Honestly you are the best UA-camr at actually teaching how to understand the differences you’re looking to create instead of just showing what the tools do. You show us what are sculpture should look like
I also grew up in MS. I thought I recognized that buttery accent slipping through. Also your videos have been incredibly helpful. These have been the best I’ve seen so far, and I’ve been watching A LOT. Thanks.
I use to have alot of online production teachers but I have stopped following all of them from the day I found you. you are such a blessing to me you bring clear understand to everything thanks alot.
Dude, thank god you made the Bob Lablaw joke just after blob blob blob. I was basically the DiCpario pointing meme: "look! I got that!". Also, copious ammounts of awesomeness in this class, thanks.
Once again, I discovered a Joe Gilder video that I totally missed. There are some gems here. The discussion in the section at the 1:25:47 mark particularly caught my attention. I remember years ago I produced a 2 verse Hip Hop track called 'Psycho Drama'. Being loosely based on the theme of nightmarish, and psychotic movie thrillers, I added heavy reverb delay on the vocals and screams for effects. It was an original idea that I had heard no one else do in a Hip Hop track and it enhanced the concept of the song. I remember another producer questioning me on the use of the reverb, and telling me it didn't sound good. As much as I had a reason and purpose for the artistic creation (which was received well by others), it was still belittled by a 'seasoned' producer who didn't seem to get it. That stuck with me for years, and your comments just brought it all back. I have come to realize over the years that established artists continue to utilize reverb in ways that are very unique, like for example Elton John (Bennie and the Jets), Prince (Lonely Christmas), The Hollies (Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress), David Essix (Rock On), John Lennon (We All Shine On), and of course The Foo Fighters song that you mentioned. I'm sure some people would have probably never thought to add reverb to any of the songs that I listed, but I wonder how impactful they would have sounded without it. At any rate, I just found your comments on the subject to be quite interesting.
I wish I had this word doc you referenced in this video! A friend of mine told me about Studio One recently, so I started lurking and found your channel. Making the move from another DAW asap
Well I’ve only just found this video, so I watched it in the future. Simply awesome. I really appreciate you spreading your knowledge out into the world for us to enjoy. Thanks heaps .Lee
I found a dbx263x de-esser on Reverb for under $70 that I started using as a hardware insert with Pipeline XT to handle my de-essing. Since I only have the one unit I just have to re-record another de-essed track and either use some of that track or all if winds up better than the original. But allows me to keep the original as-is in a non-destructive way. Also works nicely to tame hats at super harsh cymbal tracks and then I can apply the same technique to those tracks. My way of being nice to my computer and keeping CPU leves nice and low.
A good tip referencing high end boost I heard somewhere is to balance a vocals high end w the mix/song. Match it with cymbals, percussion, acoustic or whatever else is going on
Wow that's crazy i've been dealing with that exact thing. the Bright vocals are super easy to fall in love with! And yeah whenever I go listen to my favorite tracks, they don't have they brightness on them
I think I’ve watched every single Graham Video. Now I’ve started watching yours Joe I really enjoy the variety of teaching methods you guys are the best. I really like this video the attention to detail the audio examples are super awesome. I really get what your doing and the fact that less is more makes a huge difference. We live in a plug-in driven mixing society and realize that you don’t need all the fancy toys stock plugins are good enough Thank you Joe for your awesome videos. I really like your songs too I’m definitely a fan on Apple Music
Joe! What a great topic and very well presented! I really like your relaxed and honest way of sharing your thoughts on mixing and sound! There are so many youtube channels out there where the presenter talks like their way and opinion is the only way... I've been mixing for maaany years but still learn a ton from watching a webinar like this. Cheers from Sweden/Henrik
Congrats on the no thumbs down. That's unheard of! Great vid! The Fabfilter Q has an option where you can solo the frequency you are attenuating or boosting and sweep it around and listen for annoying frequencies. It has a really tight Q as well so it does what you are doing but with a whole lot of extra ease. The Ableton stock EQ 8 has the same thing but much lower quality and a much broader Q to listen in on. I don't push products but it makes doing what you did soooo easy.
Wow Joe! You sing Gospel ... rockin' Gospel! I'm listening to "Help of the helpless" and it's nice! It' a bit of time that I follow you in your video about Record and Mix with Studio One (#homestudiocorner) and I think you have a vedy good method for an acoustic singer like me (normally I record my songs - cover - with just voice and piano) really oriented to mixing voices and acoustic instruments, more than midi instruments or loops or whatsoever. And now this surprise: you love Gospel also! God Bless You Joe!
Joe thanks for this!!Man i applied this compression technique to my vocals and i heard a tremendous difference. This technique really helps with over compressing your vocals.
That southern drawl is very very funny dude. Still laughing my ass off. And I live in Georgia. That’s what makes it even more funny. Or funnier as it were
Hey Joe can you do a video on how to set up a proper recording session, with everything from checkin the levels and getting a good sound on the headphones?
Interior complexity never sets in when i admit i produce tracks that aren't pleasing before. Every creator of music does when haven't got it made. And in the same breathe now that i gat it made i can probably say, "I am the best"! I feel for the artist because all they have today is equipments. Talent is out the window.
My way to diminish sibilance is to record my vocals with my mic pointing slightly at the side (left or right) of my mouth, not right in front of it. It's very effective when it comes to plosives too.
This video is golden Joe, I thank you very much! It was so informative. By chance could you make your checklist document available for download for referring to it as I mix? Thanks man, keep up the great content👍🏻😊
Hey... When I go into consol and look at my volumes... And I see that my tracks fluctuate.. My bass will go up and down on Db before it rests on - 1.0 on the right in the meter so I tried to use a compressor to get the fluctuations that goes above -1.0db in volume to just be one volume But the meters still go up past -1.0db.. I can't hear it but the levels are all messed up after I spent ages getting everything to go no louder than - 1.0.. Then I set master level to - 1.0... Is it just the meter and all the sounds are same level.. My minds playing tricks on me lol
It sounds like you’re mixing with your eyes and trying to solve problems that aren’t actually problems. Take a big step back and don’t go hunting for problems that aren’t there.
I'm only eight minutes in to watching at the moment but I would say the starting point for achieving a well balanced mix (or what infinitely helps to get a well balanced mix from the start) is to create busses for the vast majority of the instruments and balance the individual tracks within each bust to get better control over the final mix. There will undoubtedly be some fine tuning made at the end but this really helps in the initial mix process and helps when trying to create the final balanced mix by adjusting each BUS.
Hi Joe thanks for the good content. Hey should I place compressor on my vocal track before I record the vocal or just do a little stage gaining, record the track and use compressor?
I've been looking for videos on mixing vocals for a while, and I've never seen someone so confident in their knowledge as you. Great video. Just want to let you know that the link to your site is not working. I have subscribed so I'll check if there are news. I'm very interested in your courses.
When i got into mixing i found myself reading through online forums. I could not believe the amount of negativity and saltiness coming from the pros... It almost felt like an unachieveable feat starting out... But i found your channel and Graham's recording rev channel... Ironically i found your channels reading thru the shitty comments on such online threads and i was curious... Seeing as how and why these professional who have worked with famous artists talked shit about your channels intrigued me.... That was the best irony because watching both the channels has encouraged me to keep at it... I dont know why the threads or the people on those threads are so negative, but what i know is they have only managed in discouraging people who are starting out, and i am sure they have not helped a fraction of the people you guys have been able to help and influence through your videos...
Thanks for the comment. The audio industry is a weird place. Some people still have this "don't share your secrets" attitude, as if being generous would be BAD for them.
I wish I had your voice. My voice has some nice deepness from my dad, but there's an annoying tinge from my mom's side of the family. I downloaded a plugin that cuts out more drastically than the stock plugins in DAWS. I found the exact frequencies in the upper mid area & just lowered them all the way. It totally got rid of that annoying sound in my voice, but it also made the vocal sound flat. After doing what I did, there's nothing I could do with the other frequencies to make it sound good. I still kept it in that particular song, because it was just a cover. If it was one of my own, I would never make such a drastic cut. I basically have to learn how to use my vocal chords in a way to cut out some of that horrible sound. I've heard other people do it.

Your advice on mixing has helped me improve greatly, but it's your sense of humor that keeps me tuned in. Hilarious! Continue to do what you do.
11:30 was the funniest. Right after he said it, I looked at the time so I knew where to go later. LOL
Honestly you are the best UA-camr at actually teaching how to understand the differences you’re looking to create instead of just showing what the tools do.
You show us what are sculpture should look like
Best video tutorial I ever seen. You explain things so well. Thanks for sharing the love with all of us.
I also grew up in MS. I thought I recognized that buttery accent slipping through. Also your videos have been incredibly helpful. These have been the best I’ve seen so far, and I’ve been watching A LOT. Thanks.
3+years have passed, and this content is still up to date and awesome. Thank you.
I use to have alot of online production teachers but I have stopped following all of them from the day I found you. you are such a blessing to me you bring clear understand to everything thanks alot.
Thank you so much Joe Gilder.
I’ve been searching for you for what seems a lifetime-time to get to work-Thanks 🤙🏽
The point about the brightness illusion i just learnt it too, all my favourite records have surprisingly dark vocals
You're doing a great service to artists and engineers everywhere. Thank you. Oscar IV
1:10 😂😂😂 Luvved the Gomer Pyle impression
Dude, thank god you made the Bob Lablaw joke just after blob blob blob. I was basically the DiCpario pointing meme: "look! I got that!". Also, copious ammounts of awesomeness in this class, thanks.

I like reverb!!
Thanks for your time and sense of humor.
Keep the spirit high, it works.
I have watched this one many times. I just wanted to say Joe that you are honestly the best teacher anyone could ever ask for.
Thank you, Sam. That means a lot.
You're completely welcome. I approve of the British accent btw lol.

I like to use gain automation instead of volume automation for the exact same reason
Thanks Joe
Great video Joe. You rock !! There are a ton of good advices in this footage. BiG uPS !! & HAPPY NEW YEAR to you &² yours. Greetings from France.
We don't recall seeing the settings for the aggressive compressor settings 🤔
This is great this is the essence of mixing everything he is saying everyone should follow ..and he can sing which makes everything 10 times better
Haha. Thanks
this dude has REALLY helped me though the years
Amazing lesson. Thank you Joe.

Nice Video. Very Helpful

Totally
I found that deactivating the "look ahead" feature on S1 comp gives you a more snappy compression specially on heavy peaky transient material.
You're the best Joe
Yes, great one hour and half! I feel like I very well spend time - rarely can I say that about UA-cam videos of that lenght! :)
Thank you
Great tips man!
Joe Gilder...you're a damn fine human being. Great video specifically!!!
One of the best way to get a great vocal mix is too have a great vocalist and song and recording engineer. Notice I never mentioned gear.
Of course
Thank You! Great tutorial and so many important things to learn in one video
thanks to share you knowledge dude, thats hudge basics
this is just a miracle in youtube.
Thanks for your teaching, still learning alot, can anyone explain why some mics are upside down?
Very cool
This video is golden Joe, I thank you very much! It was so informative. By chance could you make your checklist document available for download for referring to it as I mix? Thanks man, keep up the great content👍🏻😊
Joe starts @4:27
Thanks
Did anyone write down those informations in his sheet by any chance? 😅
Dude, you make awesome content! nice vibe, keep it going :)
this is great..
That Muse impression made me lol! :D

Yep. I agree.
ready
Great webinar Joe! Could you please post or email the PDF outline you used for this? Thanks!!!
Yes could u post the outline please joe
The shirt is fine. Can I have one to wear in my Studio Recording class? (XL)
People from Nashville can always do great impressions of characters from Andy Griffith show
In general what would you categerise your genre of musc also what is the genre of this sonng ?
thanks
Can you help me to add good effect on a track please?, I can send you the track to mix
Hi Joe thanks for the good content. Hey should I place compressor on my vocal track before I record the vocal or just do a little stage gaining, record the track and use compressor?
IMO, I would just make sure you gain stage at the beginning, make sure them levels are at a healthy level, just save all the mixing at the end!
Hey Joe, the “Recording Killer Vocals” is down, is there anything that replaces that now?
I've been looking for videos on mixing vocals for a while, and I've never seen someone so confident in their knowledge as you. Great video. Just want to let you know that the link to your site is not working. I have subscribed so I'll check if there are news. I'm very interested in your courses.

Do these principles apply to rap vocals as well, are there any differences?
