Gordon Laing i got my M50 in May, and have taken less than 50 shots with my 5D4 since. I was lucky i had a few good L lenses and never intended to get any M lenses, but when the 32mm came along I couldn’t resist. Normally I’d use my 5D4 a lot during our winter months, better ISO and better lenses etc, but the 32mm f/1.4 is so sharp ive managed to keep using my M50 though this time
If only I had found about the 32mm a bit sooner.... but my 22mm f2 is also not bad. Meanwhile, I have never used the standard 15-45mm anymore since months.
Good video as usual, you covered a lot here. It is a nice lens overall. I've been using the 32mm since the first day of release in the USA. I'm not super thrilled with how the AF is set-up in this 32mm and the 22mm, but they work well enough. At first I was confused why they designed this lens to focus so close for its focal length, but in practice it is really useful. Thankfully it has the limiter switch! That makes the price a litter easier to swallow. The 32mm and the 22mm help out with making the M50 and M100 I use serviceable for more situations without adapting anything.
I really appreciate your very clear, in depth explanations of the lenses. I also most appreciate the **split screen** comparisons of lenses! It made things very clear for the viewer to compare any subtle differences. Really well presented, thank you!!!

i have the 15-45 and to be honest i prefer the depth of field at 32on the kit, 1.4 is too fine, with the example at 2:45 i liked the fact all of you is in focus, rather than the 32 prime with your shoulders out of focus, one of the reasons i won't be getting any more M mounts for my M50 is the lack of M mount x2 converters and tubes. since i got the sigma 100-400 for the M50 and now have 2 2x verters and several tubes (at 100mm the siggy does 5mm macro! 1:4.4) i'll stick to finding ef glass. i still use the m mount lenses alot for compact when i just have a shoulder bag, i use the 22mm pancake as a body blank so i always reay to shoot from stowed away. if you know of any 2x teleconverters m mount to m mount i'd be very interested
Saw a video comparing sigma30mm vs canon 32mm. For me, Looks: canon 32mm Light weight: canon32mm Low Price: sigma 30mm Fast: sigma 30mm Quality: both So, if looks and weight won't matter to you, I think sigma 30mm is the best choice
This lens caused me to keep my M5. It renders quite well IMO. Now if they would add a 60MM F1.8 and a 15MM F2, the M5 would become a near perfect walk around travel system.
15-17mm would be great - narrow angle is simple to simulate by crop (with 24Mpx and sharp lense no problem) so wide lens would be way more usefull as universal walkaround/street lens than 35 (22) or 50 (32) eq. lenses. And I miss longer portrait and macro lens for M (at least 60, better 85-100/2.8 - but it would be the probably similar to EF lenses, no advantage in size/weight so there is no reason to make it for EF-M).
Hi Gordon. Love your detailed videos and find them really informative. I am planning to buy a 50 mm effective focal length lens. I am confused between the sigma 30 1.4 canon mount and this canon 32 mm 1.4. Which one do you recommend? Is it worth paying the extra 180 dollars for the canon efm lens ?
You should really try the focal reducer Viltrox EF-EOS M2 which I use for photography, it works pretty well with any EF lens other than the super wide angle lenses (after having turned the glass bits because the QC on the adapter is bad and out of the box I couldn't focus to infinity). The results are pretty good with my 50mm 1.4, my 24-70 f/2.8 (I) L lens and my 85 1.8 ... And gaining one stop is pretty cool, the 50mm 1.4 becomes a 55mm f/1! Also, because you are adopting Canon on Canon and the adapter doesn't need a chip to translate the data exchanged between the lens and the camera body, you get full speed AF and no compatibility issue. Lastly every EF lens you own becomes two lenses as they can be adapted with focal reducer or with the lens adapter with crop which allows for a pretty light camera bag.
@@jackseb0056 well it is not neutral but the effect can be unnoticeable or catastrophic, it depends on the lens. With my wide angles 17mm and 20mm (full frame) it doesn't work . With my 50mm, 85mm it works very well, seems to work ok with my 24-70L but not tested thoroughly and I haven't tested with my long tele lens just because too big to walk around with such a small camera attached. In summary, not perfect (don't think it could be) but so so so worth the money. Apparently Canon is about to make one but not sure they can do much better and it will be much more expensive ... Wait and see.
@@cameralabs All I want them to make are three lenses; a 10-20mm f/2.8 for video, an 85mm f/1.8 and an 18-300mm all-around zoom lens. I know I am asking too much.
@@snowwalker9999 18-150 is bad enough, who need even worse 18-300 ? I want 15-45/4 or 15-45/2,8 with low CA, better than acceptable distorsion and vignetting and good transfer of colors and contrast to use real pottencial of M5/M50 sensor !
I use my EF 50mm 1.8 with a Viltrox Speed Booster and im able to get an F1.2 50mm (actually 56mm) this way. I prefer the 50mm for portraits but i think the EF-M 22mm is a great lense for almost any situation.
This combo of M50 & 32mm produces some of the best images I’ve seen ... shame canon didn’t just scale up the M50 for better battery life and bigger hands
@@cameralabs M5 seems to me a bit better for photo work - it's a pitty its more expensive than M50 (why ?). I hope M5 II will be soon and it will be bigger body !
RAj Curry The whole point of the M range is it’s small size; so why on earth are you talking about scaling it up! If you want a scaled up camera, buy an EOS DSLR!
If it is too small, get the body cover: eh32‑cj it gives a better grip. Third party batteries are cheap and they are 100% compatible. Same does not apply to M5/M6. The reason I bought M50 was partially related to having already three batteries from the M. With M5/6 I would have had to spend 70 € for an extra battery.
@@bh69videa M5 has three wheels, M50 one. These kind of mechanical features cost. I think they will not bring M5 Mark II, and focus on the M6 Mark II as the top model. The whole idea of M series is to be small. The body cover is a simple way to increase the size. It adds 7 mm to the bottom and 3 mm to the side. 5:10 I thought that taking photos of the sun destroys a camera? When you use a DSLR it would also destroy your eye when looking through the optical viewfinder.
It's a pretty nice review. Just received mine for the eos m6 and for the 1st couple of shots i've done with it, i was quite enjoying it but still need to be tested in depth. It's good also to show the alternative with the adapter and the nifty 50. Thanks for sharing your thoughts
Finally! (unfortunately, I am no longer faithful :[] I used to use the 22mm prime bcuz it meant the camera actually fit in my pocket. Not the sharpest lens tho. It is "water-proof," according to my tests, using it in the rain; I went inside when the touch screen was too wet to function. The M50 is so affordable now; with this lens, it's a perfect combination for "camera-always-with-you-photography."
I orginally commented on this review and just complained about the price. However I am a fan of Gordon's reviews so some months back I picked up one of these lenses and from an admittedly limited number of native lenses, this really is a very good lens is a real pleasure to use and immediately replaced my 22mm as my favourite for this system.
I bought this lens about few months ago. For what it is, I would not consider it expensive. The LumixLeica 25mm f/1,4 Mk2 for the Micro4/3 system is even more expensive.
Hello Gordon. May I "bother" you with a question - maybe you have experience with it? I bought a used Canon EF-M 11-22mm lens from eBay classifieds. Now is problematic: What about lamellas whose alloy is partially like "chipped off" and seem eaten up? Can that be damage from a fall or impact - with otherwise normal and inconspicuous image quality? The slats are not oily. Not a fungus. Remote diagnosis is of course difficult. Viewed with a magnifying glass: Some of the lamellas seem to have slipped and the alloy seems to have been pitted. Some of them are not smooth at the edge but rather deformed and frayed. These look rusty. Water damage? The problem is that the seller is from Italy and does not show any reaction to my inquiries. Greetings Chris
Hi Chris, I'm not sure what you mean by lamellas? It's possible it may have been damaged or is worn, but if you're happy with the image quality and the price, it could be acceptable. it depends on what condition it was sold to you.
This is a good lens, and I've been so tempted to buy it However!… not too impressed with the focus speed, the price made me hesitate, and as a multiplemediamanager, i.e video as well as photography, the IS is important. I use to own the Canon EF 35mm f2.0 USM IS, and it was brilliant. I sold it to get the EF 35mm f1.4L, to use for photography a few years back when I was building my holy trinity of L's. I remember though, that 35mm 2.0 lens was clean, quick, and quite light. Given the choice between getting the EFM 32, and rebuying the EF 35 IS, I think I would rather go for the one with IS. Plus as an EF lens, I can still use it with my other Cameras 5D, 6D, 7D… Good review, but in short, it's too expensive, and not quick enough in my opinion.
Thanks! What would you like to see? I think there's enough zooms, so I'd like to see more primes, probably a 50mm next for an 80mm-ish equivalent. Either that or we could twist Sigma's arm into doing EF-M versions of its APSC lenses! Plus an EOS M50 equivalent with IBIS and uncropped 4k please!
The 15-45 isn't too bad in good light but not using it to much now. Just ordered the 22mm f2, got the nifty f1.8 with the Viltrox adapter, do I really need this 32mm at that price, no but I want one and the f1.4 is very attractive, one day maybe. What I'd really like just now is the EF 100mm f2.8 L Macro IS USM , yummy. Excellent review Gordon, have subbed..

I have the m50, as well as the Canon EF 50mm lens and adapter, and love the images I can get with it, but do find a lot of times that it is too zoomed in for me. I feel like this could be a great middle ground, but it's so dang expensive... gonna sleep on it.
Aside from the extra stop, how does this compare to a nifty fifty on an adapter? I've already got both, and I'd hate to spend almost $400 to get something that requires 2 magnifying glasses and 2 out of 3 experts to see a difference...
Hi Gordon, glad you made the review. I have this lens and optically It is one of the best 50 equivalent lenses for any system as well as being light and compact. Isn't it much easier to review a lens that's nearly perfect?

It is funny though because except for the old and good EOS M Ihave the new R so I am not sure if I shoukd go with the RF 35 1.8 or this 32 lens fir the EOS M? I know I can get better pics with the R and RF but the M is so much smaller and lighter so I can carry it literally anywhere. What do you think? What would you do?
Well, remember 32mm on the EOS M will become closer to 50mm, so it depends if you'd prefer a 35 or a 50. If I had an EOS R though, I'd get the RF 35mm f1.8, I'm very fond of that lens.

Remember there's TWO versions of the Sigma 30mm f1.4, but I assume you mean the Canon EF version. Unhelpfully I've not tested either, but hope to at some point.
@@cameralabs the sigma 30/1.4 for e-mount is one of my favourite lenses (I know you tested the 56mm 1.4 recently). I'd certainly be interested to see how it compares as it's my most used setup on an a6300. Looking at your review the sigma performs much better for eye-af on the a6300 but I suspect that's because the a6300 is a higher end body as much as the lens

I have the Kit-lens. What is the improvement for landscape photography? In your video I see the bokeh is much better. But is it sharper - or does it have other Advantages? Because it i not so cheap I want to know what I can expect....
@@wickie4801 but you have to ask yourself if this focal length is right for your landscape photos as for most people it would be too long. I would prefer a wider lens, like the 11-18mm. So do check to see how much you shoot at or near to 32mm before buying.
I wonder if ever Canon will bother to produce an affordable full frame 50mm f/1.4 lens for EF or RF mount. The existing Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is ages old.
if you are shooting things that are close, use the full. If you are shooing things farther away use the restricted one and your AF is supposed to be faster because it will not get distracted.
I have the nifty fifty with adapter as well as the kit lens and wondering if this lens will do a better job than my 50mm f1.8 for an all purpose lens. I like to go to car shows and with the 50mm I need to be 10-15 feet away to capture the whole subject. Will the native 32mm be a better option in this situation?
Native or adapted, the focal length doesn't change, so a 32 will be roughly two thirds the magnification of a 50. Things will appear two thirds the size from the same distance.

Thanks for the thorough review. Do you think Canon is going to continue developing lenses for the EOS-M line given how slow it has been to date and how it's now focussing (pun intended) on the EOS-R cameras and RF lenses? I wonder if this might be the last.
That's the big question. They deliberately intro'd this lens on the day of the EOS R launch to show they were still committed to / supporting EOS M. But even if they proceed at the same pace they have to date, I wouldn't expect more than one EF-M lens a year if at all. And if they slow down, then there'll be even less. It's a real shame EOS R isn't compatible in the same way Sony's e-mount is. But we can only speculate. Put it this way, I think there WILL be more EOS M products, but I wouldn't buy into it counting on a particular new lens to arrive.
@@FrasSmith I'll be reviewing the RP soon, although like the EOS M, it doesn't have a huge amount of native lenses yet... that said, Canon should match the number of EF-M lenses in the RF mount by the end of the first year of that system!
Get this, much more compact and there has been focusing issues on the Sigma though I do not know if they apply to mirrorless cameras, camerasize.com/compact/#776.791,776.379.2,ha,t The Sigma with the adapter is 900 grams, this is 235 grams.
Is the lens supposed to give the subject a bit of blur? I notice when it zooms in on you it isn't sharp all the way across, part of your body is blurred.
Doesn't the fact that it is a crop sensor change the aperture? From a 1.4 to 2.2? I know that's still good but I am new to this and wondering. Thank you for the content.
In terms of light gathering and exposure, f1.4 is f1.4, but in terms of equivalent depth of field, this lens becomes equivalent to using a 52mm f2.2 on a full-frame body.
@@cameralabs I decided to give it a chance and I bought the lens. I hesitated to get the 22mm, then it ended up being my favorite lens. Now I'm giving it's younger sibling a chance to impress too. Taking portraits indoors on a 50mm gives such a shallow DOF that I need to narrow the aperture so much to get someone's entire head in focus that the low light performance of the 50mm f/1.8 suffers. Here's hoping the 32mm balances variables better for my use case.

Nice review, although as you were spouting out those various lenses and their specs and prices, I have to say, I got lost early on. Canon has been slow to the market with wide aperture lenses, favoring narrow apertures, like a 24-70 L lens with f4? WHAT ??? That's crazy. If one is going to spend that kind of money, they should have wide options. I've never used anything but Canon lenses and Canon cameras even wore a Canon hat, missing options for wider apertures in affordable options, I purchased a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 and WOW what an amazing positive experience.
@@AgusRiyantoazel for low light and greater blurring in the background, you need a lens with a smaller f-number, so for the EF-M system, that means either the EF-M 32mm f1.4 or the EF-M 22mm. If you're ok with something that's as long as your kit zoom at 45mm, then go for the EF 50mm f1.8 and adapt it. So choose which focal length would be best for you using your zoom, either 22mm, 32mm or 50mm, then go for one of those.

Gonna start UA-cam channel plus i have instagram fashion page which im taking flatlays for and maybe som modells. I did research about EF m15-45 EF m 22 EF m 11-22 EF m 32 EF m 50-200 I have a budget of 2500 dollar but not sure about how many lenses m gonna need or is it better you use speed shutter with other Efs lenses? If your budget is that high, dont get the eos m50. Get a full frame camera instead and start off with the kit lens and a 50mm 1.8 lens. Then use the spare cash on tripods, batteries, SD cards and other accessories :)
Well, i thinking about to buy one but not sure which one, this 32mm or the 50mm with adapter to make it fit to the M50. The 32mm is quite expensive with 480 Eur and the 50mm inkl. adapter is over 250 Euro... so ist there a big difference between 32mm and 50mm?
Well they're completely different focal lengths, so it depends what you want to use it for. The 50 on the EOS M becomes around 80mm, so a portrait lens, whereas the 32 becomes around 50mm for a more general-purpose option.
@@cameralabs I would use it for portraits or blur pictures basically, the portraits with 15-45mm are not really fine. So, it might be better to take the 50mm?

As ever Gordon a very good practical review. I have an M6 and 4 lenses as a travel/casual carry kit and this includes the f2 22mm M lens which is very useful and whilst this 32 looks an excellent bit of kit because for me my M6 is a "secondary system" I'm not sure that I can convince myself that £500 is a justified spend :)

@@cameralabs i'm starting travel vlogg (not on this channel) i will buy the 10-18mm for sure with viltrox on m50(so i will have the adapter in any case). i know she is heavy but 15-35mm sigma look outstanding for maybe shooting inside the hotel room and getting this cinematic vibe i can't really find alternative and i know m50 suffering from low light problem. interesting option was actually 35mm yongnuo with speed booster viltrox someone had real awesome result issue is it's noisy or like you suggested the 35mm canon with adapter. the 32mm have amazing result with c-log i think its completely look way better than the "right out of the box"
The SIGMA 30mm F1.4 DC DN is just around the corner with a more attractive price tag. On the Sony mount the Sigma is said to be stunning. Could become quite a hard competition for the EF-M 32mm... What does Gordon think..?

Ive had this lens since Oct, and its hardly left my M50. In fact this combo has almost sealed the fate of my 5D4.

if you get a m42 adapter i recomend buying as many zenit and helios lenses you can get (especially the 44mm f2 lens)

The 32mm really is a jackpot for the EF-M mount. Sharpness even wide open is stunning and the flexibility for low light use is added benefit.

You should really try the focal reducer Viltrox EF-EOS M2 which I use for photography, it works pretty well with any EF lens other than the super wide angle lenses (after having turned the glass bits because the QC on the adapter is bad and out of the box I couldn't focus to infinity). The results are pretty good with my 50mm 1.4, my 24-70 f/2.8 (I) L lens and my 85 1.8 ... And gaining one stop is pretty cool, the 50mm 1.4 becomes a 55mm f/1! Also, because you are adopting Canon on Canon and the adapter doesn't need a chip to translate the data exchanged between the lens and the camera body, you get full speed AF and no compatibility issue.
Lastly every EF lens you own becomes two lenses as they can be adapted with focal reducer or with the lens adapter with crop which allows for a pretty light camera bag.
that is what I did. much cheaper than native lens. use booster and EF 50mm 1.8 II stm or EF 50mm 1.4 usm
think about to have one but i had read some reviews about the booster that it affects image quality, not so sure about that
@@jackseb0056 well it is not neutral but the effect can be unnoticeable or catastrophic, it depends on the lens. With my wide angles 17mm and 20mm (full frame) it doesn't work . With my 50mm, 85mm it works very well, seems to work ok with my 24-70L but not tested thoroughly and I haven't tested with my long tele lens just because too big to walk around with such a small camera attached. In summary, not perfect (don't think it could be) but so so so worth the money. Apparently Canon is about to make one but not sure they can do much better and it will be much more expensive ... Wait and see.
If they were making lenses like that, half of the cameras sold would be Canon Ms.
I wish they'd made it a long time ago, but at least it's here now!

I use my EF 50mm 1.8 with a Viltrox Speed Booster and im able to get an F1.2 50mm (actually 56mm) this way. I prefer the 50mm for portraits but i think the EF-M 22mm is a great lense for almost any situation.

This combo of M50 & 32mm produces some of the best images I’ve seen ... shame canon didn’t just scale up the M50 for better battery life and bigger hands
The M50 certainly has its faults, but at increasingly discounted prices, I really like it.

RAj Curry The whole point of the M range is it’s small size; so why on earth are you talking about scaling it up! If you want a scaled up camera, buy an EOS DSLR!
If it is too small, get the body cover: eh32‑cj it gives a better grip. I got mine as a kit.

Strangely it does snot come in black but the brown looks pretty cool especially with a brow strap which I also got. Third party batteries are cheap and they are 100% compatible. Same does not apply to M5/M6. The reason I bought M50 was partially related to having already three batteries from the M. With M5/6 I would have had to spend 70 € for an extra battery.
@@bh69videa M5 has three wheels, M50 one. These kind of mechanical features cost. I think they will not bring M5 Mark II, and focus on the M6 Mark II as the top model. The whole idea of M series is to be small. The body cover is a simple way to increase the size. It adds 7 mm to the bottom and 3 mm to the side. At least on my hands it gives support to the middle finger.

I used to use the 22mm prime bcuz it meant the camera actually fit in my pocket. Not the sharpest lens tho. It is "water-proof," according to my tests, using it in the rain; I went inside when the touch screen was too wet to function.
The M50 is so affordable now; with this lens, it's a perfect combination for "camera-always-with-you-photography."
I orginally commented on this review and just complained about the price. However I am a fan of Gordon's reviews so some months back I picked up one of these lenses and from an admittedly limited number of native lenses, this really is a very good lens is a real pleasure to use and immediately replaced my 22mm as my favourite for this system.

Yes, but of course the 50mm will be longer, than the 32mm so you'd end up with a short telephoto lens.

Well the 32mm 1.4 is extremely well crafted cost more to get lenses that perfect.
I bought this lens about few months ago. For what it is, I would not consider it expensive. The LumixLeica 25mm f/1,4 Mk2 for the Micro4/3 system is even more expensive.

Hello Gordon. May I "bother" you with a question - maybe you have experience with it? I bought a used Canon EF-M 11-22mm lens from eBay classifieds. Now is problematic: What about lamellas whose alloy is partially like "chipped off" and seem eaten up? Can that be damage from a fall or impact - with otherwise normal and inconspicuous image quality? The slats are not oily. Not a fungus.
Remote diagnosis is of course difficult.
Viewed with a magnifying glass: Some of the lamellas seem to have slipped and the alloy seems to have been pitted. Some of them are not smooth at the edge but rather deformed and frayed. These look rusty. Water damage?
The problem is that the seller is from Italy and does not show any reaction to my inquiries.

Hi Chris, I'm not sure what you mean by lamellas? It's possible it may have been damaged or is worn, but if you're happy with the image quality and the price, it could be acceptable. it depends on what condition it was sold to you.

This is a good lens, and I've been so tempted to buy it However!… not too impressed with the focus speed, the price made me hesitate, and as a multiplemediamanager, i.e video as well as photography, the IS is important.
I use to own the Canon EF 35mm f2.0 USM IS, and it was brilliant. I sold it to get the EF 35mm f1.4L, to use for photography a few years back when I was building my holy trinity of L's. I remember though, that 35mm 2.0 lens was clean, quick, and quite light. Given the choice between getting the EFM 32, and rebuying the EF 35 IS, I think I would rather go for the one with IS. Plus as an EF lens, I can still use it with my other Cameras 5D, 6D, 7D…

The 15-45 isn't too bad in good light but not using it to much now. Just ordered the 22mm f2, got the nifty f1.8 with the Viltrox adapter, do I really need this 32mm at that price, no but I want one and the f1.4 is very attractive, one day maybe.
What I'd really like just now is the EF 100mm f2.8 L Macro IS USM , yummy.

I have the m50, as well as the Canon EF 50mm lens and adapter, and love the images I can get with it, but do find a lot of times that it is too zoomed in for me. I feel like this could be a great middle ground, but it's so dang expensive... gonna sleep on it.
It's not cheap, but it is very nice! Do also check out the three Sigma prime lenses for EF-M - I made a video about them
Aside from the extra stop, how does this compare to a nifty fifty on an adapter? I've already got both, and I'd hate to spend almost $400 to get something that requires 2 magnifying glasses and 2 out of 3 experts to see a difference...
Hi Gordon, glad you made the review. I have this lens and optically It is one of the best 50 equivalent lenses for any system as well as being light and compact. Isn't it much easier to review a lens that's nearly perfect?

You included IQ and build quality and you just made me think about buying it.. It is funny though because except for the old and good EOS M Ihave the new R so I am not sure if I shoukd go with the RF 35 1.8 or this 32 lens fir the EOS M?
I know I can get better pics with the R and RF but the M is so much smaller and lighter so I can carry it literally anywhere.

Well, remember 32mm on the EOS M will become closer to 50mm, so it depends if you'd prefer a 35 or a 50. If I had an EOS R though, I'd get the RF 35mm f1.8, I'm very fond of that lens.

Remember there's TWO versions of the Sigma 30mm f1.4, but I assume you mean the Canon EF version. Unhelpfully I've not tested either, but hope to at some point.
@@cameralabs the sigma 30/1.4 for e-mount is one of my favourite lenses (I know you tested the 56mm 1.4 recently). I'd certainly be interested to see how it compares as it's my most used setup on an a6300. Looking at your review the sigma performs much better for eye-af on the a6300 but I suspect that's because the a6300 is a higher end body as much as the lens

I think he had it in miniature mode, the focal line is adjustable up and down but runs all the way horizontally.

@@wickie4801 but you have to ask yourself if this focal length is right for your landscape photos as for most people it would be too long. I would prefer a wider lens, like the 11-18mm. So do check to see how much you shoot at or near to 32mm before buying.

you did not explain the settings on the side of the lens FULL etc which is the normal setting?
if you are shooting things that are close, use the full. If you are shooing things farther away use the restricted one and your AF is supposed to be faster because it will not get distracted.

I have the nifty fifty with adapter as well as the kit lens and wondering if this lens will do a better job than my 50mm f1.8 for an all purpose lens. I like to go to car shows and with the 50mm I need to be 10-15 feet away to capture the whole subject. Will the native 32mm be a better option in this situation?
Native or adapted, the focal length doesn't change, so a 32 will be roughly two thirds the magnification of a 50. Things will appear two thirds the size from the same distance.

Thanks for the thorough review. Do you think Canon is going to continue developing lenses for the EOS-M line given how slow it has been to date and how it's now focussing (pun intended) on the EOS-R cameras and RF lenses? I wonder if this might be the last.
That's the big question. They deliberately intro'd this lens on the day of the EOS R launch to show they were still committed to / supporting EOS M. But even if they proceed at the same pace they have to date, I wouldn't expect more than one EF-M lens a year if at all. And if they slow down, then there'll be even less. It's a real shame EOS R isn't compatible in the same way Sony's e-mount is. But we can only speculate. Put it this way, I think there WILL be more EOS M products, but I wouldn't buy into it counting on a particular new lens to arrive.
@@cameralabs I do like my M6, but I'm definitely tempted by the RP. It would be nice to see a refresh of the M5 though.
@@FrasSmith I'll be reviewing the RP soon, although like the EOS M, it doesn't have a huge amount of native lenses yet... that said, Canon should match the number of EF-M lenses in the RF mount by the end of the first year of that system!

The Sigma with the adapter is 900 grams, this is 235 grams.
Is the lens supposed to give the subject a bit of blur? I notice when it zooms in on you it isn't sharp all the way across, part of your body is blurred.
when at 1.4 it will happen, stop down to 2.0 or 2.8 and it will make more of him non-blurry
Doesn't the fact that it is a crop sensor change the aperture? From a 1.4 to 2.2? I know that's still good but I am new to this and wondering. Thank you for the content.
In terms of light gathering and exposure, f1.4 is f1.4, but in terms of equivalent depth of field, this lens becomes equivalent to using a 52mm f2.2 on a full-frame body.

I love the corner sharpness and fast aperture, but the lack of image stabilization is problematic for me. I really like IS.
I agree, it wouldn't be an issue if the body had IBIS but none of the EOS M cameras do, sadly.
@@cameralabs I decided to give it a chance and I bought the lens. I hesitated to get the 22mm, then it ended up being my favorite lens. Now I'm giving it's younger sibling a chance to impress too.
Taking portraits indoors on a 50mm gives such a shallow DOF that I need to narrow the aperture so much to get someone's entire head in focus that the low light performance of the 50mm f/1.8 suffers. Here's hoping the 32mm balances variables better for my use case.
It's a pity that the Canon doesn't have a post focus feature like Panasonic, this lens would be perfect for it.

For portraits you need a longer lens get the adapter and 50 mm f/1.8 or 85 mm f/1.8. Start with the 50 mm, it is cheap. The 85 mm is here about 400 €.
50mm with speed booster has it and it's good enough with its price. Only the difference is the bokeh and noise.
Nice review, although as you were spouting out those various lenses and their specs and prices, I have to say, I got lost early on. Canon has been slow to the market with wide aperture lenses, favoring narrow apertures, like a 24-70 L lens with f4? WHAT ??? That's crazy. If one is going to spend that kind of money, they should have wide options. I've never used anything but Canon lenses and Canon cameras even wore a Canon hat, missing options for wider apertures in affordable options, I purchased a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 and WOW what an amazing positive experience.
It's hard to talk about lenses without a stream of confusing numbers, codes and acronyms!

@@AgusRiyantoazel for low light and greater blurring in the background, you need a lens with a smaller f-number, so for the EF-M system, that means either the EF-M 32mm f1.4 or the EF-M 22mm. If you're ok with something that's as long as your kit zoom at 45mm, then go for the EF 50mm f1.8 and adapt it. So choose which focal length would be best for you using your zoom, either 22mm, 32mm or 50mm, then go for one of those.

If your budget is that high, dont get the eos m50. Get a full frame camera instead and start off with the kit lens and a 50mm 1.8 lens. Then use the spare cash on tripods, batteries, SD cards and other accessories :)

Well they're completely different focal lengths, so it depends what you want to use it for. The 50 on the EOS M becomes around 80mm, so a portrait lens, whereas the 32 becomes around 50mm for a more general-purpose option.

As ever Gordon a very good practical review. I have an M6 and 4 lenses as a travel/casual carry kit and this includes the f2 22mm M lens which is very useful and whilst this 32 looks an excellent bit of kit because for me my M6 is a "secondary system" I'm not sure that I can convince myself that £500 is a justified spend :)
