I love this movie because it taught me that sometimes you’re not the love of somebody’s life. Sometimes people just come and go and it’s about embracing that and being your authentic self because that’s all you can do.
Exactly!I love how you said this! "Sometimes, you're not the love of somebody's life" and you can't help it! There's nothing you can do about it and it's not the other person's fault either. Your phrase actually kinda reminds me of something she says at the end of the movie where she says that when she saw met the guy she married, she instantly knew, and then tom asks what she knew and she goes "What I was never sure of with you". It's so real, sometimes you just don't have that sort of connection with someone but you do with someone else. And it's nobody's fault. Great message because it's ultimately what happens with most of relationships and crushes
What was heartbreaking to me was that in truth Summer wasn't uninterested in a relationship, she was uninterested in a relationship with Tom , hence shes married in the end of the movie. She just had to meet the right person, so the whole "I am not interested in a relationship right now" is just saying "I haven't meet anyone yet, that have made me want to be in a relationship". And that is life, and you can't blame Summer for that.
Lischa I totally get you. That scene on the bench where he asks what’s different about her fiancé, she something like “I just felt sure with him, and I never felt sure with you ”. I think she wanted it to work with Tom, but since he never saw her as a full person, and never heard her, they didn’t have much of a chance.
i have never related to a character more then when tom started smashing them dinner plates...thats so me ...same for when he said i say we are in a relationship damn it ...and stormed off..thats me too
I loved the movie, but I never hated Summer. I hated Tom because I had been Tom so many times before. Thinking you can win over a girl who doesn’t want to be won over. I saw him make the same mistakes I had made. I was hoping for him not to get his hopes up. Despite everything that happened, I loved the movie because the narrator was right, it’s not a love story.
but he made her a mixtape or burned a cd!!!😩& she didnt even bother to listen to it lol she was pretty heartless but i get what u mean. it is hard when u do all these romantic gestures to someone who doesnt really want them☹
Arvin Buenaagua I see so many confused men maybe it’s our culture now. Pain is necessary part of our development. Part of the blame is that our culture is shifting to pre romantic era where parents or tribe decide who we marry who we love for economic reasons etc. We are more and more scared of falling in love and we as a culture see Tom as stupid. We just want sex without this painful aspect of it meaning we just want Tinder or Facebook hookups or some friend introducing to our partner etc. We don’t want spontaneous love just popping out and potentially damaging our whole life. I bet this movie will be talked about, discussed, argued with by almost every high-schooler in years to come. Re-introducing the Manic Pixie Dream Girl concept to the youngsters, and regenerating new fans of The Smiths for each new era. Just like it did to me, Happy 10 Years, one of the most influential movie in my life
Yeah but summer isn’t a manic pixie dream girl. She’s a person all on her own and doesn’t exist just to further Tom’s life. If anything, Tom just sees her as one.
A. L. Michael That’s exactly right, the whole film is from his perspective and because if this he constructs this false idea of an ideal girl, a manic pixie dream girl when in reality she’s a normal, independent woman who is far from what he built up in his head. I think this is important to keep in mind when watching the film.
I predict movie is supposed to be a horror movie for newer generation. Could be a bible of how not to be a Tom. Fall in love stories are slowly being more and more devalued there are no romance anymore. It’s considered anti-romance but it’s one of the best romance story in my opinion. Romance doesn’t have to be always successful.
Yeah, it's anti-romance as in anti-romance-genre/anti-romcom, but I bet that most of the romantic feelings that happen in the world are one-sided and they often involve a fetishization of someone else rather than actually loving the other person. Incidentally, I just watched Marriage Story, and it's funny that the best "romance" movie of this year is a falling out of love story.
True, Summer was blatantly honest about what she thought they had and hadn't but that doesn't get her of the hook. It was painfully obvious that Tom read more into their relation than she did. I think partly she knew she was setting him up for a world of pain but she let it happen anyway. Also you don't casually forget to mention you're engaged when you attend a wedding with a former love interest, however serious or unserious it was. Not telling Tom about that and then inviting him over for the engagement party was either cruel or ignorant. That said, I do think Tom was at least as much at fault. He projected his dream girl onto her rather than seeing her for who she really was and pretty much ignored her vision on their relationship. Doesn't make that last scene between them on the bench any less gut-wrenching though.
@Arvin Buenaagua stop this bullshit. any guy that does what she did is immediately label and arsehole. The summer character was VERY shit. giving mixed signals is not a good thing
That wedding scene was too cruel, even when she came to his place -- in rain -- to apologise was not so innocent. (We all loved it, but what would Tom take from that? )She could've been more proactive and avoided everything what happened in next 309 days. When you fall for someone, you do all these things. You hope things might work out. Also Tom should've ended this relation much sooner and stopped being addicted to those small shots of endorphin.
Tom never listened to what she said. He never heard her. And the perspective is so skewed that we don’t ever see Summer’s side of the story. Being with person who never hears you is impossible. It will never work. Trust me, I’ve been there.
@Arvin Buenaagua no not really. because usually charming assholes like this are just using people. I'm surprised you're failing to see this. The male character in this story was not appaling but the female character was super appaling She did not try, from what I remember she just strung him along and then ghosted him. In real life, women like this, men like this, don't last in the marriage that comes after a relationship like the one in the movie. They'll get bored quickly with the marriage and move on
@Everything I watch a ton of interviews with actors, you'd be surprised how little they remember past roles, especially ones that were more than a couple years ago
500 days of summer is indeed a great movie. I keep coming back every single time to watch the movie not just for the beauty, but also the realness of the story.
I love this movie. I get Summer. I actually feel sorry for her. She was honest since beginning, and I think during the relationship she tried to love him. When she chose watch a movie instead of going back to her room as Tom suggests we can see that she’s trying but she’s not happy. When she’s crying at the end of the movie that they’re watching I think it shows that she wanted to feel the same way Tom does, but she doesn’t love him. Also in the end she says “I just woke up one day and I knew.... what was never sure of if you”.
yes.. also I get that she says she's "upfront" about not wanting a relationship, but at the same time, actions speak louder then words and she acted like his GF. Also, despite her saying that.. that was a lie b/c she did end up marrying someone else. She just didn't want a relationship with Tom
She knew he was sincerely ready to love her in a long term way and yet to me it always felt like it was a self gratifying adventure to her without any consequence.
At the end when Tom asks her she says “it just happened, what I wasn’t sure with you” So that is why she was acting like he’s gf, she actually tried to fall in love with him.
From PeopleMagazine: “My hair has been the same colour pretty much my whole life,” she insisted. “My hair is naturally dark brown. If you look at my family, my dad has dark brown hair. My mum has dark brown hair. My sister (actress Emily Deschanel) has brown hair. All signs point to brown hair.”
Sadly I think most people can't access the bench now. I went to the spot with Google Maps and it looks horrible now too (no grass, graffiti nearby, and the plaque on the bench has been removed as far as I know, but maybe I was looking at the wrong bench). I would love to visit that bench with a girl that I'm interested in.
The beauty about this movie is that you can watch it at different age and have different perspectives. I watched it for the first time when I was in high school and felt like Summer was a complete bitch. As years passed, I revisited it and saw all the problems with Tom that I couldn’t have realized back when I was just a teenager. The film grows along with you. Absolutely love that about it.
I loved this movie. I WAS the Tom Hansen character at the time, I literally saw my life in that script. Dark days, but the movie’s ending with Autumn put a big smile on my face.
This film marks a before and after in the relationships of anyone who sees it, very well characterized by the actors, the script was phenomenal with very accurate words, everything is great my favorite movie of all time !!!!
My teacher the other week was playing "please please please let me get what I want" by The Smiths and I imediately thought about the scene where Tom was turning up his speakers as Summer walked by. So Zooey is right when talking about a good soundtrack.
I moved to LA because of this movie. Some poor, young woman was subjected to my projections. What a learning experience! This movie is such a litmus test for maturity. I now see the movie through Summer's eyes.
I love this movie and i never hated Summer. She never lied to Tom. And i love Zooey Deschanel , she's so cute! And, yeah, the soundtrack of the movie is great!
Their relationship perfectly describes attachment styles summer is a fearful avoidant and Tom is a secure attached. I’ve used this movie to explain attachment styles, childhood trauma and the effects on us as adults forming relationships.
Sadly I was guilty of hating summer but I'm glad Zoe rationalized it for me. I was completely lost in Joseph's sugar high that I lost perspective. Bravo to the makers and actors of this film. In the end, Joseph had some pre-stalker moments in the way he was looking at her lol But reality is, don't we all when we think we found the ONE? lol
I recommend this video: "What's the Point of a Doomed Romance? (Part 1)" by Screened to anyone who's really into the movie but still haven't figured it out thoroughly. It might fill a gap or two.
I was walking around my university one night, and I heard a guy and a girl yelling penis, getting louder each time. I think it's amazing that a movie could connect people together in such a dorky way. Definitely a masterpiece.
this interview made me realize how brilliant the film was! zooey talking about the 3 dimensional character, the reality and the his perspective, and also made me understand summer, it all adds up! what a masterpiece. i only watched it once bcos i couldn't take it , i'd be weeping!
I wish JGL was here too but I think that he's shooting a new movie right now (I'm assuming this video was filmed not too long ago). This video just reminded me of my love for 500 Days of Summer. That movie got me through senior year of high school. I think I'll go watch it once this video is done. Lol.
Summer is passive aggressive and Tom is co-dependant. Both are dysfunctional but Summer hurts others,Tom hurts himself. The fact she was reading Dorian Grey when she met her husband at the end is pretty funny and telling.
One of my favorite movies featuring one of my all-time favorite actresses/singers. Great video. LOVE IT. Thank you, Paramount Network, for this great footage.
u know i used to absouletly hate romance movies , books, etc. but as times goes on it becoming one of my fav. genres and this movie really change my mind about them. i will admit i watch it just for mathew gubler but by the end of the movie i was like....wow and now im starting to find a new love of stuff. and i like to think it because of this movie , idk it just taught me things ...def top 10 movies of all time on my list
This movie is fabulous on so many levels. I've watched it dozens of times since it's premiere. You pick up so much watching it over the years 😊 Tom's boss: "this new writing assignment is perfect for you; despair, desperation, nothing to live for..." 😅
Just watched Elf earlier today. as we do every December :) I have always loved her. She def. had something done. Not hating, just noticed. Maybe lip fillers? I am not sure but she is still Gorgeous.
Wow, that's spot on. The first time I watched the movie it was heartbreaking to me! lol I take sad movies really hard. But, after I watched it the second time I actually liked the movie and we were told right from the jump they were not going to end up together.
I think the reason that people root for Tom and hate Summer is that they have that skewed version of love where the other person will change for you and somehow you'll end up being the sole exception to all their rules and patterns. Not only that but they keep expecting people to change their own lives as well.
I barely watched this movie in 2020 and was surprised that they filmed this in downtown. Like I would always stop by the hill and the grande park to get some Starbucks !!. Right on the scene where he starts dancing
@@shogunmickey He says in an interview with Larry King that he felt it was Tom's fault because he wouldn't really listen to summer. But I'm not too sure if that necessarily means he hated his character hahah

*I love this movie as well I watched it 3 year’s ago and it helped me understand the dating world more sometimes we get sucked into this idea that if something doesn’t go our way there is something wrong with that and we become miserable. I have been a Tom when I was 19 & then at 20 I was a summer for a **moment. Now** at 21, I’m just enjoying myself because self discovery & awareness is awesome, fun, and crazy. And I’m dating as well which is also fun and you get to discover more about yourself & another person as well, keeping in mind to always be honest. I think if you get to experience both sides of the stories you’ll see that it’s all in perspective and experience. So go have fun we only got one life*
I loved and hated 500 days of summer so much because I saw so much of myself in Justin. It was as if I was watching myself in him. Falling head over heals over this amazing, beautiful, funny girl to learn that you just weren't her guy and never would be. However that is life, and you eventually learn there is someone who sees you as their person as much as you see them as yours, if not more.
Tom is at fault. Summer only did two things wrong. Invite him to her engagement party without telling him exactly what it was. And going back to his place after he punched the guy at the bar. Because this reinforced his motion to take things further. It gave him hope she was leaning towards a relationship. But yeah. Sometimes we just get temporary moments with special people. ❤️💔
She also says relationships are messy and she doesn't want a relationship, but then ends up married, which is like THE RELATIONSHIP. so I think that by the end, you gotta open your feelings and be vulnerable, because "love" or a relationship should be worth it? ...
You are wrong. People miss the point of this movie by picking sides. Neither is necessarily a bad person, but both of them are selfish. Tom has this dream of meeting his manic pixie dream girl, once she is in his life, everything will be perfect forever, but he doesn't consider the girl's feelings. On the other hand, while Summer, at first says she doesn't want a relationship, she still acts like her girlfriend, and literally, when she is introduced, it is explained that she has always got her way because of her beauty. The first time she opens up to Tom is when he gets angry and confronts her, which is something she is not used to. Later on at the party, once again both of them are wrong, he goes thinking the relationship can pick up once more, thinking its all about him, and she, knowing full well how he is and acts, still invites him, dances with him and falls sleep on him. The movie deals on expectations and reality, and how we cant just get what we want without considering your partner's feelings.
I agree with Zooey on they have chance to get back together. Aside from the great chemistry, both character have grown towards each other over time of separation.
Love this 500 Days of Summer!! And I can't believe it's been 13 years already. To all my fellow 500 Days of Summer fans out there, do you think they should have made 500 Days of Autumn? LOL. For me, Minka Kelly and JGL had a very good chemistry, they should have made one. But on the other hand I think we are 13 years late...
Looking back. I also fell inloved with her character, then ended. Same time when I broke my heart with a woman. Totally related to the movie. Loved it.
I love this movie because it taught me that sometimes you’re not the love of somebody’s life. Sometimes people just come and go and it’s about embracing that and being your authentic self because that’s all you can do.

In the end, Joseph had some pre-stalker moments in the way he was looking at her lol But reality is, don't we all when we think we found the ONE? lol
Please make more of the Josh Horowitz On Location series. Excellent idea.
I loved this movie! It's so real. Captures what people deal with in relationships. I can relate to both characters.
love this movie. Always watch when something is going wrong with my relationship
Enthusiast Game Room I always watch this movie when something is going wrong with my made up relationship lol
I recommend this video: "What's the Point of a Doomed Romance? (Part 1)" by Screened to anyone who's really into the movie but still haven't figured it out thoroughly. It might fill a gap or two.

We want one with Joseph Gordon Levitt
I was walking around my university one night, and I heard a guy and a girl yelling penis, getting louder each time. I think it's amazing that a movie could connect people together in such a dorky way. Definitely a masterpiece.
this interview made me realize how brilliant the film was! zooey talking about the 3 dimensional character, the reality and the his perspective, and also made me understand summer, it all adds up! what a masterpiece. i only watched it once bcos i couldn't take it , i'd be weeping!
Damn, now I gotta watch the movie and being miserable again.
You gotto double down with "Closer" to fully cry yourself to sleep.
You own no one, you are simply sharing a moment together. Remember that. Be present in the NOW.
Have a good life.
She stills looks so pretty. I love the work she's had done on her face. Looks so good.
My love for this movie will never die!
Learned so much from this movie :,)
I love Zooeys personality
I wish JGL was here too but I think that he's shooting a new movie right now (I'm assuming this video was filmed not too long ago).
This video just reminded me of my love for 500 Days of Summer. That movie got me through senior year of high school. I think I'll go watch it once this video is done. Lol.
Summer is passive aggressive and Tom is co-dependant. Both are dysfunctional but Summer hurts others,Tom hurts himself. The fact she was reading Dorian Grey when she met her husband at the end is pretty funny and telling.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time and I actively try to get as many people to watch it as possible.
One of my favorite movies featuring one of my all-time favorite actresses/singers. Great video. LOVE IT. Thank you, Paramount Network, for this great footage.
This made me remember how hard I had a crush on Zoey Deschanel back then.
u know i used to absouletly hate romance movies , books, etc. but as times goes on it becoming one of my fav. genres and this movie really change my mind about them. i will admit i watch it just for mathew gubler but by the end of the movie i was like....wow and now im starting to find a new love of stuff. and i like to think it because of this movie , idk it just taught me things ...def top 10 movies of all time on my list
This movie is fabulous on so many levels. I've watched it dozens of times since it's premiere. You pick up so much watching it over the years 😊
Tom's boss: "this new writing assignment is perfect for you; despair, desperation, nothing to live for..." 😅
Fun fact: the original screenplay had the film take place in San Francisco
This movie put L.A. on the map again
omg I wish! i live in sf and that would be so cool
My favorite movie! 💕
Gorgeous woman, just stunning.
If they ever made a sequel, 5000 days of summer is right there
Just watched Elf earlier today. as we do every December :) I have always loved her. She def. had something done. Not hating, just noticed. Maybe lip fillers? I am not sure but she is still Gorgeous.
Definitely looks like lip fillers
10 years & she still looks beautiful just the way she was In movie ❤❤
Wow, that's spot on. The first time I watched the movie it was heartbreaking to me! lol I take sad movies really hard. But, after I watched it the second time I actually liked the movie and we were told right from the jump they were not going to end up together.
This is great content and exactly what I was looking for when I typed in 500 days of summer haha
After watching the movie 500 days of summer....I have crush on her.❤
I think the reason that people root for Tom and hate Summer is that they have that skewed version of love where the other person will change for you and somehow you'll end up being the sole exception to all their rules and patterns. Not only that but they keep expecting people to change their own lives as well.
500 Days of Summer will always resonate with guys because they have been or probably are in Tom's shoe's when they watch it.
It's great that JGL and Zooey Deschanel are good friends
Zooey Deschanel is such a wonderful human 🥺
500DOS WILL BE THE BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME FOR ME, OF ALL TIME, FOREVER, IMMORTAL
I barely watched this movie in 2020 and was surprised that they filmed this in downtown. Like I would always stop by the hill and the grande park to get some Starbucks !!. Right on the scene where he starts dancing
Joseph Gordon Levitt hates the tom character he played
Why does he hate him?
@@shogunmickey cause of how selfish he is I think
@@alexspurr124 Ahh that makes sense.
@@shogunmickey He says in an interview with Larry King that he felt it was Tom's fault because he wouldn't really listen to summer. But I'm not too sure if that necessarily means he hated his character hahah
he doesnt hate Tom, just saying Tom has his own faults
I love this movie. My favorite romcom. Love how it handle break up and moving on. I blame Tom cause he tried to force in summer into a fantasy.
Was I the only one sure the whole film was set in New York...my life is a lie
Wasn't it meant to be NY? or give that feeling of it? funny how you show a beach, oh its california!, you show a jungle = tropical island, and so on.
Yasmine Belhadj the historic core in DTLA stands in for NYC a lot of the time because from the street level it’s very passable ☺️
i have always loved summer, even if i felt sorry for tom.my sister and i always fight over this. it's not summer's fault if tom fell in love with her.
It is summers fault for being passive aggressive in their relationship. She wasnt honest with him.
@@kyleroberts8823 he chose to be with her, he knew what he was getting himself into, he's an adult who fell in love with someone he hoped would love him back and want the same things as him because he knew that she was just looking for an adventure NOT A SERIOUS RELATIONSHIP, he took a chance and it didn't end well. STOP BLAMING HER FOR A DECISION HE DECIDED TO MAKE ! it's not her fault if he's a hopeless romantic!!
Hahaha, that ending was great. Love Zooey!
So go have fun we only got one life*
Me too
Good movie. Never thought about the two dimensional part of Summer. I met quite a few Summers in my single days.
PLEASE do a 500 Days of Summer soundtrack on vinyl. YES PLEASE
TheLastArkham well said man. I think what you described is the best representation of what the movie was about.
One of the best movies I have ever seen.
I was just thinking about this movie today an this pops up in my feed
God is sending you a message boo
She's perfect. What a dream woman.
summer is my favorite movie character of all time
”On vinyl.“ gurl you are absolutely right!
The way she speaks is just so simple
I agree with Zooey on they have chance to get back together. Aside from the great chemistry, both character have grown towards each other over time of separation.
It was in LA? All this time I thought the setting is in New York.
same
Amour Tagabi yes same
It was always clear it was LA to me because I recognized all the landmarks
@@skatevidcentral Well, as someone who's never been to the USA, I guess I just assumed that it is in New York. Wish I could go there someday tho
But on the other hand I think we are 13 years late...
movies like this give me hope
Loved this movie happened to watch it when I was going through my first breakup
Looking back. I also fell inloved with her character, then ended. Same time when I broke my heart with a woman. Totally related to the movie. Loved it.
man i've played a handful of shows at the redwood bar. never knew it was in this film
This movie is so amazinggggg
I need 11 more minutes of this
I’ll have to rewatch it thank you
