! I searched it, and it's quite funny: ua-cam.com/video/yLa8Br569gA/v-deo.html
Lol I just watched it for the first time in forever, so hilarious. I just ordered a Cajon from Amazon, it's the Meinl Percussion Jumbo Bass Subwoofer Cajon, I can't wait for it to come in.
Lovely. Record it if you can!
+Shawn Turbochicken I will!
But does it djemb?
Few will understand
Well someone did :)
hahaha xD

Not how you play it. But the beats are amazing and so creative. Props!
I'm sorry I shouldn't have said that but I truly do like what you have created I will make sure to read the description instead of assuming or guessing to understand what I'm watching before I comment. once again I am truly sorry.
That was so sick, nice job dude.
starts with ASMR :D
Can u play We are the World
Great playing! I bought a Remo djembe a few years back. Great drum but I still prefer an authentic Djembe honestly. Remo totally has an artificial feel/sound which I suppose is to be expected. Also it doesn’t sound like in this video. This is due to the fact that he’s playing in a recording studio with a mic. Just my two cents for anybody shopping around. Happy drumming :)
Amazing!
What size and model is this remo, love the sound
Looks like a 10 in mondo to me.
Thats right gently caress the djembe
thanks for your music, it influenced my brother Cliff. he's also a great jembe player.
This is sheer talent thats it he is unbelievable, am amzed by the sounds he pullled out of this thing djembe, my god, am highly impressed........
There's a reason those traditional people are mad at this guy. They lack the talent . so don't get mad be happy for this guy . he's bad to the bone . thanks for the video and keep rocking that drum !
Mike Oxner I thought it was good, but a lot of traditional drummers are better... this was a nice beat but little more.
+Mike Oxner If he didn't acted so much during his playing (or if I was blind) maybe I would've appreciated more what he did. It sounds nice but it's way too acted and, to be honest, his hand technique is far from perfect.
It's not about talent. It's that you know when someone plays his or hel soul through the drum, and he isn't doing that. He's trying to be impressive.
+Leandro González lets hear what you can do. i act spastic while playing. its different artist to artist. i cant judge. i like what i hear.
+Mike Oxner Exactly. We tend to acquire certain facial gestures and such, maybe look serious. It's unintentional. This guy is crearly trying to visually impress those who see him play. That's what I don't like.
I also like what I hear, his playing is good (leaving aside his technique). I'm talking about his pose, which is -to me- not quite the same as "can't control looking spastic while I play".
+Mike Oxner Absolutely .....
I find your little grunts amusing hahaha
You might be the only one who spotted them, ha!
Turbochicken Studios
no i noticed lol
Extraordinary rythmic and inventive handwork, inflicting some guttural and bodyclash moves as well. I highly approved of his energetic as well as enigmatic way of creating drum conceptions out of the ordinary. Keep on drumming and growling your own way, that's the only way to develop into a deeper understanding of the inner spirit of music!!!
I see how you're getting that pop sound by muffling the drumhead and tapping the edge with your finger, but how did you learn to do it on the fly so to speak or with such a smooth transition into and out of the movement
im still impressed when i watch this solo. love it man. we should do an online collaboration
1:30 The Neverhood
Sos genial!!!!!
HOW CAN U SAY HIM UGLY
Hasta que alfin alguien que habla español :')
Very tasty solos tb studios. I appreciate you mentioning personal adaptation and not proclaiming to be Djembe master - like a lot of 'drummers' will do on youtube, after feeling the djembe spirit, but, not having taken the time to train. Remo makes a hybrid of combination of drums - Djembes due to their popularity is definitely represented. Djembes are west-african instruments with animal skin (with various tonality - lead Djembes, bass djembes), usually 2 - 2.5 feet tall; played in combination wtih bass drums called Dunduns when playing traditionally. Djembes are constructed with metal rings and strong-rope (4mm climbing rope - traditionally using slivers of skin). Remos use metal mechnism to to tune which is not traditional - but functional for hobby drummers in drum circles. Remo shells are also fiber-glass. Different from African Hard woods that come from the area - Guinea, Mali, Ivory Coast. Bongos are afro-cuban drums, lot shorter, two drums that always come together - I know a lot less about it. Do google image search or wikipedia would be a good starting resource. If interested to buy djembe and related equipment go to www.goatskins.com (for affordable shells) and www.drumskulldrums.com (once you know enough to go pro - professional prices too but, very nice).
For enjoyment feel free to watch as much youtube videos and play along with your favorite tunes. However, if you want to start learning African Rhythms, you have to find a Djembe playing community (very popular and available in most metro areas). Best is finding an African teacher, but, a good group (very subjective) is a very good substitute. A good place to start would be watching Mamady Keita's video (available on DVD) called "Djembefola". This is a documentary, but, will give you a good foundation to start (includes some lessons as well).
turboch.studios - Those were some nice rolls in there if your solo. Do you play kit? Congas?
SHREDDING ON THE DJEMBE! I'm so inspired
*where can I find more djembe music from you?
Bu nedi ki bele🤪
Toca muito mas aquela enrolação no começo passando a mão no instrumento me fez dar deslike infelizmente !
I love what you do !!
Can you tell me the exact reference of your instrument?
Thanks
Amazing...u getting better n better ...all the best :)

Ay me muero jajajaja
1000000000000% 😂😂😂😂😂
I dig the style bro! I love the djembe
I like your passion with dynamic percussion !
Beautiful !
Bravo a pulire lo strumento 😂😂😂
Well done for not being "authentic". It's nice to hear the variation you can get on a single skin. The previous poster should learn to speak with some respect before trying to be critical, it helps!
Thanks Simon. Indeed I was looking to explore into augmented techniques for this remake of a traditional goblet drum. Technically speaking the Remo fibreglass djembes aren't authentic even. With new materials come new sounds.

Nice and sensitive touch...it sounds so nice and grovely
So psychedelic... Thanks man
You are truly talented 😉
you need a better intro. good stuff though
jelekkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
Cuma menang gaya doang. Wkwkwkwk
Most excellent. I enjoy kickin it on my djembe for peace of mind. Love the vibe.
I have to buy a Djembe now. You make it sound so interesting !
Thanks Mark!
wtf is that ?
worst intro EVER!!
good shit though.
very good rhythm. I liked the sound of Djembe
Thanks for replying. You have some nice tones with your 10". I looked at the 12" and the sound is phenoninal......remo mondo that is........i am going to get a remo earth. I got a great deal last week and had to buy bongos...... I got LP Aspires ---- 50.00 brand new! They go for 100. I lucked out. Cannot wait to start lessons. Took it to the shop to have them show me how to tune them..... I showed them what I practiced from youtube the past week they could not beleive how good I was!
you are good, but you seen very pretentious :P maybe its just me.
its just you... :)
Aaron Joyes I totally agree
Others are our mirror brother ;)
This is not even a djembe.. lol.. a cheap, synthetic, appropriated imitation... it is sad to see companies like remo appropriating and taking advantage of this traditional instrument's popularity to make sells.. Why not be honest and simply say they got the idea from the djembe and give it another name.. because this is no djembe.. not in any way whatsoever..
sjjr8787 Evolution is inevitable. While embracing origins is good, not keeping in line with technological and artistic advancement are not. As much as it is honourable to uphold traditions, new instruments and forms of artistic expression emerging from the digital connectivity we have, the market forces that sustain our economy and the experimentation of practitioners are part of a reality we all have to recognise.
+sjjr8787 Yeah but nobody got killed to make this drum
sjjr8787 totally agree. It sounds terrible
Kaye Gillanders when that leatherskin djembe get moist from condensation in the air let me know how it sounds. Not to mention I will play acoustic rock on one of these where I cannot on a traditional one. I have both.
Exactly! If nobody got killed over land or diamonds nearby this is just cultural appropriation by the white man.
Dayum! Bruh I don't see why there's even dislikes in this vids! You good man!
This is great for listening to with your eyes closed.
I can really dig into your work man!
Awesome, love your style!
