This video shows how to replace the sump pump switch on a submersible unit. I've installed over 200 sump pumps in my life and I prefer the vertical switch units. The Ridgid brand shown in this video is used to demonstrate how a simple switch can get you back up and running in just a short time. I emphasize the importance of removing your sump pump after unplugging the unit. Please make sure there is no power cord plugged in before you attempt the repair. This is why I like pedestal pumps. Motor not under water to get all that corrosion and backup switch is $10 instead of $30. Finally you can make the repair without having to re-plumb and pull unit.

Water really isn't the issue. It's the cycle wear. I've gone thru 5 of these Ridged 1HP pumps over the years. Originally they had lifetime warranties, then dropped to 5 year after seeing their switches don't last long. Problem is if you flood you don't have time for a repair, unless you have a switch ready to go. As to why I just bought another $260 Rigid 1HP pump again last week.. You used to be able to find them on eBay for like $30, but not anymore. Luckily this last pump lasted about 4 years. I've never been able to get Home Depot to replace one under warranty, even w/ the receipt. But they did send one in for repair, which they knew meant I'd have to buy another one while it was fixed.
Ridgid (no longer supporting this pump) also sent me a one time free, top kit/float switch, assembly. Since then, it is always a struggle to find, available Wayne pump, parts for this pump.

I thought you were going to show us how to fix the switch but you replaced it instead. Still a helpful video.
The inside of the switch area was very corroded, probably beyond repair. The only fix it to replace the switch.
Nice had you been able to give model number of the replacement so we could look it up as they're pretty hard to find anymore.

I know this Is so old. But my pump is smoking up and is not filling up with water. Also a brand new unit.
I'm wondering if the impeller is turning? Sometimes a pump can pick up a peastone or gravel and jam the impeller. Also wondering with it being brand new, has it ever worked? Is the check valve backwards? Maybe it's a bad unit if everything looks okay.
Can i bypass the float switch temperarily? We are afraid the water has no drained because we havnt heard the sump pump turn on but it turns on when i checked the plug on its own without the float switch
It's been awhile since I made this video to remember if there's a piggyback plug. If there is, then you can plug the pump in without the piggyback and see if you hear it turn on and pumping out water. Good luck with it, let me know how it goes...
Where did you purchase the replacement kit??? I'm in trouble it's pouring cats and dogs here and the husband is out of town for 2 weeks. I'm handy and think this is simple but I need to buy the float switch. Please help. My pump is a Wayne but they all look pretty much the same. Thanks
I looked up the contact information from my sump pump company and talked with a tech support person who send one to me, even though it was out of warranty. I don't recall seeing them in the big box stores.
I called Ridgid and they gave me the replacement part number for the float top replacement kit for my pump model. You can't buy it from Ridgid, but I was able to buy it at SupplyHouse.com
Hello I'm having problems with my pump when I turn on the power I can hear it turn on but is not pumping water out my sprinklers do you have any idea of what it could be thanks in advance
It's possible that a small stone or piece of gravel got wedged in the impeller. You may need to unplug the sump pump and then see if it turns freely. I've done this before to make it work again.

Mine is not working since yesterday how can i know what s going with it.
Chaperon Winchelle as long as there’s power at the outlet and the impeller isn’t jammed with a small stone, then it narrows it down to the switch. It seems like the first thing to go.
What if the float became detached at the bottom? I'm trying to figure out how to get that reattached to prevent the float from drifting off in the basin and falling off the switch.
It's hard for me to say without looking at it. Zip ties often come in handy for a quick fix.

Great video - thanks. I am disappointed, however, in the quality of this RIGID unit. Replace the switch every three years!? I have a Zoeller M53 in another location and that thing is indestructible for the same money.
Yes, that was very surprising to me too. I just keep running this one and have a backup in case it goes out.
My Zoeller has been going strong for just over 25 years now. I haven't touched it in that time, but it's just now acting up. I had bought a Wayne 1hp at an auction years ago figuring best to be prepared. I opened the box just a day ago to see that it wasn't set right (where the three bolts he says not to touch in this video) so last night I decided I'd try and fix that and instead made a mess and just decided I'd buy a new one and use this one I have as parts for it. Hopefully I'll get a few years out of this Wayne model and I'll get myself a Zoeller or something that's the best thing out there again after. Sad to see so many products just aren't built with the same quality parts they used to be. I've still got the Zoeller that was replaced over 25 years ago too. Maybe I'll open them up and try to recondition them to have one great unit again. You'd think they'd have a program of taking the old ones back to reuse the old iron castings again, but I haven't heard a thing about that.
Great video m8 however Rigid has discontinued the Float switch assembly I need for my SP500. Have any work around?

When stuff gets discontinued, only way would be to find a third-party supply shop that may still have the parts or replace the whole pump entirely.

Not that I recall seeing in the instructions.
Is a loud "clunk" noise when the sump pump finishes draining, normal?
Yes, I often hear something like that. It may be the check valve closing.

Clunk sound is just the sound of water in the pipe banging when pump stops.....very normal
Check valve. You can get "quiet" ones...well worth the money, IMHO

The owners manual had a number to call and they sold me the replacement switch. I'm guessing it's the Wayne Pump Co.

Sorry I don't have a link. I believe I found the information for the switch from my owners manual.
While your video is helpful you should try to have someone else looking through the video viewfinder. Sometimes you were too close or too far.
That for the info. I use a different camera now that has a flip up screen.

I wish people would understand the difference between 'repair' and 'replace'. In this video, you're doing the latter. This is a replacement, not a repair.

Good idea. My sump pump has a Fernco check valve that's about 2' above the top of the floor. It's very easy to take out. You unplug the sump pump, then unscrew the hose clamp on the check valve and you can have it out in about 1-2 minutes. Just make sure the clamp doesn't fall into the sump crock by accident. Hope that helps!
