Nice. I was thinking it'd be pretty effed up if a plug jiggled loose on the landing...lasted the entire descent barely making contact and during the bounce it came unplugged.

These designers just try to make these craft too complicated. Similar happened with a US mission to Mars and that novel hammer device that failed. They just try to be too smart with unproven tech and end up screwing things up due to poor risk management. KISS Principle should always apply for such projects.

According to JAXA, it seemed that one of the two main engines failed. It seemed that the output power was cut in half a moment after it started to descent. The probe was able to maintain its controlled descent and the speed but was drifted away from the target. If the engine had not failed it would have been able to land within few meters from the target. It's all done in autonomously. They're hopeful that it should recover once the sun recharges the batteries later because nothing seems broken so far.

What about fitting a flicker to those things, like a flea, if it lands the wrong way up it could right itself automatically with gyroscopic sensor and flick feet to right itself.

Never going to happen -- NEVER! Sure, I can see a demonstration system, but there will never be large scale deployment of space based solar farms. Solar is already just about the cheapest energy source we have being limited mostly by the fact that the Sun doesn't shine 24 hours per day, but the solution to that is already in use and has been in use for more than a century -- pumped hydro! The current commercial solar panels are a bit over 20%, but multijunction solar cells based on Perovskites, when they are improved to allow them a longer lifespan, could see net efficiency increase to around 34% which is likely within 10 years. The advantage of these newer cells is that you can generate a lot more power and energy in the same area thus reducing the land requirements. Additionally, the solar farms might not need to be based on land at all as it is possible to base them in shallow ocean waters where the water depth is, say, less than 1000m deep and often less than 100m deep.
Solar panels sound like a poor man's attempt. Get serious and use Nuclear energy.

If they manage to establish a connection with SLIM and get solar power from their panels, the mission will operate for a shorter time, 6-8 days, instead of 14 days.

Slim landed on its nose with its solar panels facing west. TBF they are the first to attempt this Flip Style Landing and they will probably be able to revive the lander when the sun moves further over

I am stunned that they sent a probe to land on the moon but not a single camera on it?
The photo has already been released and the probe is nicely turned upside down.
First of all, when you are sending a probe to the moon you never the chances it will fail.. India's first try to soft land wasn't successful which had better camera than Chandrayaan 3, but its CH2's orbiter still has worlds highest quality moon camera. Second is, the more cameras, the more quality they are, the more time is gonna need to send it back to earth. Scientific experiments and the tech that you can land on moon are more important than cameras. Now in few years when the Japanese and Indians will go again, they will have the best camera to date and perform more activities..
Blue Orgin is due to apply in FAA for a New Glenn launch license as early as March.

Maybe in the future ! Human astronaut can fix the orientation of these landers, include it their mission or send a robot that can lift or manipulate a lander like a Wall-e or design some kind of utility robot, selfprotect, strong enough to move a lander!
Escapade is a category D missing that means they allow a considerably increased amount of risk on the mission allowing them to try out untried launch vehicles on the mission also I'm sure they get a discount. Escapades Launch window is about 2 weeks in August 2024 there will be other later launch windows for about 3 or four months after that depending on JPL's Pork Chop chart

Regarding a first stage rocket booster: Could the first stage be powered by a number of jet engines arranged in a ring?: I understand that the major part of fuel use is within the first several thousand feet of launch while still in the atmosphere. At this point liquid O2 would not be needed saving some weight and fuel for upper stages. Can you do a program on the pros and cons of this idea?
Japan's lander has a nice trick: having the engines on the side and flipping when landing... aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand overflipped.

A solar panel is space could potentialy generate ~10x as much as power as it would on the ground, so space based solar will be practical when launching something to Geosyncronouse obit is only 10x more then putting it on a roof, which is a hell of a long way off.
Nuclear power would have prevented this. As an American, I'm very happy for Japan's successful landing!

Nuclear power is very expensive. These vehicles are made on a light budget. According to NASA, a Nuclear generator cost around 150M $ US. Wikipedia says that the lander total budget was 121.1M USD. It is a good idea, but very expensive. Even the Webb telescope (big budget) is solar powered.

It definitely would but this was mostly an experiment to test if they can actually land. The whole mission even if everything had worked perfectly was planned to last only a couple weeks on the moon. There was no reason for JAXA to spend money on expensive Nuclear Power for this mission.

SLIM had to be 180° turned around. In other wards, when it changed direction from horizontal to vertical, then back to horizontal to land on its "side" it lost its x/y/z axis bearing so it ended up turned around or upside down iaw with the misidentified axis bearing.
It didn't misidentify anything it just lost one of its engine nozzles so much of its control was gone so it ended up upside down
@deannelson9565 it lost its axis bearings because it lost an engine nozzle. My comment was posted long before JAXA knew the nozzle melted off or had any idea what led to its landing on its head!

I often wondered why they didn't build the moon landers in the shape of a ball?
The first Russian soft lander 1960s was a ball shape which was balsa wood shell it rolled on the moon surface from its lander very primitive but it worked.

No, the easiest path for the dust to blow in would be sideways, and with no atmospheric drag, the dust would travel several feet away from the spacecraft. Only way dust could cover the solarpanels would be if it was a hard landing.
I take it the rovers were sent too far off for them to put their cameras on the lander to see what happened? There hasn't been any reports on what their up too aside their announced missions / tasks their doing.

China’s yutu2 landed two years ago and still operating unlike this Jaxa or chandrayan 3 that cannot last more than one lunar day because they cannot survive the cold lunar night.

Using the popular low bar adage "any landing you walk away from is successful," then the SLIM was successful. However, for Japan's first official (the private Japanese moon lander Hakuto-R crashed in late April) seemed excessively ambitious. Instead of using the more traditional low center of gravity landing legs they decided on an untried rather exotic roll on your side with crush landing pads approach. It seemed doomed to failure from the beginning. I am sure the Japanese will learn from the attempt and better luck next time. Next up, Intuitive Machines' Nova-C lander being launched on a Falcon 9 in February.
Using that janky flip on landing maneuver was probably not a good idea.

The Soviets launched three successful sample return missions (Luna 16, 20 and 24) IN THE EARLY 70s!! How the hell did they do it if it's super hard to do in 2024. Hat's off to the comrades 🙃🙂
The main issue with SBSP (Space Based Solar Power) is the assumption that solar panels must be manufactured and launched "from earth". Taking a quick glance at the report shows they did account to some degree that launch costs will come down but are rightly skeptical of the order of magnitude the Starship claims to be aiming for as SpaceX and Elon Musk have a way with overpromising and being late with delivery, eventually they will get things to work but NASA is being cautious presenting their results to not give people false hope, though I am sure many there would be happy to be proven wrong and the cost to LEO drop to 100$/kg or so. The other option to lower costs is to pull a Daniel Suarez asteroid and lunar crypto station heist, but I doubt that will happen.

That why they must develop self energy re-generating system the light that will heat the solar panels this way not only the sun can generate energy but itself. Also use generator that use battery instead of gas ⛽ petrol. This way make sure it run multiple system also wind 🌬️🍃 system. Alot is missing
