- Flashy game show 'Dial it Up' reveals an eerie pattern of knowing your every want. Contemporary consumerism, digital marketing and fake nostalgia. A short film I spent most of this year making, inspired evidently by Wes Anderson's offbeatness and general aesthetic but without the budget to do cool intricate sets, copyrighted music and camera movements. some stills directly recreated from the Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), Moonrise Kingdom (2012) and irrelevant but i dress as Benoit Blanc at one point. Also influenced by Cindy Sherman's Untitled Film Stills (1977-80) that satirized depictions of women in pop culture and media, and Martha Rosland's Semiotics of the Kitchen (1975), a parody of cooking shows. Some Truman show inspo. Also old adverts from the 1970s-80s, game shows and As Seen on TV ads that I used to watch unironically
references to spot: all the contestants are MASH characters. sherman, max (klinger), benny (hawkeye), margaret and i guess i couldnt put BJ bc his name is questionable. minor Starsky and Hutch appearance w/ my maurice and Queen cassettes. theres more im just forgetful. fun times. & the night show thing isnt targeted to anyone specifically i like conan and stephen colbert and uhhh those other white dudes! also Al Pacino cameo
ok genuinely: i worked my lil dumptruck off for this weird mash of stuff and tried to put every media i like from this era into it. i play every character because im self important not because I couldn't find anyone (or that this concept was just so funny im sick of my face now help). editing took out 3 years off my PC, and 30 off my own . i hope i get a decent grade for my visual arts HSC major work !!! please
i really wanted to do something wong kar wai inspired but i was advised against fitting all that in like i did for my previous project Unhand Me: • Unhand Me - student sh...
acting wise: i had two 7-hour shoots, and then another 6 hours for reshoots. costumes? please no more. my hair and green screen dont like to be in the same sentence
editing and camera: i literally have a 400 buck camera that can't shoot proper HD but we made it boys!
animation was difficult because i dont know how to
the formal blah blah statement coursework stuff : Advertising in our digital age is often overlooked in the face of rampant consumerism and degradation of natural, human life. Through the medium of film, I parody this contemporary experience with the recreated nostalgia of 70s, 80s TV programs and commercials, dialing up the continuous presence of advertising. My exposure to game shows and As Seen on TV adverts, combined with the comedic absurdity and cinematography of Wes Anderson, are captured by my film stills depicting various cultural archetypes, inspired by Cindy Sherman. I further satirize the pervasiveness of targeted marketing, urging audiences to re-evaluate their roles in commercialism - where the consumer has become the product for advertisers.

I loved this! Specifically, the colorful animation of "Dial It Up" as well as the 70s commericialism aesthetics were fantastic. Keep up the good work!
thank you!! some of my fav tv shows are from the 70s and i watched tons of old ads for this :)
This is really cool. Nice work
Entertaining... pretty cool student film!! (this appeared in my reccomended out of nowhere)
감사합니다 thank you :)
Chroma key in the late late late night show is a bit too bad, but the script is funny and the delivery bursts with charisma. Well done!
