  • The camera gear I use for Bird and wildlife photography continues to grow. I have accumulated quite a lot of gear over the last year. However, I use nearly all of it.
Bird photography gear is a lot. But add in Video and sound equipment...I think this might be too much!
Hunt's Photography is my go to shop for camera equipment.
If you are interested in any of the equipment I use, check out this link to Hunt's Photo and video.

No gear was supplied to me for this video.

Another great video, Josh. I enjoy the crisp, concise delivery and how you stated this is "what works for your workflow". It's incredible the amount of stuff that we accumulate to put ourselves out there. I, too, like photographing birds on my birding trips to other countries. It helps me to remember the trip, the places, the number of species as the totals keep going up. I'll probably never have a UA-cam channel because I wouldn't feel as comfortable in front of the camera. You have a great, honest, natural presentation, so keep up the great work.

I feel the same way about being uncomfortable in front of the camera. It’s been a process. My issue is being very critical of myself- how I look, how I sound, etc. I’m trying to let that go and just stop worrying about it. Easier said than done! 😊

Yes, everyone loves gear :) I considered the Nikkor 20mm f1.8 S, but instead opted for the Nikkor 14-24mm f2.8 S (I also have the 14-30); as a old large format photographer I have an affinity for prime lenses (I love the Nikkor 85mm f1.8, but hardly ever use it). I only own Nikkor Z mount lenses., and shoot on a first generation Nikon Z 7. Several months ago, I started using the Fuji GFX100S, which is a monster camera - very heavy - but the lenses are simply wonderful. Who knows where I'll go next... LOL.

In cycling there’s a formula, expressed two ways, to determine how many bicycles you should own: "N+1", where N = the number of bikes you currently own or "S minus 1” where S = the number of bikes owned that would cause your spouse to leave you. I expect there’s a direct corollary with camera bodies and lenses too 😆. At the risk of a full geek-out and with apologies to "Mama Bayou", I would welcome more future comments on the mic and sound logistics. So true about the sound quality. For me content still rules the day but paired with good production qualities just makes it so much more enjoyable. Thanks Josh.

Hey Josh, great video. I agree about having good audio. I to have a H6 and have been trying to improve my audio but I find there is so much noise pollution from cars, planes and people. I also find having to much gear is a pain in the ass! I will be curious how you pack your and Katie's gear for trips in the new truck. . I always look forward to your videos! Greg

Yeah Greg. You are really hitting on something that has been driving me nuts. Noise pollution is so frustrating. I should have highlighted the truck and SUV a little more. because most of my equipment just gets thrown in to the backseat. You know how it is.

I know it all depends on what your doing with the equipment but to be honest I see very little difference in the quality of your videos and those taken with the newer Gopros. This has nothing to do with the content, strictly the final result. I don't believe the average viewer could tell the difference between which gear filmed a video. Again the method of viewing contributis to the viewer experience. I enjoy your videos and the stories you provide with them. Please keep up the good work.

It's great you have so many upcoming trips lined up this year I know you and Katie will come home to share some great videos with the rest of us. I would luv to get myself out there for a trip but have spent way too much this year on gear and just ordered a new computer to boot, maybe next year. It has been real slow subject wise in SC the last 3-4 weeks, between temperature shifts to the nesting season approaching bird sightings have been few and far between. Today however a non documented event occurred that blew away myself and two friends walking in the woods, we spotted a Male Cardinal on the ground minding its own business and literally in the time it would take you to blink your eyes 3 times what appeared to be a Red Tailed Hawk came out of nowhere grabbed the cardinal and flew off deep in the woods with the poor cardinal vocalizing as loud as possible knowing it was someones lunch. We were only 15' away I would guess and just stood their with out mouths open and amazed by what we saw, never had a chance to get a shot. Take care - Jeff

Bayou Josh, I just found your channel. WOW is all I can say. You have much the same philosophy of photography that I do. I’d love to get your advice. I’m in the process of upgrading my gear. I have a very old Nikon D5000 with a Tamron 16-300mm lens. Neither one of these works for me anymore. They are not capable of capturing the quality of images that I want. They can get good images but not what I would call great images. I have been struggling to determine which mirrorless (or DSLR) Nikon to upgrade to (yes I want to stick with Nikon). I’m leaning heavily toward a Nikon z7ii and looking at the Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 or the Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3. Quality of image, Portability and Budget are the biggest factors for me, with budget being the breaking point. This particular combo would be at my high end budget wise. I’m going to be doing quite a bit of travel (Alaska, switzerland, italy, etc.) over the next year or two and my focus is primarily wildlife and landscapes. Do you feel what I am looking at would be a good fit for what I’m wanting to do or do you have another suggestion.
