  • An interesting documentary on the way of the geisha:
A young woman from Northern Japan has decided to quit school and move to Gion, the geisha quarter of Kyoto. There she wants to fulfill her dream of becoming a Geisha, called Geiko in Kyoto.
First she has to go through a trial period of several months and only after passing an exam is she formally accepted as a Maiko, an apprentice Geisha.

I couldn't for the life of me stop crying in the end. I'm truly happy for her that she was able to follow her dream. I hope they do a follow up doc of her being a full geisha. And I hope her sister was able to find a purpose in life. I have 3 sisters and know how easy it is to get jealous of the others success especially if there is constant praising and criticism going on.

There are many Japanese sources about the news in Kyoto Hanamachi(about misedashi, new shikomi spotted or new minarai, erikae or hiki iwai). She was quite famous so everyone got a complete shock when we heard that she's going to retire back then.

I have often seen this happen. They go so far as a few years after their Erikae and quit. The world is changing, and because the girls retire from such a strict profession, the Flower and Willow world is dying. However, there are those Geiko whom have remained since.

It's always hard to tell, even with Maiko and Geiko, after they retire unless they pop up later by their own choice, it's hard to tell what happened to them so tracking how family members are doing is difficult if not impossible (It's rude to try and dig into people's personal/private lives as well so we couldn't know what's going on unless they wanted to announce it themselves) If you're talking about her okiya mother and official older sister, last I heard they're doing alright, Kikuno-san (Her onee-san) retired a few years ago (Late 2017) to get married and the Okaa-san is still running the okiya.
