Years ago I was on an crazy turbulent flight that dropped 2000 feet in a matter of 4 seconds. So I promise you all......you will never crash in a plane due to turbulence. Boeing and Airbus aircrafts are designed to take a bloody beating in the air without a single dent of structural damage being inflicted to any part of the aircraft. So next time you’re in a rough patch, embrace it and understand that you will make it through!! I swear!!

There are so.many crashes where the reason is not known...and may be its because of bad weather only.like the flight MH disappeared.

After years of traveling as a passenger I still can’t get used to turbulence, believe me I know how airplanes work, I know what is turbulence, I’ve heard the “airliners are designed to take that and worst” I’ve heard every pilot say “It’s like when you’re in your car and there’s a bumpy road” yeah, except that there is no bumpy road, you’re at 35,000 feet, the inside of the plane is shaking and rattling and making sharp drops and then someone in the back always lets out a scream, then the flight attendants quickly rush to take their seats or stop meal service, so how is that like a bumpy road? 🤔

The air is so thick at that speed we should think of flying like pushing a toy airplane through jello, its gripped by the air on all sides.

oh my God I feel the exact same way- the only thing that has truly helped is Xanax. I once flew from Thessaloniki to Istanbul and we hit some turbulence that felt moderate from a passenger's point of view (but was probably pretty mild from a pilot's perspective)- not the worst I've ever experienced but above what I would consider average. The two Slovaks next to me were making the sign of the cross and I was, for the first time in my life bouncing along happily and casually offering them this prescription drug like it was chewing gum (they declined before we hit another chop and their prayers continued).

I used to be terrified of turbulence, but I had to fly a lot and thankfully got more accustomed to it. I studied airplanes and decided to fly them myself and realized it's not as bad as we think. I feel it's more we aren't in control of our surroundings and we don't like it. Trust in your pilots and know that they are thinking of you as their top priority!
It doesn't bother me now at all. I used to freak at the slightest bump, but now it doesn't bother me at all.

WolfGrrl lol I also caught that and it was the only thing I remembered from the video. As a pilot and a person that want to make people less afraid of flying don’t mention stuff like that ! Because people will only hear the bad stuff
But never have a plane ever crashed because of turbulence! I’ve been on a few courses for my fear and general airplane knowledge so I’ve learned a few stuff. And that was actually really helpful to know that turbulence has never been a cause of a plane crash.

There are around 100,000 commercial flights in every 24-hour period. Compare that to the number of incidents (of any kind) in a year. It has recently dropped below 100 and has been falling for decades. Airliner wings are certified (yes, certified) to take 154% of the strongest force ever encountered in the atmosphere before buckling. The 100% force is extremely rare and atmospheric conditions where the 100% is likely are normally avoided anyway during flight operations. There are so many rules about exactly where planes are allowed to fly. They have corridors pre-programmed before each flight and different heights are numbered. Even during strong turbulence, pilots are still in complete control and if you looked at the plane from outside, you would not think anything bad was happening. Informing yourself really helps with this. I have been on 39 flights so far around Australia and south-east Asia. My trip in June will take that up to 44. I hope you can overcome that feeling and enjoy travel, which for me has been enriching beyond measure.

Thank you for explaining. I have a genuine phobia of flying, to the point where I was so traumatised about the flights I decided I could never fly again as I didn't enjoy the holidays for fear of the flights.
The fear (for me) is a combination of things. Claustrophobia, turbulence, lack of control and a fear of burning to death in a crash. I've been on flights where turbulence was so violent I thought the plane would break apart and I saw the wings flapping. Now I understand about the wings, thank you. But I'm still never going in a plane again.

Have you tried Xanax? I have similar fears, so much that I’ll think about it a year before vacation.I was on a flight that had moderate turbulence for hours and it completely traumatized me. I now take .75(which is somewhat strong) and it takes the edge off enough not to be panicking, although my body will still go into fight or flight during turbulence. But the fact that I stopped the panicking was huge, and I knew that I could rely on the Xanax on my next flight to get me through and it did. Alcohol doesn’t work for me and neither does a low dose.

This was very helpful up until the end lol. (some extreme turbulence may cause structural damage)
    .... 🙄
We had our plane drop up and down several feet causing us to lift out of our seats and watch drinks slow motion lift out of cups and then fall over everything.. Your heart racing and stomach drops as if you were on a roller coaster. Seat belt light was off, so people were up for bathroom. Made everyone who has never experienced this kind of turbulence feel like the plane was definitely having problems and we were going down.. Scariest part of flying for sure! Everyone was ok and luckily only lasted maybe 1 minute. But this has scared us when it comes to flying.. Our trip back home was way smoother but we were nervous entire time. I have flown over 14x in the past 2 years and only felt this type of turbulence 1 time out of those flights so I can say it's pretty rare to happen again..

I thank Pilot Amireh for this explanation. I am sure he is explaining things accurately and scientifically. But when I am off the ground by 35000 feet or more, I cannot take the turbulence calmly. I know that most turbulence is not dangerous. Still, I don't like it. I have flown many times in my life, so I have experienced severe turbulence on a number of occasions. On these occasions, one or two of the people sitting next to me have helped me through it. These were two older men who acted like my father or grandfather, who held my hand and got me through it. Then again, once during severe turbulence I held the hand and comforted a young man who was flying for the first time and crying for Jesus to take him, the turbulence was that so bad. To everything there is a season.

    From Canada...
Nice, simple presentation that also shows "an air of sympathy" in English. Even though your first Language is one that is very different from English, IMHO you come off very well in English - kudos!
Two things I have seen in videos of turbulent flights that could bhave been better managed:
    1) A passenger falling asleep without his safety belt fastened. He later was awakeneed when he got thrown around by sudden turbulence. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!"
    2) A passenger alpolowing an air hostess to try and serve him in turbulence! Had I been that passenger, I would have told that aoir hostess to look after herown safety first, and let the services go.Her safety is much more important to me than a mere tea, coffee etc.
On one occasion in December, I was returning to Montreal from Logan in boston, in bad weather. Several hous earlier I had landed in heavy turbulence - a mixture of thick snow and a thunderstorm! Had I nort been well strapped in, my head would have gone through the roof of that plane. We also had a lightning strike in final approach, but no fire, no change in the turbulence, no electrical anomalies etc. so let's get on with it! 10 minutes later we landed safely, thank you Delta.
After sevaral hours I was able to board my next flight back to Montreal. As soon as the plane was up, the captain announced that there would be no services on that flight - and for good reason.
About 90 minutes later, having landed at Trudeau International (YUL) the plane taxied off to som spot "in the middle of nowhere" and sat for about 25 minutes.
We were then surrounded by trucks with yellow flashing lights.
By this time rumours were starting about what was wrong. Personally I saw no cause for alarm. No fire, no smoke, nothing truly untoward. "and now we will go into the terminal so everyone can deplane" added the captain.
2 minutes later we are all heading off to go home! Given that Boston is right in the path of the Gulf stream, this kind of stuff is no surprise. but in Montreal, you are much further from the coast, andthe climate is colder, so less likeliniess of thuderstorms but more likeliness of ice.
My best mewmory of that pair of flighrts was the restaurant in logan airport - the best clam chowder you could ever aks for. Expensive at $9 USD a bowl, and very rich, so don't have more than two, so as not to be sick, but YUMMY!!
Unfortunately, I don't think that restaurant is there any more - clamouring for clams!
Finally the captain came on the P.A. and said that "we had just landed on a very icy runway and they were just coming around to check us out."

  • @jenniferkelly5897
    @jenniferkelly5897 5 років тому

I just got back from a holiday in Cyprus last week, it was my first ever time flying and I was so petrified that I would feel physically sick at even just the thought. Not a lot scares me, I watch horror movies with the lights off, read about serial killers, ride on rollercoasters that go at 90mph down a 30ft drop and I even did a freefall abseil off a 120 ft crane, once used for ship building. All of that without once fearing for my life. But when it came to flying, I was so convinced that I wasn't going to make it out alive and I thought of thousands of reasons to stop myself from going. In the end, I went to the doctor and was prescribed diazepam. The day of the flight came and it was chaos at check in which meant that we had to rush through everything and almost missed the flight. I had an anxiety attack after we got through security as my brain had realised that it was going to face it's biggest fear. There was a very nice staff member who took me into a room to calm down, gave me some water and let me take my diazepam, all while giving me the usual 'flying's safer than driving a car' lecture. Because of the rush at check in, my pill never had enough time to kick in and I got up out of my seat, ready to bolt for the door until I was calmed once again. I hated the safety demonstrations and couldn't even watch them without all these horrible images going through my mind. Take off was a scary part for me as I knew I would soon be in the place I didn't want to be but once I was up there and could see outside, I felt a bit more relaxed (more to do with the diazepam.) I even managed to look out the window and take a walk up the plane. Everything was fine until we got to Turkey and were hit by turbulence, I would say it was mild, but for a nervous flyer any turbulence is hell. Coming back was much the same, except I had more time to take my diazepam and let it kick in. We experienced more turbulence again but it lasted for longer this time and I remember looking around at all the other passengers, they all seemed so calm and I wished I could be like them. I think what made it worse for me was that, it was an overnight flight coming home and the lights were off in the cabin to allow people to sleep, I was so envious of those who weren't afraid to close their eyes and fall into a sound sleep. I was knackered and could barely keep my eyes open by the time we did land. Landing is my favourite part because it signals that I've made it to the ground safely and I also quite enjoy the bounce that it does when the wheels hit the ground. (I know, weird how I can be afraid of turbulence but enjoying it bouncing as it comes down.) Sorry this is such a long post but I just wanted to put it out there for the people who're afraid of flying or don't like the turbulence that I get it. I know how you feel. If I could give you any advice to cope with it then the one thing I would say you should do is get on a plane, you don't have to go far, you could just get a quick flight to somewhere close to you, stay a night in a hotel and then come home the next day. I plan to fly to Dublin (a 40 minute flight from where I live) next and then maybe take a few short flights before going international again. It won't happen overnight but I hope I can cure my fear and get onto a plane and relax without freaking out when a bit of turbulence comes our way.

I travel from virgina to Sudan
And I've noticed that it's a smooth flight across the Atlantic until you get to the area of the flight path where the artic is closest and there is littrally 10 seconds of turbulence and smooth again with very minor turbulence

I was on 50% global travel for 10 years. I never liked flying. That job ended. My flights at the end of the run were straight out of a movie. Actually caught a flight attendant in mid air. Sat through 8 hrs of turbulence across the Pacific. People cried coming into Tokyo once.
Frankly I found all these mental exercises exhausting. I took Xanax, did the mental exercises, etc.. you get to your destination and have to talk yourself into the return trip! I just stopped 7 years ago. I either drive, take the train or just pass on some trips.

Thank you so much for telling that turbulence is not scary at all I watched and searched on UA-cam looking at people so scared of extreme turbulence i thinked and when I was on the plane I got really scared and the flight attendant wasn’t scared at all she said that turbulence doesn’t make the plane go upside down it’s like a car bumpy ride and it almost makes me feel proud I felt it like I feel more having a roller coaster so thanks so much for helping me feel better I’m flying out soon tomorrow on Monday dec 20 will be heading to london heathrow and then after that we go to charlotte and then NN so happy flying 😘

I used to be afraid of turbulence until I was on a violently turbulent flight. After that, a pilot friend of mine explained that pilots and airplanes fly in much WORSE turbulence when delivering cargo. That made me feel better.

When I flew a cessena a month ago I experienced turbulence for a few reasons. If you fly over buildings and through clouds they tend to cause updrafts or downdrafts. Cessena wings are not flexible and if I copped the most severe turbulence that would be the end of me.

Great representation of turbulence. I’ve flown a lot of times and there are some areas that are known to be very bumpy. Especially on my way home from Italy, when you hit Ireland, that’s a real trouble spot, and I’ve actually been on a flight that was rough enough for the plane to take several big dips then afterward when we cleared Ireland it was a great ride across the Atlantic .

The part I hate the most is take off. After that, I'm cool. Took me a while to over come the fear of turbulence but it just comes with the ride....so expect it. Also helps thinking when was the last time an airplane fell or crashed due to turbulence? If you have a number, compare it to hundreds of thousands of flights if not more.

If you're afraid of turbulence, just watch air crash investigations. You will see that it's just not possible to simply drop down from the sky, there is not one video recreation of such accident. And once you realize that you cannot control your destiny, that is not up to you to decide when will your last day on this Earth be, you will feel calmer. Stop trying to control everything and just enjoy life as it goes. I flew around 40 times last year, both in commercial airliners, as well as in small private planes and I just love flying...especially the beautiful view we don't get to see very often in our busy, stressful lives.

working in cabin crew manager (emirates) I have learnt ALOT about turbulence. after being in horrible terbulance situations with different airlines that I have worked for it is in fact what we do not know alot about we are scared of and we think the worst about. when I first started my career turbulence was my worst fear because I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT IT REALLY. once you learn honestly turbulence is not that bad

A few weeks ago I was flying on an *Emirates 777 from Dubai to Brussels*. After take off, instead of climbing to cruising altitude, it seemed like we were flying through clouds for a longer time than usual,- at least 1/2 hour after take off. There was also quite a bit of turbulence. Not so much shaking, but rather sudden drops, jumps and swaying left and right sensation... For a fearful flier like myself it was quite unsettling and many passengers were visibly scared.
Why did't the pilots climb above the clouds straight after take off? Were they trying to catch a jet-stream at this particular altitude in order to save fuel??

So if the wing has a lot of flexibility it will smooth out turbulence and take a lot of pressure that must mean the a350is very good at taking the pressure since it’s wing is so flexible it was pointing nearly straight up in an airbus test
