hey, thank you for this video.
I am an elderly german woman, and it was my generation who faught for that PDA freedom. Our parents and grandparents didn't like it. That was in the sixties and seventies. Our cheeky answer to their critisism was: you made war, we make love.
if you don't like it, do not look at it, if you can. You do not have to do PDA yourself.
But I get it, we feel uncomfortable in different cultures, when we are confronted with taboos from our own culture.
As a young woman I went on a road trip to the US.
I was shocked and deeply embaressed with public bathroom stalls. There was too much insight. People could see my face, my legs, could hear and smell. For me the most intimate private things are what we do in a bathroom. Unfortunately I am a human and had to use such bathrooms! it seemed to me to be in a country of ...
As to free usage of public bathrooms: in the US i would have been happy to pay, even 20 dollars, to have a bathroom with privacy
what you feel about PDA might also be similar to what I felt about openly carrying guns, things with the only purpose to kill!
As a german I prefere affection exposed to arms and intimate bathroom stuff in public.
    Make love, not war
My parents got used to it, and maybe so will you

You don't see people carrying guns in public here like its the Old West. There's really nothing to be "uncomfortable" about for visiting Europeans. Intro: when two people are really flirtatious with each other, they're called Turteltauben, literally "flirting pigeons". So, even though at first glance they might seem disconnected from the video's main topic, the beautiful pictures of the pecking pigeon (pecking meaning both "picking on the ground" and "giving a little kiss") and the lonely, single pigeon at 0:37 are a metaphor for the PDA couple in the park and Nalf. Which is also why your facial expression is equally shocked as the pigeon's at 0:37.

Years ago I attended a language course in the US in which mainly Europeans participated. In the evenings we went to bars and clubs and were often told by locals that the easiest way to spot Europeans is that they are shy and reserved during the day, but once the evening starts, they will lose all their inhibitions and make out wildly with each other. :D
It was only when the "Amis" pointed this out to us that we actually became aware of it too. While Europeans were showing their affection for others so publicly, Americans were more likely to say something subtle like: "Let's have breakfast together". I didn't understand these hints at that time. Europeans are apparently more straightforward and direct in this matter :D
However, I also have to say that just because some people make out with each other doesn't necissarily mean that they‘re going to be intimate with each other. In my experience Europeans often just like to kiss for fun (without any ulterior motives). 😅So I guess there might also be a cutural misconception of „PDA“.

We often only perceive the things which are occupying our mind. My younger brother used to see drug sellers everywhere, at the very same spots where I used to walk to school. I never saw one. I always saw dogs and cats everywhere, he not. We have such good filters over our perception, that every person will see different things at the same spot and time. And if you do not feel comfortable with something you see, you can choose to look away. I wish you a loving partner so that you can display your affections in or outdoors, when and wherever you like!

Let couples make out all they want, I just don't wanna see them get naked and doing the devil's tango right beside me, for all I care. I feel like this might also be an age thing. When I was younger and in my first ever serious relationship, I couldn't wait to show the world my affection for my partner at the time. And the american word made me smile, because it sounds very analytic and almost clinical as if the word itself was trying to distance itself from anything too passionate. But that was just my personal impression.

This time I answer in English. Seems to be an American problem only. I'm still shaking my head in disbelief about what has bothered you there. When I first read the video title with PDA I already suspected that you wouldn't be talking about anaesthesia when giving birth ( Periduralanästhesie) nor about the precursor of smartphones ( personal digital assistant) , so I looked it up with Google and I only found 'pathological demand avoidance'.
So I started your video and finally watched your explanation 'public display of affection'. I've never heard of this before and I can't imagine that any European country has a term for this let alone even an abbreviation. And the Wikipedia article about this meaning of PDA was very complicated and difficult to understand.
But the whole thing is just kissing and hugging in public. ( I suppose no couple would have real sex openly.)
So nothing to make such a fuss about. 😄
Nalf, if you had looked up Wikipedia yourself this video would have been unneccessary.
    There you can find:
In most of the Western world, such as Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States, it is very common to see people holding hands, hugging and sometimes kissing in public. ... Although in the United States people are more repressed so even kissing in public is considered not acceptable whereas in (Western) Europe it's quite normal."
So there's the explanation. Here in Germany kissing and hugging in public is absolutely normal. When I was younger it was more common than nowadays, the young generation now is a lot more prude and reserved than we were in days before AIDS and with the hippies and sexual revolution.

The couple sued him for medical bills and pain compensation money and won. The verdict of the judge: the driver should have anticipated someone could "make out" beneath broken spotlights. The couple did get a fine too though.

I would differentiate between 'affection' and 'sexual intimacy'. There is nothing wrong with hugging and kissing in public I'd say but when it comes to sexual intimacy there is even a law prohibiting that, the offence being " Erregung öffentlichen Ärgernisses" ( causing public annoyance ). Watching something like that would make me feel uncomfortable not because of prudery but because I would feel that I wasn't supposed to see something as private as that.

At work PDA: in the TV room at the "guard house" (not sure in English, Wache in German). The medics weren't just watching TV, they were giving each other massages. In training: In-between class sessions on a hot non-AC day the students were lying on the carpet touching each other. They were all in their early 20s, but apparently no one had taught them what behavior is appropriate at the workplace/school.

I think here you would normally expect to see this from teenagers/students less likely from older people. But I would say that I wouldn't be shocked or surprised to see a couple of any age making out in a park on a bench, the wondering hands part I'd say was a bit far for public really.
