The Cantons crush those B&W.... I dont care what fancy amp and cables or mic should be used to make the B&W sound better. Sorry if I hurt the feelings of any B&W owner....those Cantons wipe the floor with those expensive british speakers. You might argue the bad room acoustics, but even if that was fixed, the Cantons would sound even more better. Hands down.
Something doesn't sound right with a B&Ws like a phase issue. Plus the tweeters were damaged they need proper repair. Is there any signs of drivers have been taken out? just play one channel instead of both channels compared just one channel and swapping between channels.
Hey man. You are doing an excellent job there! This is a difficult test but the bw wins in terms of separation and resolution. The cantons are cheeting a bit producing the whole image but with less each instrument separation. Still sound nice of course
From B&W I like only their most expensive top models D800, D802 and D803 speakers good, the D804 sounds ok but to screamy in the midrangen, the lower series and models sounds out of balance and missing bass or sounds not open like this CM9,. the Cantons sounds a lot better to me. I've heard also the Canton Vento 896DC on a audio show and it was one of the few speakers that sounds really good in the 999,- each price range. From the nowadays speakers Canton and focal are my favorites in the 999,- each price range.
I agree the top end on the B&Ws sounds a bit muddy sounds like the tweeters aren't working properly as I have dm602s and they sound very sparkly on the high frequency and smooth in the mids and punchy in bass
Yes you can hear a difference though what ever you are listening through, but you can't judge speakers from a UA-cam video. The were times where the B&Ws sounded smoother and the Cantons sounded a bit harsh. The were times where the B&Ws sounded hollow, like some midrange was missing. The only why to know what sounds better to your ears is to hear them in person. What sucks, at least here in the US, is that you can't walk into an audio store anymore and compare several speakers side-by-side like you could in the 70s though early 90s.

I Have heard Boston Acoustic VR3 speakers are the best speakers for the money. I know a guy who has 15,000$ speakers and prefers his VR3 speakers to them. They can be hard to find.
H - J G That is not the case.Problem is the crossover and how designer arrange the sound.I've had Paradigm studio 60v5 with small drivers, and sound was very heavy on the bass.Midrange were laid back, but no blanket efect - very analitical and organic sound at the same time.Very deep sound stage.
Both sound pretty bad. I will say that, lower end speakers are less revealing than higher end speakers. The Cantons will obviously sound better with mid fi gear. However, I would take the B&W's because I know how they would sound with the right gear.
@@vintagestereo By the way, I also have a successor for my old speakers. I use the Canton Vento 896 DC now. The speakers are awesome. They have a ceramics tweeter and don't sound as harsh as the ergo. The bass is very strong but not as deep as the rc-l. However, the ergo has it's own unique sound especially when your hear jazz and blues.
your canton vento's are also mentioned in another comment by YZFR VintageAudio....He describe that under 1000 euro/apiece the vento 896DC and the focal aria 926 are the 2 best speakers he heard. I didn't hear both of them but I trust Boudewijn Veerhuis(YZFR VintageAudio) ears.
vintage stereo you really need to get that unit. I listened to my RCLs for 25 Years now without it, a few months ago I testet them with against without the control unit. The difference is huge, the soundstage ist way more detailed and the bass es deeper than my subwoofer can play, its awesome! Greetings from Germany
B&W dislikes this video! Hahahaha Here in Canada in city so is offering this pair of Canton for 1100$ CAN.... too expensive and one Speaker has a big scratch on it... For 500-600$ I would have bought them right away. Thanks for your review vidéos!

The mic is totally in the wrong place. if you will notice the canton has the midrange on top of the tweeter while the b&w has the tweeter on top. The upper midrange and lower treble is typically more in phase when listening over the tweeter, not under the tweeter. Your mic is really low and you are above the tweeter in the canton(as its reversed mid and tweeter) and below the tweeter on the b&W. If you raise the mic above the B&W tweeter and listen again, you will notice a good difference in sound character. Has do do with phase. canton is a nice speaker and I would prefer it over the B&W myself, but this test is not fair.....this is why the B&W sounds so muffled in the upper midrange.
Hard to tell with this kind of testing recorded for youtube. With instant switching you tend to only hear contrasts in tonal balance in your room with your microphone and recorder. Only live, long term listening will reveal meaningful differences. Live with each pair for a week... then you will really know.

i had a pair of those cm9 i could not wiat till i got rid of them they have a closed in effect and a nazel sound there nice but so many better sounding speakers
bw more real live sound. canton too lively and forward highs artificially emphasised.positioning of instruments easier to determine with bw than cantons.listened with sony mdr7506 connected to a hp laptop jack.

The tweeter on both is way too bright and hurts my ears, but at least the Canton are much better balanced overall. The B&Ws have a huge suckout in the midrange like all B&Ws because their designers are idiots and think that sounds good for some reason.
It differs, it can't be a match with the same amp, it differs due to source, due to amp, due to cables and so on, I think you really need to educate yourself and listen - experience more and more in order you to submit these kind of videos, you are misdirecting people.

And one more I forgot.The samsung camera he is using, and the mic build in is total crap.No mater what Mr. Andrew is saying about how good it is.Any HTC smartfon or Iphone will catch the sound better. Samsung is tragical in terms of sound from years.Best sounding device they build, was mp3 player with build in speakers, get famous by pussycat dolls video clip.Little speakers sounded better than headphone out, and that was powerfull 2x20mW. They get smart and ask for help from AKG in their smartphones - at last :).
@@Gawron339 i know my gear. tested and still have 2 zoom microphones. Those zoom microphones are very good for recording live bands when the spl goes very loud but they don't record under 40hz. There are some mics what records 20hz but to big of a investment. The samsung records good enough. How you can say the samsung mic is crap when you never had it in your hands before....think twice before you make a comment.

The difference between them is huge ...cantons are better by far, maybe the pairing with the amplifier is bad for B&W

The B&W are very beautiful sound and I like them a lot but the CANTON are even better.
Of course Canton is the winner. The sound is more open and clear and the highs are far better than B&W. Happy 2020 Andrew.

The canton have a bigger box and the Bass chassis ar bigger too. It would be a Wonder if the small b&w could beat them.

If the speakers are old the capacitors are dryed out and gonna sound terrible.. put some good brand caps in those speakers and enjoy 👍👍

i bought new testing equipment, a rode nt4 stereo microphone recorded on a zoom h4n recorder. The rode can pick up signals between 20hz and 20khz!

My opinion is that the Cantons have detail and reach hi frequency's.
But in mindle - low the BW are better.

I all depends what speakers you are used to. These are not expensive speakers, you have to compare the quality with under 900$/set costing speakers
