07:01 What are Little Golden Books?
13:32 What are Funko Pops?
26:53 Do kids even need to be taught "opposites?"
32:23 This bites.
nobody cares how many times you cried
me to my cat when he wanted breakfast 2 hours before my alarm went off
Me to elon musk:
nobody cares what you think
Pin of shame!
have printed this out and attached it to my bathroom mirror as a daily affirmation, thank you Toni Maroni.
The ending of I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream is Ted being turned into a Funko Pop.
“one thing’s for sure: barbies are way better than funko pops” i’m choosing to take this as the only lesson of this essay thank you
also squishmallows! better than squishmallows!
As someone who also watched Jaws for the first time this year, one of my biggest takeaways was this: the people in the movie looked like regular people, and I can't remember the last time I saw a big-budget Hollywood film where that was true.
Lola, it is so satisfying every single time you say "thank you" after "viewers like you"; every time a youtuber or media is like "this work is supported by viewers like you" and just ends it there, my lil PBS kid heart breaks a lil and IT FEELS SO INCOMPLETE
as someone who knows that having fun isn't hard when you've got a library card, my life is dedicated to the former PBS kids. and viewers like you. thank you.
The bite of 87?
I collected poorly-conceived, weird, or poorly-aged children's books that came into our used bookstore and would've been all over this. Thank you for unpacking this one in detail
I hope you talk about fanfiction during this series because the entire trajectory of my life was changed in 2007 when I stumbled on a Hooper/Quint story that, no joke, inspired me to start writing
this is the best comment i’ve ever received no joke
Don’t be shy drop the title (or identifying features)
REAL those two completely altered my brain chemistry
“My Gen-X dad…”
“Watching Lindsay Ellis since I was 11…”
Make me feel old then twist the knife, why don’t you?😢
😂❤
Hearing the crew talking about the animatronic malfunctioning and how they mistreated it and put it through so much abuse and couldn't get it to work made me imagine it getting legs and going all Gyo on the crew members as revenge for its maltreatment.
As someone with an irrational phobia of cgi extinct marine reptiles, I found this first installment of this Jaws series deeply relatable. I quake hard seeing sea monsters swim across my screen. I think I'd literally burst into sobs if I went to a Universal theme park and they had an animatronic mosasaur... Godspeed on your journey to see Bruce, Lola 😭
There is a CGI mosasaur on the Jurassic World ride
@@ajzeg01 CGI? Damn no fun pictures posing like she's eating my head then? :(
the insulindian phasmid scene from disco elysium is so beautiful it makes me bawl every time i think abt it, so it took me like five minutes to realize why i was getting so emotional over a video abt jaws until i heard the phasmid's theme in the background 😭😭 emotional jumpscare /hj
also ive listened to all ur essays probably at least 3 times each, i love your content so much! listening to ur essays in the background makes cleaning my house something i always look forward to :))
A 44-minute video essay about a Jaws children book adaptation wasn't on my bucket list of videos, but the mere concept itself has hooked me instantly.
Yesss, animated Barbie movies mention
I know of Princess & the Pauper’s reputation and know it’s deserved, but I grew up with Nutcracker and Swan Lake and kept some tabs on the other animated Barbie movies. I told literally everyone who also so Gerwig’s Barbie movie that if Dua Lipa and John Cena got to be mermaids then they missed the opportunity to have a Barbie fairy or even a small Bibble cameo because more animal/ fantasy creature sidekicks
i wish i would’ve seen this video when it was initially posted omg.. i work at the library and i have shelved this book MULTIPLE times, like enough for me to remember sitting and thinking “who even wants a kids book about jaws”? i’m so glad you got to the bottom of this lola.
Lemon Demon intro? Immediately the best video I've ever watched
i know it's cool to hate funko pops, but i still love certain ones. my giant ursula and treehouse of horror collection brings me such joy in particular.
I got some of the dont starve ones because those characters already don’t have pupils and have oversized cartoon heads so they didn’t look that different.
Thank you for braving these dangerous waters for us 🙏
❤️ ily!!!
My school's production of Little Shop of Horrors was our school's Jaws. The giant Audrey 2 puppet was a mess and in peices until the last few rehearsals, it was a pain to move, and it was overall and inconvenience. Shit was going wrong left and right. From missing scripts and malfunctioning costumes, to our whole curtain falling down onw day before opening night. Almost everyone was exhausted and annoyed but in the end it has been one of our most successful shows. Almost all the preformances were sold out and the audience loved it. I am so incredibly greatful that I was a part of that show. It might have been a trainwreck but it was our trainwreck.
Ok I haven’t finished this video but I sincerely hope you touch on the fandom in the future videos. There’s a very small niche on tumblr that I personally am a part of, but we’re maybe 1% max of the entire picture. Every time I look for Jaws content outside of tumblr it’s a genuine culture shock because of just how DIFFERENT everything is (surprisingly, a bunch of 50+ year olds do not have the same interpretations and methods of engaging as a half dozen 17-25 year old tumblr users…). There’s podcasts, a daily news website, and someone is writing a FAN PREQUEL NOVEL that’s getting published soon. I feel like I could spend months just exploring weird Jaws fans stuff and still have no good idea of the bigger picture. I don’t know how to explain it, but I feel like the wider Jaws fandom is so special cause most people like… don’t know they’re participating in fandom? They don’t call themselves fan groups, they don’t write fanfiction, cosplay is rare, etc. I think it comes down to Jaws not being something “nerdy” like Star Wars or Star Trek, so the people who are drawn to it are less likely to acknowledge/recognize the fact that they’re in a little nerd fan group, essentially. But idk. I’m just very excited to see someone making a video about Jaws!!!
Sidenote: Those funko pops always irritate me so much cause aside from, well, being funko pops… they made Hooper’s hair red? Which is a weirdly prevalent thing in merchandise, and I almost wonder if it comes back to other companies looking at the funko pops as design inspiration? The carnival plushies from Universal Studios come to mind. I’ve done an unnecessarily deep dive into Richard Dreyfuss’ hair color and I kinda understand how they thought it was red (his hair was dyed a warm brown because he had essentially fully greyed already, and I’d assume it faded leaving the lighter silver hair stained a very warm auburn color) but it still upsets me a lot 😭
Anyways! I’m matthoopergay on tumblr if anybody has any questions or just wants to hear me be bizarre about Jaws for a while. Love doing it!
Can't wait for part 2! here is my pro-shark stance: I started to love sharks when I was learning about them and could sympathize with how their public perception paints them. I was diagnosed with autism before I was 10 and my parents' only exposure to the concept of autism was the film Rain Man. There's also some things I connect with Sharks & Autism, like having a "dead stare" and heightened sensory experiences (ever had a smell alter your mood?) and limited mobility is another one. There are many species and sub-species of sharks, and lots to learn about them so I get a bit sad sometimes when the first thing people think when they hear Shark is Big rows of teeth and blood and gore and guts. in my mind when i think shark I think of nurse sharks and their little :3 mouths and mustache, but that took time and effort on my part that I don't think many people are willing to extend to things they are already afraid of. I also think it goes without saying that the amount of sharks killed by humans vastly outweight people killed by sharks. I am 100% a shark lover and fin-soup hater. And here's a cute fact: some shark eggs are called Mermaid Purses.
I did not know that fear of machinery in water was a thing. I mean, it makes total sense, but I *love* ferries and boats and dark rides. I’m always fascinated by what people find terrifying in the “sends you into a blind panic, makes you cry” level of fear. It’s heights for me. But, I really like researching why we have phobias. Also, side note, I actually find Funko Pops charming.
It's interesting because it makes 100% sense why it would be an extreme fear, but it doesn't make sense how it can be such a basic instinctual feeling one (at least to me). Maybe it's just an extension of a natural caution around water? Because machinery on land is also incredibly dangerous but I don't see the kind of fear around it as machinery under water. The idea of getting caught up in gears you didn't see is terrifying but I guess the whole assembly being outside the natural environment of humanity pushes it over the edge
Jacob Geller has good essays on here about fears (depths, cold, big thing underwater) if you haven't seen them.
I also love boats and ships, just being on the water. But you're not going to catch me in the water because it's a nightmare realm that monsters dwell in.
I mean, learning about aquatic animals is infinitely interesting, but I'm glad that they're there and not here.
and we are freezing but now I remember we are out here @@Sandwhaler
@@Sandwhaler Thanks for the rec! Yeah, the deep down dark of the ocean can be pretty scary, but it is also way cool.
JAWS IS HERE
AND Caroline Polachek at the end?? You have great taste
I only recently learned that part of the reason Funko Pops use the same cookie-cutter expression is so that they only have to license the _characters_ from live-action works, which are typically owned by studios, without having to separately license the likenesses of the actors that portrayed those characters.
As usual, the real villain was Capitalism all along! 🎉
dang playing at the end continues to be a genius decision
Watched this first on Nebula, I grew up with scary picture books like Turramulli the Giant Quinkin which was illustrated as a terrifying Dreamtime story from Aboriginal Australia that is out of print these days, I was so terrified of Turramulli that I wrote messages on the bunk bed planks above me to ward him off. This Jaws book has all the dangerous edges sanded off for safe Funko pop branding, I saw ET and Jaws as a double bill with my mother at the Chavel Cinema in Sydney once and I was impressed by both in theatrical presentation. I am proud to pay eight dollars a month for Nebula to watch stuff like this.
Holy crap someone else who grew up with the Dick Roughsey and Percy Trecize picture books? I read Turramulli till it was dogeared, it and The Quinkans were one of those "scary but you can't look away" type books for me. The Quinkans made the Imjin look terrifying, and then Turramulli was a figure that was so scary even the Imjin Quinkans ran in fear of him. They were wonderful, if scary. Books!
All this shark talk is really putting me in the mood to watch Mythbusters shark week specials. Can't be the only one haha
1. Fantastic video, thank you!
2. I have the Little Golden Books for all the Star Wars movies. The way they dance around the dark parts is remarkable. Here's the part where Anakin kills the sand people: "He finds [his mom] just in time to say good-bye. Anakin feels rage and hate growing inside him -- and that is not the way of the Jedi." Why even try to tell this story with such limitations? (Though I should add that the Attack of the Clones Little Golden Book has the best art of all of them.)
3. Are there music credits somewhere? I looked around but I might have missed them😅
4. I also love Princess and the Pauper! Amy Powers' lyrics are so clever and inspiring, and Martin Short is iconic. I disliked the recent Barbie movie too, for a lot of reasons, and I wish it wasn't seen as sexist to criticize it.
🦈
Unable to listen to Dang now without picturing the closing shark attack montage. I think that might be what that song was made for
my dad bought me this for my graduation from middle school lol. also the lemon demon song is EXTREMELY based and the main reason my dad bought the book for me, i played it for him a while ago and he loved it
i watched jaws in the cemetery where the shark attack victim that inspired the book resides. the 1916 jersey shore attacks were the first real attack on public opinion about sharks, predating the novel by 60 years. it'd be nice to see a history of, but i'm down for whatever this series gives me.
lola barbie princess and the pauper is my Favorite barbie movie to the point that i teared up when i saw all the merch and you played the clip from Free
Currently in a children's literature and YA class and we have talked more than once about the phenomenon that picture books are often made to appeal to the parents more than the kids. That's my guess as to why Jaws and Spock Little Golden Books exist. I'll also add that in the current western world we should always keep in mind that children's literature is heavily marketing based from the moment we switched from moms making a book or two for their kids, to mass marketing them to a wide audience.
I love how you talked about the issues with teaching children binary opposites
As an educator who works with preschoolers I am always on the lookout for books that teach concepts. Very few actually give good examples. Especially ones tied in to IP.
Watched this on Nebula and couldnt wait to comment! I didn't know the term for submechanophobia and I'm happy to finally have a word to explain the HORROR I have felt since I was a kid. My dad watched this film when it came out with his mum in the cinema - he was underage and terrified, but grandma wanted to see it and had no one else to take. I watched it for the first time with him (funny how these things repeat themselves) and he recounted the cheers of the audience when the shark was caught, and everyone thought it looked so real. It remains his favourite film to this day, and the fact that the machine kept malfunctioning always makes him chuckle. Back then the reality of the shark was scary, today its clear automation is what makes it all the more terrifying to me! Loved this one, and all your videos, Lola!
Commenting late for engagement because this video was hidden from my feed and I only found it by searching for your channel
It's so funny cause I thought Jaws was the cutest thing ever. Even when we went on the ride when I was a kid I'd just go "awwwwww"
did you watch the film?
Totally agree that opposites are a bit facile! I was in a class in Japan once where the instructor was playing a 'match the opposites' game and was totally flummoxed by all the Americans saying that the opposite of water was fire- I think of that often when facing down black-and-white thinking.
Also the LGB joke was adorable lol
Amazing work as always. Never thought I'd be so absorbed in a video essay about such a random piece of pop culture tie-in merchandise. I'm excited to see more of this series in the future!
Wait, Lindsay Ellis is back? That's great to hear, I was worried after she left the platform
Great video so far! I have a deep love for sharks, but I do recognize that most view them as terrifying monsters. Even though there are hundreds of species many of which are very cute like the Eppaulette shark
I just looked up a picture and it's adorable, I can see why it's called shoulder pad shark
@@kjarakravik4837 They really are! the videos of them walking on their fins are so cute!
The worst nightmare I ever had ended with me bitten in half by an animatronic shark and sinking to the bottom of the ocean. At least I can confirm that you don't in fact 'die for real' if you die in your dreams.
I always come back for the ending music video
jaws is one of my favorite movies and sharks are my favorite animal! needed this video today!!
The new Jaws Ravensburger board game is somehow both an excellent game and homage to the film. 😅 Might want to look it up if you haven't already. (It's not Funko).
I love how the singular funko pop you seem to have is Soichi.
Edit @37:13
Lol
There's a Bob's Burgers episode about an animatronic shark. It's great.
Peter Benchley wrote another Shark book (technically n*zi half man/Shark book) White Shark.
There’s a character that said “boys love two things dinosaurs and sharks” and that has stuck with me ever since.
excellent work as always! looking forward to the next video
And Caroline at the end! so good
4:40 I love the use of the Insulindian Phasmid’s theme as a background track!
I played Disco Elysium for the first time recently and coming back to this video hearing Sea Power’s music was super exciting
your credits music never fails
I was NOT expecting a Barbie Princess and the Pauper reference but I am so glad to see it. Preminger analysis video WHEN?
Lola i am obsessed with this video
Very excited for what awaits on this Jawdyssey, Funko Pop Children's Book Adaptation was already a lot to swallow but very fun! Also can someone tell me the background music that starts around 37:54 ? I swear I’ve heard it in a video game somewhere!
Only one time on a visit to Universal Orlando did the Jaws ride actually work for me. Every other time it was shut down completely. That ride was even more cursed than the movie.
Also, in Florida it should be "don't touch the Tower of Terror" and "please, for the love of Walt, do something about Space Mountain".
Stern Pinball released Jaws featuring the voice of Richard Dreyfus in early 2024.
As a playlist enjoyer i luuuv the music playlists lately. White Foxes is my top track of the year now and we enjoy a lot of the same artists like Caroline Polachek. Also you convinced me to finally get a nebula subscription!!!
i'm so glad the playlists are being enjoyed!! they were long requested so I'll try my best to keep them coming.
I totally feel you on the extreme fear of animatronics, particularly underwater animatronics. I would have been less scared of Jaws if it was a real shark.
Justice for Jaws. the shark was the real victim. yes I know that's not the name.
this is both a wonderful essay on Jaws, it's built-in flaws that contribute to it's workings, and a lame children's book. to be honest, if there was some 70's golden book for the same audience but with mouths, i'd honestly love to see it.
Uh I know this is a very tiny part of your video but OMG you're a fellow BJD enthusiast as well ?!?! 😭💕💕
Im wondering what do you think of Amano Katan dolls' glass eyes 🥺
i based my art style on her dolls as a teenager 😊
@@LolaSebastian that's lovely 😭
@@LolaSebastian I had the fortune to visit Maria Cuore earlier this year and saw some of her works in person - it was great T_T
so jealous of the princess and the pauper merch oh my god
Funko Pops are so ugly to me due to how they often massacre the original designs that made me like the thing you are trying to remind me of with this soulless thing.
Also, Nenderoids look better imo if you must have a plasticy figurine based on the fandom communities I lurk in
Btw, if a post-apocalypse that relies on an absurd agreed upon currency rather than barter/ trade happens, I would rather have Barbies, mint condition baseball cards, or even someone’s appropriately posed and clothed anime best girl figurine than see a freaking Funko Pop, but there are so many of them that I think they would be kicking around well into doomsday situations 😭
As a figure collector (im mostly into Q Posket and Pop Up Parade) Funko Pops fill me with RAGE
Well, good thing the company seems to be hitting the skids as of late?
@@luthientinuviel3883 I just looked up what those are, and I like how the Q Posket looks like a properly designed chibi-I hope I am using the right term- version of the character with features scaled down to match a bigger head.
The Pop Up Parade versions of the Spy x Family Forgers is cute too as someone who got back to watching airing anime again
it's really interesting for me to hear your rationale for a fear of sharks as someone who is equally afraid of them for the exact opposite reason -- not because they seem like machines, but because they are inescapably biological. the idea of being crushed by a thoughtless, soulless machine is much less horrifying to me than the idea of being eaten by a shark -- a living thing that's warm and wet and made of meat.
Me too, Lola... 😩
Please please talk about saltburn
Ending with the new Caroline song. Oh u truly r the youtuber with best taste
I HEAR THAT PRINCESS TUTU OST IN THE BACKGROUND
I need to know what that song is
youtube for me, then nebula to watch with my partner. you rawk lola, thanks.
Watched on nebula so I wanna comment for the algorithm! Great video!
don't worry Lola, i STILL haven't seen ET either lol. i saw Jaws as a kid tho, mostly because my older sister loves horror movies. So I've seen Jaws, The Birds, Arachnophobia, and that sand worm movie.
lemon demon pog
DANG AT THE END????
Is that Aquatic Ambiance I hear???
I used to read Little Golden Books as a kid: I had no idea that they were still making them!
A...picture book based on a monster-horror thriller?
What?
The opposite of a dog is not a dog
But, it’s so cute…
In 2023, Bruce is an analogy for covid to me. XD
Thanks
Hearing Lindsay ellis voice threw me off but it was really nice
As great as the movie is, the damage it did to shark's reputation by solidifying them as mindless human eaters has pretty much doomed the sharks as a species.
My nostalgic Gen X dad also showed me this movie and interestingly I feel pretty much the opposite (haha) way about the movie that you do. I didn't find the movie itself that interesting, and since I was an environmental kid I already knew about the shark stigma Jaws caused, a fact which bothered me the entire movie. But I liked the relationship between the characters, and I honestly found the shark kind of cute and endearing, which made it hard to be truly scared (although I do sympathize with the fear of encountering a shark or machinery or pretty much anything in the ocean honestly).
omg glasses beanie lola im 😍
