After hearing this performance the famous conductor Karl Bohm said that "Bernstein conducted Tristan und Isolde the way that Wagner intended it to be conducted".
Not this particular performance. The acts were performed seperately with about a month in between acts. Böhm only heard the first act when he made that remark. He did not live to see the rest.
Not in context with the first thing he said. The full quote is this: " For the first time sombody dares to perform the music as Wagner wrote it! The rest of us never dared to."
THIS is Heavy Metal in one of its rawest forms. Unca Lenny knew where Old Man Wagner was coming from😎🤘!

Didn't he say "wir haben uns das nicht getraut"? - We had not the courage to perform it this way ? Very different meaning !

this is the saddest thing i’ve ever heard.
Heartbreaking.
How come the tempo is unbearable, but it stil sounds like the best I've ever heard....?
Stokowski's version is about two minutes longer.
Un canto de sirena.
