I am a pretty a new homeschooling mom I was home-schooled when I was a kid but it is quite different being a teacher and then a student. I have three children my oldest is 6 he's in first grade then I have a four-year-old who's in pre-K and then my second daughter is 18 months so I find it really hard to juggle and stay on task especially with the baby and nap schedules and different kids pulling my attention so I think I will try this time block. @@alycecline5053 Hope it helps you find a little peace in your day! When I had kids that age, I tried to do most of our school work while the littlest was napping. Nap time was my saving grace! Also, keep in mind you really don’t have to do a ton for the ages of your kids. Shouldn’t need more than around 2 hours worth of lessons! 😉
Very similar to yours only much shorter blocks, around 45 minutes, and ending at lunch. You've inspired me to up my afternoon game; I think adding blocks in there will help manage the chaos better!
Praise GOD, the LORD led me to do Christian private education, Homeschooling , for my children, now are routine , has changed , they're teen, i start with my devotional time, , praying with children in the Morning even if they're still sleeping, make there breakfast, then they start there own schedule , 2 or 3 classes, then a break , family prayer at noon , then lunch/ break time, resume the next classes on there schedule , finishing at usually 3pm , dinner at 530 pm 6 pm chore time, then free time, my children are 14, 16 , 22 year's , i love the fact that we can Pray as a family at any time of the day, and honor the LORD any time also, and no person or school officials , can tell us we can't 🙏 pray, GODs Word is of utmost importance in our lives, and his Holy Spirit Amen.❤❤

I REALLY love the unschool Wednesday! I’ve never felt like I wanted to do a full unschool but I really love a sprinkling of that interest based learning in the week.
We just started it last year and love it! Definitely plan on continuing this coming year!
Our routine looks like this: My children get up at 6:00 in the morning. They go down to the kitchen and start working on their math. It usually takes me 30 min to do my devotional and be fully awake, so I‘ll usually join them at about 6:30 in the kitchen and make breakfast.
At that point they‘ll move on to other independent subjects (Fix It Grammar, Wordly Wise, Typing,...). Then we have breakfast together. After breakfast, we continue with school; I correct their work and work with them individually where need be.
At about 9:00 to 9:30 we are pretty much done with school. After school, my children go outside to burn some energy. I call them back in at 11:00 to help with lunch. We have quiet time after lunch and the kids go outside afterwards.
In the Late afternoon, the kids either have sports practice, a friend over or we do an interest-let unit study. My children listen to an audio-book or do independent reading in bed before going to sleep. That’s about it. That’s my day. I wouldn’t change it for the world.

great! do you plan what maths they will do beforehand? and if so how do they know, do they have a curriculum?
@@hunterkudo9832 I lay out their workbooks on the kitchen table the night before. There is a stack for each child. On top of the stack I‘ll leave a to-do that reads:
#1 Math Lesson 67
#2 Typing Lesson 26-28
#3 Fix It! 2 Sentences

This is why I can't wait to move to a state without a requirement for hours! To start in late August and finish at the end of May, with no breaks except weekends and major holidays (only take I think 4 or 5 days off the whole year as far as holidays go) we need to spend 5-6 hours a day doing school. This doesn't include meal times, housework, making up time missed for doctor's appointments, etc...
It's our first year and we are doing a fairly "unschooling" sort of thing because it's too much all at once for me to handle doing anything even remotely vigorous. By unschooling, I just mean we aren't using curricula. Flashcards, puzzles, games, documentaries, books, random workbooks, and whatnot are how we are muscling our way through for now. I've made some worksheets for different things as well as printed out maps but overall it's pretty basic. However, I'm already (slowly) getting started on planning what we'll do next year.

I agree, blocking and looping are the way to go! I’ve been homeschooling since 2002… when everyone was against it. lol
Now many families have joined. Particularly after the pandemic. I’m currently homeschooling my Grandson.

Time blocking is totally my jam just as a life skill! I’ve always loved having a set time to get work done and then a block to just relax or burn energy. That focused ‘block’ has really helped me accomplish more as an adult and I’m excited to try to implement this into more of our home school routine.
My daughter is in 6th grade and I assign a certain amount of work each day and when she's done, she has free time. Social Studies is done independently. Science is also usually done independently and she takes a science class at a homeschool science center once a week where they do experiments. I do math with her and is the subject she struggles with the most. We use IEW for writing with the dvds, so writing is mostly independent. We fo readers workshop and use novel studies for the novels she reads. She averages one novel study a month and she has free reading for 30 minutes everyday. We also do logic, vocabulary and notetaking. I work evens, so she will do a lot of the work after I leave for work.

We have a different sort of schedule we have to keep..My oldest is in 11th grade and is doing homeschool as well as a program at the local college...My youngest two are naturally late sleepers, so I let them sleep in until 9/930 so that I can knock out the other subjects with my 11th grader. There's a lot of fitting in of classes with my younger two around driving to/from college for my son...It feels currently stressful and like I'm shoving things in for my younger two...I like this idea of block scheduling...it might help structure the day a little more rather than it feeling like chaos!

Haha! This is the first time I watch you, but this is almost exactly how I block out our days... morning block, core block, Lunch and then afternoon block. Homeschooling a 12, 8 and 5 yo. Works really well for us. Gives a good structure and routine while also maintaining some flexibility.

This is helpful thank you 😊 it’s harder I think if kids have extra murals, lots of dancing and sport, judo, singing and music in the afternoons, because then you have to make sure everything gets done in the morning. Like the block idea though, relieves the pressure and feeling of failure afterwards if you didn’t stick to the schedule.

When I had a first grader we only did 9am-12pm and it was always up and down in consistency. Now, trying homeschool again with a third grader and we are one week in. The block schedule is soo manageable and helpful to keep on track. Even if we fall behind in a subject there is no issue since we know we did our best in the time we had. Thank you so much!
Our routine includes Wednesdays being a catch-up, review or unschooling day as I am working childcare at my womens Bible Study and my kiddo can get distracted in the homeschool room.

WOW, thanks! This REALLY helps! I have had that stringent schedule and can't seem to stick to it. This will help keep me from pulling my hair out. It is like a major feat for us to stay on schedule. Also the kids really do need these breaks in the day and this will allow for that more. I plan to try this ASAP! Thanks again!!

OMG I love it! We use something very similar. A public school based Time Schedule with the daily subjects that need to be done in their perfect arrengement and then try to complete one after the other without really looking at the clock. My son, now 8 years old, always wants to push and be done with everything before lunch, wherelse my daughter, now 6 years old, could work and write and read and be a model student from 9 to 5 :) Oh! And not to forget the 2,5 year old baby-boy who spices things up a little during the school day. Boring? Not really existent in my vocabulary these days. And I love it! A valuable time with my kids that wants to be spent well!
However, THIS Schedule you mention in your video is fabolous! I mean, also blocking the free time activities has never come to my mind before and I love the idea! So I just filled out the blank PDF you made and hung it next to the time table we use right now. Thank you for that!! And now I'm SO looking forward till monday to use it and try the difference.

We're 10 years in and every time I have to change up our schedule because something isn't working I always feel like a complete failure and like I don't know what I'm doing. It's the home stretch, they're both in highschool, but if I let them they'll shove the science books to the back of their shelves and try to forget about them. 🙄 And if I'm not careful... I'LL forget about them. 😅

I'm new to homeschooling and just bought the 2nd grade student bundle from Abeka. I'm so overwhelmed on how to start out lesson plans. I'm really glad I found your channel.

We have a very relaxed approach to our homeschool day. I "officially" allot 2.5 hours a day to homeschool (kindergarten) and will schedule 4 subjects and dedicate 30 mins per subject. The other 30 mins is broken into a 15 minute snack (recess) break halfway through and then at least 15 mins read aloud time. If we don't finish whatever we're working on during a subject we'll just put it away until the next day Or sometimes we'll keep going with it and toss the subject we planned afterward! What I've come to realize is that my daughter is learning ALL day. No matter if I have something scheduled or not. But it makes it less stressful for the both of us knowing that we have that "official" 2.5 hour period where school work Needs to be done.

The first homeschool book I read was Dumbing Down and then Wild & Free and For the Children’s Sake....so I am in and ready to begin! Granted we won’t begin formal lessons until my son is 6 or 7....he needs his growing time, he is a mover. He learns so much every day that I know he will be soaking up the world without formal lessons for now ❤️

I’ve been using the block schedule to organize our homeschool day as well. I am definitely looking forward to your loop scheduling routine. I really need help integrating history/social studies/geography/science etc into our homeschool week more consistently. The challenge with our schedule is that mid afternoon is when I do my online teaching. And that’s usually a 2 hour block so I feel like our homeschool days are rushed sometimes because I’m trying to get ready for that. I’m trying to get better at planning ahead on the weekend for my online classes so that I’m not spending homeschool time doing it. I really love your advice and suggestions. They are really encouraging to a stressed mama who doesn’t really have a lot of time to think sometimes lol
Oh I feel you, mama! It can be stressful trying to fit everything in when you have other commitments! Loop scheduling would definitely help out with those subjects you mentioned! ☺️
I love to have more frequent breaks too! And so do my little ones 7, 6, 4, 2 (& 5 months!) technically we are only schooling 1st + 2nd grade but still 🤣

I tried the easy peasy since i haven't chosen a curriculum and i felt i was making them miss out or left behind. I only had them out a week out of public school. I almost gave up too soon but i saw your channel and truly has bless me and encourage me in a big way. I'm super excited to try this block schedule. It has bothered me that creating a literal time schedule has been impossible because...well, life LOL And my kids are Pre School, Kindergarten, and 4th, so that's difficult. Thanks for sharing!

All the comments seem like people love this schedule. I felt it was too much, like the whole point of homeschooling is to get more freedom. I felt the kids will be busy around school all day long following this schedule. I haven't tried this or any other methods yet. We are new to homeschooling but listening to this overwhelmed me. Is it just me? Am I missing something here since everyone else seems to love this routine.
I t try to keep lessons to under 2 hours right in the morning, for the reasons you said. We do 20 min or less lessons and that’s it, that’s the time we have.
I think it all depends on your family and what they need in the season you’re in. We just finished our first year homeschooling and it needed to be flexible and loose in this season. We had just come out of public school, rushing around everywhere and we all needed to breath! Luckily, the laws for our state are pretty lax and we were able to minimize what we had to do and relax a little. But I can definitely see us needing more structure in future years…

@@TheEclecticHomeschooler I'm definitely using this schedule to print and put on the wall! It is similar to what we do, but I think it will helps they can see it (4th, 2nd, K, Pre3) I also want to get those core subjects done right off the bat....Core Block for the win! Thanks for the resource!

We're first year homeschoolers, and yes, I use the old school strict school like schedule, it is stressful for me, so I will definitely look into the block schedule approach.

Hello! I was curious to see what app or site your little one was using in the video.
I homeschool 1 child with a similar schedule. The difference is the 1 chore a day is in the 2:30 pm.-5:00pm. time block. My child's snack is in that time block too, at about 3:00 pm. Also different in our schedule ( because of only child dynamic) is what academic subjects we do in what block first or second is up for negotiation.

Thanks for watching! I try to do most errands on our unschooling day or in the afternoons once we’re done with our core work if I have to schedule appointments. The kids help with a lot of the housework and they have some chores they do after breakfast and before dinner. I’ll fit things in during their afternoon independent work.

I also use the block schedule I just didn't know the name. We finish around 1:30 because we choose to do everything in the morning so we can have the afternoon free. Another thing is we have a weird weather this year in South Africa particularly summer is extremely weird, at least my province I don't know about others but we've had a summer that's both summer and winter and autumn all at the same time and that's new and weird. Because we never know what to expect and our class is a small room attached to the garage outside, we prefer to work through our 4 hours of school early morning so that if it rains with some electric storms which I loathe because ... (terrifying) and usually how it is and always been in summer when it rains, when the weather changes at least we're done and back in the house.
The bummer is, she also has online classes at 09:30 so we definitely have to just get up, get started and get on with the day. :)

Currently, I have 1 daughter in 1st so I don’t have to have any real schedule. We are not early people. We eat breakfast and start school around 10 or after...usually more like 11. 😊 But we’re expecting a baby in 5 weeks so I’m sure our schedule is going to majorly change soon. 😳♥️

The unschooling day is awesome especially if you have doctors appointments or errands. I usually only use unschooling days when our schedule is off and we are in the dumpster

I know this is an old video but maybe you’ll see this anyway. How do you recommend doing this for a working homeschooling family?
Your examples are great for parents homeschooling that don’t work but what about the vast amount of parents trying to homeschool that also have to work from home? A block schedule idea for that would be so helpful. A lot of parents nowadays have to work from home and homeschool due to the pandemic and also changes within the school systems. We don’t want to send our kids back to that environment for education but we also have to work. The juggle is so hard.
I love your heart to want to make it work and be able to keep your kids home! Admittedly, I don’t have experience with that so I wouldn’t have a ton of advice in that area. I would say that choosing curriculum that can be more independent would be key and then blocking out those subjects for your children to do during your work time would help. Obviously, if your kids are younger, that’s more of a challenge. Recruiting older kids to help the littler ones with their work can be a big benefit! Have you done a video on how you assigned chores? Do they do as part of being in the family or for an allowance? I have two little boys and I’m trying to determine the best approach for them so that they are learning responsibility but not with the mindset of what do I get from this ;-).
I haven’t done a dedicated video about how we do chores yet but I’ve thought about it! Our kids don’t get an allowance, they are expected to do chores as a way to serve the family. They do get rewards for going above and beyond expectations or doing extra chores though!
@@TheEclecticHomeschooler I like that way assigning chores as contributing to the family, and then having the reward system. My boys do have some favorite little iPad games that they have asked to purchase bonus games on and I’ve been unsure what to do about that, I wonder if that could be one of the rewards for going above and beyond. I'm curious to know how you add your youngest into the blocks? I love this scheduling concept! However, I have two children that still require a lot of hands on attention and help and I am trying to figure out what to do with one, while working with the other. I am also expecting another baby in November! So the dynamic shift will certainly be interesting.

I have a 10yr girl, 8yr boy, and a 5yr old girl... all different levels... all "need mom" for a lot of their work still. 🥴

@@allisonburick2215 Oh, that’s a challenge isn’t it! We are still in that stage too. I highly suggest assigning an older sibling helper to either help or entertain the younger child while you work with whoever needs help. It’s great to do a rotating subject with your kids so say, one child can work on silent reading while you assist with math for another child or something along those lines. It also helps to set boundaries to train your kids not to interrupt while you are helping someone else and they will get their turn when you are done. Maybe incorporate a timer situation to make sure everyone gets a fair turn with mom. 😉 Hope you find something that works for you!

I have 2 autoimmune diseases. 1. Fibromyaglia and 2. Rheumatoid arthritis. So, everyday is different for us. On really good days we get math, language, science, history and health done and spelling. My main goals is math, reading, spelling and language arts. My 4 older kids can do there work independently most days. If they are learning something then I spend how ever long it takes for them to learn it. I also ask them to try new things on there own beforehand. I had a kindergarten last year which will be in 1st grade this new school year. He is still struggling with reading so that's what we are focusing on this summer. We don't have a set day we start and end our school year. During, the summer, one week we do 3 days of schooling and the next 2 days. I just had surgery, 2 weeks ago so right now it's just whatever interest them. The past 2.5 years I have done all the teaching myself but next year all 5 kids will do math and language online. I will have a 9th grader so he will also do his science, history and health online through Abeka. 4 out 5 of my kids started out in Christian school and with Abeka so we have just stuck with Abeka. I have looked at other curriculums but they all seemed way to easy for my kids. Maybe one day I will adventure out and buy those. I have bought the big books on Amazon for my 3rd grader who will be a 4th grader next year and everything in the 4th grade book she has already learned in 3rd grade. My almost 5th grader has already learned everything in the same book. I do use these books for things they need extra practice on. My kids get a snack and 10 minute break at 1030am. My kids would just rather get done with there school work and have the rest of the day to do whatever and chores. My kids get up and start school when they get done making there beds. Some kids start at 730am and are finished by 11am, with stopping just for breakfast. They have normal chores but I'm wake all during the night and I do extra cleaning . I've tired different schedules for school this just seems to work best for us. We will be doing school 4 days a week next year. I take infusions every 4 weeks as well. I enjoy watching your videos and learning new things everyday.

Read aloud is just when I read a book out loud with the kids - usually a more fun literature or fiction story, often going along with the time period we’re studying, but more just for fun. We have read aloud for history in the past but this year my kids are doing their history reading on their own. I didn’t use to require writing for history but we are following a Charlotte Mason curriculum their year, which includes written narrations about what they’re reading. Copywork has usually been Bible verses but sometimes sections from a book we are reading or quotes we like.
Block 1 (before 9am): mom time, breakfast, devotions, get kids ready, morning chores and weekly chore
Block 2 (9-11:30): circle time (for my toddler), morning basket & family subjects, free time (outside, we may run a quick errand, art projects, baking, sensory activities, that sort of thing)
Block 3 (11:30-2:30): make, serve & tidy lunch, oldest 2 have independent play, toddler goes down for a nap, I do a quiet time, then we do my daughter’s core subjects, (she’s the only one I’m truly teaching (I have a 6, 4 & 2 year old) and we need to be home anyway for nap time, so we’ve moved her core work to the afternoon) tidy toys, free time
Block 4 (2:30-5:30): playground, make dinner
Block 5 (5:30-8): serve & tidy dinner, family time, final tidy of toys, baths & kids’ bedtime routine
Block 6 (8-11): time with my hubby & my pile of laundry
I love that it’s just a flow to the day, we have flexibility to take our time when we need to and it works well for us. The kids know what to expect. We do book work 3 days a week, have 1 enrichment day (often it means lots of nature study with the warming temperatures) and we do a fun Friday with lots of games, experiments & special activities.

Besides co-op, when do your kids play with friends such as play dates?
We have a nature/hiking group we get together with a few times a month where they have lots of free play time. They do random play dates in the afternoons with other homeschool kids that aren’t in school or on weekends occasionally. We also host a Bible study group that brings their kids twice a month so they get play time then as well and other random things like that.

We TRY to start by 9am and then do morning basket 2 core classes before lunch. After we do extra or unit studies. Finally before dinner he has to have individual work and reading done. So far so good

What was the computer program your son was using in the video? I am trying to find interactive apps or computer programs to homeschool my daughter next year for Kindergarten. Can you recommend any please?
That was Teaching Textbooks. It’s an app based math curriculum. It doesn’t start until level 3, which is about 2nd grade. We haven’t used a lot of math apps but do like Quickmath for practicing math facts (kind of like flash cards) and have also used Math Seeds, which is part of Reading Eggs.

My question with time blocking (for homesteading/homeschooling families) is WHEN do I get outside and do my garden stuff. OMG. I sorta *need* to get school done before our 2-4pm quiet time. But also when its hot here (sub tropical island) I need to get outside in the AM, when it isn't miserable. But then school doesn't happen bc by 4pm I'm DONE. Help! LOL. And I'm only homeschooling my eldest for first grade. Which doesn't take that long but it just seems like my morning is a rat race! I don't find many people who have the same situation as far as homeschooling PLUS the gardens/livestock (mine is small small small but you know, it still is work to weed, feed, pic off bugs, pollinate, food water, fix stuff, plant stuff, start seeds, and don't even get me started on trying to keep up with watering), and I have a small business I run from home.
That's definitely a challenge! We have some of those things as well, but it sounds like you've got more! Fortunately, with homeschooling, we can make our daily homeschool routine fit around our lifestyle, and it can flow with the seasons. There are seasons when there is more outdoor work to be done where we can let that be part of our school day (the kids help!) and just focus on the core subjects like math and LA during those days. Then there are times when we don't have as much going on and we can spend more time focusing on all the subjects that we want to cover. Best wishes!
I like the idea, but when do you ever make time for adventures or friends? Do the kids ever complain that they have school for such a long drawn out period over the days time even though you take long breaks? Also, do you tackle core subjects assisting one child at a time or all at once? Thats what im nervous about haha!
That’s exactly why we do our core subjects first before lunch. Then afternoons are only minor supplemental subjects, so if something comes up, we can skip those and meet up with people or run errands in the afternoons. As well as, at the time I made this video, our unschool day was the day we would try to schedule outside activities with friends or fields trips, etc. The kids are pretty independent and do most of their work on their own. I really only help my older three if they get stuck on something with math. And then we do morning time together for Bible, beauty subjects, and read aloud (which we skip if we’ve got other things to do). I see, and thanks for your quick response! Much appreciated. At the time when I was trying to do more subjects than just core it felt like we were doing school all day, which I didn't want to and the kids dreaded it. But I guess some days are just more allowing than others. I also have all younger ones for now so they kind of all need my attention all the time, trying to work around that as they get older and are able to help the younger ones and work more independently :)

Hi Zaida, we changed math curriculum since I made this video. We use Singapore Primary Mathematics instead. We found that Teaching Textbooks wasn’t keeping up with grade level and wanted to try something different. We really like Singapore so far!
I would love to try a block schedule. But how does it work when you have multiple children who are not independent? I will have a KIndergardener, 2nd grader, and a 4th grader. None of them are strong enough readers to work independently. I will also have a 4y old, 2y old and a newborn next school year.
Oh wow! You're in a busy season! It can be a challenge for sure with that many younger kids. I survived the little years while homeschooling my olders by taking advantage of nap time/quiet time as our primary schooling time to get the things that really needed more focused involvement from me. It's helpful if you can do as many subjects family style as possible. In elementary school, the only subjects that really need to be on individual levels are math and language arts. Everything else can be done as a group. If you have some things they can do independently, then you could try rotating between kids during your blocks. They don't all have to be doing the same subject at the same time, if that's easier. Example, one could be independently working on handwriting while you work with one on math. Or, involve your older children to read to (bonus that they're practicing reading while entertaining the littles) or help their younger sibling with their work while you work with the third child and then rotate.

Kids up at 6:40 and get ready for day
7 am breakfast basket with loop items in it like Monday-current events, Tuesday- Tuttle Twins day, Wednesday is world wise Wednesday, Thursday is sleep in day by this day we need to sleep in kids get up at 7:30. Friday we start with exploring our country Friday. In morning basket we do memory work, poems, scriptures, and a few things that take only a few minutes at a time. Then after it we have our independent work and chore time this last about an hour. Mom has to work every morning 8-9 am so this gets them working on a few review sheets and doing chores it works for us then at 9 is group lessons depending on the loops it is science or history. Then after this we do core independent core work and it rotates to who will need to work with mom and such. This last roughly 90 minutes to 2 hours then lunch time and free okay for 90 minutes then read out loud with Afternoon snack. It works for us

How can I do that with small children, I have 7 year old, and twins 5 year old, plus cooking, clean and time for my self and need help, getting crazy.... First year homeschool
With kids that young, lessons really don’t need to take very long, around 2-3 hours max. You could definitely be done by lunch time and have the afternoon for play and free learning activities and you could plan a block for cooking and cleaning to help make sure that time is available for what you need to get done. Do you make breakfast every day for your kids? Or do you set out cereal for them and then those old enough to pour it themselves do that, and you help those not old enough to get something for themselves? I make my kids get things for themselves; I'm wondering if I'm a horrible mom. When I was a kid, we got up and got ourselves cereal, or made ourselves toast with jelly.
I definitely do NOT make breakfast every day. Our kids often have yogurt and cereal or instant oatmeal or leftover pancakes/waffles. You are definitely not a horrible mom for not making hot breakfast everyday! It's important to teach kids independence and how to make food for themselves. That's a vital life skill!
