  • On this episode I check in on DragBoss, and he is getting Cougar is ready for a road test. He adjusted the shocks to previous race specs, did tighten the front a few click on extension or he calls it rebound. He said too loose and be dragging the bumper. He has changed the steering on car with rack on the front he said. Had to have custom Steering arms made, for correct alignment, geometry he said too. Uncharted territory. I adjust the CalTracs the way DragBoss usually does, 1 turn of preload. Its not hard to do, Now I will know how to adjust them for my Mustang.
CalTrac Bar Adjustment Basics: From DragBoss
    1. Needs 5 inches of travel in front end. Except with high hp, then good DA shocks, or limit travel or you be draggin the bumper....ask me how I know.
    2. Car with weight sitting on level surface, jack stands suspension loaded. Think Safety. Set Air pressure you plan to run on all 4 tires.
    3. Driver in car and as it is raced with fuel.
    4. All brackets must move freely, front and rear shackles. No Binding
    5. Pivot Holes, Top Hits Harder than Bottom. High Hp/ track conditions, think about bottom, prevent wheel spin.
    6. Adjust Preload: Mark a flat on CalTrac adjustment bar, adjust from stop just touching the top of leaf spring, to 1 turn of preload. No benefit to tighten further. More preload, softer hit. Again, Think shocks, tight is right, loose for hot , less than ideal track conditions.
    KEY:
No Binding at any pivot point. Front: upper/lower control arms, shock pivot, roller stuff works great. shocks right length, strut rod. Rear: CalTrac bracket pivot, with no preload should move freely between leaf spring, not scraping or dragging sides, rod ends tightened centered, rear shackles, did my best 60ft, 1.27 with stock ford shackles, lubed and loose, lock nuts. Now have global west roller Del A Lum spring shackles. CalTrac shocks good to 9.99, Faster, then you better think about good Double adjustable shocks.
TiP: Going from a bias ply slick to Drag Radial slick, in my experience is worth, 10th off the 60.

Thank you Michael for noticing. I know this is his passion, but he will drop it, to be with us, or family activity. He is trying to teach myself, and the Bossettes, engines and cars. He said we are doing great. Thanks for watching my video☺

@@MrsDragboss Learning with tools is cool ! Would you rather have the Tortoise or the Hare doing the work ?
DragBoss moves forward in a methodical manner with great results in the end. No worries, I’m sure he has your Mustang in his sights 😉.

Yes Bill. Started out doing an interview and then hands on 👍.
The Bossettes are running and yelling outside 😊 I think it was high 60’s that day, so they picked playing outside over the garage. Soon they keep saying. Thanks for watching!!

Never seen this channel before. Beautiful Cougar. Timely I just bought my first set of Caltracs for my V8 swapped Ford Ranger. Thanks for the preload tips. Truck currently has slapper bars on it and they do work but they also seem to have bound up the leaf springs from the way they clamp on so the ride has gone to crap.

Your right, binding is the main issue people overlook. You should check out my husbands channel too, lots of suspension videos, he said way back. He is also going to have John Calvert on for a live chat. Here is a link. Thanks for subbing to my channel. Some shock adjustment video next.

Good video. I have Caltracs set on the bottom hole with 1/4 turn preload. I'm spinning off the line and can't give it full throttle until I get to second gear (its a c4). Any suggestions on my Caltrac adjustment? I will be adjusting them again asap. Thnx

I asked DragBoss, and he said, more preload, less hit, adjust to half, or full turn. Also leaving to high rpm, will cause tire spin. what do you leave at? Leave at say 33-3500, also what shock, how fast of a car?

    • @claytonstoolbox
      @claytonstoolbox 3 місяці тому

@@MrsDragboss Thanks, I leave at about 2500-3000 rpm and I come off about 1/2 throttle and slowly get into it. It runs low/mid 11s. Drag shock in front and stock shocks in rear. Its a Ford Pinto.

I adjusted the caltracs and took the car out to the track. The car definitely hooks better. I still have some tuning to do though. Thanks for the advice.
