    I'm going to be jumping (well really trotting, but just in case the horse decides to jump lol) my first Cavaletti next week and I wanted to learn how to sit right in case anything goes wrong, and this really helped me figure out how I'm gonna have to sit in the event that the horse actually *jumps* over it. This was very helpful.

    All this time, I thought "over the center if the horse's gravity" meant in front of, and not on top of the horse's gravity. Thank you so much, I now know where you are supposed to be

    At my barn, I'm not going to be able to jump for a long time. The reason why is beacuse my instructor likes to take it slow and easy, and make sure I complete my sitting trot on all the horses. Also because most of the 'bumpy' gaited horses there, are the only ones that can jump. But your videos help my a lot, even though I'm not physically jumping, yet, you still help me understand a lot of things. I love watching your videos, your like my inspiration! :)

    @hanaandwillow Haha, that's a good question! I think everyone has to deal with stubborn horses at some point. And Noah hasn't always been as good as you might think ;) Have you watched the vid I have posted about crossing water? You can see him misbehave and a brief correction on my part.
    When I get home in October, I will definitely make a video on how to encourage your horse to behave. In the meantime, I'll also try to write an article about in on my website. Thanks for your comments!

    Very very useful video Thanks! Could you answer me a question? When I jump, I sit on the saddle until the hands of the horse touch the ground. This in uncomfortable for him and he starts bouncing. I sit until that moment because I don't keep my suspension during the jump. How can avoid that my gravity centre goes backwards? Sorry for my bad english. Hope you can help me.

    dragged down. You might want to consider riding her with a crop so that when she does pull you can give her a light tap to tell her "That's not allowed." Another option is that every time she pulls, you stop her and ask her to back up a few steps. You can also grab one rein in both hands to better resist her pull, or even turn her head to the side when she tries to pull. The whole trick is to let her know that pulling isn't okay.

    @AmbzLPayne22 That's a tricky one to fix as well. I've got a blog entry on a few things to try on my website (look up "bad bridle behavior"). Making sure he's not in pain is always the first step. But if it's just rude behavior, you're going to have to find an effective way of countering it. And that will depend a lot on his personality and reactions. I'd recommend finding a good trainer to work with you and him on the ground.

    If you're afraid you're going to fall off as you approach the jump, your body tell your horse that you're afraid, and he thinks you're afraid of the jump. So he's not going to want to go over it! I would go back down to ground poles until you get your confidence up. Only when you can ride up to and over the ground poles with confidence should you go on to crossrails and bigger jumps.

    @Claire18Hi Hi, i have jumped a few years and come across the same problem. right before he is about the resist the jump, give him a click or kiss sound to get his attention and dont kick but give him a firm nudge with your boot:)

  • @aokamins11
    @aokamins11  12 років тому

    My suggestion would be to start with a good trainer. Nothing can replace the advice of a coach who's watching you ride, and it's much safer to have someone around to help you. I'll also try to get some more jumping videos up ;)

    Well, jumping with your arms out to the side is a good way to practice getting that feeling down. If you have a trainer, I would have her/him yell "Shoulders back!" a stride out from the jump. If you are aware of the problem, it's just a matter of practicing it until you can do it unconsciously. Also, make sure you're not getting ahead of the horse, as this can contribute to poor shoulder form. Lastly, try riding around the flat with a whip behind your back, tucked into each elbow.

    Hi, I suppose it has been improving, but sometimes I hunch my back on the landing of the jump. I like my equitation other than that, and although it is getting better, it still happens. I know it is from my shoulders coming forward (It is totally fixed if, say, I jump with my arms out to the side, because it forces my shoulders back.) Any suggestions on how to fix that shoulder hunch?

  • @aokamins11
    @aokamins11  12 років тому

    It seems odd that you would BOTH come too far forward over the horse's neck AND need to work on your release, unless you are leaving your hands in your lap! Maybe you mean that you need to work on moving your hands but not your body up the horse's neck? In which case, I would recommend a neck strap, so you have a firm place to put your hands each time, and then you can work on keeping your shoulders back without worrying about your release. Practice over crossrails until you're comfortable.

    Hi Ali,
    I've been riding for about 10 years and I'm 14, but due to me not owning my own horse, I haven't got much jumping experience. When I go to jumping clinics or lessons, I always find myself become quite nervous even though I know exactly how to jump, especially if it is in front of other people.
    Is there any way of me getting as confident as I am on the flat?
    Ps: I love your videos they are really fun to watch :)

    @AmbzLPayne22 I have to agree with freyarolla. A horse that rears is very dangerous. You should have a professional trainer work with him until he stops this behavior.

    I have question
    Is it necessary to go to competition before starting jumping

  • @inkii28
    @inkii28 11 років тому

    I have a question: When I jump my leasing horse i always feel like i do not give my hands enough forward. The horse i ride does'nt stretch itself over the jump. So always when i give my hand more forward my trainer gets upset and says "don't throw yourself forward!" My hand is always flexible but i think its not enough forward. I will compete next weekend in a 80cm class and i am afraid that they will rate my jumping style as bad and that would be so embarrasing... Can you help me?

  • @aokamins11

    @horselover99100 Your horse has unfortunately learned a bad habit, which you'll have to teach out of her. She may be yanking you down because you pull on her mouth earlier when you shouldn't, so you should have your instructor make sure that you aren't doing that. Once you are sure you're not, you'll have to let your horse know that it's not okay to pull on the reins. Since you know she does it as you try to sit up, be prepared for it--drop your heels way down and sit up so you don't get (CONT)

      I know this was seven years ago but if your still struggling with this here is a tip - if the horse knows he can't jump it he will refuse so make sure your not going too fast or too slow also you need to gather the horses legs underneath it so this by holdin them up not pulling them in the mouth exactly but by havin a pressure on the bit then before the jump release them and if they need it use leg or stick hope this helped ❤❤
