I will have to go back and listen again to see if you noted the frequency response curve of this mic. I find it interesting how few people consider the importance of matching their different sound capturing tools as closely as possible. All mics do not sound the same, so a prime consideration should be matching their sound as closely as possible. It is extremely valuable on narrative projects where depending on the requirements you might be working with a combination of lavs, stick, and shotgun mics both wired and wireless. Off axis response is also a critical factor, especially with indy projects where the boom operator might not be super skilled. A low price is a great starting point but knowing what you really need from your microphones long term might encourage one to invest a tad bit more up front for lasting value, like buying good glass, you'll never regret having quality.
Hey hey again theweeklyonline! I briefly mention that it has a flat frequency response, but haven't quite figured out a way to really show it. Your comment about trying to match them up with other mics gave me an idea for another video for the D2. I have the Deity w.Lav that I reviewed earlier this year that also sports a flat frequency response, I want to see how close these two mics match up with my voice. Very true about the glass analogy. I hope I will be able to get some other shotgun mics in for review in 2020 so I can get a database of comparisons for people to see. Thanks again for stopping by! See you in the next one!
Great review! Synco is going to seriously change the market at this price. It's at least at good or better than any of the Rode mics, and close to as good as the industry standard Sennheizer mics. Thank you!
Synco also has a healthy selection of different types of audio equipment, they have a wireless lav set with the formfactor of the Sennheiser AVX system, I don't think its the same type of 2.4ghz system but I do love that flat hard antenna design. Hope I can give that a review too! Very excited to see how Synco continues to develop cause the price point is really not bad for this sound quality!
Funny you mention shotgun mics, I'm still using my Rode Videomicro in the youtube studio straight from a hotshoe mount. I bought it 3 years ago, my 1st mic & no reason to change. For outside you're absolutely right, shotgun mic w/ windmuff above the camera is the only way to go. You might get away with a wireless GO, but no further down the food chain for me. And man, if that Sokani had a windmuff W/O that POS compression algo. That would my UA-cam mic right now.
Hey hey again The Macronical! The Rode Video Micro was something I thought about getting back in the day, but just never did. From all reviews it definitely is quite the performer for its size! Yea, the Sokani would be great if it left the audio signal alone a little bit. I have a feeling we're going to see quite a few UHF small form factor systems coming in 2020, so lets see which company will get the hint and try to give us a true UHF Rode Go competitor!
@@TLDR_filmmaker I'm seriously thinking Picomic might come out with a option here, plug'n'play is something they do better than anyone bar Rode in the microphone department. And for me, being usually a 1 maybe 2 man show on mostly interviews, that takes care of a ton of problems for me

Honestly, the samples I’ve been hearing online over the past month or so, I’d say the Synco generally sounds better than most of the Rode and Deity mics in the sub-$1000 price range. Maybe the Rode and Deity mics have a bit more bass and a warmer sound than the Synco, but the Synco seems to have a stronger sense of isolating the desired sound from the rest of the environment. Creates a kind of “3D” sound design to me, but I suppose it could just be my ears.
Hey hey again Virgiltheart! To me, this Synco definitely sounds very... "quality", is the best I can describe it. If I didn't know what someones shotgun mic was, before hand, and heard this kind of a quality. I would automatically assume it was a RODE or Deity mic, it just sounds clear and full. I'm very interested to see if Synco expands their shotgun microphone line and maybe make a shorter one for indoors, or maybe a stereo one for dialogue scenes?
Hey hey Mamanda Panda! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Hey hey again 渥太华晓冬! To use this mic with a camera you need to have some sort of preamp that supplies 48v phantom power. From there it will then plug into your camera. Something like this is the cheapest way to go, but I do not know how the audio quality will sound like necessarily. It should be fine. geni.us/hEVkZLL As for a mic stand, any traditional mic stand will work as the Synco comes with mic stand adaptor.
I recently picked up the Synco Mic D2 ($168.00 Amazon lightening deal) and really like it, but there is something odd I've not come across before. When I connected the mic to my existing xlr cable, it didn't work. I tried 4 other known working xlr's and found the same thing. I then decided to try the included Synco pig tail and the mic worked fine. Testing further, I connected the Synco pig tail to my existing xlr cables and it works! Anyone else experience this? I did see a couple of comments saying something similar when I googled it.

I'm looking to record some wildlife & bird sounds. Would you say this microphone would be a good option at the price if I add a Shröedinger's windmuff?
Hey hey again Emo Emu! Haha Shröedingers cat! Unfortunately I'm really not familiar with the needs of someone looking to record wildlife and birds as I'm not sure how close you're looking to get the mic to the source. The further away you are from the source the more environment sounds you're going to get in the recording. I believer there are other shotgun style mics out there that are going to be even more directional than tis one, but I would say if you are able to get between 1-5 ish feet from the wildlife, you should be able to get a nice sound, further than that it may be not as desirable (in my limited experience). As for the sound of this microphone for wildlife, unfortunately I'm still not able to provide you the best idea how well this mic will perform in those situations. I imagine it will perform decently well, unless the bird gets really excited with their very high pitch sound, then I'd say make sure you're recorder is also set correctly with the gain staging. The Snyco mic itself should be able to handle the sound pressure from afar. I did see you comment on Curtis Judds video on the Zoom F3, and that 32bit float will definitely help with the gain staging so you don't clip out. Hope this helps!
sir, I m commenting from the Caribbean. I don't like spending hard earned money foolishly, neither on a whim, or because someone on youtube convinced me to. I'm now getting into voice over and I really want to be using a shotgun mic, that can offer good quality, without hissing, self noise etc. can you honestly and truly recommend the sync mic D2?
Hey hey Antoine! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! This is a hard question and there are multiple parts that come into what you want out of a mic. The mic itself is fine and performs well. What really matters is your recorder, cables, and if you are inside a sound booth. Hey hey again zagorcuk1966! It may be just a little as I found out afterwards when I started doing more audio tests of different mics that my Tascam DR40 has two different noise floors, I may have been reaching close to the 2nd stage before it drops. But also others have reported that this mic needs a more high quality XLR cable to reduce self noise. I don't do much straight shotgun mic reviews these days, but hopefully in the future I can get ahold of a better field recorder and at least one good cable for standardized testing.
@@TLDR_filmmaker you mean the self noise might be better with other equipment compared to what I heard ? ...thanks for the reply to correct this despite the age of the video.
Correct. The Tascam DR40 isn't known for decent noise floor once you get up to +12 on the preamp. A colleague of mine that has this microphone found out that different XLR cables were producing different noise floors going into his much better Sound Devices MixPre3 mk.1. Otherwise its a decent shotgun for someone thats already got a good preamp and cables and just wants a backup or a cheaper 2nd shotgun. For me I rock the RODE VideoMic NTG, love that shotgun for going into DSLR or straight into my Tascam DR40!
