- An interesting documentary on the way of the geisha:
A young woman from Northern Japan has decided to quit school and move to Gion, the geisha quarter of Kyoto. There she wants to fulfill her dream of becoming a Geisha, called Geiko in Kyoto.
First she has to go through a trial period of several months and only after passing an exam is she formally accepted as an apprentice Geisha, called Maiko. - Фільми й анімація
The older sister . . . .
omfg SO MUCH 2005
I feel bad for the actual older sister. I have heard of siblings and how one is successful in this or this or this, while the other gets pushed into the background. Eventually, the Background Sibling would usually end up not talking anymore to the rest of their brothers or sisters or their parents because they get tired of having the Successful One constantly rubbed in their face, whether on purpose, passive-aggressively, or by accident.
this happened with my cousin, she went to community college while her sister got accepted to a good college ,then when she graduated ,got a very good job and thats all everyone talked about...my cousin ended up becoming a mute and stayed in her room all day,no one really knows whats up with her anymore and i wish i could talk to her but she lives far and doesnt give out her number.
I don't have the knees for a culture like this.
She has a very mature way of thinking for someone so young; she seems to fit in well with the Geisha way of life.
heck taking my heels off after a night out is hard enough can't imagine dealing with a whole kimono. Personally I lack the patience to do what these girls do. It seems like really hard work and requires a lot of dedication. Kudos to them!
I'm like the sister. I'm 24 and still haven't found what I want to do yet.
Sometimes destiny takes time. Don't worry, you're heart will guide you when the time is right.
So what happened
I am like yukina, I am trying to become a geisha.
Being a geisha seems far more pleasant now than in the past, but my goodness it's still terribly hard work! I could never do it.
They're still not allowed to have boyfriends. If a Geisha wishes to marry, she must retire. No working Geisha is allowed to have a love life.
Well at 5:36, they start talking about boyfriends, and the girl is saying that it's rare for them to have a boyfriend because they work so hard and don't have time, and then goes on to say that if you're passionate about that stuff, that you'll never survive in this business.
She never says they're not allowed to have boyfriends, or that they're not allowed to have a love life. She says this starting at 5:36.
Misato seems like kind of mean. There's no competition between her and Yukina. Yukina has just always had a dream and is following it. I think Misa's just frustrated cos she hasn't found her dream. She kind of feel like her little sister one upped her. I'd be proud of Yukina if she was my little sis. Maybe Misato could model since she seems to like makeup and fashionable clothes.
This sorta seems to be the culture. Either that, or it’s the sibling pecking order, that is, the eldest sibling or older siblings get held up as examples of what to do or not for the younger ones. Take my eldest uncle: started his own company. It’s still around and his middle child has taken over most of the day-to-day running of it. If our family had been any different, my mom and her siblings (my grandparents had 7 children) would’ve heard some variation of ‘Why can’t you be more like brother?’ growing up.
It's nice seeing that Yukina could develop a good relationship with her new onee-san. It's sad that the relationship with her own blood onee-san has deteriorated. But what does she expect? She quit college while her younger sister is in Kyoto under vigorous training and all she's doing is buying more mascara. Yukina will become a geisha, an artist. What will she do?
Unless they are born in okiya, these girls commonly go to school until 15 and then join okiya. So you can still become a Geisha if you want. You don't need to have any money to start with. Your okasan will pay for everything. When you finish your training and become a Maiko, that's when you have to start paying back. But it'll take years before you can start earning money for yourself, so it requires lots of dedication and commitment.
I wonder what happened to Misato, Yukina’s sister? Did she ever decide to try college again? And did she and Yukina talk again? It doesn’t sound like they’re not on speaking terms, but if Misato’s jealous and feels like she lacks ambition or direction in her own life, well…?
Hope the older sister figured out her path. She’s very pretty. Some people are like that. Some know what they want out of life and others don’t
I have always found they're culture fascinating... every thing about geisha is so graceful and beautiful....
It all looked pretty chill until the narrator says " it's 2 AM"
Kikuyu san had her erikae (became a fully fledged geiko) on 22nd December 2009.
UNFORTUNATELY she left the profession in December 2012
any reason as to why she left?
I did some research and apparently she quit to get married 🙂
Are you a Kikumaru fanatic? I'm a Kikutsuru fanatic LoL
I came from the Future and i wanna know how is her Life as wife going? How old is she nowadays?
Incredible story. I cannot imagine such a self-sacrificing and demanding way of life.
why I can't become a Maiko:
-kneeling on hard floors
-not being able to wash my hair everyday
-thick white makeup makes my pimples worse
-no boyfriend or lover allowed
-starving at luxurious banquets and events
-always entertaining old men
-being forced to drink alcohol
-learning the difficult Kyoto Accent
-almost no contact to my family😗
I mean i agree........ except for the "always old men" part. Most of the men are actually in there 30s or 40s even late 20s, i dont think 40 is condsidered old.
I don't wash my hair everyday, I'm a lesbian,
"Almost no contact to my family" id join for that lol. The only problem is the hairstyle would probably trigger my severe migraines.
1. You learn special arts and skills. 2. You meet high class rich people and celebrities. 3. You get to wear clothing most people would never even touch. 4. You get to eat at the best places. 5. It's likely that customers will start fawning over how pretty you are. There are some positives. x3
I don't know why I laughed so much when her sister is buying make-up and Robbie Williams is playing in the background. :')
In the wareshinobu hairstyle the two red pieces (which are tubes of red silk slightly stuffed) are called kanoko. In the ofuku style the traingular piece (which can be blue, green, purple, white, pink, red and white, or green) is called a tegara kanoko. In the katsuyama style (the one worn in July) it's a ro kanoko which is only either red and white (sometimes silver) or pink. For yakko shimada it's a ro kanoko of all different colors. For sakko it is only a red, no white or silver, silk ribbon.
Exactly what I was thinking! She seems to love the stuff from that short clip we saw of her.
D'awww, her big sister is so kind to her.
I think it would be a great experience to go to Kyoto and meet the maikos and geisha! I would also be cool to actually experience the training, but I don't know if I could do it for a long time. Still this culture is so interesting to me:)
Oh my goodness, all those layers, all that fabric- I'm sweating just looking at her!
She is really beautiful. She looks like a living doll.
I was doing the math, and Yukina debuted in 2005, she will have her Eri-kae somtime this year in 2010! Congrats Yukina!
every time i see see those flutters i can't help but say 'bira bira!'
The ofuku tegara (piece of red and white cloth [yes you were right]) changes colors. However, I have seen senior maiko in their fourth years wearing the red and white, so it may simply depend on their preferences. There are blue, green, purple, white, pink, and red and white tegara cloths. It's a triangular piece with two strings on the outer corners that is tied around the base of the maegami (bun), the top corner has a small, short pin that does not touch the scapl but holds it in place.
Oh that's interesting. Thanks for your reply.
The kimono and jewelry the girl around 3:00 is wearing is so pretty
Sweet! ^_^
Happy to hear other people like it too lol.
Not a lot of people do near me :(
Kikuno is sooooooooooooo beautiful!
I'm going to be honest, it's horrifying the way these girls are being taught to look at eating and their bodies. All of the girls who don't eat even though they've been working for hours, and how they're so worried about their weight all the time. It's just not a very healthy way of looking at things.
That hairstyle is just a bun that is pulled up and a decorative net is tied around it to keep the frays from flying.
She's straightening it. It's a special type of flat iron that as they go down the hair strands it creates volume to help keep the hair in its shape.
@thesecretpathoflife so how will the sensei find me unless i go to them first? i want to try it.
She's most certainly a maiko, she has long sleves and a red collar. Not sure about who should be the Onee-san traditionally though, perhaps the maiko's must helps with some training because there are so few Geisha to go around?
What are those metal things clanking when they're getting their hair done at 1:58.
To those who responded with the comments below - yes, I know this is how they communicate with their clients. I am not stupid. I just find it incongruous as they represent a very traditional aspect of Japanese culture. I'm not saying they shouldn't have a mobile phone!!!! Thank you to everyone who understood my meaning and "liked" my comment :-)
I feel bad for the big sister geisha she’s always worried about her weight and what she eats. Almost sounds like she’s developed a bit of an eating disorder 😕 I hate to see it because she’s beautiful and thin
Yukinas maiko sister is so pretty!!
In some districts Oneesan may still be maiko, but the earliest they are allowed to become Oneesan is at san nen me (third year) which is rare, but some Okiya in Gion Kobu do it, like Tama Okiya with Okami-kaasan.
@starsonmywindow it's a type of hair crimper to add volume to the hair.
there is that side of it you're right though. hard work does pay off
Yukina is SO adorable. I know I said that before but seriously! Wish I was gentle-spirited as her. xD
@blingblingshineshine me too! I was quite shocked when I found out in highschool that university was an option.
not sure with the smile of the big sister before she close the door at 8:56 haha XD
Would kill my lower back up and down all the time. But I admire the endurance and skill it rakes to perfect this art
@ewoodham
I think they may even be a little more expensive than that these days! I have a furisode magazine from when I was in Japan and the most expensive one it is was $13,000! I would think a maiko hikizuri would be even more than that, and just on average! But maybe not. And yeah, obi have so many special threads they are ridiculous in pricing almost!
They must be so hot with all those layers! I'd die. xD
I'm not an expert on this but kimono's I think are actually breathable despite the multiple layers, considering how its silk.
Yukata is another form of a the kimono but its made out of cotton and is meant for summer use.
how come they allways seem to knee to open the door do they do that to enter the house aswell?
going in and out of doors looks like a hassle.
@thesecretpathoflife where do i go to learn koryu?
Love Yukina's Donald Duck pajamas.
@LOGOMag That could also be contact lens ...
aww her pajamas are so cute!! :)
I wonder what sort of fabric the obi is made from...
@MalonEisaiMalakas what would annoy me the most is those pillows they have to sleep on would really hurt my neck. (I can barely stand the sink when I get my hair done). and I am not sure I could rember all the dance moves (I can be very forgetful.
The subtitles were wrong, but oh well XD I guess you can't always get a good translator.
It's actually a band of cloth that's tied in w/ the hair style, not a ball. I can see how it can look red and green, though I believe from what I've researched, it's actually a red and white pattern. Don't quote me on that, though. Maiko have different colored ones depending on what stage of training they're at. From the looks of it Kikuno is still a junior maiko, probably around 17. She is now a geiko, as is Kikuyo. The band and hairstyle change around 18 to one with a red band.
Does anyone know what that little metal tool was that they used on her hair? I know that i sound dumb, but I'm not sure what it is. thanks...
Not everyone gets to even see the inside. Sometimes during their days off where they are not working at all, they may go and eat at those places too. It just depends on how much they have saved up.
@xShadowxPhoenix They can, but the more likely case is that they make sure not to drink, because it's a pain to go to the bathroom when you're wearing the full geisha ensemble.
geisha are really strong and independent women! I admire them
Oh, I see what you mean.
But it's mostly shikomi that are (sometimes, probably depending on the okiya) forbidden to use cellphones, not maiko I think, and certainly not geiko.
A cellphone would be handy to communicate with the okiya or ochaya in case of changes or trouble, and in any case I remember seeing other pictures of geiko and maiko using cellphones (and a documentary where a shikomi said she wasn't allowed to).
@MalonEisaiMalakas Japanese bow quite a lot, so I think they're pretty used to it. XD
I think Misato would become a beautiful model.
why do i feel lonely watching this? Yukina run away!!
eyeroll @ them spelling it "saki"
Yeah, it's around there... that's incredibly expensive
this world always makes me interested :)
@literaturechick12 I agree its sad the lose culture sometimes. (however there are some things I am glad that are gone like the mituzuage).
Why do they have to kneel before opening and closing the door?
Does anyone know the name or how to do Yukina's hairstyle in 1:18?
It's like memoirs of a geisha movie where the big "sister" was jealous of the little "sister" even though they weren't actually related in that movie...sort of similar.
Why do they have to kneel down each time they open the sliding door? It seems so inconvenient. Can't they just bend and open it?
why do they hav to kneel down everytime they open or close those sliding doors? Formality? i don't see any practical reasons, unless it helps them make a habit of doing so when in actual formal circumstances.
"please bring my mobile phone" modern geisha!
Questioned..(Raises hand) what is the hair peice that maikos wear with the dangley metal bits?
I'd hate to open doors like that..
@attackofdameepits thanks so much i found some on ebay but I dont think they are that authentic. so thanks a bunch.
@tineeeable - I agree with you, there are many negatives but overall being a geisha is a positive thing, there would be no geisha at all if it was overall negative
the one thing that stood out to me was the younger girl had to get on her knees to open and close the door even though she's going to be back on her knees a few feet away a second later, that has got to be tiring!
That's good manners in Japan. Especially as a maiko in training, she would be scolded if she didn't.
From a practical point of view, the door is less likely to slide off this way, as the direction of the force you apply to it doesn't tend to lift it off.
How can she bare bowing down to open the sliding door every-time she goes through? I would be like, screw this I'm just walking through.
@WillyyyV My impression was that technically, while the geisha do live in the geisha house, they do eventually earn a portion of their own income and they are allowed to date (and in extension, have sex, as a personal matter-not as part of their work). The issue of dating seems to revolve around lack of time, as they are always training and working.
Well, i've read that most geishas tend to retire around the ages of 20-22. by 2012 she would have pretty much reach that age.
why does she have to be on her knees to open and close the door?
msprittstick how do you know she dosen't have alot of the same shirt???don't judge
Liza Dalby, she wrote a book about it entitled Geisha that's worth reading.
How else will they communicate with clients? Carrier Pigeons?
hard life.. O.O
It's kinda crazy how she had to kneel down, open the door, then rise and walk out, instead of just open the door and step out
Yes you wouldnt understand
Baba-chan is one of the other women who helps around the okiya. She's the one that takes Yukina on her rounds during her Misedashi. She helps cook meals sometimes in the house too from what I found.
The woman(onagoshi) who took Yukina around during the misedashi is the okaasan of Ishihatsu.
Every geisha have a mobile, it isn t become they have an "old job" that they don t nead one like everyone. For example, they use it to communicate with the okiya for the new appointments and lots of other stuffs.
Actually traditional finishing schools are like this, though they're almost near extinct. The most famous one is in Austria I think.
the parties and environment change dramtically for a geisha house .. dont you think ?
what is the woman doing to the poor girls hair ??
its thin enough but she just keeps crimping on it ???!
@misslizzy1993 no they do not do that when they open the door to the house. 0.0
To get good extensions and/or weave for my hair can go upwards to 5k....yeah it is possible.
