Mother Jones Catches Bill O'Reilly Lying About Falkland Island War Coverage

  • "After NBC News suspended anchor Brian Williams for erroneously claiming that he was nearly shot down in a helicopter while covering the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, Fox News host Bill O'Reilly went on a tear. On his television show, the top-rated cable news anchor declared that the American press isn't "half as responsible as the men who forged the nation." He bemoaned the supposed culture of deception within the liberal media, and he proclaimed that the Williams controversy should prompt questioning of other "distortions" by left-leaning outlets. Yet for years, O'Reilly has recounted dramatic stories about his own war reporting that don't withstand scrutiny-even claiming he acted heroically in a war zone that he apparently never set foot in.
    O'Reilly has repeatedly told his audience that he was a war correspondent during the Falklands war and that he experienced combat during that 1982 conflict between the United Kingdom* and Argentina. He has often invoked this experience to emphasize that he understands war as only someone who has witnessed it could. As he once put it, "I've been there. That's really what separates me from most of these other bloviators. I bloviate, but I bloviate about stuff I've seen. They bloviate about stuff that they haven't."
    Fox News and O'Reilly did not respond to multiple requests for comment.*

    The Falklands war was conducted within an exclusion zone - just a couple of Brits reporters attached to the military were granted limited access - UK policy was not to escalate the war to the mainland unless napalm or other banned weapons occurred - Bill was defiantly not in a war zone there

    • @LouisKing995
      @LouisKing995 9 років тому +3

      Yeah they were pretty strict on the exclusion zone. One of the most controversial decisions during the war was the Sinking of the Argentine battleship Belgrano. Thatcher decided it hadn't left the exclusion zone in time so the Royal Navy sank it. There was no way he was getting anywhere near those islands.

    • @trevortrevortsr2
      @trevortrevortsr2 9 років тому +2

      LouisKing995 Indeed it was controversial - and probably saved a lot of lives

    • @SSCFPA
      @SSCFPA 9 років тому +5

      LouisKing995 Not quite right, Belgrano was the southern tip of a pincer, the Argie aircraft carrier and escorts were to the north. Belgrano was zig zagging in and out of the zone, the RN Sub tracking it warned London that the enemy ship was about to go over a large underwater mountain range which could cause the sonar tracking to be lost. Knowing enemy forces were also to the north London gave the order to sink the Belgrano. The Argentine carrier then ran to home as did the rest of the Argentine navy like the pussies they were. Later the commander of the Belgrano who survived said he would have done the same if he had been the British.

    • @trevortrevortsr2
      @trevortrevortsr2 9 років тому +3

      SSCFPA It had to be sunk though old it had large guns capable of sinking a small aircraft carrier or messing up the landing - looking back it was madness to send out a WW2 cruiser into waters known to have Brit hunter killer subs on the prowl - It was a crime to put that museum piece to sea

    • @trevortrevortsr2
      @trevortrevortsr2 8 років тому

      VideoAudioDisco09 Well you can speculate that I guess - We imagine it was more like "we should not miss this chance of sinking one half of the pincer movement " The sub that did it has been in a museum for 2 decades - the Ship that sank should have been half a century ago - it was cruel sending them brave lads out in an WW2 antique knowing there were British nuclear hunter killer subs there

    I grew up in Northern Ireland, in Belfast in fact. There was no war zone in Northern Ireland. There was very serious terrorist activity, but no actual war zone. What happened was that terrorists would plant bombs in Belfast (the city I lived in) or Derry and they would go off. Journalists were there covering those events, but the journalists were never in any danger because they were covering terrorist events. They would turn up after a bomb had gone off in a building and film the wreckage. They would interview the families of the victims. All sensible stuff, but they were not taking any personal risks and no journalist who had really been to Northern Ireland during that period of terrorism would say that they were placing themselves at risk by being there.
    Bill O'Reilly is a liar.

    'I was in a combat situation in Argentina during the Falklands war' - How has anyone not picked up on the fact yet that the Falklands war didn't take place in Argentina. The people he was telling that to should have been lucid enough to point that out. The clue is in the name. It took place in the Falklands and on two other islands.

    Gotta give you this Cenk - Northern Ireland was NEVER a shooting war, (I'm a 57 year old Irish Nationalist). There were certainly many violent protests over the thirty years of the "Troubles" that occasionally lead to shooting, (the worst being Bloody Sunday 1972 - see Wikipedia), but none ever lasted long enough for a US film crew to turn up in time to cover it. Northern Ireland was essentially a covert war - with 99% of the time being lived as an uneasy peace. I deeply resent O'Reilly misrepresenting the Northern Ireland conflict to promote bullshit mountain - he brings shame to his name.

    It occurred to me when I saw people like O'Reilly and Megyn Kelly NOT distancing themselves from Brian Williams and flatly condemning him that something is at work here. What could it be? It shouldn't matter what your political beliefs are....if a journalist lies, ALL other journalists should shun him and distance themselves. Its the ultimate sin in journalism. When I didn't see this from those two, I knew right then that they knew they had done the same thing in the past but just hadn't been caught....YET. Its pretty sad that major news people like this can do these things and not be immediately removed for good. Yet we still see the door left slightly open for Williams to someday return. Why? But... Argentina failed in their attempted invasion of the Falklands, very, very badly - it lead to the total collapse of their military dictatorship. If O'Reilly was even there he certainly didn't help them!
    And we specifically did NOT pursue the Argentines back on to their own ground - with a supply line literally thousands of miles long that would have been insane. Just the Vulcan bombing raids against various targets on the islands required huge, multi-staged planning with mid-air refueling by tankers which themselves required mid-air refuelling... It simply did not happen.

    As a serving British soldier...I find it offensive that some journalist asshole is taking credit by claiming that he was in a warzone when he clearly wasn't.
    Its an insult to the men on both sides of the Falklands war(or any war for that matter) who was on the ground fighting, dying and getting injured.

    The hilarious thing is I remember Al Franken telling Bill O'Reilly he was a liar right in front of his face. This was a long time ago. I don't know what the thing was but Bill was on a panel on the stage and Al was at the podium telling a story about how O'Reilly claimed to have won Peabody Award(s) for Inside Edition. Franken checked with the Peabody people who said they never heard of such a thing. Franken was telling this story to the audience and Bill's head seemed like it was going to explode. He has always been a smug liar and continues to be.

    “I was not on the Falkland Islands, and I never said I was. I was in Buenos Aires,” he explained. “In Buenos Aires we were in a combat situation after the Argentines surrendered.”
    "He said he was in the war zone during the Falkland Island conflicts - the conflict was in the Falkland Islands, it was not in Buenos Aires,” Corn said to the Politico blog. “He covered a protest after the war was over in Buenos Aires. I don’t think that’s a reasonable definition of a combat situation. If you look up ‘combat situation’ in the dictionary, it’s not ‘an ugly protest.’’’
    Bill, Bill, Bill, ...what day is it? Now, following the gospel according with O'Reilly, Ferguson protests were combat situations, Wow!! Only in fox news. Only there.
    Just like fox and Giuliani, o'Reilly doesn't talk to the nation as a whole, instead they talk to please certain very peculiar districts composed of a well defined and loyal clientele who happens to vote republican, just that, and then they get so mad when they are unable to win a general election. Fox admits it is an entertainment station, not REAL news, however, ultra conservative, ultra reactionary, blatant nativistic right wingers take fox news as a gospel. What a sad story. Should be the "Limbaugh genes" deeply embedded in their chromosomes. They are hard-wired by nature, like reptiles. A sad story indeed.

    There were no US hacks with the UK forces, either on land or ships, except that one NBC guy, not that we saw anything he did. Hell, there were not many UK press there even. The Ministry Of Defence even initially putting all of them on a naval supply ship loaded with ammunition! Only after a row were they dispersed more readily.
    Northern Ireland? Could be rough if you were too near a bomb but it was/is a developed nation not some remote place.
    A soldier in the Falklands - where he wasn't - levelled a M-16 at Bill?
    Argentina did not use them, some UK SF troops did.
    Bill was in zero risk in Argentina.

    Northern Ireland wasn't a War Zone. I spent Easter there (in 1980 or 81, can't remember) visiting a college friend on his parent's farm. Went to some bars, watched some kart racing, saw some really nice scenery and met some good people.There were places where you didn't go (I am English), lots of checkpoints and certainly violence over the years, including bombings and murders, which took a toll on ordinary people of both sides of the divide but a War Zone? Rubbish.

    There were only a handful of instances that can be described as 'war zone' during the troubles in Northern Ireland. The reality of it was a shooting here and a bomb blast there every other day and kids throwing bricks at British army vehicles after school but that all quickly became every day life. It was bad but definitely not an atmosphere you would describe as a war zone. Syria right now is a war zone, Kobane is a war zone, Northern Ireland was just dangerous.
