- During its annual two-day ‘Defenders of the Sky’ drills, which began on November 2nd, the Iranian Air Force demonstrated the new capabilities of its F-4 Phantom fighter jets due two their integration of new indigenous weaponry. Iran is the world’s largest operator of the F-4, with RF-4, F-4D and F-4E variants in service between them amounting to over 70 jets, which were acquired in the 1970s when Iran was still a close defence partner of the United States under the rule of the Pahlavi Dynasty, reported militarywatchmagazine.com

The United States retired a very capable fighter jet in the F-4 Phantom. For the even more capable F-14 Tomcat, and F-15 Eagle fighters. That doesn't mean that the F-4 Phantom properly maintained and modernized is no real threat! New more efficient/powerful engines, new electronics, improved radar and improved/modern missiles? These were already fighters legendary for their speed, power, and altitude performance.
Only titanium fighters like the Mig-25, and Mig-31 are faster than an F-4 Phantom. This makes the F-4 Phantom one of the world's most deadly combat aircraft. It may not be as maneuverable as an F-15, but the the F-4 was designed for BVR missile engagement. So it remains a very real threat. Even though the design is 60 years old.
All types of true but like in every war ever the greatest weapon is communication, logistics and I'll add technology. If the Iranians can retrofit theirs to have Russian R-77s and be able to have good communication with other jets I can see it being somewhat a threat... not entirely but still something not to scoff at.
Data link and AESA radars is something that US fighters enjoy and I feel has the edge over most opponents. Along with the highest amount of stealth fighters currently.
Being able to see and communicate your opponent before they do will always be better then a bigger bomb or faster aircraft.
@@felixgutierrez993 Lol! You have a lot to learn. Still old fighters like the F-4, are no longer in production. So, it doesn't matter very much. Nobody is too likely to fly, much less upgrade an F-4. Just so, an operational F-4, equipped with higher quality, off the shelf weapons and electronics. Is a threat which should not be underestimated.
@@scottjackson5173 Never said it wasn't but like how in the 80's when F-14s where just popping Mig-21-23's from tens of miles away and the Iraqis where flabbergasted on wtf was shooting them down.
I think what most people mistake on Air craft or Tanks is that they only see the (Armor, weapons and speed) the hard factors. But in actual warfare it's the information the pilot the experience the battle Doctrine and they play off technology nicely.

Because the Abrams had the tech, communication and battle Doctrine to whoop ass and the Iraqis was useing Soviet battle doctrines.

The Phantom II is my favorite aircraft so I’m conflicted about the Iranian Air Force flying them. The Iranian defense establishment is actually quite good at keeping these 3rd gen fighters flying, but they would be easy prey for AMRAM missiles on US F-22, F-15 & F-16 aircraft. I don’t know what long range ordinance the Iranians have developed but our array of sensors & AESA radars should be able to pick up their IFF traffic many miles before their radars could see us.
The real threat of the F-4 is not in air to air combat against modern US fighters. It's the F-4s speed,allowing it to dash out over the Persian
Gulf and impart a lot of kinetic energy to an anti-ship missile it launches at an oil tanker before turning for home, and hitting the afterbuners to get
back under the cover of Iranian air defense missiles.
It's an anti ship missile truck whose survivability lies in using it's speed to not be intercepted while using hit and run tactics.
Getting into a turning dogfight against 4th or 5th generation US fighters, would be a quick and certain death for an Iranian F-4.

I don't think Iran's F4s are capable of fighting against the upgraded F4s that Turkey Greece and South Korea are still flying.
The reason why Germany upgraded its phantoms was because the Eurofighter was delayed for too long.

We shared F16s technology with China and made a copy JF17 which is a copy of F16s. Turkey and Pakistan are cooperate into defenc industry.
