Jarrow was also home to Perth Green Boxing Club Eddie- Ran by the Dean's Family. Brian, Frankie, Tony, Billy, Colin, and Paul all boxed for the club winning many National honours and did well in the professional game as promoters. They ran boxing tournaments from the early 1960's until the late 1990's at the Neon Social Club where I boxed many times. Sadly the Neon is no more it was demolished about 5 years ago. Sadly, only Colin and Paul remain from the famous boxing family. Colin lives in London now and I am still in contact with him.

The Albion closed in 2023 unfortunately due to a fire and hasn't re-opened. Was a decent pub that me, my father and godfather went in one time. Shame it's closed now. Was a nice cosy pub. Great video mate and nice to see you doing videos on South Tyneside. A Hebburn local myself. So been through Jarrow many times so nice to see!

Very happy days it was buzzing then!

Great video Eddie. Lived in Jarrow all my life (36 years) and like a lot of people who live there, I’m proud of my Town. The history is so rich, going back hundreds and hundreds of years. Jarrow was one of the very first places the Vikings raided in the 700s, docking their ships by the Don monastery (St Paul’s Church) and sacking the villages nearby. Funny enough, I believe the raid was unsuccessful with a Viking leader being killed by those defending the land (no surprises there given the stubbornness of Jarrow folk!) Saint Bede, unless I’m mistaken, translated the Bible into English. I could be wrong on that one. But he was iconic for Christianity.

I think I have only been a subscriber for around a year but have seen how much you have progressed. The fact you speak absolute facts, and go off evidence, makes you so good to watch. Patrick stewart spent a lot of his childhood in jarrow steve cram and frank williams (formula 1 racing team owner)are some other jarra lads.
One thing you didnt mention was Irish immigration to jarra.
My great grand farther moved to jarra from cork Ireland to work the shipyards in the early 1900,s with his brothers and caught all the poverty they had left in ireland.
At one time jarra was 80%i Irish i beleive.
My grandad told stories of trouble in the local bars between irish catholics and local protestants but it thanfully died off and became a good community.
When i was at school in jarra late seventies and eighties the classes were filled with people with Irish surnames

That was so interesting Eddy, thanks. I imagine there are hundreds of stories like this from all of the different areas along the river Tyne on both sides, but this is the fist time I have heard in great detail about this march to London. I was up in Jarrow a month or so ago to visit Bede World. For anyone interested in early English history this is a must see. I tried to get a pint in The Oak Tree but it had closed …for good so it would seem from your video. It was good to see an English flag flying from the town hall, which I presume is Labour controlled, this is not something that would be seen in London where the the LGBT+ flag seems to fly from so many civic and public buildings.

Jarrow is a large town sith approx 50,000 folk the town centre is the smallest part , it has huge housing estates and a few more pubs on these estates , also has as many Sunderland fans as Newcastle , a proud tough breed who have been shat on by all governments...

Jarrow had 54 pubs in the town centre, now it has 3. These discovering Tyneside videos concentrate on the town centres, I’m aware of the larger conurbation.
Jarrow is no way 50/50 ish in terms of support. It is vastly NUFC

@@PMS-zv5es I have many followers on my channel from Jarrow who would disagree with you bud. In fact one of the first comments on this video is a lad from Jarrow called Scott (all his life) and he puts it at 90/10 to Newcastle.
I also lived in Hebburn for a few years so I’m quite familiar with the area. We’ll just have to agree to disagree. 👍🏻

As I said, I’m taking this info from Jarrow residents, like yourself, who would fiercely disagree. I’m sure there are quite a few Sunderland fans getting the metro from Fellgate. 👍🏻
I’ll know more when I do a poll in South Shields to see what the fan distribution is.

First place along with York that the vikings invaded and the locals fought them off and killed a few including the leader ...those that were captured stayed in jarrow and married n had children hence why they say viking ancestors...

Ooh I’d beg to differ and a few Jarrow lads on here put it as over 80/20. Neither of us really know as bias can distort reality and common myths become ‘truths’.
I’m going to do a poll on it soon 👍🏻
