Seriously. I thought it was ending 4 different times. After it continued, I thought: ok, NOW we’ll see the ‘how-to’ nuts & bolts. Silly me. Somehow I still want to invest in the highest-quality beamsplitter mirror though haha.
I'd love to see pictures. I'm making Is a mad scientist steam punk Bar. The ghost will be on the back bar mirror. I'll have a hidden actor, projected into the bar mirror that will be able to see and talk to the customers at the bar.
I've seen the original diagrams. The ghost is supossed to appear be physically on stage, and the glass merely provide an angle of reflection. This was preformed in grand opera houses with five story balconies. The effect was noted from every angle.
Unquestionably, the dining room scene in the Haunted Mansion in Disney World is a great example of Pepper's Ghost.,knowing how it is done does not diminish the effect.
Ok, I'm looking to build something like this that works off a cell phone or tablet, but what I can't find is a guide to what exactly I should get for the beamsplitter mirror. Are there different kinds for different applications (i.e. more ethereal vs more lifelike)? Are there ways to enlarge the image from the source? Most importantly, where can I get this stuff and what will it cost?
James, You can get the glass teleprompter mirror here for the pepper's ghost effect: www.twowaymirrors.com/teleprompter-mirror/ There is no way to enlarge the image from the source in this type of illusion. Here is a link to our guide on pepper's ghost for more info: www.twowaymirrors.com/peppers-ghost-illusion/
Most use light weight thin film that is stretched, not glass as it produces double image not matter what you do and is much heavier and harder to work with. Hell you can do this with saran wrap if your clever enough.
I remember years ago how this illusion was NO WHERE to be found on the internet. It was a very secretive technique even when it is a very old one used in theaters decades and decades ago. I had to literally come out with the concept myself and now it is everywhere. The good part about experimenting to find out the effect is that I discovered other things in the process, other ways to make it happen in specific circunstances that I still haven't seen on the internet.
??? It's been everywhere for decades. I was reading about it in books when I was a kid, and it was all over the Halloween lists and project pages since the 90s. Kids discover it every time they try to look out of a dark window with a flashlight and see themselves. I'm not diminishing you figuring it out (you always have to figure out how to apply someone else's stuff to your own project, a necessary skill) but sheesh.
I figured out gravity like 2 years ago as well before anyone knew about it. It was no one to be seen on the internet. Now it is everywhere, "gravity" this "gravity" that.
I think this was what my science teacher asked me when I was a 5th grader. She showed me this illusion and made us write down how it worked. Annnnd she didn't provide the answer. I found it after all these years.... appreciate it.
Back in the '60's, I worked carnival midways. The big moneymaker was the Girl to Gorilla! The girl went up the step of the stage the curtain temporarily closed, when open she was seen at the back of the stage behind a set of bars. Slowly the hair grew her face changed until all you saw was the Gorrilla who then went berserk came forward busting through the bars. Half the audience ran screaming from the tent. The gorilla finally corralled was put back in the stage/Cage. Eventually turning back into a girl. The curtain closed as the girl came down from the stage. It then became a standard for many years on many midways.
Pepper's Ghost isn't a hologram. It's a projection and reflection. Yours is even less of a hologram since it's a reflection of a 2d image, unlike the universal studios queue illusion.
I love your videos, I wish you much more success please make a video about how you made this device, I am very interested in doing a project in my university with this
Trying to make this effect on a backbar mirror for my mad scientist steampunk bar. I need to do this live, So that the ghost can talk to the customers at the bar. Suggestions? Layout?
Hi Hannah, we are currently working on a peppers ghost system for our senior project. We are using acrylic panel however have come across the issue of dual imaging. Is there a way to apply an anti reflective coating to one side of the panel? If not, where can we purchase the beam splitter mirror?
JJ, Thanks for checking in! To my knowledge you cannot apply films to acrylic, usually they bubble and peel away. I recommend getting the Teleprompter Mirror here, 30R/70T in 3mm or 4mm thickness: www.twowaymirrors.com/teleprompter-mirror/
will there be differences if the screen were to be put on the side vs top configuration as you have in your video. aside from fact the video orientation must be arranged according to it. thanks
My dream is to make something like Joi form Blade Runner. I highly doubt I could make a true full sized hologram like that. But I was wondering is it possible to create a smart mirror with a female of choice, linked to maybe an alexa or something?
Pepper’s Ghost effect can also be seen as the entire dashboard display of my 1994 JDM Toyota Soarer. Every readout has its own beamsplitter mirror, eg. Fuel gauge, indicators, speedometer etc etc and all at different distances from the driver. This means that when you turn the ignition on, a completely empty, inky black dash display suddenly lights up with “magically” appearing displays that have a super cool 3D effect. A version of this car was sold in America as the “Lexus SC400” but unfortunately wasn’t equipped with the amazing dashboard or any of the other cool stuff like world’s first patented in-car touchscreen infotainment centre (crt) and adjustable air suspension, self cleaning mirrors etc etc. The downside is that even on full brightness, on a very sunny day if you are wearing sunglasses it is very hard to read. This is helped by wearing polarised sunnies but it’s still too dark. In every other lighting condition it looks spectacular though and I put up with it because I’m a gigantic nerd.🤓 Cool video, now when people keep asking me “How does that dash work?” (Or it’s more like “WHA??? HOW DOES THAT DASH WORK??”) But I don’t like yelling. I’ll show them this.
