    If I can arrogantly give my own answer to the question of what amenity is most desirable at a charging station: shade. Preferably cover against rain as well. A vacuum and some trash cans would also be really nice, just the chance to spend the time productively when you're off the road letting the family air out and giving the interior a quick clean, and of course there has to be power available if there's a charging station.

    In the unlikely event that your route is going to take you across the stretch of Interstate 80 west of Salt Lake city, I suggest that you take a few minutes to pull off at exit 4 (just before the Nevada border) to visit the Bonneville Salt Flats Speedway. It's an astonishing environment. They won't be racing for another month, but just seeing the expanse of the salt flats is one heck of an experience and very memorable. Then get back in the car and back onto the highway.

    I have the same feeling on people new to public charging, like the ID4 folks.
    Being the only one with an EV in this small ski resort village, each and every time some guest at any hotel had to use the public chargers, the concierge phoned ME!
    Why hotels here didn't install their own EV plug is a mystery to me, but people climbing up here with an EV not checking HOW to use the one and only charger here is even a bigger mystery.

He was alerted when it first started to go thermal, fire department arrived as the first flames appeared. It looks like they got it knocked down pretty quick, so it should be good for GM/LG/NHTSA to analyze.

    On my recent trip I went east on I-90 and back west on I=94 because of the new V3 Superchargers installed in North Dakota. There are several places on I-90 where Tesla only has 4 plugs per spot and they are rapidly becoming crowded. I cut short my charge in Rapid City to let someone else charge and added a stop in Wall SD since I have never been there before despite driving past it for 32 years.
    Due to potential crowding it is worth considering driving at night, except in June that means playing the deer crossing lottery and less places with bathrooms are open. It would be nice if Congress would put some of the 500,000 plugs at highway rest areas. Make them have a Tesla and CCS plug on each, or even a J1772 that everyone can use, although slowly.
    I use a combination of Booking.com, and Hotel Tonight apps and some people also use Priceline to find deals. I usually look for a room along my route at 9-10pm where ever I think I can get to by 11-12pm. It normally works fine to get me a room for $50-100, but on a friday night in western Montana my choices were between a $365 room, or a $750 room two hours away, so I set my alarm at charging stops and took naps the rest of the way home since I can set the HVAC to stay on and keep the temperature

  • @paulashton5990

    nitrogen would be dry. Air would be damp. i.e. contains water vapour. Vapour pressure varies strongly with temperature, so wet air will increase ion temp more than nitrogen filled tyres. Not significant in domestic road use. Matters a lot in F! where a 1 lb difference in pressure makes a big difference in performance.

    • @Graham_Wideman
      @Graham_Wideman 3 роки тому

      I'm thinking that this mixes together two different ideas. There's no reason that ordinary air can't be dry -- that's what a dehumidifier does, though household ones don't do a complete job. So perhaps the idea is that it's easier to fill from a nitrogen tank than to dry ambient air.

      There are a few Superchargers that supply windshield cleaning squeegees like The Fort in Big Timber Montana and the Supercharger in Centralia Washington, but otherwise I got a cheap spray bottle I put windshield wiper fluid in and I have a sponge for removing bugs. They sell them in the RV section at Walmart and other places.
      I wish they all had trash cans, or people would take a few steps to a trash can because I saw dirty diapers thrown in the weeds next to chargers that give me flashbacks to cleaning the parking lots at the grocery store I worked at. I almost hate dirty diapers as much as cigarette butts.

    I suspect that Tesla will change to CCS on their own. CCS will vastly out number SC soon and we'll be zipping in and out while the Tesla's will be queued up. And L2's at hotels, parking spots, etc. will be CCS predominantly because that's what most EV's will be.

    • @smartelectriccar

      Outnumber. Sure. Never once seen a queue and we’ve supercharged hundreds of times in our 2013 Model S. Tesla keeps adding and the locations are outstanding. I don’t care what CCS does or doesn’t do, hope it goes well for other EV owners but as a Tesla owner, charging is not remotely a concern.

      I think Tesla is more likely to give CCS adapters to their clients then change their plug in the US. The only reason they'd change it if it gets standardised I'd think, like what happened in the EU.

    • @ulissedazante5748
      @ulissedazante5748 3 роки тому

      In EU all Tesla superchargers already had CCS plugs - and Tesla cars sold in Europe have CCS-ish sockets.
      They didn't do on their own. They did because they have to, or Tesla can't be sold in EU.
      Now, many are using kind words and persuasion to convince Tesla that, now that the hardware is already the same for every EV in Europe, maybe could be a good idea to open superchargers to not-Tesla cars, perhaps?

    I keep hearing people mention making Tesla cars switch to CCS and I firmly say no! to this. First, Tesla is much more than half of all EV's and the only one that built a charging network. The chargers are built into the price of the car, so I am against devaluing my car.
    I would say you can easily add a Tesla plug to a CCS charger like I think EVGO is doing by getting rid of most of the CHADEMO plugs.
    I would be hugely in favor of co-locating Tesla and other chargers like they are doing in the UK with other services like cafes and coffee, because right now many charging spots of all brands are in a hotel parking lot or somewhere where there may or may not be a convenient bathroom.

      Nikki and Kate don’t mind them, but I find them pretty terrible. Weirdly, I don’t find Mordin (the car Nikki is driving west) to have seats as bad as new Bolts I test drove (we bought Mordin with 35k on it) making me think they got a bit better as they broke in.
      But our Tesla Model 3 is an early model, and its seats are awful too (I’m told they got *much* better in later Model 3s). I don’t know if the revamped Bolt seats fit in the older models, but I do know the newer Model 3 seats would fit our Tesla. I may seriously look into replacing the Tesla seats, but will probably just keep living with the ones in the Bolt, since we don’t road trip it very often compared to the Tesla - Winter

    Standardized charging infrastructure from all car manufacturers, the world over.

      Europe (27 nations) has just agreed to standardise on CCS for the future, even the new/upcoming Nissan EVs will drop ChaDeMo.
      In the UK we have a new supplier of charge points on the motorway network who is well funded with Private and Government finance and intends to replace, and has started on replacing, all of the aging existing chargers with New , mostly CCS. All pay by credit card.

      There should be a standard plug for the Public Charging Networks, that way every manufacturer takes into account that their vehicles MUST be able to charge using that standard plug even if it is with an adapter. That way companies can continue to innovate. Let's say 5 years from now company X develops a way to deliver 400kw to their vehicles using their proprietary network and plug they can just deploy it even if the standard plug can't handle that amount of power.
      I hear many people complaining about how Tesla uses a different plug. The majority if not all of those complaining don't own a Tesla. The people who actually gave Tesla their money by purchasing a Tesla are enjoying what they have for charging. I don't complaint or care what kind of connector Apple uses on their phones because I don't own an iPhone.
      If any car company can develop a plug that is going to make their product better they should do that for their customers but again those cars should also be able to charge using that nation or worldwide standard connector even if it is with an adapter.
      Opening the Supercharger to other brands might be a good idea. In the US Tesla can sell adapter so others could use their Charging Network and make some income to continue deploying more chargers. Also by having other manufactures vehicles charging at their charging stations, Tesla would be showing their dominance (on the charging aspect at least) over other manufactures. Imagine Ford, Nissan, Porsche, Audi.... Owners charging at Tesla Superchargers. I bought a Porsche but I have to go to Tesla to charge. Good advertisement for Tesla while also making more money to continue building more chargers.

      @@BixbyConsequence Sorry , no. a general consideration. The greater the pressure the less road surface contact ie: frriction and thus the better milage. My guess, perhaps 1 - 2 percent overall improvement over "plain" compressed air. For graphic display see venting of pressure reservoir / expelling accumulated water vapour. on compressed air systems. About charging connector standardization, let’s be truthful. In North America, Tesla dominates the EV market so much that it is hard to find ANY non Tesla EV on the road in Florida where I live. It would be so much better for everyone if all EV brands were to standardize on the Tesla charging connector. Start to retrofit the few thousand non Tesla EV’s still on the road, or else provide adapters. Electrify America, ChargePoint, etc are dead ends. Those charging stations are around, but they are empty and frankly useless. They should convert their network to Tesla plugs while they still are in business. Without customers, they will be gone in a few years.

    • @transportevolved
      @transportevolved  3 роки тому +1

      We’re not talking only a few thousand non-Tesla EVs. Just Nissan Leaf and Chevy Bolt sales account for a quarter million cars in the USA. Given the conditions Tesla places on allowing other companies to use its (in my opinion superior) charging standard, it’s unlikely many companies will adopt Tesla connectors, while any company can choose to use CCS without the kinds of contractual limits offered by Tesla. - Winter

    We need to build hydrogen fueling stations outside of California. The last time I drove across the country, we averaged 8 hours and 500 miles a day. If you're using a 60% band on a car with a 230 mile range, that means it's 43 minutes on a 50 KW charger (still the most ubiquitous) and maybe 35 minutes at the Bolt's 55 kWh max charging speed. Let's assume you can do 10 hours of driving a day find one faster charger
    and two slower chargers, charging adds 2 hours a day in travel time, over the course of a 5 day trip, that's 10 hours or basically a day and a half. And that assumes you can find a level two charging station at a hotel, but good luck with that, I mean you're at a fast charger in Quality Inn Parking Lot. On the other hand a Gen 1 Toyota Mirai, which is basically Toyota's version of a Chevy Bolt, were there can travel 260 miles before the fuel light comes on and takes about six minutes to fill once the fuel light is on. In an eight hour day on the road, a Mirai would need to fuel once for a total of six minutes. A Bolt meanwhile would need to charge three times for two hours in the same eight hour day. At the end of the day, the Mirai has gone 513 miles and the Bolt 387, a difference of 126. The Mirai's average speed: 64 mph, the Bolt? 48 mph. And you don't have to worry about heat generated from fueling because the hydrogen is basically frozen. I just don't think that long road trips where you spend 10 hours over 5 days in Wal-Mart, McDonald's and Quality Inn Parking Lots is that appealing to the masses. It's a sacrifice some are willing to make, but I think hydrogen is better for most use cases on road trips. And three years of free charging on level 3 chargers--they'll be lucky to have 90% of its original capacity at the end of the three years.

    I guess no one asked how much you paid to charge at these stations, or you chose not to answer that question. Your reaction about the couple that chose not to get a home charging station, tells me, that it's expensive to use a charging station, so it's not pennies to fill up like all of you keep claiming.
    I have asked the question of everyone on YOU TUBE that touts EV's are cheap to charge "how much it cost to use a charging station", and NO ONE gives an answer.

    • @transportevolved
      @transportevolved  3 роки тому

      It’s like asking “how much is petrol?” There isn’t one answer, as it varies, sometimes dramatically, by region. As a general rule, I find DC fast charging costs a bit more per mile than filling up with gas, but even that’s not always strictly true.
      We’ll be totaling up our charging costs for both the CCS Bolt and the Tesla Model 3 journeys out west in our big video all about the trip that we’ll be making after my husbands and I do our own trip across the country in his Tesla, joining our Bolt, and the TE team, in Oregon. - Winter
      Edit: we’re going to have to look at the charging costs from both a real and an “in most circumstances” perspective, since Nikki and Kate had free Electrify America charging for the first couple of days due to the 4th of July holiday
