Hey congrats! How long do you think it takes to be able to play the harder classical pieces? I’m a “pianist” but ever since moving out (I let the piano at my parents) I wanted to start learning an instrument that’s “easier” to carry around ^^’ and the harp just sounds heavenly 😍

I've already been learning for one year and now I had a year break. I was discouraged at the beginning because the learning process is so slow for me, I feel like I'm always gonna suck at harp, I can't imagine myself as this person who learned the harp well and plays for others, whether at small musical events or for therapy, and this is something I had in mind when I bought my harp. I also have irrational thoughts that it's too late to achieve this dream and other goals too. Your words inspired me, because I definitely need to forgive myself - I'm not doomed to be a failure, I had other things in my life going on, so I'm letting the guilt go and starting a new page :)

Well, I think I’ve actually watched this video at least 10 times and it helps me every time and gives me trust. I’ve started playing the harp at the age of 30 (actually 2 years ago) after 20 years dreaming of it and if I can make progresses, it’s also because there is people like you to prove that there’s not just one way to learn the harp but it’s always possible to reach our dream, no matter how old we are and if we have lessons once a week in music school or if we learn by ourselves. I’m really thankfull for your channel and hope we can communicate in the virtual harp circle as soon as possible! Thank you very much Christy-Lynn!

This is a great video Christy. You are so positive and motivating. I started in 2009 at age 51! I thought I would be fabulous by now, but I am not. Unfortunately, due to my work situation at the time and then health problems, I didn't make much progress the first few years. Eventually I became too ill to play at all and was going to give it up. Then last year I decided to give it another go and found a teacher who is extremely patient with my health ups and downs and always encourages me, even if it takes me months to get one tune down. I realize I probably won't achieve any of the dreams I initially had when I started out, but it brings me joy and gives me something to do so I feel like I am productive on some small level. Being chronically ill is very isolating as you have to give up so many things. Playing the harp is wonderful because it is something I can do at my own pace in my own home. I may never be as good as I would like to be, but at least I have goals to work towards!

    • @LearningtheHarp

What a challenging and beautiful story, thank-you for telling me about that. Wow, it sounds like life has taken some rough turns, but I admire your commitment to following the things you love even when it's slow and frustrating at times. The wonderful thing about music is that it doesn't have to be complex to be beautiful and meaningful. Even plucking one or two notes can bring such satisfaction with the lovely tone of the harp. Keep up with reaching for those goals and enjoying the journey. I'm happy to have you watching my videos and commenting too - thank-you! xx

Thank you Christy. We all have our crosses to bear. I was always a very high energy person so it never occurred to me that I would become chronically ill one day. I never had any desire to play the harp as I was busy raising 4 daughters, working, running my own handmade soap business, raising goats and chickens, etc. Then one morning at the end of December 2008, I woke up and for some reason I felt I had to learn to play the harp. I have no idea why as it had never crossed my mind before. Perhaps it was in preparation of what was to come? Who knows? It was the oddest thing. Anyway, I rented a small 27 string harp and off I went. Luckily, I was able to purchase a Triplett Celtic II harp before I had to leave my job in 2014, so I am blessed that I at least have a harp of my own and my husband doesn't mind paying for my harp lessons and my sheet music addiction! LOL!!!

I actually started playing the harp three weeks ago with a rather difficult past concerning learning an instrument. I tried the violin, piano and flute but always stopped after a few months because my expectations were too high and I slowly lost my motivation when realising that playing an instrument takes a lot of time. Now I´m 17 and decided to try it one more time, with the harp, after setting myself realistic goals. This video encouraged me even more and I´m really thankful for that. My L&H Ogden will arrive tomorrow and I think it´s finally the right time for making music instead of just listening to it. Thankyou again ;)

But when I entered the convent I did not have a good harp. I have not played for more than 50 years. I had bad habit of curling. Never taught then right way. I feel like a real beginner. But my teacher is so patient. Now I am learning to do thumbs up finger on the strings. Slowly what I learned as a young girl is now coming back. I love playing now. The humility piece got me. We never had enough money to go after non-school based arts hobbies or sports, so I never asked to learn. As a kid I was never good at the instruments that I tried to learn via school, and so as an adult that has me dreading not knowing how to do it! But you're right, learning is enough. Having humility is important. There are so many things in life that are not instant gratification! Thank you for your inspiration. I'll be 30 this year, and I'd love to give it a try. XO - Alexandra

    Thank you for this message.
The first time I started playing harp I was 25 years old, too. At the time it felt "too late" to be serious about it, but I was so passionate and obsessed with the harp, I pursued it despite those feelings. I had a wonderful highly trained teacher. I loved it more than I can express.
The problem was, as a pianist, my musical knowledge far surpassed my physical abilities on the harp. And I pushed myself too fast. Practiced for hours every day. And I got seriously and permanently injured. I was devastated.
Over the next 8 years, my injury has flared up any time I have tried to do some gentle practice with "correct" form/technique. I have given up hope, and have been grieving the loss of my dream.
But watching your videos is inspiring me to find a way. Harp is my one true love. Maybe I could modify my LH form, or even arrange certain passages of music to accommodate my limitation. (In a nutshell, I have a restricted ability to raise my left thumb, and pain in my palm if I try to pluck with it at the proper angle).
There are many gifted musicians who played with "incorrect" form for similar reasons... Do you think this is possible for harpists?
If anyone else has read this far, please learn from my mistake. Pursue your dream, but go slow and steady.

Now it's the time! thank You so much for this warm positivity❤️

I love the sound of the harp! I've always been a vocalist and songwriter but never played an instrument short of learning a chord on guitar around 18 yrs of age. I never had a desire to learn an instrument and currently work with produced music for songs I release professionally as an artist. But the harp. Grips me. I'd love to learn to play and it's never too late to do things you love or explore new avenues of things you're interested in! The only thing holding me back is affording an instrument!

My dream is to teach in poor communities (make classical music more inclusive), compose and work in music therapy if possible. I hope I manage to achieve this. Great "Medicare" project to get my brain to learn a new skill. Because the right hand fingering is "backwards" from piano, it takes a little concentration, but I do see a little progress after each rehearsal. I am in my 50's and play guitar and a few other instruments including voice, but I finally acquired a Harpsicle last week and took my first lesson on Monday. The day I bought my instrument was the first time I laid hands on a harp. I played some simple songs right there in the store. really needed this, I've been wanting to learn how to play the harp since I was little and saw harpists on TV, and then when I got older and started getting interested in celtic/folk music. it's something that's always been a part of me, like I feel there's a harpist in me that wants to come out. But I've never had the courage to ask my parents (who always struggled financially) to allow me to take lesson or rent/buy a harp.
I'm in university now and fees are high, I asked my parents if I could take lessons but they cannot afford them, nor a harp. plus, next year I'll have to go study abroad (I study japanese culture and language so that's a must for my education) and I just can't ask them to pay for that, my uni fees and a harp.
I'm already 22 and I'm afraid I'll never get to learn now, since my priorities have to be on my studies.
but as you said, it's never to late. maybe in 2 years or so I will finally have the opportunity to learn. thank you Christy-Lyn! keep it up with the awesome work :D

I am actually glad that I only started learning harp after graduating and starting my first job, because it meant that I never felt like my harp playing was a chore or something to feel guilty about because of struggling to find the time - I just loved every minute! If you have a day job after university you will hopefully have more time in the evenings and week-ends and you'll hopefully be able to save for a harp and afford lessons. Best of luck, I hope you are able to realize your dream soon, Christy-Lyn is right it's never too late.

Christy-Lyn's music z it's had its ups and downs honestly. I work a lot and take care of my dad I practice martial arts and train four times a week. So I'm very busy lol but I love playing the harp much. I've been playing on my harp-sickle my teacher has been encouraging me to get a larger harp and I decided on the Ogden. I'll be getting it this weekend. The truth is some traumatizing things had happened to me during a period with my ex martial arts teacher. I was pretty messed up for a while and didn't know how to pick myself up. I met a girl at a music festival she was playing the harp and I fell in love with the sound and I asked to learn. She's been teaching me a few times a month. Playing helped me Live with what happened and I moved on. The harp has changed me. Life is hard and I've learned a softness from the instrument and I'd like to share it with people. That's all. Overall a good experience.

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  7 років тому +3

Hi again! The first step is to rent or purchase a harp. I'm not sure where you live - it might be possible to rent a harp which will help you to figure out if you'd like to purchase your own. Otherwise I would recommend purchasing a Harpsicle (preferably the Fullsicle model) from Rees Harps. They are good value for money, and a smaller investment when you are starting.
The next step is to start learning! I would strongly recommend taking harp lessons from the beginning rather than teaching yourself, because harp technique is counter-intuitive and it's easy to develop unhelpful habits that can be really difficult to break and hold you back from progressing. Weekly harp lessons can cost anywhere between $40 - $80 for an hour lesson, but it's really worth the investment in the beginning because it sets you on the right track and prevents a lot of frustration along the way. If you don't have a harp teacher in your area, Skype lessons are a great option! Send me an email and I will send you a document which helps you to figure out what you are looking for in a teacher.
Also - I give Skype lessons and always start with a free Skype consultation :) Pop me an email and we can chat more!

I always thought the harp sounded beautiful. I used to play piano in high school and I was in choir so I have a little bit of musical background. I never even thought about playing the harp at all. It came to me in a dream that I was playing a beautiful song on the harp. Then I woke up and decided that I wanted to learn how to play the harp. I feel like this is my calling. I feel like this is something that I could be passionate about. I decided to order a baby harp to start out with but I'm really excited about seeing where it goes. I have no music instrument background and I started taking my 1st harp lesson in 2020.. the harp teacher made me feel very miserable when I was first playing around the harp. Then I quit the lessons and never touch the harp again. But inside myself I am still in love with this music instrument esp when I hear the songs played by harp on UA-cam. I wish I could be one of the harpist one day

Ah Jennifer, it really made my heart sad to hear about your bad experience! A music teacher should NEVER make you feel miserable!! Please know that it is nothing wrong with you, but a mismatch with the teacher. I know a few people who have had similar experiences, but when they finally decided to try again they realised that it can actually be fun to learn the harp! If you still feel something inside you that is begging to learn the harp, please try again!! Those tugging feelings are there for a reason. Maybe it’s part of your purpose to play the harp! If you would like to chat more about this, please share your story on the Facebook group “Learning the harp together”, and the other adult harp learners will encourage you and give suggestions on how to go forward. I’m sending a big hug to you! 💜💜💜

I want to start too, I'm 18. But I don't even know how to read music properly, is it going to be very hard? I have a good tone tho, and sometimes I can hear and play in the piano without knowing the notes, I wanted the harp because my perception of it is that you go more for the tone of the melody you're trying to make, not really for the exact and strict notes as piano and guitar.. that's why I wanted the harp. Is it true or I'm wrong? Should I try or too much commitment to do something good?

I feel if I was serious about learning I would also be a pro by now. It's all in practicing a lot. You should take lessons too which I only took when I was a kid. Great video Christi.

Thanks for the comment, Laurie! I think it's more important to enjoy the harp than to be an expert, so if you're satisfied and enjoying playing at an intermediate level there's nothing wrong with that. But if you'd like to take things further then it's certainly not too late! Lessons can be a real help with motivation and consistency, that's true.

I'm 29 and I just started learning the harp at the end of last year. I really love it, and I think one advantage of learning it on my own (and paying for lessons and the harp myself) is that I feel like I can go my own pace and I don't feel pressured by any expectations.

    Hi,
I know this video is quite old by now, but just wanted to leave a comment giving my thanks. So far, I've found many of your videos very helpful, and a big part of that has been your positive attitude towards teaching others. I'm turning 30 this year, and the only other instrument I've ever really touched has been the kazoo. Been drawing since I was real little, and still have so much to improve in that area of my life, but I always like to challenge myself with new things. The harp has especially interested me, though, for a few years now and one other youtuber I watch has really inspired me to shoot for my dreams regardless of what they may be, so I figured why not now? Anyway, hope to see more of your videos really soon and to keep practicing.

You're so sweet. I'm 26 & wish to play the drums & the harp. You've really inspired me. I gave up on drawing but I also really want to push myself. Even if it's only doodles I really enjoy it. 💜✨

You're such a sweet, positive, inspiring young lady. I've always dreamt of playing the harp. Your message just hit me straight in the heart. I took introductory lessons 4 years ago but did not progress. I am now 50 (!) and I believe it is serendipitous that I found your video. You re-awakened my dream.

Aw, that’s so lovely to hear! I do plan to make a comprehensive step-by-step online course, but in the meantime, have you seen my playlist of 14 UA-cam videos for learning the basics step-by-step? It’s called “How to play the harp for complete beginners” 😃
