  • String theorist Samir Mathur has been working for years to resolve the apparent violation of conservation of information that arises from the quantum nature of black holes. He has developed a radical solution to the so-called information paradox.
This lecture was recorded on May 31, 2015, at the World Science Festival in New York City.

26:35 But aren't we adding negative energy to the strings...as it is within the event horizon...so shouldn't the string size contract?

No. Once it enters the event horizon it has no more energy to shed while being forced to reflect any energy it encounters. Some would say it becomes "out of phase".

I wonder if Hawking radiation really makes a difference...considering how much stuff will always fall into a black hole.

I feel it would certainly make a difference. The black hole has until the heat death of the universe to emit, as hawking radiation, every bit of information and mass it ever absorbed. In fact the heat death, by definition, will be postponed until every black hole in the universe evaporates. There's enough time no matter how slowly it happens.

Yes, this gentleman nearly speaks it as well.

It's irritating that everyone thinks it's cute to talk about "guys" when they are referring to something for which there is a more linguistically responsible signifier.
