Y’all hired the right person for this job. The’s videos are _great_, and this woman is doing a great job with them. Like, who would have thought I’d subscribe to a budgeting channel lol
We registered for the Eufy 11S on Amazon! It seems to have some pretty kick booty reviews and is a third of the cost of the Roomba brand. So far, it's been great! It's pretty smart, it's gotten itself unstuck plenty of times, and I didn't realize how many different features and settings it has! I will say it's not perfect, but Julep is constantly shedding and it helps with the upkeep quite a bit. I'm excited to use it on the brand new carpet in Mac's and my new apartment in a few weeks after the wedding; if we can keep up with her hair from the beginning, we'll be much better off!! -Hannah 🌻
@@YNABofficial I saw that one because I have the Eufy doorbell. When my Roomba dies or my pup kills it. First dog I have ever had that "plays" with Roomba. I will get a Eufy! Thanks for your recommendation.
Awesome video, Hannah! I wish the wish farm were a feature of YNAB. The process of creating categories, then deleting could be automatized by a new feature. Just an idea...
I always have to come back and reference these videos bc I always forget how to handle it after I am able to purchase the wish and need to move it out lol
I love the idea of having a wish farm but always wondered what to do with the goals after because I didn't want to hide a million goals lol! Thank you! :)
This has changed the way I budget so much! Almost always when I overspent, it was in my “🎉Treat Yo’self” category and I covered it with “😳Stuff I Forgot To Budget For”, but that didn’t encourage me to curb impulse spending. (And yeah, I know I wasn’t using the category correctly but it felt like “free” money just lying around and was too tempting.) So I got rid of Stuff I Forgot entirely and put that money into my wish farm instead. Now either way, the money is being used for a treat, so I don’t feel deprived, but I have more clarity about what my choice is when I’m considering a purchase. Do I want to dip into my money for a gaming laptop just to get a couple of coffee mugs? Usually no. And if I really did forget to budget for a necessity, I still have extra I can pull from without too much hassle.
Still new to YNAB, but absolutely love it so far. Unfortunately for me, paying off debts are my wish farm, lol. But I do love this idea, and it's one more incentive to buckle down and become debt free.
Ahh!! I've been where you're at! In fact, I'm back where you're out. Just got married, so we had to map out a new financial plan and the wish farm is going on hold while we reprioritize toward debt. You got this!! You're not alone! -Hannah 🌻

So, about Hannah needing a "plant hobby category", I have in addition to a "wish farm" a "hobby farm" for hobbies that need supplies purchased more frequently than the one-off items in the wish farm, but still do not have to happen every month. Because when I was trying to buy all those things out of my fun money category, I was finding that I never saved up for activities outside of the house (like socializing with friends and family). My hobby farm categories get a bit of planned funding assigned to them each month and then at the end of the month I look at things like my grocery category and if I have any funds left over I can choose to send it to a hobby farm category or a wish farm category. I find that having the hobby categories in the "hobby farm" makes it even more fun and inspiring than if they were sitting elsewhere in my budget category groups. So by having an orchid plant hobby category, I have funds saved for occasional supplies like new potting medium, fertilizer, etc. to take care of the orchids I already have, but I can also save in that category to buy a new orchid plant.
I wasn't interested in the Wish Farm before this video. Now I'm excited to make my list ☺️ Maybe it will help to curb my "miscellaneous" category spending habit lol.
I stopped YNAB-ing for months because of financial difficulties (there were sudden expenses that required me to cut off things, YNAB was unfortunately one of them 🥺), but as things settled down I think I am ready to restart. I'm glad I found this new video about wish farm, that makes me excited about budgeting again! I had my wish farm previously, but I didn't realize I could just delete the wish farm category once it's completed and automatically assign then to the proper category; I used to transfer the money from my wish farm category to the proper category and deleting it manually. Super excited to go back to YNAB! Thank you for this fresh explanation Hannah!
Oh my gosh, YAY! I'm so glad!! Life happens and sometimes we gotta reevaluate and redirect. So happy the Wish Farm idea is encouraging and motivating! Best of luck to you getting back into the flow of farmin' and budgetin'! -Hannah 🌻
Fun Video. Something I did recently is treat the “Wish Farm” kind of items a bit like the “Profits First” principal. By allocating 1% to wishes to initially, I can always make progress. As other priorities are addressed, I can slowly increase the percentage assigned to Wishes.
I'm loving these videos. Just got started with YNAB a couple days ago (still on the trial) and trying to figure it out. But so far I am getting HOOKED! Loaded my entire budget, turned on auto-feeds from my cards and banks and trying to make sure i don't miss anything. The one thing that I always missed before on other budgeting apps was the TRUE EXPENSES. The ones that come up only every 6 months or 12 months. Those just slip up on you and smack you across the head! But if you plan them out in YNAB, they won't! My biggest priority now is paying off debt. I've traditionally been behind the 8 ball and ended up short every month, but after listing everything in YNAB, it looks like I actually have money left over! WHAT? How did that happen?! It's magic! I think? Thanks again for the great video and I'll definitely put this to work!
Bob! This sounds AWESOME!! So encouraging!! YNAB kind gamifies the whole budgeting/saving experience, doesn't it? Anytime an expense catches me off guard, I immediately go and add it to my budget. The biggest one I FINALLY added this year was creating a category to save up for TurboTax. Every April I get hit with a $99 fee I wasn't expecting when filing my taxes, but NOT THIS YEAR! Do you mind if I share this as a YNAB Win in one of my future videos?! I LOVE that you have money leftover when you thought you wouldn't have any. Budgets are dope, man. -Hannah🌻
I have an Excel with everything I want. Writing things down instead of buying right away, means I buy the things that bring me the most joy instead of just the first thing that came into my mind. However, I only allow to plant wishes that I at least wanted at three different occasions. This cut back on buyers remorse a lot.
Ooh, that's a good technique! I want a lot of things on a whim 🤪 It would probably be good to tack some guidelines onto what makes the list and what doesn't. -Hannah 🌻
Hahaha, I have an excel sheet where I evaluate each item based on many categories to evaluate if it brings positivity to my life. Kind of the same effect.
I've had a Wish Farm in my YNAB ever since your video last year on Wish Farming. I bought a few medium and big ticket items with that plan. Can't wait to watch this video today! As I complete them I move the items to a funded category and then move a new S-M-L item from my Wish List up to the Wish Farm.
Very helpful! Love how a wish list and wish farm can keep budgets from seeming devoid of fun and whim. Also, you must be an Aldi shopper! I recognize that cheese from my fridge 😂
Oh, you BETCHA, I'm an aldi shopper. It's almost mind blowing how much you can save buying the exact same things from Aldi instead of other bigger stores. -Hannah 🌻
Great video! Question - do you have any tips for using the Wish List and Wish Farm with a partner? Maybe his and hers wish lists and wish farms...then any extra money that comes in gets split 50/50 to each farm?
Great question! I've never shared a wish farm with a parter! You could adjust the structure of it: he gets one small wish, you get one small wish, and you both add one large wish you both want together. As far as where the money is coming from that you contribute to the wish farm, that's up to you! If you have a joint bank account, you can split money equal ways among the wishes, or if you have separate bank accounts you can each contribute to your own wishes individually, and both pitch in equal amounts on the large wish together. Experiment with it and let me know how it goes!! I'm curious to hear! -Hannah 🌻
Hannah, lovely and beaming with wit as always. Wish Farm is great. New to farming so I needed more explanation on how to progress the transaction after buying the WF item. Went back to your first Start A Wish Farm vid. You explained and showed in more detail how that happens on the computer. :-)
Hey J! A lot has changed with the YNAB budget since that first Wish Farming video, so this new video includes everything you should need to know to purchase a wish farm item! But definitely let me know if there are questions you still have! I'll try to give you my best shot at answering them :) -Hannah 🌻
I love the wish farm. It has prevented me from so many frivolous purchases. Hannah, any chance you’re planning a “fresh start” video? I’ve been budgeting for almost a year and am wondering whether that’s a good plan…
We registered for a Eufy 11S (not part of the Roomba brand line, I just think of robovacs as Roombas... like Band-Aids and Kleenex and ChapStick 🙃). After a discount was only $180 and a lot of people seemed to prefer them over Roombas! We like it a lot so far! Sure makes MY day easier :) -Hannah 🌻
Can you please explain why you would delete the category once you’ve funded it and spent the money? Could you make a hidden/archived “farmed” category or something too?
You could totally do that if you like! And many do! Deleting the category and merging it with a broader category keeps things organized but also helps with reporting. Even when you hide a category, the spending is still associated with the hidden category, so your spending report will be a little more fragmented. Merging it with a broader category can give you a better idea how much you spend in that broader category as a whole. It really just depends on what kind of insights you want to get out of your reports. ~BenB
How would you balance this idea with a major purchase like a new sofa or something definitely over $1-2k? I'm thinking maybe choosing to focus on a larger purchase/ home project vs wish farm at a time. Thoughts?
All you have to do is set up a Savings Balance target and uncheck the "by date" box! When you check the "by date" box, your budget will do everything it can to help you save that amount of money up before that date comes. BUT if you leave that "by date" box unchecked, it will just tell you to save X amount eventually. -Hannah 🌻
Hey Hannah, this is an unrelated question. In your month ahead scenarios, how do you handle left over funds that are not accounted for until the end of the month? Thanks!!
Hello Hannah, is the wish farm a concept of yours that you propose to YNAB or is it a YNAB concept ? Love from Morocco and yes I ❣️ the wish farm concept 🥰😁
Great question! The Wish Farm technique was one dreamed up by one of the YNAB team members, Dave! If you've ever been to any YNAB workshops, you may have had Dave as a teacher. In fact, he did a live on the Wish Farm the other day! I'll link it below! ua-cam.com/video/y_buGUWEwDo/v-deo.html -Hannah 🌻
@@YNABofficial In that case...poor baby!! Tell her I'm sorry.🤗. My sheepdog was interested in everything! except caterpillars..she ran like the wind. It was weird. She was OK with snakes and worms...me not so much..
hello Hanna. Please should subscriptions I want, which are not needs, say subscriptions for sports (this world cup or the basketball app or NFL,etc) fall under my wish farm because i want them but can leave without them or should they fall under my monthly expenses because they are charged every month?
Hey there! It's all dependent on your priorities! If having a World Cup subscription is a must for you (and it's totally allowed to be a must!), then go ahead and make a category for that subscription in your "Bills" category group so that you're prepared to pay it every month. If it's something that you'd like to have one day but don't have room for it right now financially, stick it in your Wish Farm and save up for it until you're ready to afford it or are confident you could pay the bill every month. It sounds like you're planning to subscribe, in which case, definitely definitely definitely build it into your monthly finances plan and consider it a bill! 🌻 Hannah
why does it only have to be 3 items at a time? what if you don't have any small items left but have more medium items? do you put 2 mediums items in your wish farm or just one medium at all times?
I think the idea behind having one of each "goal size" is that it makes it achievable and helps us still eventually acquire everything on our list. It'd be a lot easier to just knock out all the small ones and never give any money or attention to your bigger ones, OR hone in on one big one and never let ourselves have any of the smaller ones. BUT, if your list has run low on wish list items, then you could definitely do two medium-sized wishes at once or a handful of small ones! It's not a hard and fast rule, just something to keep you pursuing ALL your wish list items with equal attention. -Hannah 🌻
You could do separate wish farms if you want to keep the S, M, L categories. But I don’t think the wish farm has to be divided into small, medium and large. You could do a yours, mine and ours breakdown. Just make sure you’re allocating each wish in a way that both partners are comfortable with.
This is a great question! I've never had a partner or shared a budget, so this is uncharted territory for me! Someone else asked this too, and my thought is each of you get to pick one small goal each or one medium goal each, and then you pick one large goal together that you both want to fund. You can fund the large goal at whatever pace you want, and then make sure to always fund your smaller individual goals at equal amounts so no one is making more progress than the other. But, that's just me spitballin'! Let me know if you try it and how it goes! -Hannah 🌻
The simple answer: Yes. If you have made a wish list - things waiting to be farmed/grown - you'll have a whole bunch of categories waiting to get their turn to be funded. I don't think you are meant to spend from the wish list; just fund there and move the funds to an existing, regular category. You could always rename a category but if you've also added notes, it's easier to just delete.
We have a long wish list. We have a single line in our "Life & Living" group. Since funding our infrequent expenses is still shaky - thank you debt! - we slide money into the Wish Farm category. Every quarter we will review where we are at and if we *need* or really, really *want* something and have the money to cover it. If so, we get it. If not, we wait another quarter (or so)... Once we are YNAB broke (debt free) the game will change quite a bit. All infrequent expenses will get fully funded and we can finally put a larger amount to the Wish Farm category. Then every month is Christmas!
Good eye! 😉 This is actually a re-do of an older video Hannah made before our most recent app update, so the sections without the ring were part of the previous video, and the parts with the ring are the new sections she added to reflect the new update. - Ben M
Do you have a video going more into depth of hiding/deleting categories? I just went to delete my first category (a CC that I paid off) and it prompted me, like it did to you here, about past transactions and how YNAB would need to take the money covering those transactions and reassign it. Thing is, that would throw my Account Balance off, right? For now, I just have it hidden until I can figure it out without breaking my account. Thanks!

Love this! But I can't even make my wish farm list because I'm so concerned about where Hannah's gorgeous ring went! It was sparkling at me in the beginning of the video and then it disappeared and I'm worried it's buried with the cheese. (And since this video is like 7 months old, that would be some moldy cheese.)
HA! Oh my word, that's hilarious. I think I took it off when I put on those tight gardening gloves and forgot to put it back on 😂 No fear though, it's on my fingy right now!! 🌻 Hannah
I struggle a bit with the wish farm: either I end up funding the low value ones because I can finish them off quickly, but then the high value ones never get any money, or I spread it around all categories, but then nothing ever reaches completion... :( Any tips?
Maybe try to stick a small wish between every medium and large wish you fund? You said you feel motivated by the small wins, so if you purposefully make a plan to pursue a small wish, then medium, then small, then large, then small... hopefully that gives you enough momentum to fund those bigger wishes but be energized by the smaller wins in between! -Hannah 🌻
I feel like you could possibly also skip the wish list part and just keep your L, M, and S lists in the notes section. Then just change the name and budget accordingly..
Oh gurl, yes. Also a very neat and clean way to do it, just make sure you don't accidentally delete that category line and lose your wish list! I kinda like to have my wishlist in view because it's another level of motivation for me! -Hannah 🌻

Great swaeter! Where to buy? How many to budget? :-)
Help! How do I get the cheddar out of my laptops heat sink???
Thoughts?
How do you safe a target with an open date as seen in 10:27 like it appears "needed eventually" on Android or Web?
All you have to do is set up a Savings Balance target and uncheck the "by date" box! When you check the "by date" box, your budget will do everything it can to help you save that amount of money up before that date comes. BUT if you leave that "by date" box unchecked, it will just tell you to save X amount eventually.

Hey Hannah, this is an unrelated question. In your month ahead scenarios, how do you handle left over funds that are not accounted for until the end of the month? Thanks!!
The one that got away!!😂
and also the toy. Saw that!
🙃

Hello Hannah, is the wish farm a concept of yours that you propose to YNAB or is it a YNAB concept ? Love from Morocco and yes I ❣️ the wish farm concept 🥰😁
Great question! The Wish Farm technique was one dreamed up by one of the YNAB team members, Dave! If you've ever been to any YNAB workshops, you may have had Dave as a teacher. In fact, he did a live on the Wish Farm the other day! I'll link it below!

Oh, she does notttttt like the Roomba 😂 Verrrrrry skeptical of it 😂

@@YNABofficial In that case...poor baby!! Tell her I'm sorry.🤗. My sheepdog was interested in everything! except caterpillars..she ran like the wind. It was weird. She was OK with snakes and worms...me not so much..
Oh, she'll be fine 😂 She's a little bit of a weenie, but she does it to herself 🤣

hello Hanna.
It sounds like you're planning to subscribe, in which case, definitely definitely definitely build it into your monthly finances plan and consider it a bill!

why does it only have to be 3 items at a time? what if you don't have any small items left but have more medium items? do you put 2 mediums items in your wish farm or just one medium at all times?
I think the idea behind having one of each "goal size" is that it makes it achievable and helps us still eventually acquire everything on our list. It'd be a lot easier to just knock out all the small ones and never give any money or attention to your bigger ones, OR hone in on one big one and never let ourselves have any of the smaller ones. BUT, if your list has run low on wish list items, then you could definitely do two medium-sized wishes at once or a handful of small ones! It's not a hard and fast rule, just something to keep you pursuing ALL your wish list items with equal attention.
-Hannah 🌻
How would you run this for a shared budget? Could see it getting a bit complicated. Thanks, though, love it as always!
-Hannah 🌻
Do you then delete the category and start fresh??
I like to call mine a wish garden 🪴🥰
love the video very informative..
But you lost your ring half way the video..:) :P did you plant it in the cheddar cheese. .ROFL
Good eye! 😉 This is actually a re-do of an older video Hannah made before our most recent app update, so the sections without the ring were part of the previous video, and the parts with the ring are the new sections she added to reflect the new update.

Just the phrase "wish farm" makes me happy lol
Do you have a video going more into depth of hiding/deleting categories? I just went to delete my first category (a CC that I paid off) and it prompted me, like it did to you here, about past transactions and how YNAB would need to take the money covering those transactions and reassign it. Thing is, that would throw my Account Balance off, right? For now, I just have it hidden until I can figure it out without breaking my account. Thanks!
Hey Kevin! The Budget Nerds did an episode where they talk about cleaning up their budgets, that I can link below. But, for a super straight forward step-by-step, you can follow these help docs to learn how to best hide/delete your categories!

Why do I see your new videos on my recommended page but not on my subscribers page? I’m subscribed to you guys. Does it happen to anyone else?
Happened to me too! I went ahead and turned on notifications which I never do. Never want to miss a Hannah video
Huh! We heard a co-worker say the same thing! Looking into it 🧐

wait tax is not added lol?
I wish you could grow Cheese in a pot like that...
All trees are literally plants, big or small!
Did she plant seeds in cheese?
... what? Amy, come on, that's ridiculous...
🌻 Hannah
P.S. Yes, yes I did. No sprouts so far. Odd. Trying to grow little cheese curds.
-Hannah 🌻
@@YNABofficial Thank you Hannah! Good idea!
"aww crap... came out the drainage hole... " lol
-Hannah 🌻
Where would you put a husband on your wish list? 😁
