I found it strange that a religion that promise sex with 72 plump breasted virgins in Jennat is less dirty than the music of Mozart, Beethoven or JS Bach and so Haram. what kind of religion is that?

Very beautiful explanation. It is very important to understand what the package of music brings with it in your particular setup. I am from Bangladesh and as a Bengali much of my childhood and present life is intertwined with the Tagore Songs. Although he was not a Muslim, but most of his songs brought me so close to Allah that nothing else ever did in my life. His songs kept me close to Allah in the darkest periods of my life. It will be completely ungrateful for me to say that songs like those can be haram. For example, I mention lyrics from some of his well-known songs -
Sample 1 - (Why we should not fear death when we are just returning to Allah)
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
If today, in the empty room, on this moonlit night,
    You come with empty hands--
    Why should I fear!
I know, my friend, I know--
    You have Your divine touch.
The days have passed while searching and striving,
Now the time has come to surrender myself to Your embrace.
Darkness lurks in every corner, the sky veiled in blindness,
Your divine presence resides in my heart.
In the ebb and flow of life, I lost myself,
Now life and death will encompass me, guided by Your divine hand.
Sample 2- (This song implies how everything we do is a manifestation of divine power)
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Within my being, in the depths of my heart, Your voice brings me liberation.
The eternal celebration, the illuminating lamp of Your universe,
I am but a clay lamp of Yours, igniting Your flame.
Endlessly radiant, guided by Your desire.
Just as in Your spring, songs are written,
In every hue, on every petal, in every forest, in every direction,
In the center of my soul, grant me a breath, a complete offering,
Filling emptiness with Your blessings, let me rejoice in melody.
Let obstacles turn into virtues, with Your skillful hand.
    Sample 3 -
    ---------------
    When life withers away,
    Come, O Compassionate One.
    When all sweetness hides,
Come, in the nectar of song.
When actions take a forceful form,
Roaring and swirling in every direction,
O Lord of Life, in the depths of my heart,
    Come, with tranquil footsteps.
In your presence, I become humble,
Lost in a corner, a soul without shelter,
Opening the doors, O Generous Lord,
    Come, ascending the throne.
When desires scatter in abundant dust,
    Blinding and wandering in ignorance,
O Holy One, O Sleepless One,
Come, in the light of Rudra.

Thank you for this. As a convert from a very musically inclined family this is a question I have always struggled with. When I hear the whole "music is haram" thing it gets me on edge a bit. However, I'm always relieved to discover that it's only certain types of music that are prohibited. Most of what I already listen to and enjoy, even before I was a Muslim, does not really seem to fit under the category of being the type of music that would be played in a nightclub or pub.

I love, that you find relief. Be careful of these ,,this is haram" people. You have to spend years / half your life to understand / teach Quran and hadith. People nowadays want to be a teaching imam / mufti without spending their life on knowledge, because of their lazyness or others things. I know an ayat, that I can´t interpret because of my lack of knowledge, but I still wanna mention it, it says (as I kind of remember): ,,Don´t say, that things are haram or halal". Something like that. I dont know quran interpretation, but it seems, that its haram to say, that something is haram (kind of) haha. I also heard (maybe from a hadith): ,,He who speaks without knowledge is considered a liar". Very terrifying, but logical. Hope I helped. Allah bless you and your family to the best degree possible ^^

    Assalam o alaykum,
With my little knowledge of music, I believe it can be broken down into 2 parts
    1) Music - From instruments
    2) Song - Lyrics
To be fair and just to any topic, we should gather all Ayat and Hadees connected to it. There are famous Hadith which bans all musical instruments except one sided drum. I agree with the scholar that if a song does not have any Shirk, immodest, vain lyrics, it is fine and could be treated as another form of poetry. But we should also consider the aspect of musical instruments in it. I am not Alim but the scholar should not have left out this critical part.
At the end of the day, We should try to find the correct answer rather than prove our opinion correct.
May Allah protect and guide us all to the right path.

Very important to provide a proper context for this kind of discussion. This should include the fact that for the most part, music and the art of practising musicianship and song is by no means damaging nor does it entail adverse behaviours. That particular criticism may be relevant to a very small minority of cases only. Please provide a balanced discussion on such topics, including inviting people with diverse views and direct experience of the topic. That will be much more helpful.

There is music that drains you and music that empowers you. There is literally instrumental music that brings you closer to the Creator and inspires the will to righteousness, as well asmusic that brings you closer to hedonism and to shirk. It is not music itself, but the genre and type you choose to listen to.
To put all sound waves, hence music, per se, in one basket, is like banning all liquids> coffee, alcohol, juices... they're all liquid but they're not all bad. Critical thinking is necessary in matters like these, as the quran often commands us. May Allah guide us all.

  • @Kryptic245

The companions unanimously agreed upon the prohibition of music and song but allowed particular exceptions specified by the authentic sunnah. many authentic narrations (aathaar) traced to the various sahaabah bear witness to this. Also, the four Khalifas, the fuqahaa among the saahabah such as Ibin Abaas, Ibin Umar, and Jaabir bin Abdullah as well as the general body of saahabah (may Allah be pleased with them all).

As Salaam Alakium. It is unbelievable that many refuse to stop conflating music with songs.......
Music alone detracts only if the listener allows. Music WITH LYRICS applied can take one from the path of Allah. There is a difference, clear and simple. And until this distinction is presented at every opportunity, this unclear, confused and distorted article of faith regarding listening to music within the deen will ALWAYS be a source of and for contention. Songs minus music instruments is acapella speech and can be questioned depending on content. Music minus lyrics is sound vibrations, not a soul-stealing entity. Allah's word in the Quran says nothing of music being harasm. Allah desires ease for us. So apply common sense when it comes to the topic of music and songs. Stop focusing on the instrument because on its own, that intangible object is powerless (unless we give it power). Music containing lyrics which are songs can be held for critique and/or outright dismissal. May Allah guide us all to the path of righteousness and common sense approaches.
    As Salaam Alakium.

One of issues nowadays which has become an area of confusion is music being played on religious videos & tv channels, nasheeds, latmiya etc
If we take what culture that music is played in or if it is played at haram gatherings it isn’t always clear it can become subjective. Especially where it is full blown music which is becoming common.
I am not talking about a mild background we have full blown music even in Islamic kids programming.
Do I want my children growing up with a taste of music being told well it isn’t played in haram gatherings. Will they always draw the right line when older even adults are confused?
I don’t think we get the hard questions answered clearly it is left to subjective opinion.
I see my kids bopping to kiddie music but can be said the programme educational. Will kiddie music be taken as bad culture or haram gathering? Probably not as it isn’t the music played in pubs & clubs etc. But kiddie can grow to like it show a preference to that over programs without

I've never understood when people have told me music as a whole is haram. It always depends on context. There are a lot of songs of worship, spirituality, love, and the human experience in general from people who are honest but just love to make music. Not to mention the recitation of the Quran even has musical qualities to it, if it didn't have those musical qualities it would sound like spoken word, and never recited the way it always is.
Everything about this world has a rhythm, the way a heart beats the way we walk, talk, laugh, the way birds sing, the way music effects how plants grow, or how water freezes. This is all a part of the creation.
The only real explanation I can see for music being haram is in the form of idol worship (when people pretty much worship famous musicians) or in the context the Sayed mentioned which is music that takes you away from righteous behavior/consciousness.

    Some music represent cultures
    Some music teach kids alot

All the imams that say music is Haram should really educate theirselves about music.... This is ridiculous. When Holy Quran came there were nor instruments or music as it is developed today. So all the hadith and the interpretations of ancient Imams are not really pointing to music that can lead you to Allah.... I see also people saying you can not call music that leads you to Allah music but Nasheed... Well my friends as a musician for 15 years I can tell you thats really a lie... And you should not lie to yourself.... To say music is haram is denying the laws of creation.
I can even tell you a kind of music makes you feel sexual harassed... if you are truely muslim and you intend to use it in a halal way you can use this for medical purposes... You should not generalize all the terms for every case.... Please go listen to music it will make you a better person.
As a muslim and professional musician and composer I really feel attacked by people who say music is haram... Will I go to hell? And if so who are you to judge that... Allah knows the best... If for you music is only about bellydancing and pathway to zina... I think your brains are poisoned and you should really ask yourself why am I thinking like this. There are even imams that say musicians have satanic rituals... I mean come on.... A fa la tefekkeroen.... A fa la tezekkeroen...
    Ya selaam... Ya selaam.

I am a Sunni..............but that does not mean ALL of SUNNI HADITH are UNCORRUPTED !
You just need ONE ORIGINAL person to interpret the Quran or the actual sayings or INTENTIONS of Muhammad slightly different
and everyone one of his students will FOLLOW through just like the BRANCH of a TREE...........
If Music is 100% Haram in both the Quran or hadith, I have no problem with that...........
But I am also terribly afraid of making something that is NEVER HARAM in first place into something that is 100% Haram !
This too is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN in Islam !
YES ! We need the hadith to know how to pray,
However, we STILL need to decide for ourselves the TECHNIQUES of pray that are the most common from those HADITH too !
But the FACT is................EVERYONE agrees that it is HARAM not to pray,
and it is even the command by Allah to pray too INSIDE the Quran !
Quran actually NEVER precisely STATE about the term MUSIC
    or
at least it NEVER STATES a CLEAR sentence FORBIDDING Muslims to play ANY musical Instrument or WHAT TYPE of Instruments !
THERE IS however a clear HADITH that say that :
Abu Bakar shouted at his daughter Aisha for listening to some girls
playing Musical instruments and singing praising songs of Islam during the EID.
He shouted at Aisha to stop listening because those DUFFS that the girls were playing are tools of the DEVIL.
Prophet Muhammad who was just beside them
told Abu Bakar that it was ok.............since it is the Muslim festival EID too by the way !
If something is TRULY FORBIDDEN and TOOL of the DEVIL,
why then did prophet Muhammad NOT warn his wife Aisha immediately about this in the FIRST PLACE ?
    According to some HADITH,
some very early scholars CLAIMED and SWORE that the term IDLE TALK in the Quran
was in fact MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS that was forbidden in the Quran.
BUT THIS IS THE MODERN ERA.............and MODERN MUSLIMS can have ACCESS to ALL HADITHS in the BLINK of an EYE too.............
Very early SCHOLARS totally DID not have this kind of ADVANTAGE about all the SAYINGS of prophet Muhammad !
So in a way, we MODERN Muslims of today are probably EVEN more KNOWLEDGABLE
than those very early scholars of HADITH. This is of course FACT !
But unfortunately, most of the traditional ULAMA of today never use BRAIN or LOGIC.
    ===========
However, I will still try my best not to listen to music though because I PREFER to PLAY IT SAFE !

My conclusion (could be different from the Sayed's) is that the nature of their interaction in this video is of a professional and educational nature; thus not necessitating a replacement for the sister. “And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead (men) from the path of Allah…” [Luqman 31:6]
The scholar of the ummah, Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: this means singing . Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: this means playing the drum (tabl). (Tafsir al-Tabari, 21/40)
Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: this ayah was revealed concerning singing and musical instruments (lit. woodwind instruments). (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 3/451)

      Assalam o alaykum,
With my little knowledge of music, I believe it can be broken down into 2 parts
      1) Music - From instruments
      2) Song - Lyrics
To be fair and just to any topic, we should gather all Ayat and Hadees connected to it. There are Hadith which bans all musical instruments except one sided drum.

I have listened to your lecture and What I have taken from it is that any music that would deviate you from the Almighty or ethical norms is Haraam other wise it is Halal.
This is what I've taken from it , this does not mean this is what you intended.
The thing that has been bothering me is that every Marja and other school of thought unanimously believe that manufacturing and Selling of any musical Instrument is haraam.
    Right.
If even manufacturing is haraam then how come the state after manufacturing i.e playing them becomes halal regardless of the intention.
This is a genuine Query I really hope you would not take this as a challenge to your understanding.
I just want to live according to the teachings of Holy Prophet p.b.u.h and his Ahlebayt a.s, and just don't want to go against any of their commands, when they are explicitly stated to refrain from the Musical Instrument.
