The Iconic Patek Philippe Calatrava - A Perfect Gentleman's Dress Watch - Review Of Ref. 3919

  • In today's watch review we take our first in a series of videos for 2017 looking at the legendary Swiss brand Patek Philippe. I thought the best place to start would be with their best selling flagship model, the Calatrava. This thin, minimalist iconic manual wind dress watch (ref. 3919) personifies many aspects of the haute horology watchmaker and has an equally interesting story of how it came to be. This understated luxury watch could very well be one of the most perfect dress watches for the modern gentlemen.

    I have been a watch collector for a number of years, I have bought (and sold) a number of more expensive pieces, however over recent years my enthusiasm dropped as the costs involved didn't make sense. After watching your videos my enthusiasm has totally been reignited!, whilst I still have a few more expensive pieces I have recently bought a SKX and a Junkers based on your comments. The be frank the quality and design of just these two watches really put the more expensive prices into question in some areas. You Sir, have opened my eyes and rekindled my love for collecting !. Thank you indeed !!!

    I just watched it live in shop today and is extraordinary watch. I couldn't believe it is so thin and elegant. I didn't realize how much I like it until I watched it live. Great review as always!

    Pure class that managed to resist the larger watch trends of the 1990's. Your review was spot on across the board. Couldn't agree more and if anything is going to maintain value it's a Patek.

    I first saw Calatrava 3919 at Beyer's, Zurich, Bahnhofstrasse, in July, 1985. I lost my heart and my mind there and then ! Calatrava 3919 and it's successor 5119 are THE ultimate dress watches. Sheer beauty and understatement. No wonder that particlar watch is a synonym for Patek Philippe.
    Nice review !

    Hello TGV. Great view and indeed a significant watch. I believe this is the first Patek ever reviewed on this channel right? What a mile stone! Congrats.
    Also, after serval research I've done. I learnt that Patek actually making their movement "unhackable" intentionally. The reason behind it is they want the second hand keep "tell the passing of the time" even when you are adjusting the minutes and hours.

    Nice review as always TGV. I personally like the ref 5196r when it comes to Calatravas. I think it embodies the essence of this line. I also am a big sucker for the vintage Omega Constellation Pie Pan series in precious metals. Pure elegance and class in dress watches. Keep up the good work. Your videos are alway like a visit from and old friend.

    Long time lurker and subscriber. Love your content. Have a moderately large collection. Many by your review recommendations. But the updated version of this watch, the 5119, is my grail watch. I don’t love ostentatious dress watches, and my dailies are divers or tool watches. But this. In a suit. With a great pair of classic dress shoes. Is utter perfection.

    Quite a watch you got there. I love it how subtle the grandeur is. That movement would be a pleasure to service, with the split bridge and all. Of course it takes some balls to touch that :-) Patek makes great watches, but they are clearly meant for people who have more money than they can spend. I once browsed a watch dealer page and noticed a great looking complicated watch and the price was just 590.something. Then I realized that the dot was not a decimal point but a thousand separator and the watch was a Patek :-) I think you got the age right. I'm 22 years older than you and I think that watch is aimed for men of my age. Not me, being a weird hippie, but the suit type.

      TGV, try searching amazon for 'carbon digital caliper' (should give the right thing on both UK and US amazon) and you'll find calipers made from carbon fibre (so they won't scratch anything) for under £10. They are probably slightly less precise than the steel ones, only reading to 0.1mm rather than 0.01, but that is more than accurate enough for measuring watches! Super lightweight too!
      Keep up the great work,
      John

    • @joaovitoramaralsilva9745
      @joaovitoramaralsilva9745 7 років тому

      TGV my caliper is has Carbon Fiber tips and the fancy display, as John suggested, so they don't scratch the watch and the display reading is way easier, specially in a video!

    The Calatrava is very conservative rather than boring, it is the preferred choice of the wealthy who are always discrete about their wealth. Rich people like Rolex and the AP, the rice are alway proud to show their riches. A very grand introduction of the Calatrava in typical TGV style, good review with valid points.

  • @BigZebraCom
    @BigZebraCom 7 років тому +1

    Hey TGV, thanks for the review. The close-ups of the Calatrava didn't show the 'micro-scratches' that I often see on gold pieces. Does Patek use some special formula for their gold? I noticed that the bezel and the back of the watch both avoid a mirror finish that would make scratches more noticeable.
    Thanks again for giving us a look at such an awesome watch.

    besides very few of us in the world being able to afford such luxuries, myself definitely included, money aside, this is one of those piece to admire and can appreciate as a watch aficionado, but not anything I believe most of us would actually want to own... would definitely not have enough occasions to justify wearing this enough.
    plenty of nice other things to spend $10K-20K on.. a select number of fine watches and still have change to get a nice camera and lenses to make some photographic art with instead. but, maybe that's just me..
    That being said, although maybe not on the same level as this Patek, I have an opportunity to experience a fine dress watch, none the less.
    I have essentially inherited what I believe to be a very nice vintage Vacheron Constantin dress watch.. Probably doesn't cost nearly as much as this piece here, but I feel just as elegant, understated and classic. Definitely small and thin in design to house a nice mechanical movement. I can't seem to match the model # to anything I've searched for online, but it's some earlier model of the Patrimony design.. from the 60-70's. It's in great condition and been in a bank vault for a long time.. at least 20 years, maybe 30+?
    IDK, great condition, I'd love to wind and see it work, but I've been warned that since it's been untouched for so long, I should probably have it looked over and serviced first before trying to wind and start up the mechanical movement.. there's a chance that solidified oil, grease or whatever lubricant(s) that is inside the watch may have dried and hardened and I might actually cause more damage.
    I'm sure to get this thing serviced will not be a small bill, but I suppose it could be potentially far less expensive that repairing the watch if I do something to break it because it's not been used for so long.

    It seems to me that most of the comments on this particular watch, come from Ford Focus car owners. Dream on, but don’t knock the price of quality.
    I’m personally lucky enough to own a Patek Calatrava Amagnetic 1960, bought some years ago. It’s pure class, with its simple classic design and I would not swap it for anything else. I also own two other watches. The first being a 36mm steel/white gold Datejust, worn almost daily since 1980 (a classic now) and a recent purchase of an Omega 300 diver, new addition. A beautiful, dive watch, blue dial, with a blue rubber strap. I think Omega has produced a strong contender to challenge Rolex.

    is there any chance you could take the glove off when doing wrist shots? It kind of obscures the way the watch would normally look on wrist. not sure if others feel the same way.
    thanks for the great videos!!

      tynan nida,
      Yes, I totally agree with this!
      You cannot get a good idea of how the watch looks on the wrist while wearing the glove.

      tynan nida no, keep the gloves, it's much better with gloves.

    I think I'd like a Nomos or Stowa Antea and pocket the difference. Still a very classy watch if you have the coin.

    Would be good if you could give an estimation about how much of the price that we pay for this watch goes for the gold. For example, do you know how many grams of gold is used in it?

  • @hristomanchev1030
    @hristomanchev1030 7 років тому

    This is probably the most classic and beautiful watch i have ever seen, but honestly i would never pay 20 grand ( unless i was extremely rich ) for this watch. As you said , 2 Rolexes and a bunch of Seikos is better for that price :DD.
    Anyway, awesome review as always. Keep up the amazing work.

      mario siaven really no comparison between a simple Patek with hours and minutes and a modern complicated Lange.

    Nice review. I have one, I bought it new just after they brought it out. I have a big wrist, but this still looks gorgeous. I like the fact it is so understated. For very formal wear its perfect. One of my 'keep forever' watches.

    A beautiful timeless watch no doubt, but I dare say that the A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia is more my cup of tea! Love all Patek Phillipe's to bits but if it were my money to spend I would get an A. Lange & Söhne instead (my grail is the langematik).
