Part 1( • Stihl MS290 Rebuild: M... ): In this video I start the tear down process. I break down the chainsaw down to the piston to discover that internal engine damage has occurred. The piston is severely damaged.
Part 2( • Stihl MS290 Rebuild: M... ): In this video I complete the remainder of the engine tear down. I find additional components damaged and the culprit of the engine failure. I make a list of what is required to rebuild and place my order.
Part 3( • Stihl MS290 Rebuild: M... ): In this video I install the new complete engine assembly. During assembly I encounter a few minor issues. To finish it off I fire up this newly rebuilt chainsaw!

I love how you share the real struggles we all go through. The edited videos make is seem like everything works out perfectly…it never does
Your video was both interesting and informative. Continue filming your tutorials showing John Q Public that just because we live in a disposable society doesn't mean that we constantly have to be ripped off by making new purchases or expensive dealer repairs. Its refreshing to see the younger generation rolling up their sleeves and doing it themselves. Keep up the great work youngman!
Great job! The new engine sounds pretty sweet. "Only the best for these cheap parts" LOVE IT!
Thanks for all of the shout outs. ~Mr. C.
You did good work on those videos! I'd highly recommend your videos to anyone looking to do the same conversion.
Thanks for the video, you have helped me makeup my mind to convert mine to a 390
Epic fix n upgrade
Nice job Young mand
.
Freshly rebuilt saw... Old gas!!! 😱
I think you did a great job. I enjoyed all 3 parts.
Thanks for watching and for the compliment!
Great video, you're at that 1K subscriber!
Thanks, so exciting!
The threads on the OEM screws for oil pump are coarse and the aftermarket pan takes machine fine threads screws.
Really wanted to see it in wood!
You’re smart
I almost screwed up my threads in that stud trying to double nut that...
had to get a rotary dremel and cut flat notches for a adjustable wrench 🔧
Did you find a better way to do it?
Have you had a chance to work it hard? i cut about 6 cords a year and wonder if it will hold up??
I ran it for several hours on a Tornado cleanup job. Worked great! I've also used it on several landscape jobs (nothing too strenuous). I'd still like to put it through more before I give it a full stamp of approval, but so far so good. 👍
did you torque the 4 crank/cylinder bolts??
Nah, just lock-tite and used my elbow gauge.
U know u can block off ur decomp hole instead of driling into ur air shroud? Because now your saw will be overheating
Superbe 👍. Est-ce que le carter plastique de la ms 290 est le même que la ms 390 ? Par rapport à la hauteur du cylindre de la ms 390.
Oui, ça a très bien fonctionné.
@@ThriftyGarage Merci beaucoup !
Do you know if this is possible with the MS291 as well?
From my research 🧐, unfortunately the answer is NO 😢. Sounds like there are several differences.
You should really do an update on this swap... how is it holding up?
Unfortunately, the decompression valve failed on last weekend. I put in a new valve but I think it's R.I.P. I definitely got my money's worth though. It's only $30 for a new cylinder head and piston. I'll do a video soon with a teardown to see what was damaged.
Those holes on that bottom plate aren’t threaded. Those screws are basically self tapping screws and make their own threads. I also would have done away with the decompression valve and just put a decompression plug in the hole.
I agree with the plug. We had a decomp valve failure and it fell in the cylinder...
Est ce que le carburateur d'origine a était conservé et ou a été acheté le moteur
Yes, the original carburetor was used. It has been working well.
Where did you buy your parts from ?? I have an 029 super i wish to build into an 039 , i need a new rear handle as well. Did you do the muffler modification ??
Looks like the original item I used is currently unavailable on Amazon. Here is a link for something similar: amzn.to/2yVImIK
I did do the muffler mod, but probably wouldn't if I were to do it again.
Okay thats almost precisely what i have ordered except the kit i got comes with some more stuff. I also got oem stihl crank seals, all hoses, and plastics. Why would you steer away from the muffler modification next time ?
@Paul Cox i am still waiting on my cylinder and piston kit its been over a month on amazon FFS im doing the 039 top end and a muffler mod at the same time
I'm not sure if it's Amazon or shipping companies or both that are too blame for the slow shipping times.
can u change the cylinder 390 to 660 and use the same crackshaft?
i need a bigger motor with only cylinder and crack shaft
I don't believe so. The 290 and 390 share the same chassis.
Can i upgrade my stihl ms 180 to ms 210,230 or 250 any one of these ??
I don't believe so. But many people port and muffler mod these for more power. It has to share the same chassis.
more or lees what not to do ??
didn't like big hole for decompressor valve... you could just use plug off it's not that hard to pull
Yes, these decompressor valves are known for failure. I’d recommend installing a plug.
How much did you spend on parts?
I can’t remember now. The current price is around $70 for the whole assembly. Check out the link in the description. I purchased the damaged chainsaw for $100.
Carb needs adjustment
Never showed how to get the piston into the sleeve.
Don't worry I'll be doing another video. I just ordered another cylinder and piston kit. The decompression valve failed and a piece fell inside causing internal damage😠. I'll be tearing it apart in a future video to find out what happened and rebuild it again.

doesnt start out to good !!!!
You skipped assembly of the clutch and so much more wtf?
This is one of several videos. If you need more check out those other videos. I believe I also linked another channel as well.
Proof anyone can do this conversion, the kid doesnt understand the kill/start/choke switch layout
