Ben and Ernie Start a Wishfarm

- Ben and Ernie discuss what things made their "wish farm" list, that is, the purchases they have specifically outlined in their budget, but haven't (necessarily) funded yet. The goal with the wish farm is to put pen to paper on things you really want to save for, and see if those desires are still there in the future when you can start to allocate dollars to them. Often the process of simply writing down the things you want can help you achieve clarity around your goals and the dollars you will give to your jobs.

On any big expenses that may take 6 months or more I always add 10% buffer to account for any increase in cost
🤣🤣🤣 omg!!!! the bloopers at the end are EVERYTHING!!! 🤣🤣 I'm dying!!!!!
Ben, from a 74yro who has lived in many homes with lots of different refrigerators: that refrigerator is for sure damaging your floor, increasing your utilities costs, and hurting the environment. It's penny wise and pound foolish not to replace it with a newer, more efficient model. Just do it.
Ben, for the love of all that is holy, buy the fridge. I'm giving you permission to buy the fridge! 😆
LOL! I will totally buy the fridge! ...eventually. ~BenB
🤣🤣
@@YNABofficial Ben, did you ever buy the fridge? We are saving for one now. lol
Spoiler alert! He did it a few weeks or months ago. It was a whole thing. Might be fun for you to find the video(s) that include the story.
I needed to leave a job due to my health in February. I just got my first paycheck from my new, much better position today! Thanks YNAB for showing me that I had time and didn't need to rush the job search until I recovered. :) Sending you good job energy as well. ✨
That I Love Lucy reference is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This also has inspired me to build my wish farm
My wishlist (mostly big items because my extra $ is going to pay off some small credit card debt!): Man (woman?) Cave in my unfinished basement, a new patio/deck so I can enjoy my backyard with privacy, and a fence for my yard so my doggo can run around to his hearts desire!
I'm saving for:
1. A down payment for a new (to me) car
2, a new ergonomic desk chair
3. A road trip to visit my brother and his hubby!
Loved this video. ❤️
Ps: please 🙏 buy the fridge!!
I love to have my wishlist. Also use the "small" items to supplement when people ask what I want for Christmas or my birthday. I also have a category called "dead" where wishlist items I have completed or budget categories I no longer need move to so I can ignore them until I get to a fresh start.
I love that Maria is an F1 fan. That made me so happy!! To answer ya'lls question about the paddock, you can get a "Paddock Pass" which gives you "private access to the circuit and the Formula One Paddock Club. Prime viewing from above the pit lane and team garages, looking over the start/finish line, with free grandstand seating available as well. All day Open bar serving Champagne, fine wines, beers, soft drinks, tea & coffee." It's kind of like a backstage pass at a concert but for an F1 race.
Thanks for the info! That definitely sounds like a perfect Wish List item for any F1 fan! ~Ernie
One note on the Vitamix. I wanted one too and then choose to buy a Ninja instead. It is also a high-speed blender and it makes pretty amazing smoothies for I think a third of the cost. The only disadvantage is that it is a little bit louder than the Vitamix.
As a European who likes to cook American recipes, there are online converters for all ingredients, which is a bit of upfront work. More and more recipes now come with both volume and weight measurements.
Thanks for the tips, my friend! ~BenB
Vitamix sells refurbished blenders! Great prices! I love to safe money by buying refurbished. Got my fancy BOSE headphones and Apple laptop refurbished. Do it!
I'm really happy with my Ninja Foodi Hot and Cold Blender. It makes soup! Seriously, dump in the ingredients, hit the SOUP button and a half hour later you have hot soup! I'm glad I got that instead.
We’re saving the contribution towards our children’s weddings and my next car.
It took me about 10 years to seriously pull the trigger on a Vitamix. That was about 7 years ago. I love it! It’s that good. Don’t want to be without one now.
The bloopers are fantastic!!
vitameatavegamin! 😂Love that episode!
Glad I'm not alone! haha ~BenB
I can't stop laughing at "Welcome back to the show Nerd" 🤣
I have no other use for loan accounts in YNAB except to payoff my mortgages. So what I do is create a loan account for each item on my wish farm. Each supposed "loan payment" is deposited to my investment account that pays dividend. Every dividend payout I receive is then used to snowball each item in my wishlist. Once each item is fully funded, I redeem that said money from my investment account. Its kind of fun watching those loan accounts as they decreases and goes to zero :D
I have been wanting to start my wish farm for a while now. I don't have a lot of extra income at the end of budgeting as I am snowball methoding my debts currently.
But my idea was to have the 3 categories (small, medium and large) and then use the memo spot to keep track of my wish list and have the wish list separated by size as well.
Love the show guys!
Thanks Cathal! ~Ernie
I love that the caption says "both guffawing" during the outtakes!
I’ve recently created a “Wish Farm” category in our budget and it’s been a game changer for intentional spending. But i don’t limit what’s in there. In fact, we put separate line items for anything we’re thinking of buying that isn’t an absolute need (which means that sometimes there’s A LOT of line items 😂) So there’s everything from a $30 kitchen knife to a $200 course to a $25000 garage. This wish farm category makes sure that we can quickly reference where our trade offs are (ex: when I see a pretty Christmas wreath at target for $40, I open up my app and look at the list of all the other things I’d like to buy, many of which I would have forgotten in the moment). Over time there are plenty of things that get deleted without being purchased as we decide that it’s not really that important. And for purchases like that kitchen knife, I absorb it into another more regularly used category (Kitchen Items) after the purchase so I don’t have a single use category floating around after. Anyways, as an 8-year user, I thought I had already figured out the most effective way to use YNAB for my household, but turns out I was missing out on some useful strategies!
Buy that refrig because your hair starts turning gray. Love you- guys! 😻
Outdoor furniture, so we can hang out in the sunshine. It is going to take ages though, so I might have to think up a smaller goal so we can have some success in the meantime.
That's the beauty of the wish farm idea! Always save for something small so you can keep getting wins, but also something big so the small stuff doesn't take all the money. :) ~BenB
Oh my gosh thank you so much for the laughing outtakes, I really needed a good laugh tonight!! 💘
Aw, you're very welcome. A good belly laugh is good for the soul! ~BenB
You should be proud of traveling with just a backpack! ❤
Love that I Love Lucy episode!!! Knew exactly what you meant before you explained it! And SKOL!!!!
Melissa, this is our season! ~Ernie
Thank you, Melissa! I felt like it totally flopped when Ernie didn't know what I meant! 🤣 ~BenB
@Ben, usually the nutrition facts on a package list one serving's volume and the weight in grams in parentheses. A serving size is usually easy to convert into what you need with some simple math.
"I'm 50-55+...." I love that!!!! What I like about this episode is how to Wish Farm for younger and those that are 50-55+ LOL
The out takes at the end cracked me up lol
Replacements / appliances category Ben!!
So I’m totally here for the budget stuff. But I’d love to hear more about over-seeding ! I am in the first year of homeownership and would love to get my lawn in tip top shape. 😂
Same question! Ernie - do a mini-episode imparting your lawn nerd wisdom.
We started using Sunday Lawn Care, and highly recommend it! They have great articles there too on how to overseed
I love the bloopers 😂😂😂😂😂
Brit watching here! There's loads of online calculators to convert from US recipe measurements to imperial measurements. Or easier hack - buy some British cookbooks!
Also BBC Good Food website has some really great recipes.
@Ben I've been baking and cooking with my food scale in the US with the help of my Amazon Echo - any smart home device or even your phone would work. I typically measure in grams and just ask Alexa while I bake questions like "how many grams is 1/2 cup of olive oil," etc. Hands free and don't need to reference a converter with dirty hands.
Ben: You could call non-monthly expenses "variable frequency expenses" for a fancier name. 😅
So fancy! 🤵
Vita-meata-vegamin!! I think thats the Lucille Ball supplement 😂 came on here to say this and realised im late to the party haha
Look into briggs and riley luggage - it CAN be once in a while available for Costco on line - my sister has a set of three - different colors and styles EXPENSIVE but last a life time - glenda (color is important like 80 % of bags lost are BLACK - so I avoid that
Thanks for the tips William! ~Ernie
the bloopers!!
Maybe a tablecloth would be a good first step in the epoxy dining table debacle? 😂
Sweden also uses alot of volume measurements :D
The message tip is the goat. I get free laser hair removal because I let students practice on me lol. You just never know what you can get for free!
To convert use British sites to get the recipes.
Ernie - what’s the model of the lawn-leveling tool?
It's the Landzie one! I'll be using it for a much bigger leveling project this week, and I'm sure I'll be thankful I have it! ~Ernie
Vitameatavegin!!!
Welcome back NERD 😂
VITA-VITA-VEGEAMIN
Wow, I was expecting someone else to have mentioned this... Lol
