    ★ Why should you learn to read Thai?
    1. Master the Real Sounds of Thai
    The biggest advantage you get when you can read Thai is you will be able master your Thai pronunciation.
    Roman alphabet based languages don’t cover all the sounds in Thailanguage, especially when it comes to both distinguishing vowel length and mastering those ever-tricky tones. Learning Thai pronunciation by understand how to read is the best way to master all the real Thai sounds and makes it less likely that you will develop bad habits when you speak.
    2. Unlimited Opportunity to Expand your Thai vocabulary
    You can start learning new words by reading and using a dictionary by yourself. No more asking your Thai friend “what does the sign say?”
    Being able to read also helps a great deal to memories new words.
    3. Immerse Yourself in Real Thai Life
    Imagine yourself being able to read street signs, food menu, or even Thai newspapers or your Thai friends’ posts on their social media. You will be able to understand the real Thainess by reading materials available around you in everyday life.

    It may sound daunting to have 44 consonants in three classes, plus 18 vowels but take heart, there are 52 letters in English, 26 times two cases. (Admittedly, the cases don’t affect the pronunciation.)
    Also, just like in Thai, the 5 (or 6 if you count Y) single vowels are combines into many, many diphthongs and triphthongs.

    • @ellefsensbarmyarmy8491
      @ellefsensbarmyarmy8491 3 роки тому +2

      44 letters, but only 21 consonant sounds.
      And, unlike English and many other languages, thai vowels are always pronounced in the same way.
      There’s many ways to pronounce “a” depending on the word, but only one way to pronounce “า”.

    • @gaemlinsidoharthi
      @gaemlinsidoharthi 3 роки тому

      @@ellefsensbarmyarmy8491 : Comes from using a foreign (Latin mostly) set of characters to represent the language, I suppose. Not to mention where pronunciation has drifted from what was originally spelled (all the “gh” words spring to mind).
      Still, there are ways which give how combinations of the characters are used to represent the various sounds even if they are almost unrecognisable amongst all the foreign spellings and exceptions.
      Better than using hieroglyphs at least. 🙂

      Transliteration of thai into Latin alphabet doesn’t really work.
      Learning thai script is the only way to learn tones and pronunciation etc. It’s still hard to get the tones and pronunciation right, but at least it possible to understand it.
      Thai script looks strange in the beginning, but it’s not that hard. Most people will figure it out within 2-3 weeks if they spend an hour a day working on it

    I really want to know the rules to knowing which 'dt' or 'd' letter to use to make a specific word. It's not like you can write 'dee' (good) with daw-cha-daa, right? You have to use daw-dek. They're not used interchangeably. That's probably the most confusing part for me.

    I can’t wrap my head around why there are six different Thai symbols that make the t sound. Other symbols are similar. I can pronounce them all by looking at flash cards but. It will take some time to figure out what symbols sound like which Roman letter. Also consonants make different sounds if they are at the beginning of the word compared to the end. This is extremely confusing and not necessary if you ask me. I don’t think I will ever figure out how to read Thai.

    Would love to learn but that is so difficult 🤕. The problem is the times of your classes aren't conducive to European times. Do you have lessons that are geared towards Europe time zones ?.

    I am able to slowly form words by combining a consonant with a vowel. But my problem is, after combining them to form a word, how do I know what that word means?
    Like in 10:10 Kru Mod made the word "Crow". But I don't even know what that word means if she didn't mention it.

      She said crow... that's english... it's the black bird you see on the picture the thai word is gaa

      You need to learn the meaning of the words along with learning to read, perhaps using a dictionary or if you can already speak some Thai then you can learn to spell the words you already knew. Take your time, and keep practicing. :)
