  • Ben and Ernie discuss what things made their "wish farm" list, that is, the purchases they have specifically outlined in their budget, but haven't (necessarily) funded yet. The goal with the wish farm is to put pen to paper on things you really want to save for, and see if those desires are still there in the future when you can start to allocate dollars to them. Often the process of simply writing down the things you want can help you achieve clarity around your goals and the dollars you will give to your jobs.

On any big expenses that may take 6 months or more I always add 10% buffer to account for any increase in cost

Ben, from a 74yro who has lived in many homes with lots of different refrigerators: that refrigerator is for sure damaging your floor, increasing your utilities costs, and hurting the environment. It's penny wise and pound foolish not to replace it with a newer, more efficient model. Just do it.

I needed to leave a job due to my health in February. I just got my first paycheck from my new, much better position today! Thanks YNAB for showing me that I had time and didn't need to rush the job search until I recovered. :) Sending you good job energy as well. ✨

My wishlist (mostly big items because my extra $ is going to pay off some small credit card debt!): Man (woman?) Cave in my unfinished basement, a new patio/deck so I can enjoy my backyard with privacy, and a fence for my yard so my doggo can run around to his hearts desire!

    I'm saving for:
    1. A down payment for a new (to me) car
2, a new ergonomic desk chair
    3. A road trip to visit my brother and his hubby!
    Loved this video. ❤️
Ps: please 🙏 buy the fridge!!

I love to have my wishlist. Also use the "small" items to supplement when people ask what I want for Christmas or my birthday. I also have a category called "dead" where wishlist items I have completed or budget categories I no longer need move to so I can ignore them until I get to a fresh start.

I love that Maria is an F1 fan. That made me so happy!! To answer ya'lls question about the paddock, you can get a "Paddock Pass" which gives you "private access to the circuit and the Formula One Paddock Club. Prime viewing from above the pit lane and team garages, looking over the start/finish line, with free grandstand seating available as well. All day Open bar serving Champagne, fine wines, beers, soft drinks, tea & coffee." It's kind of like a backstage pass at a concert but for an F1 race.

One note on the Vitamix. I wanted one too and then choose to buy a Ninja instead. It is also a high-speed blender and it makes pretty amazing smoothies for I think a third of the cost. The only disadvantage is that it is a little bit louder than the Vitamix.
As a European who likes to cook American recipes, there are online converters for all ingredients, which is a bit of upfront work. More and more recipes now come with both volume and weight measurements.

I have no other use for loan accounts in YNAB except to payoff my mortgages. So what I do is create a loan account for each item on my wish farm. Each supposed "loan payment" is deposited to my investment account that pays dividend. Every dividend payout I receive is then used to snowball each item in my wishlist. Once each item is fully funded, I redeem that said money from my investment account. Its kind of fun watching those loan accounts as they decreases and goes to zero :D

I have been wanting to start my wish farm for a while now. I don't have a lot of extra income at the end of budgeting as I am snowball methoding my debts currently.
But my idea was to have the 3 categories (small, medium and large) and then use the memo spot to keep track of my wish list and have the wish list separated by size as well.

I’ve recently created a “Wish Farm” category in our budget and it’s been a game changer for intentional spending. But i don’t limit what’s in there. In fact, we put separate line items for anything we’re thinking of buying that isn’t an absolute need (which means that sometimes there’s A LOT of line items 😂) So there’s everything from a $30 kitchen knife to a $200 course to a $25000 garage. This wish farm category makes sure that we can quickly reference where our trade offs are (ex: when I see a pretty Christmas wreath at target for $40, I open up my app and look at the list of all the other things I’d like to buy, many of which I would have forgotten in the moment). Over time there are plenty of things that get deleted without being purchased as we decide that it’s not really that important. And for purchases like that kitchen knife, I absorb it into another more regularly used category (Kitchen Items) after the purchase so I don’t have a single use category floating around after. Anyways, as an 8-year user, I thought I had already figured out the most effective way to use YNAB for my household, but turns out I was missing out on some useful strategies!

@Ben, usually the nutrition facts on a package list one serving's volume and the weight in grams in parentheses. A serving size is usually easy to convert into what you need with some simple math.

Brit watching here! There's loads of online calculators to convert from US recipe measurements to imperial measurements. Or easier hack - buy some British cookbooks!
Also BBC Good Food website has some really great recipes.

@Ben I've been baking and cooking with my food scale in the US with the help of my Amazon Echo - any smart home device or even your phone would work. I typically measure in grams and just ask Alexa while I bake questions like "how many grams is 1/2 cup of olive oil," etc. Hands free and don't need to reference a converter with dirty hands.
