I have to say coming here today I am really shocked by the negative comments on this post. No one is making anyone do anything. If you want to eat garlic please do, but attacking this person is really not useful or helpful in any way. It is interesting that people get so incensed about garlic. Too bad we can't raise this level of interest in poverty and world peace, climate change, and hunger.

It's not really about being over sexual or having demon's blood in it. It's about rajasic, satvic and tamasic properties of foods that yogis pay attention to. It's not that garlic is bad. It should definitely be injested for health reasons. But when a person begins a serious meditative practice, then rajasic foods like onions and garlic should be avoided so the mind can settle. And, yes, they tend to excite ones personality. So, really, there are times when they should be consumed and times when they should be avoided from the yogic perspective. A lot of these viewpoints are substantiated in the Taoist traditions too. When you meditate, you just become more sensitive to energies. And, so, for someone who Is in a situation like that it becomes more important to pay attention to the subtleties of the energies of the plants.

The lady was just sharing a cultural tale of the creation of garlic, there's no need to project anger towards her. When one reads the stories of how things came to be in Greek mythology, the symbols and storyline gets quite colourful too. She never said she is explaining the science of garlic. She said she is sharing an ancient tale. And it's a tale rich in symbolism.

No one minds her telling stories. She sweepingly claimed that people on a spiritual path should actually avoid garlic because of this myth. That is reason for the both the sceptic and the mystic to object.

Have not eaten garlic for almost a year and didn't notice any bodily shortcomings so far! My body doesn't seem to miss it, as it didn't when I stopped eating meat and fish 20 odd years ago. So, off the menu it goes(together with onions). I eat a bowl of fresh fruits every day, however and some vegetable juice and bread, and occasional nuts like almonds, some oatmeal, that suffices, it seems. For me at least it does. Namaste.

So the intending Conquerors try to influence the intended to be conquered these stories to make them weak easily conquered since they don't eat garlic ! The conquers usually write the history and become the religious leaders because they have the power. All the while the Conquerors eat a lot of these good foods to be strong and easily win the battles . It has happened all over the world.

Yes, it is true that Ramana Maharshi indeed told the story about garlic plant to his disciples. In the book named " spiritual stories as told by Ramana Maharshi" page number 17, the story about garlic plant is mentioned. But there is some discrepancy in this video when it compared to that of the book. But essence of this video is the same as mentioned in the book. Let me quote from the book " It is very good for the body. But since it also has the touch of the demon, it has tamasic qualities too, which when eaten affect the mind. Hence , it is forbidden for sadhakas. " It is known fact in India that garlic is not part of sattvic food.
Therefore people who are in spiritual path should avoid taking garlic.

S.V. Ramanathan and M. V. Krishnan, sons of Munagala S. Venkataramiah came to the Ashram with their parents in the summer of 1930. They were just thirteen and ten years of age. One morning they were standing near the old dining hall (where now Sri Bhagavan's samadhi stands) when Ramu, the elder brother, remarked that for the last few days no onion sambar had been tasted by them. At that precise moment Sri Bhagavan was passing by the boys, as he was returning from the kitchen. He smiled and asked Ramu: "So, you want vengaaya (onion) sambar!" The boys blushed and kept quiet. Next morning, the boys were served with vengaaya sambar. Everybody thought it was onion sambar. Sri Bhagavan later in the day asked Ramu how he relished the sambar to which he replied: "Very well." Ramu, however, was surprised to know the truth only a few days later when his mother told him that what he ate was not onion but garlic sambar! There was no onion at that time in the Ashram and yet Sri Bhagavan wanted to fulfil the boy's wish. Through his expert culinary knowledge, he brought the smell and taste of onion to garlic itself!

Aye aye aye. So many people commenting mindlessly without critical thinking. Ramana maharshi's story is a parable.
Though the garlic has many curative properties by virtue of having been born of amrit, it is tainted with asura's blood -- this means it promotes tamasa and aggravates the demonic tendencies in human beings.
He basically told a long story that was easy to remember, so that you would remember the essence of the story -- that garlic, for all its curative properties, accentuates the negative tendencies in the mind which lead to spiritual downfall. Hence, Yogis avoid garlic. Such tamasik properties, cause it to create disturbances in the prana, which is ultimately what the Yogi aims to control.

According to Ayurveda, the ancient system of Indian medical practice, garlic and onions are considered Rajasic and Tamasic foods, and are not Satvic foods. We must east as many satvic foods (foods that are conducive to peace of mind; fruits and green leafy vegetables, rice, beans, wheat, milk and yogurt, etc. ) as possible and avoid rajasic and tamasic foods. Also, they are supposed to generate "heat" in our body (read: they cause sexual arousal or increase libido, as ginseng does), and so yogis and monks avoid them. The story this lady told is mythological: it is just a myth.

I have an amusing story to share.
The first time Yug Purush Swami Parmanand Mataraj was invited to Joshua Tree, CA to give a week-long retreat in 2003, I was asked to please be in charge of the cooking for Swami-ji and the retreat goers...being that I had some knowledge of Indian cooking.
Shri Natha Devi Premananda, who hosted this event, pulled me aside the evening before and said, "Look, anything you want to do...but the food has to be cooked without garlic & onions...so better make bland soups."
Somewhat deflated and a bit skeptical, I prepared the first evening meal of the retreat according to her directions.
It was very quiet during dinner, and I noticed that Swami-ji seemed crest-fallen...hardly eating his meal. His interpreter came over to me quietly and asked me whether we could do something about the food...it was very tasteless.
(Swami-ji is from the state of Uttar Pradesh)
Since I grew up with a love of Indian food, taught by my dear Mother, it was something that came joyfully to me.
From that moment on, I resolved to do what Swami-ji asked...not the 'idea' of some self-styled American guru trying to impress her Swami by locking me up in her mind cage.
It was right and proper to give our wonderful guru a banquet feast every night, so I did just that...and cooked his favorite hometown foods & sweets to our mutual inspiration!
He was very very happy.... garlic, onions & all!
    He shared with me this:
Things are only what you believe them to be.

A couple of things to consider
The demons were rahu and ketu blood from one made garlic and from the other made onion.
    These plants have medicinal value!
Many Hindus who don't take garlic/onion do not practice any particular spiritual discipline other than puja!
The Myth makes reference to kundalini yoga. So if you do any kundalini practice then garlic onion are contraindicated. If I were engaged in kundalini yoga I'd not take them unless for therapy for a given amount of time and maybe stop the practice at that time. But for most of the population who don't do yoga, it is fine.
Finally this myth is not really indicative of the teachings of Bhagwan Ramana Maharishi who was more a teacher of awareness of consciousness. The myth of Dakshinamurthy is much more aligned to him as a person. Hope that was helpful.

Excellent video .Dr Sahay has done a wonderful job narrating the story of the ocean churning from Hindu mythology. This video explains the mythological significance of garlic and should not be confused with the medicinal properties. To all dear friends please note , if we can pause a minute gather some patience, an open heart and mind that can introspect knowledge will shine.Garlic and ginger is used in almost all the popular Indian dishes and is also a major ingredient in western and chinese cooking,if you notice carefully this improves the taste of the preparation and very clearly it can be seen how the thought of consuming tasty food engulfs ones mind and pampers one to indulge in these food preparations, this is called the rajas or tamo nature because it makes one loose track of his spiritual goal and could lead him to the thought of food, sleep etc which works against the spiritual path, spiritual path requires will power, determination, concentration, discipline and sacrifice. So you can see how overindulgence in food defeats that purpose. However if you were to take out the garlic from the food being cooked there is no more the power of indulgence engulfing your mind,we call this nascent condition as satva because it is quite bland and calm in nature and takes you one step forward in trying to reach your spiritual goal. You may call this scientific or mythical the reality is one has to experience it to really feel the difference ,personally I have felt it.For some the difference can be noted pretty fast ,but for others it could take a while ,so be patient ,experiment and then things will be clear.

In what way does any event in the past make any thing auspicious or not auspicious

Interestingly Shri Ramana used to suffer from constipation and according to ayurveda, onion helps that problem. But probably no onion or garlic on the ashram menu.

Raw ginger has all the powers of garlic, and those who do not want to eat garlic can use ginger for culinary and curative purposes without any of the negative qualities of garlic such as strong smell that some people find noxious, etc. AyurvEdic specialists classify garlic its as having a tAmasic quality while ginger's pungency is saatvik according to them. I can vouch for that differentiation from my use of ginger for the last 18 years almost daily although I am not trained in AyuRvEdism. Also, I have read a modern book on garlic (I believe from the Chinese herbalist tradition) which says the daily use of garlic can cause kidney stones.

Everybody is entitled to an opinion. Or just an onion, like garlic. It has nothing to do with Ramana's teachings. Apart from the fact that every opinion is free to have. In consciousness, every meaning or truth is equally right or wrong. Deeper meaning or inner nature is beyond consciousness. Live your life/ truth in honesty and nothing is wrong. Bliss to all.

You know it’s serious and real. When you translate language from it original language. It looses all it meaning 10 x fold. That why it sound like a fantasy storie. Great video.

look, people who attempt to climb mount great mountains do not care about their safety in the same way that the ordinary man or woman does. In the same way, a yogi who is extremely focused on a certain goal does everything in his or her power to get there.. this might mean not eating meat or garlic, or having sex with one's only wife. However, another person can be enlightened and do whatever or eat whatever. In that case, you must change your whole idea about this project. this thing called enlightenment . maybe it is not worth striving for. maybe there is no such thing... maybe you just want to learn selflessness, achieve peace of mind, or get out of your own way.. It is certainly not about making garlic bad.

why are so many people who seem to be too dumb to understand the meaning of the story posting comments criticising it? This story means that garlic, has wonderful health benifits (highlighted by how it is formed from amritha which gives immortality) and how it also creates certain changes like increased sexual vigour and reduced mental abilities (symbolically represented by mixing of asura blood) simultaneously. There is no need for anyone who doesnt understand this to post abusive criticisms here. It is an educative story taught to children in gurukuls so that they learn about garlic. If you thnk its dull, then either you fail to understnd the meaning of the story or you have a habit of scoffing everything.

  • @srivatsanc8600

    1. Highly doubt if its Ramana Maharishi's story. 2. Asuras were never dumb people. else the devas would have either jobbed the entire churning to them or done it themselves. Interpretations of this story is literal and is definitely not the reason yogis don't eat garlic. It is something else, please consult several evolved Yogis before you announce it to the world or say something on their (yogi's) behalf.

My take is the brahmin caste stopped eating garlic because they did a lot of consulting and teaching and did not want it on their breath. Then, as they do in India, they made a mythology about it.

Just saw this today. I appreciate anyone on the spiritual path therefore not attacking the person who has uploaded this. But just to say that there are multiple misunderstandings and misinformations in the context of what was spoken in this upload. The essence was lacking and there were many mistakes in the authenticity of the episode. Please read the Srimad Bhagavatham Canto 8 to get the right clarifications on this story. It has a very symbolic reference to all our lives. But yes, Ramana Bhagavan did mention this story and yes, garlic is not a saathvik vegetable. One truly on the spiritual path should avoid it. Most Vaideekaas would have never eaten garlic in their lives. Whilst still learning, it is probably best to not proclaim anything considering ourselves to be a Guru, especially things that we are not sure about.

Ramana Bhagavan would have told this story to someone who was a ‘Grihastha’ sadhakas. Sadhakas usually avoid Garlic and onion. However, there is no bar on taking garlic and onion for those who have achieved control over the senses.
Yoga and Onion (from Sri Sai sacharitha)
Once it so happened that, a Sadhaka came to Shirdhi with Nanasaheb Chandorkar. He had studied all works on yoga, including the yoga sutras of Patanjali, but had no practical experience. He could not concentrate his mind and attain 'samadhi' even for a short time. He thought that if Sai Baba (Shirdi) will be pleased with him, he will show him the way to attain ‘samadhi', for a longer time. With this object in view, he came to Shirdi and when he went to the Masjid he saw Sai Baba (Shirdi) eating Chappathi with ONION. On seeing this, a thought crossed his mind: how can this man, eating stale bread with raw onion, solve my difficulties and help me" Sai Baba (Shirdi) read his mind and said to Nana Saheb, "Oh Nana, he WHO HAS THE POWER TO DIGEST ONION, SHOULD EAT IT and NONE ELSE."' Hearing this remark, the yogi was wonder-struck and, he fell at Baba's Feet with complete surrender. With pure and open mind, he related his difficulties and got their solution from Baba. Thus, being satisfied ad happy, he left Shirdi with Baba's ‘Udi’ and blessings.

Onion and garlic are both hot-tempered food. Onion and garlic do also thin the blood and it is used in ayurveda for the said purpose. It is adopted by some communities in their daily life practice... all other stories are simply rituals... Yes it is doesn't apply to all people because some has to eat hot tempered food, and some should not...
