It is summertime and the EV road trip vlogs begin again! Over Memorial Day weekend, we took a 600+ mile roundtrip road trip to South Haven, MI. We spent the weekend at Gingerman Raceway with AutoInterests! Our 2019 Chevy Bolt EV handled the trip well, regardless of come hiccups we faced along the way.

Have you been on any fun EV road trips recently?

I did a trip from Tucson, AZ, to Kanab, UT, in my 2020 Bolt in mid-May. Up one day and back home the next. I mainly wanted to try out charging on the road and using various apps such as PlugShare, ChargePoint and ElectrifyAmerica. I made two charging stops on the way to Kanab. The second, in Flagstaff, AZ, was a 90 minute stop, from 11% to 94%, because there are no DCFC between Flagstaff and Kanab, about 205 miles. I made it to Kanab with about 25 miles left of estimated range. Had a nice dinner with my niece and her husband then headed back the next morning. Overall I learned a lot about the range of the Bolt and consumption relative to speed and altitude change. Our highway speed limit is 75 mph and 65 on rural highways. Elevation change was about 6,500 feet climb from Tucson to Flagstaff and about 2,000 feet drop from Flagstaff to Kanab. Returning from Kanab to Flagstaff I stopped at a level 2 charger in Page, AZ for about 45 minutes to add miles to compensate for the climb into Flagstaff. Really had a blast driving the Bolt.

My Pitt and I just completed a 4,000+ mile trip between Idaho and Louisiana. I saw the orange battery status a few times. Lol I figured out how to cross Utah for free! Someday I’ll actually upload some video from the trip.

@@EverydayEV somewhere around 26-29 miles, things go orange and it seems at 10-12 miles it quits showing any miles and just flashes orange with one battery bar. Since I knew I was only 2-5 miles from a supercharger, i was not overly concerned. -unlike when I was in a desolate part of the 4 Corners and saw 10 fewer miles on the Guess-O-Meter than I had to go. Got saved by a miracle that time.
I never did run completely out of charge. I assume there is a little fudge factor past the miles shown on the GOM, but didn’t have to go there. Oh yeah: 2017 Bolt.

Being a camper I know that they sell Y connectors. You plug the top of the wire into each 30 amp outlet and it goes down into the connector so we can get our 240 V. Show instead of a 50 amp you will have a 60 amp out put. My camper requires a 50 amp Power source and I’ve done that before so I can run on 240 not 110.

No carbon monoxide poisoning worries while camping in an EV. But, I’d get out quick if super warm air began emanating from under the back seat of a 2017-19 Bolt!

Did you charge it up to a full 100% before starting? I avoid using heat. Just use seat and steering wheel heat. I get a lot further going 60 - 65 mph and no faster

Could you get a 120V heated blanket for the tent since you’re right beside the outlets?

TT-30 is a weird outlet. It is only 120v instead of 240v like the 14-50. It is not really an “old” style RV outlet, but one made for smaller campers. It seems like a 50 amp 14-50 would be less than twice the amount of power as a 30 amp TT-30, but the 14-50 has two hot leads (120v each in split phase. North America). So while a TT-30 has 3,600 watts available, a 14-50 has 12,000 watts. Of course, for constant loads like EV charging, you need to stick to 80% or less. As far as your Mustart EVSE issues, it probably isn’t designed to work on 120v at all (some EVSEs are dual voltage, some are not). However, even if you had a dual voltage EVSE, it would have charged at the same rate as your Level 1, since it was 120v and the Bolt can’t charge any higher than 12 amps at 120v.

Don’t worry about running out of charge as long as you have Tyler with you. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind pushing the Bolt to the next station.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us. I am curious about your camping setup. I have thought of camping in my Bolt as well. Did you sleep in the back with the seats laid down flat? How did you manage to lay down and remain comfortable? Any suggestions for someone thinking about camping in his?

Don’t buy a Tesla just because you can “afford” the $500 payments....you’ll be in a much worse condition financially then also risk having it repo’d if you can’t “afford” it later....I do the Dave Ramsey plan of paying myself a $500 payment for 5 years and will have over $30,000 saved up! Did the same with my 2019 Bolt EV and paid my car off in 4 months in order to get all the GM discounts.
