As a flutist who is interested and learning about Islam, I would be have a hard time understanding why instrumental music would be haram. Music does evoke emotions, but so does poetry, paintings, photography, etc. Music can definitely be used to manipulate people - especially when used with bad lyrics. Music can also be therapeutic and healing. It’s like a lot of things - when used well, it’s an incredible gift. When used for bad, it can be harmful. Side note: I stopped listening to the radio years ago for this reason.
Its so nice to hear this perspective and definitely leaves me feeling relieved. I think too many of these imams are power tripping on themselves by saying you will burn in hell and it is all haram no music, no nothing... you can't even play the piano or participate in music production. Im a revert to islam and before I reverted I had already been playing the piano for 28 years and did a degree in music production, it was and still is my career and my question to my imam was can I still make music (instrumental) and he said it is subjective, and don't worry just take your shahada. I felt unsettled but at least he wasn't one of those power tripping imams who said yes it is.. alhamdullilah, I thank Allah for this imam! I will follow his perspective.
ofcourse. and by that standard al-ghazali had no iman, neither did rumi and a bunch of other scholars. music is a debated issue, saying that ANYONE that listens to music has/had no iman is a dangerous statement.
As a pianist , i find it strange that music is Haram , Western music is mathematically pure , in the sense that A on the piano is 440 hertz , and moves up to the next octave times 2 is 880 Hertz . in between the 12 notes are devisable by mathematical ratios . Most Eastern music and tribal does not necessarily have these calculations , it can be very hard to listen to Yes there is music that is bad for you , lyrics that are disturbing , and there is angry music and there is music that is dissonant. Don't listen to it , it is bad for you . Why would Allah create something that is so pure , and pleasing to the sole . Music is inspirational , Music can calm a baby , small children will dance to it . Why would music exist in perfect harmony if it was not part of Allah's creation . .
Agree with him 100% Think about it; Saudi Arabia is the most religious country in the Islamic world. They banned pork, drinking, and adultery These things are written in the Quran multiple times. It’s crystal clear that those things at haram. There’s no clear indication that music is haram.
It's mentioned in sahih al bukhari , The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Among my ummah there will certainly be people who permit zinaa, silk, alcohol and musical instruments…” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari ta’leeqan, no. 5590; narrated as mawsool by al-Tabaraani and al-Bayhaqi. Music and music literacy is one of the 9 intelligence. It has been studied and known that music benefits the mind and improves memory and mathematics skills. Not listening to music is like getting rid of an important nutrient in your diet. Music is a mental nutrient. People have been making music since the stone ages.

Subhaan Allah. Dr Ally I Salute you! It is about time we had scholars like you who speak with wisdom and the correct understanding from the Quran. I am so glad you have clarified the verse that Allah states about vain speech. This verse IS NOT referring to music. I agree with you. Many millions of hadith lovers will disagree! Disregard them. The Ultimate Judge is Allah and not Bokhari et al. The Quran strongly condemns scriptures or hadith other than The Hadith of Allah i.e Al-Quran. Thanks once again.
Exactly. Can anyone name me one Islamic country where Musical instruments are banned from sale? There are musical instrument shops in Saudi Arabia. But the Salafis cannot handle this. Name me an Islamic country that allows Alcohol? Alcohol is clear.

@@abdulmalikmcgill6221 Here is an interesting article that analyses all the opinions regarding Music in general. islamicmusichub.com/blogs/is-music-haram-or-halal-in-islam There appear to be 3 main opinions about it, universally we can all agree that bad music that promotes haraam is haraam. However, it is dangerous to tell someone they're going to hell for simply listening to music with no intention of worshiping other than Allah or to inflate one's haraam oriented mindset with haraam lyrics. Only Allah will be the final judge for humanity. When there exists different scholarly opinions with valid reasoning (as studying Hadiths is a science in it's own right), you should respect their choice and not show a judgemental attitude. Human psychology does not work this way when people are constantly judged by people's opinions. The ummah today is disconnected from the Quran and is broken because of sectarianism and this overly judging attitude. Music is controversial in Islam as different people have different opinions, all of which are valid according to the correct methodology of reasoning, due to *contradicting* hadiths, it is important to understand context and meaning in detail, considering why different ulema have different opinions. We cannot say we're right and they're wrong because this is exactly what creates division within the Ummah. I ask you and others to consider this when giving a view point in Islam, to acknowledge the existence of other opinions and not to judge others.
@@user-rp5ix9vk8d Dear brother or sister, this article has some distortion in some sense to begin with, with all due respect. For example, It can't even give the full tafsir of the ayat in surah luqman ayah 6 properly, it only took a portion from tafsir ibn kathir. This matter was made clear in the books of tafsir, the mufasireen from the sahabas, the tabieen, and the likes that music is Haram and that the only instrument that was permitted on occasions such as weddings, eid, was the instrument called the daff. That's it. This is clearly mentioned in the Quran and it's explanation as mentioned earlier and the authentic AHadeeth regarding the matter of music being Haram in the general sense (with the exceptions like I mentioned earlier, about the daff being the only instrument that was permissible and no other instrument) is clear from multiple aunthentically reports from the companians of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). It sounds like, with all due respect fellow brother or sister in Islam, that these people who try to claim such things as permissible are doing so based off their shahawat (desires) or shubuhats (doubts). People have the tendency nowadays, even apart from music, to make certain things that are halal, Haram (which is an act of kufr), because one is changing the Legislator's (Allah) Legislation in the deen to fit their desire and this is something I seek refuge from first and foremost my dear brother or sister and I hope that every Muslim seeks refuge from it. Is there such thing as valid difference of opinion in islam? Yes, but this isn't one of them. The people want to make such matters controversial making the exception the general. For example, when it was mention the authentic AHadeeth of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about him allowing the girls to play the daff for that one day because of the occasion. The article tried to make it seem like a proof for music being permissible in this regard in a general sense where it can be played any time when there is the Quran and the other authentic AHadeeth that makes it clear that musical instruments are Haram. And when you look closer in the hadeeth you see that Abu Bakr, who was the best man on Earth after the anbiya (prophets), told them to stop doing what they were doing when he saw this, showing that it's impermissible, and he was correct in the sense that music was Haram in the general sense, but the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made it clear since it was a special occasion they can play the daff. Musical instruments is Haram in the general sense, and the only musical instrument that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) allowed was the daff on occasions like weddings and eid for example. No controversy whatsoever. If that is the case we can make a lot a controversy over so many matters in this deen. Take pork for example. We know it's Haram in the general sense. Is there a time we are allowed to eat it? If one is starving in the middle of nowhere and there isn't anything for this man or woman to eat, and this person is about to die and needs to eat and there it's nothing but pigs than this person has to eat the pig for this person to survive. And it's permissible. But I'm not going to make the exception the general. meaning I'm not going to be like old guys we can eat pork now because it's accepted in this regard therefore we are allowed to actually eat pork (in a general sense). And I can say all this was my difference of opinion, so we can have pork to eat whenever you want, just because of an exception? That would be incorrect. There is no difference of opinion in this matter. Like wise with musical instruments, in the general sense it is Haram and if you read the full tafsir from ibn kathir and others from the mufasireen it is clear from the Quran and on top of that there are authentic narrations that mentions explicitly that's musical instruments is not permissible in the strict, general sense. And there are exceptions for such as wedding and eid like mentioned in the narrations. read the link in which I posted earlier because I chose that link specifically because it is verified by scholars and they take contemporary scholars, prominent scholars, evidence from Quran and Sunnah , etc. And explains it in great detail as you can see and beautifully explained. Pretty easy to comprehend when you read their answers. And they take different valid scholarly opinions as well when there is a valid difference of opinion. Such like from the 4 madhabs or amongst contemporary scholars themselves, etc. I hope it didn't seem like I was trying to attack you in any sort of way dear brother or sister in Islam. I just wanted to clarify on points in which people often get confused on because I'm still studying as well. And you got to be careful where your sources are coming from my dear brother sister because there's others out there that can easily missguided an individual I've seen them where it's just outright wrong and which people could just see it. And there are others which are pretty slick with, and that is why it is important for all of us to seek the proper knowledge from the correct people. Anyways I hope this answer wasn't too long I hope I explained everything well. I could have said much more but I'm very tired but I'mma leave to links for you to read one of them is the one from earlier and I suggest that you read that very closely to the best of your abilities In Shaa Allah. Also I will be sending another link soon written by a student who went to the University in Makkah (Umm Al Qura), which is a big uni, regarding the issue of music. Due to several hadiths which are cotradictionary to each other, he came to this conclusion (just like the İmam above). The music that is created today is definitely not good for our soul. We cannot find peace in the Qur'an if we mix both music and Qur'an. I am absolutely sick of the elementary display of Qurans comprehension by Muslims. Quran says 'IDLE TALK', now had Allah wanted that to imply MUSIC Allah would have stated music. Did Allah run out of words? See this is the twisted juggling of Allahs verses employed by hadith worshippers. Music not haram, idle talk is to be avoided. Even Quran doesn't say haram, does it Miriam? Idle talk can be in many forms. Yes music CAN contain idle misleading lyrics but NOT ALL MUSIC only certain music. Asalaamualaikum. We are living at a time where time is ticking fast. Music can lead to addiction. With that being said, it can then be very time consuming. And then you got sports broadcasted on television which is another time consumer. And then you got soaps, movies, media, gaming platforms, paying a visit to your friends/family, time spent at work, etc. My question is, how much time do we have remaining for our Deen?

We don’t take our Deen from the Quran only. We also take it from the Sunnah, and listening to musical instruments is clearly haram according to hadiths of our Prophet ﷺ. Their is a concensus among almost every scholar and all 4 madhabs agree on this. Who are we to go against the teachings of the sahabah and the best generations and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ? Respectfully our opinion doesn’t matter. Whats Haram is Haram even if everyone is doing it, whats Halal is Halal even if no one is doing it.
Music is like the sword. In itself it is just a tool, it's usage can make it halal or haram. You may find modern music today that doesn't take you away from Allah SWT but it is rare. Classical music is a nice alternative. But whatever it may be, it must be listened to in moderation so that your heart is still in the Quran. The moment music moves you more than the Quran, beware you have crossed the boundary to the Shaytan's path.

There is a Hadith (Sahih Al-Bukhari 5590) that states: There will appear people in my ummah, who will hold adultery, silk (worn by men), alcohol and the playing of musical instruments to be permissible. I am no scholar but I feel this goes against what is being said, could someone more knowledgeable clarify if I am mistaken?
The argument is that unless stated Haraam in the Quran by God then it is allowed. Imo any Hadith that outlaws something without Quranic backing is going against God and must be disregarded. God clearly says in the Quran don’t assign things to Him for which He hasnt said. Now music isn’t outlawed in the Quran so it’s permissible. That being said, if you listen to music about fornication and generally degenerate things then that would be a different matter as they are clearly sins in the Quran.

At the time of Prophet Mohammed and time of Khikafat e Rashid different kind of musical instruments were available and in use by people other than Followers of Prophet Mohammed and Sahaba Ajmaeen. Dr. Shabbir Ali, please give any example of using those instruments by Prophet, Khulafah e Rashid and Tabaeen except Duff ? Now come to logic harmful or beneficial. Music and some musical instruments definitely gave very strong impact on mental conditions, and very effectively can deter human consciousness, determination. I am trained ( partial) musician, vocal and instrument, and I have very good experience how dangerous music can be to distract from positive active to either passive or towards negative activities in life. It is similar to drinking Alcohol, as it is mentioned in Quran, Alcohol has more negative effects than positive benefits. Allah knows best.

I am writing a book answering why Allah has prohibited certain things. As for music, it is allowed in praise of Allah. Not to deviate from Allah
You are right. In simple terms, the justification is that music drifts your heart away from thinking and glorifying the almighty.

@@abdulmalikmcgill6221 Here is an interesting article that analyses all the opinions regarding Music in general. islamicmusichub.com/blogs/is-music-haram-or-halal-in-islam
There appear to be 3 main opinions about it, universally we can all agree that bad music that promotes haraam is haraam.

Such like from the 4 madhabs or amongst contemporary scholars themselves, etc.

The argument is that unless stated Haraam in the Quran by God then it is allowed. Imo any Hadith that outlaws something without Quranic backing is going against God and must be disregarded. “Among my ummah there will certainly be people who permit zinaa, silk, alcohol and musical instruments…” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari ta’leeqan, no. 5590; narrated as mawsool by al-Tabaraani and al-Bayhaqi. See al-Silsilah al-Saheehah by al-Albaani, 91).
Please dont follow this man he is misleading our ummah
Weak hadith
@@footballwithsteve4445 it's sahih
This Hadith is saheeh however it was mistraducted from the Arabic language. The real word used in this Hadith by our prophet pbuh did not mean musical instruments. I would give you the video that teaches me about this but it’s in French
@@anastasiadariov3057 please dont mislead other people by your assumptions
If you want to listen to music then go ahead but dont misguide others
@@zubairahmed9471 why is it haram though like just think about it logically
