Rob Roy MacGregor + Brenda Stubbert's Reel ~ Fiddle Tunes!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 сер 2024
- Here are two fun fiddle tunes: A Scottish strathspey called Rob Roy MacGregor, and Brenda Stubbert's Reel -- a Cape Breton reel that was composed by Jerry Holland in honor of the fiddler, Brenda Stubbert! I also edited together a video showing some of the places I visited when I went to Scotland this summer. =) I had a mountain of footage to sift through, and it was hard to decide which short clips would go into the video. :o
Rob Roy MacGregor Strathspey (also known as Rob Ruadh Macghriogair) is an old tune. I'm not sure who wrote it, but I don't hear it played very often - at least not in Colorado. I really like how it sounds, and I hope we start to play it a lot more often! The tune waffles between minor and major keys, and it sort of makes the tune flip between sounding dreary and sad to happy and hopeful. I've heard that Robert Roy MacGregor was a cattle drover (in the United States, we'd probably be more familiar with referring to a cattle drover as a "cowboy"...) and outlaw -- with stories about him depicting him as a Scottish version of Robinhood. Perhaps his more mischievous moments may be why the tune shifts between major and minor?
Brenda Stubbert's Reel is a very popular tune composed by Jerry Holland. It can follow lots of different tunes and strathspeys, and almost every session I've been to has played it at some point. I've noticed that a lot of professional fiddle players can somehow get this tune to really dance, and I haven't been able to figure out what they are doing to get it to sound like that. If I ever figure it out, I'll definitely make a video about it, because it's something I've been wanting to learn how to do for a while now. I really love this tune, and I like to play it a lot -- even if my version sounds kind of flat to me!
I learned so much while I was in Scotland! One of the things I learned is that a strathspey always needs to be followed by a reel. I was told this is because there is so much tension and emotion in a strathspey, and that the tension needs to be released with a fast-paced reel. I probably would have never learned that if I hadn't gone to Scotland and talked to local musicians, so I thought I'd share the information! :D Knowing that information has helped me start to put together sets a little better. There's something really exciting that forms when you put a reel after a strathspey!
Scotland is a beautiful country! I loved visiting all the different museums, historic sites, musicians, and local sessions. I can't believe that I actually was able to go on such a nice trip -- it almost felt like I was living someone else's life... :o
Thank you for watching, and I hope you have a good rest of the week! =)

One of my biggest dreams is to live in Scotland. It is triple harder when you live in Turkey but hey: Hope and determination are what keep us going.
Beautiful video and playing! Also, what a great tribute to such a beautiful country, culture, and the amazing Scots!

Enjoyed this video, Katy. I'm Scottish and live near Inverness. You managed to visit loads of places! 😃
Beautiful scenery and landmarks! Thanks for sharing!
I love your videos. You present yourself as a very down to earth person. Not all rock starry.
Love your fiddle!
Breagha, Katy! I would love to visit bonnie Scotland where my ancestors lived in Argyll. And also Ulster, Ireland where they lived for a time before going back to Scotland and then here to America.
Love the music & video. Thank you for sharing this :-)
Beautyfull song, beautyfull performance.
Thank you for your gift to us all.
Thank you so much for watching and listening! =)
Thank you for posting this. I'm sure Scotland enjoyed you as much as you enjoyed Scotland.
Thank you!! I had a good time in Scotland, and I learned a lot! =)
Katy Adelson Hi Katy, I hope you’re well in these difficult times. Thank you for your music and this video in particular. Scotland is beautiful and you’ve included footage of most of the places I particularly like , some of which I’ve just returned from. I’m off to Dunkeld soon for a weeks fiddling course trying to soak up inspiration from Neil Gow. Now I’ll watch your video again 😊
I love the sound of your fiddle for Scottish fiddling! Great playing!
Love this trips scenery. I love the tunes of the last two videos too!
Beautiful music, well done!! Nice tour in Scottland
Thank you so much! I love Scotland! I really want to go back! =)
Great video (and playing) Katy.
loved the playing - and that was an amazing tour of Scotland
Awesome job !
A beautiful place! Nice fiddling! Thanks! 😎🎻
i love your music good job
Excellent playing. And I so love the video that's on my bucket list that'll be my last bucket I think I would like to move there at least for a while.
Wonderful playing once again. Brenda Stubberd's Reel is one I have been playing for a long time (not as good as you) and I agree with the tune dancing - that is hard to achieve. Now you need to come to Cape Breton Island where it seems everyone can play an instrument.
That was great! Scotland's just too beautiful.
Thank you! I love Scotland so much! =)
I have a passion for everything Scotland! I am a piper ( great highland, small pipes, uillean pipes) as well a fiddler!
Wonderful
Fine bit of fiddling, of fine tunes, to a background of wonderful memories of Scotland!
Another great video Katy, as always!
Thank you so much! I really had a fun time over there! It's very different from the US with all the old castles and towns. =)
Awesome tunes and playing. Love that scenery. Hope to get over that way someday :D
Thank you, Mandy! I had so much fun over there - Scotland is a beautiful place! I hope you get to visit it, too! There is a lot of fun music in Scotland! =)
You have a sure eye with the camera. Beautiful scenes, well composed with good exposure. God has gifted you bountifully. Thank you for sharing your gifts with the public.😀
Lovely tunes and a great video. Glad you enjoyed your stay in my country.
Keep em coming ! :)
Thank you Katie. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Well Done
Wonderful playing and great video. I was almost feeling homesick!
Thank you so much for watching and listening! =) I really loved it in Scotland! ^_^
Lovely!
Marvelous!

the 5 people that put thumbs down on this are strange, this is amazing, thank you :)
Nicely done as usual.
Thank you so much! ^_^
I like the thoughtful, meditative sound of your version! I didn't know that about reel after strasthsbey, tha ks for sharing that info. I'm gonna try putting some together too.
Thank you. Beautiful and appreciated side info
Thank you for listening! =)
I love the music you make!
Thank you so much! I'm glad that you like the music! =)

That was some beautiful fiddle playing! I will try to learn the Brenda Stuberts Reel. :)
Thank you for listening! Brenda Stubbert's Reel is a really fun tune to play! I hope you have fun learning it! ^_^
That was epic playing - Never heard fiddler music before, but you are turning me into a fan.
Thank you so much! Yay! I'm glad that you are starting to like fiddle music! ^_^ It's lots of fun to play all these tunes! =)
Very nice, katy! Besides your playing, your manifestation of feelings about pieces is really beautiful. Waiting for your tutorial :)
Thank you so much! I'll definitely make some tutorials on these tunes. ^_^ I have a few more tutorials that I need to make before these tunes, but they'll come! =)
Tutorial would be good. I am getting confused between the second and last parts of the Rob Roy tune.
In both your UK videos i noticed you've managed to find a beauty in my homeland i never knew exsisted :)
I live 10 minutes away from Brenda Stubbert 😊
You need to post more often, you're very talented
Thank you! I realize that I need to post more. I've been trying to get a schedule going so I'm not always scrambling to get a video made. Hopefully I'll be able to keep up this channel better. That'll be a good New Year's Resolution! =)
Katy Adelson I'm hoping for more fiddle lessons as well since you influenced me to start playing. I will be switching over from guitar as well and lesson videos help me a great deal. :)
So pleased I found your videos - it's so inspiring to listen to you! Hopefully one day I'll be able to play like that - I only started taking lessons 3 months ago, but I'm so in love with Scottish and Irish music that I'm very motivated to learn. And Edinburgh is certainly a good place to be in that regard, I'm surrounded by talented musicians! :)
❤❤❤❤!
Thank you !
Wonderful fiddling, Katy, and I especially enjoyed seeing your travelogue of Scotland. I was also there for a delightful 5 days this summer, in Edinburgh and in the country to Dunkeld. A magical place! BTW, you have such nice tone. I'd love to see more of your posts. What kind of fiddle do you play?
nice
I Love escocia
I will be there !!!
I love this!
Thank you so much! I'm glad you like the video! Thank you for listening! ^_^
That name : crazy art😂💙👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👌🏻
You play so brilliantly! Do you have the sheet music for the Rob Roy MacGregor Strathspey?
Cool video tour, thanks! BTW, I'm betting that reel isn't easy at all to play, so keep plugging away, I bet you'll get there! ;)
Skye the most beautiful place on earth
Beautiful travelogue with some great music - I love this! Must have been a fun trip - the land oozes with history! I'm amazed that all the Scots are a bit fuzzy; I guess that's what happens after sipping a bit of 21 year old Glenfiddich :)
Thank you for watching and listening! =) It was a super fun trip! I made a gigantic scrapbook with pictures and receipts from all the places I visited. I had never had a vacation other than to visit family, so it was really special to be able to explore another country. Now I want to travel the world! I really liked how nice, helpful, and casual the Scottish were. It reminded me a lot like how the people are in Colorado.
Nice ... Thank you ...well played
Thank you!! =)
Your Welcome .. :)
love scotland
Jay Ungar has an album released that is full of duets with James Galway, (you should do some covers of some of his new compositions ☺️
Come to Ireland ye young cutty off a lass😎
Hope you had fun!
love to live in scouthland
You should visit Ireland Katy!
i am not being silly but rob roy macgregor is actuly my ancestor
1:58 I ain't gonna lie. For time considerations, I would just take the top rock off of a stack that somebody else started and record me putting it back on =P
Thank you, RaceGrooves! ^_^ lol, I agree! I spent a good 10 minutes on that rock pile....What I didn't include in the video was how the whole stack of rocks fell over as soon as I let go of the last little pebble. xD I had to rebuild it for the subsequent shot, but I'm sure it fell over as soon as I left. :/ It was still fun. =)
Ard Choille!
Ha, when I saw Blair Castle I wondered if you'd seen Niel Gow's fiddle! PS Blue sky at Glenfinnan? You lucky quine.
I also got to hear a man play Niel Gow's fiddle! It has gut strings, and a very quick response, and sounds very nice. The historians suspect Niel Gow had multiple fiddles, and that the one in the castle is not the finest fiddle he had owned, and that it was most likely from the later part of his life. If that's true, I wonder where his fancy fiddle from his younger years went? :o It was an amazing experience! ^_^
I was surprised at all the blue skies! I think half of my trip had blue skies in Scotland. :o I brought gloves and lots of heavy clothing thinking it would be rainy and cold most of the time, but I should have packed some lighter clothing because I started to get kind of hot always wearing a sweater when the sun was shining! ^_^
I also thought it was awesome that the sun is out and shining at 4:00 am, and doesn't set until like 23:00 or so. I loved the long summer days (but I'd imagine the short days in winter are kind of rough...) I remember when I came back the the USA, the first thing I noticed was the sun setting "early" at 19:00 on the drive home from the airport. xD
😀👍
Not sure if I gave a thumbs up for a beautiful video or out of a disguised sense of extreme jealousy....
Thank you so much! I'm happy that you liked the video! =)
Nice video ! Have you met Lindsey at Stirling ? :-D
Thank you! I have met her very briefly, and I was one of those super awkward and excited fans that probably scared her a bit... (...sorry Lindsey.. :/) I was just as awkward and excited when I met Taylor Davis, too... :/ Both violinists are so awesome! =) Meeting UA-camrs is a very interesting experience. ^_^
I was nervous when i met Taylor to and i could barely string 2 words together lol , even tho i am admin of the official Taylor Davis fan group and admin of her official UK page and had been speaking to her online for years. I think the same would happen if i met you to lol, considering you and Taylor are my 2 favorite violinists.
I've watched your other videos and you play really well in them. Good intonation and phrasing. In this one a find the lack of a defined tempo a little weird. Is the tune like that? If it's not, it would be oh so much more powerful if you kept a good, clear marked tempo.
The tempo is there in Rob Roy, but the modal nature of the tune keeps it hanging wistfully in the air. I love it. Thanks, Katy.
At 0:40 - are those flying saucers in the lower left corner?
Recognised Inverness.
Can I play this on my mandolin?
Great music & video. I don't like the 60fps though.
Somebody needs to paint the phone booth.
lol! Yeah... it was in need of some help... xD
Very nice fiddling, Katy. Thank you much!
Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnncccccccccccrrrrrrrrrrroooooooooiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiaaaaaaaaaaaaabbbbbbllllllleeeeee
Ses qui t'as prof de violon
Who is playing the bodhran on the reel??
I played it on a piano keyboard with the "Forest Kingdom II" sample library plugin. =) I'm sure I probably didn't get a proper reel drum beat going... I need to research proper Celtic drumming a lot more... :o But it's fun to try! ^_^
