Audi tech here. I started mentally screaming "fuel pump" as soon as you described the symptom. Glad you guys eventually got it figured out. Hope you never have to deal with intake runner faults on that motor. Two vacuum solenoids, two vacuum reservoirs (one under the intake), two intake flap positions sensors, a vacuum actuator, and vacuum lines next to the engine.
Thanks for the comment! Yes there is always a learning curve with the Euros that for most people ends with curse words and broken plastic xD Oh and by the way both plastic runner actuator arms were SNAPPED CLEAN OFF at the vacuum actuators. I don't think the customer cared much about that anyways LOL
Ha. Unfortunately, that's somewhat common. Did another shop install them? Those runners have to be held in the open position with a handheld vacuum pump before you install them. The flaps can get caught on the wrong side of the intake port dividers if you don't hold them open before installing, and you'll get get fault codes saying that both banks are stuck closed. It's a common mistake we see from other shops that replace them. BUT, a failing solenoid can also cause those faults to set, and people often forget about the one under the intake manifold. As a side note, you don't have to put the front end in the service position to access the vacuum components on the front of the engine, but you will need tiny hands, needle nose pliers, and a pry bar.
poopwilson hey I have a 06 Audi A8L it starts up fine drives fine but randomly it will rev up really high then the esp and epc lights will come on and it won’t allow me to accelerate. I have to turn the car off leave it off for s min or so then turn it back on and it will SOMETIMES let me drive normally Any idea why?
I've got one of this cars. Sometimes it just clicks when I turn the key. It doesn't start again for a couple of days or sometimes weeks. Love the car but it drives me crazy. Any idea?
You all were up late, great work ethics! That was a fun one. It reminded me of cross feeding fuel in an airplane. Fuel pumps everywhere! Team work at it's best right there.
Haa...Nice current ramp on the main fuel pump. Pays to do research sometimes on the weird ones and learn from other fixes. Nice video with you & Keith...Next to 7.6
Had the same problem, changed a valve cover passenger side put it all back together and started it, it ran for 1 minute and shut off. Watched you're video and did the hammer trick and no bullshit it worked. From me and those who know it worked a big thanks.
As some said before it has 2 fuel pumps. One is the main that the car actually runs on the other is used to prime the engine at start up. The main pump in this car has failed. In the trunk, under the carpet there are 2 access covers for both pumps so they can be easily accessed. I don't remember which side is which pump.
Had a problem like this on my A4 04 Quattro 3.0. It has suction pump instead on the driver side though instead of a full on pump. Uses the Venturi affect to siphon gas between. My problem was stalling, hard starts, sluggish, and then when it got under 1/4 tank it wouldn't start/run. The fuel pump would pressurize the line, but there would be no fuel in them, lol. This is my first Euro car, so it's been a learning curve. Haven't shelled out the 300 bucks for the new sender/pump unit yet, so I make sure to keep it above 1/2 tank now...lol. Keep up the good work, I enjoy your videos very much!
Information is the key. What kills us as techs are flat rate diagnosis. What would a dealer tech get for Dx if it was under warranty? I use Identifix simply for speed. As one reader said on IATN we cannot make a science project out of the repair. We do not have time for a complete Dx so we have to use all tools available. No need to reinvent the wheel. Great video.
great video! I love fixing stuff with hammers lol, what I really like is that you got the key information that you needed from identifix, I can almost guarantee an audi dealership wouldn't have that information
Compared to the cost of A8, how much more would one fuel pressure pressure sensor be? And some lines of code to keep aux pump running if pressure drops with main. + fault code. With Volvo V70, two fuel level sensors. When one gets stuck, you run out of fuel with a gauge showing half a tank..
First time meeting two fuel pumps side by side on the blessed Audi.A lot of anti euro engineering on the channel.Fuel pumps give out on every make and model. In my experience, the German manufactured product is better in quality than a lot of others here in Europe. Great fix and diagnosis but there ain't a lot of dollars to be made in trunks except for Scotty Kilner 😁.
It doesn't surprise me that the computer didn't log a trouble code. Ran into a similar situation with a Cummins Def Pump. It gave me a 3582 code for Nox inefficiency and I found out the def pump was only drawing 200 milli Amps and it should draw over 2 on a good one. No circuit code. I see more of these issues all the time. You would think computers and software would be better but that is still not the case. I have had 2013 Buses give me issues and I could only find and confirm the issue with a scope.
More German please!!!!! PS: thx for telling us that this was the result after a somewhat lengthy diagnosis... i would've started to rip my nails off... you already make us feel so slow ;) ... Cheers!
Fixing an Audi with a hammer...I always thought they even require special tools for taking a door handle off. You're McGyver Ivan...there is no other valid explanation.
the wonders of internet diagnosis, i use it often as well..Good pickup on the dual pumps who would have thought, i must be getting old as i cant think of any good reason to have 2 except DOUBLE TROUBLE, concept just been proved over engineered to last 13 years lol, not too bad i guess.
I have an '05 and this is a pretty common failure point. I replaced mine proactively at 100k so that I wouldn't get stranded. The pumps are not that expensive and a pretty easy swap compared to the D2 platform. The pass side is the one to change, I haven't heard of anyone having the secondary pump on the drivers side fail. These cars are pretty bulletproof, I wouldn't let this issue scare anyone. The other thing to do proactively is the crank position sensor which is around $150 and they fail regularly. It's hard to get to on the D3 but it's an easy swap once you have your hand on it.
mines had the cam tensioners stick causing the shoes to get knocked off and around. skipped timing and hasn't started since. Currently in the shop with a bill thats exponentially rising as we speak.
1:50 looks like the fuel tank is about empty. maybe enough to prime the pump and get some pressure in the lines, but having trouble keeping up with demand when the engine is running? *sits back with fingers crossed to watch some more*
Hi. PLEASE HELP ... You have very interesting and educational videos. Which helps a save lot of money. I have the same problem as the video. After 40 seconds, I turned the Audi A8. when I hold it over 3000 rpm then it will not go out, but as soon as I let it go it gone it quits. I tried to hit the right hopper tank with a hammer, so it does work but it will not get any more gas. I removed the electronic connector from the right pump, nothing changed. When I removed it from the left, my car could not start until I came back. Can you help me to work, some advice. Can a fuel filter be defective ?
167k in 13 years- my '89 Buick has 162k. It's so strange- how some people beat nice cars- but baby old beaters. Will this '04 still be going in 2033? Highly doubtful- unless someone really takes care of it.
A lot of cars with a "split" tank require two pumps, like Subarus. The hidden variable here was that the car could actually run on the auxillary pump alone!!
Hmmm, I wonder why Ford installed an in tank fuel pump and also a secondary external inline pump towards the front of my '87 Ranger 2.3L FI? I didn't know about the Subaru split tanks, thanks
It was very common in the 80s for vehicles to have a "lift" pump in the tank and a booster under the vehicle. Perhaps they didn't have fuel pumps with enough head pressure to run single-stage? With the advent of direct injection, many new vehicles once again have two fuel pumps: a lift pump in the tank and a cam-driven high pressure pump on the engine.
Everything that has a hump due to rear driveshaft has a split fuel tank. Audis, Subarus etc. But Subaru only has ONE pump and relies on vacuum (jet pump) to pull the other side of tank. They don't use two pumps, at least on the older ones. Only Germans would install two or three pumps in one tank. Subaru is Japanese. They use physics. Germans have zero understanding of physics (Venturi effect). They are all technicians with no college degrees. Thats why only Germans would install two fuel pumps into a single gas tank, lol.
Personally i hate Audi as it seems that every one i deal with is nothing but a headache. When you complete the repair there always seams to be other issues with the car that may or may not have an affect on your repair. Once you have an understanding of how the German technology works it's usually not hard to diagnose.
Cars like this would require an investment many times their actual worth to make them "perfect". Most owners just do the bare minimum to keep them rolling. This one had packing tape holding the fancy inner expandable door panel from falling out lol
hello sir good after noon. I have udi A8 2010 model this car have engine shut off problem while idling after warm up. no have fault code the ecm and related control modul. then after im remove the fuel filter out side one and check its have dirty fuel filter. change filter and drove the car got it same problem.after swap the fuel pump relay and drove the car one week after came back the same problem
So identifix helped you this time ? I always hear you talking crap about techs who use identifix ? Not being a hater but sometimes we have to use all the resources out there to fix a vehicle ( having VCDS WOULD'VE HELPED YOU A LOT ) Also I'm not sure why most techs or mechanics hate working on European vehicles. They are not the easiest to work but definitely if you take care of them they don't break as much as the domestic crap . I work at a shop where we work on European cars on a daily basis and let me tell you, we always get that one pain in the ass car but we still repair it. Well I'm a huge fan of you , Eric O and scanner danner. You guys do an excellent job out there .
Pablo Martinez we had the vcds hooked up. And yet no related codes whatsoever. I can honestly say that the euro junk we see here easily outweighs possible domestic failure with one big difference. Most who own these expensive euro imports live outside their means and cannot afford to maintain them. They purchase them as a status symbol but scoff at the idea of paying 400 dollars for a proper set of pads and rotors.
ONBOARDTECH333 , well I didn't say it would set a code. As long as you are familiar with the VCDS and how to look the advance measuring blocks , you shouldn't have any problems to diagnose a drivability concern like that one. Now you are talking about people unable to afford the repairs on European cars ( which I didn't mention at all ), I would have to completely agree with you on that one. But our job as techs is to diagnose the vehicle and the customer would have to approve the diagnosis fee beforehand . Whether they can afford the repair or not, that's not our problem as long as we do what we are being paid for . And still, American vehicles break a lot more than European vehicles even when all the maintenance items are done on time and properly .
Thats a weird design. So if it could run on the secondry pump that means that either both had their own seperate plumbing to the fuel rail and another line to transfer fuel into the other tank? Seems like a lot of trouble to go to. It also seems to me like it should have been able to detect that the primary pump was dead. Run on the secondry pump full time and set a code. With all that German over engineering in there.
I drive a Japanese AWD car with two fuel tanks. There's the electric pump but tank #2 has a jet pump running off of the electric pump. This a better design since jet pumps never fail (if you don't know what a jet pump is, look it up. The jet pump keeps the tank under the electric pump full until tank #2 is empty. So, you need two fuel level sensors. The gauge reading is the average created by a computer. This is where better becomes only slightly better.
Weird. I have mostly worked on diesels of Audis of this generation but they seem to get fault codes on so many things while still working perfectly so I would have imagined that this would surely be monitored and flag a code.
This is why I despise eurotrash, good on Kieth for the research. I find many many problem with web research. We have an Import/Euro shop in our area that specializes in these. I've worked out a deal with him. I refer all major work on these to him and he pays me a referral fee. I just don't want to deal with them anymore.
Can't blame you! Even Keith says that Euro diags are not profitable for him since in the time it takes to do a typical Euro diag, he could knock out like 5 "regular" cars haha
Hi . I have same issue with my 2006 audi a4 2.0 all started after a coolant leak after i replace the termostat were i had the leak. change gas tank pump, high pressure pump, purge valve, coolant sensor. i had a mechanic who actually said that the mechanic who change my termostat didnt connect one of my fuel pipe which cause the car to not getting the right fuel so he recommended that i change out the high pressure fuel pump which i end up doing but ive been still having the same problem with car warms it stalled like battery i dead and when cool down it starts again. please help maybe i have air in the gas line as ive read on and article that it could be air is that something you would recommend?
More Fuel Volume. As its a AWD Car, it needs a Driveshaft. Usually the Tank is where the Driveshaft is, so you have a Tank on the Left and one on the Right and pump the Fuel from A to B
thanks for the info i , but i dont think every 4wd car has that problem , i dont believe my 328xi had a split tank or double pump and also it was a 4wd and pretty low to the ground car
I don't see the point of even having 2 fuel pumps well like mostly all cars on the roads today start and run fine with just one fuel pump. Sounds like Audi is trying to make you spend more money on repairs.
I have a 06 Audi A8L it starts up fine drives fine but randomly it will rev up really high then the esp and epc lights will come on and it won’t allow me to accelerate. I have to turn the car off leave it off for s min or so then turn it back on and it will SOMETIMES let me drive normally anyone have Any idea why? I’ve taken it too a few shops and no one.can figure it out
I would guess at a faulty abs/speed sensor on the wheel... i had a car that i thought was possessed, it would randomly accelerate and it was the abs sensor
Mechanic's dream. 2004 Audi A8 with New York plates.
good find gentleman! having the knowledge with the correct equipment/information sources makes a huge difference!

Nice job Ivan & Keith. In those Mafia movies they have dead bodies in the trunk...not a Verus!? Weird!?!
Hi Ivan and Keith, Identifix is a great help, I use it on daily basis. Good diagnosis as usual.
I having this same issue with my 2004 Audi A8. Thanks for the info bro. You Rock…
Had the same problem, changed a valve cover passenger side put it all back together and started it, it ran for 1 minute and shut off. Watched you're video and did the hammer trick and no bullshit it worked. From me and those who know it worked a big thanks.
Cool! Now replace that fuel pump!
Where exactly did you hit the hammer on?
That last current trace, with all of the dead spots, is very cool !
Scotty Kilmer - "just get a toyota"
He may be a bit of a hack, but he does have at least some good advice
Bad Drivers of North Texas, that would be a Scotty fix!

So when the gas level drops just make really hard left turns to prevent stalling haha
That did cross my mind, lol.

Best mechanic on youtube. Love your videos keep it up my dude!
great video! I love fixing stuff with hammers lol, what I really like is that you got the key information that you needed from identifix, I can almost guarantee an audi dealership wouldn't have that information
Good confirmation at the end, showing that dead spot. I wonder why they have two fuel pumps, evidently serving different purposes.
Compared to the cost of A8, how much more would one fuel pressure pressure sensor be? And some lines of code to keep aux pump running if pressure drops with main. + fault code.

"It said Snap On on it." Classic.
Do we have a Von Dorman substitute available?

yup, Engineers can't account for every possible scenario. That's why a logical hands-on approach is still the only way to fix em :)
More German please!!!!!
PS: thx for telling us that this was the result after a somewhat lengthy diagnosis... i would've started to rip my nails off... you already make us feel so slow ;) ... Cheers!
Fixing an Audi with a hammer...I always thought they even require special tools for taking a door handle off.

subbed your channel after watching your video with Eric O on mitsubishi, O2 sensor problem. Great video and discussion.

the near empty tank is clue, owner probably drives on empty/low more than not. I wonder how that helps fuel pumps :)
I have an '05 and this is a pretty common failure point. I replaced mine proactively at 100k so that I wouldn't get stranded. Did you have a rich smell coming from the exhaust?a blueish smoke coming from the exhaust?
excelente diagnostic amigo
Ouch. Easy on the Euro Engineering jibes. Some of the best Engineers in History came from Scotland, and we are still in Europe, at the moment.
You will always be in Europe. FYI Scotland is NOT and never has been a member of the EU
Now this is a car 👌🏻
"Keith 'The Guru' DeFazio" using Identifix for the win. Data rules!

Great Ivan German cars, great video also
Good job bro. Cheers
mines had the cam tensioners stick causing the shoes to get knocked off and around. skipped timing and hasn't started since. Currently in the shop with a bill thats exponentially rising as we speak.
Two fuel pumps!!! They don't know what else to come up with in order to mess with people.
No 4wd and Quatro passengercars have split tanks due to the rear diff. so they need 2 pump, sounds logic LOL
Ivan, I am curious to know how much these repairs would cost in New York City compared to Pine Hollow?
In general the labor rate in Central PA is $70/hr. Here in NYC it's at least $100/hour.
"Is it an expensive hammer Keith" It is now.
2 fuelpumps is required with the Quatro I suppose.
grate diagnosis i love your videos
Where exactly you was hitting the hammer ?
Where's voltage sense on this pcm to set a code? I'll bet if that happened on that BMW you did a couple of days ago, you would have had a code.
1:50 looks like the fuel tank is about empty. maybe enough to prime the pump and get some pressure in the lines, but having trouble keeping up with demand when the engine is running? *sits back with fingers crossed to watch some more*
Edit: Guessed wrong. But guessing is part of the fun when I'm watching these vids. :-D
When you run these cars on a very low tank, they start to do this. everytime, always keep these over a quarter tank.
Please for help I have the same problem with my Audi a8 4.2. What do I have to exchange
that's a beautiful car. complicated engineering yes, but look how well all that tech crap held up for the miles.
its only got 167k miles on it
167k in 13 years- my '89 Buick has 162k. It's so strange- how some people beat nice cars- but baby old beaters. Will this '04 still be going in 2033? Highly doubtful- unless someone really takes care of it.
Hold on --have a look at the suspension falling apart (not rusting) on all the Euro Crap
Brad Noyes 167,000 miles in Staten Island might as well be 250,000 miles on any other car....
You have no way of knowing how much of that tech crap has been replaced over the years.
Two fuel pumps is over engineered crap. Good diagnostics
A lot of cars with a "split" tank require two pumps, like Subarus. The hidden variable here was that the car could actually run on the auxillary pump alone!!
Yes! as long as left side of the tank has fuel.
Hmmm, I wonder why Ford installed an in tank fuel pump and also a secondary external inline pump towards the front of my '87 Ranger 2.3L FI? I didn't know about the Subaru split tanks, thanks

whats the easiest way to understand how to read the code scanners you use!!!

Why don't cars have a fuel pressure sensor?
Are you still available. I have my car at a mechanic and my car still giving me problems

Cam se sors.. Crank se sor wont let it atart.. Cams wont let it odle after cold start program shuts off and looks for cam se sor
the steering colum has a sensor for the key if this is broken it stalls because it thinks it's being stolen

My 06 A8L won't start just turns over. I have to codes P0688 and P1602. Ran fine before.
You pay me a small amount to hit it with a hammer and a large amount for knowing where to hit it :))
Thats a weird design. So if it could run on the secondry pump that means that either both had their own seperate plumbing to the fuel rail and another line to transfer fuel into the other tank? I have a 2008 and mines just started doing the same I could go to work come home no problem and go out again and have trouble starting 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️

STEVE ROB you never know. Could be my next project car 😎

I've worked out a deal with him. I refer all major work on these to him and he pays me a referral fee. I just don't want to deal with them anymore.
Can't blame you! Even Keith says that Euro diags are not profitable for him since in the time it takes to do a typical Euro diag, he could knock out like 5 "regular" cars haha
was it a german hammer ?
leave it to an Audi... I used to work for Audi Volkswagon here in Tulsa, those damned things always have electrical issue's..
Hi . I have same issue with my 2006 audi a4 2.0 all started after a coolant leak after i replace the termostat were i had the leak. change gas tank pump, high pressure pump, purge valve, coolant sensor. i had a mechanic who actually said that the mechanic who change my termostat didnt connect one of my fuel pipe which cause the car to not getting the right fuel so he recommended that i change out the high pressure fuel pump which i end up doing but ive been still having the same problem with car warms it stalled like battery i dead and when cool down it starts again. please help maybe i have air in the gas line as ive read on and article that it could be air is that something you would recommend?
oh boy...sounds like you need to try mechanic #3 ;)
"stalls like the battery is dead"...well does the engine crank over? Then battery is not dead. If it doesn't crank, then chase that problem.
No parts required! :)
can someone explain why two pumps and split tanks? what are they achieving with this
More Fuel Volume.
As its a AWD Car, it needs a Driveshaft. Usually the Tank is where the Driveshaft is, so you have a Tank on the Left and one on the Right and pump the Fuel from A to B
Same as some pickups with "saddle" tanks.
Funny how Subaru managed to figure out how to use just one fuel tank lol
Cause Subaru´s are great cars.
thanks for the info i , but i dont think every 4wd car has that problem , i dont believe my 328xi had a split tank or double pump and also it was a 4wd and pretty low to the ground car
let me guess...one thousand dollars for a new pump.
Lol... every thing on these cars is a $1000
Interesting!
I don't see the point of even having 2 fuel pumps well like mostly all cars on the roads today start and run fine with just one fuel pump. Sounds like Audi is trying to make you spend more money on repairs.
duel fuel pumps, i replaced both mines at once....VDO @$249 a pop.
I’ve taken it too a few shops and no one.can figure it out
did the shops have vag-com diagnostics? this is a must
I would guess at a faulty abs/speed sensor on the wheel... i had a car that i thought was possessed, it would randomly accelerate and it was the abs sensor
Fixed with a hammer? It's German. All it understands is force. (From Hogans Heroes....)
I thought foreign cars never break? At least that's what certain foreign loving car owners I know say.
try adding some fuel to the tank. lol
Two fuel pumps. Thts y i hate audi. N bmw n merc r much more sensibe cars
looks like its out of gas , oh nevermind
Ahh Vorsprung Durch Technik .
When you translate means ( piles of German crap).
