For all of the problems with this movie, I adore two things. One, the ape makeup is some of the most realistic and stylized I've ever seen in a feature film, and two, the costumes are very intricate and detailed. Both together make some talented practical effects.
The ape makeup is simply top-tier. Yeah, CGI and motion capture for apes in the modern trilogy is impressive and all, but the practical effects here really does stand the test of time.
The ape makeup is not only the best ever in a Planet of the Apes movie, it’s the best I’ve ever seen in any movie. This alone made me come back to this film, and over time I’ve come to like it. It’s only really let down by Marky Mark and the other bland human characters. All of the apes are amazing in my opinion, especially Tim Roth who should have won an Oscar.
@@ultimamage3 I can get them going for the CGI mo-cap early on in the reboot films with Rise, where they wanted to show how they started out as regular apes that had their intelligence increased through a drug, but I still have my expectations that these newer apes are going to have to evolve into being a lot closer to the ones in this film at some point. Because this depiction of the apes along with the original film series are still what I immediately think of when I think "Planet of the Apes".

I think the one thing I've always loved about this movie, is Thade. He's such a goofy ass villain, and Tim Roth just seems like he's loving every second of that goofy ass role
I actually rather like this movie. The ape society was interesting, alien yet familiar, and overall the film hews closer to the satire of the original novel. It's not my favorite Planet of the Apes movie, and the reboot prequels absolutely blow it away, but it's an enjoyable enough movie.
I completely forgot this movie existed until 20 minutes ago, what a nostalgia trip! Now I'm craving more movies from around the 2000s because that was a great era IMO
While this may not be my favorite adaptation of the Planet of the Apes series, it holds a special place in my heart for the reason that it introduced me to the series as a whole.
I’m so happy to see this on CinemaWins because I grew up with both the original films as well as this remake just in time to watch and absolutely love the new prequel trilogy, which are some of my favorite films of all time. Thank you for winning a childhood favorite of mine🙏
I absolutely adore the reboot trilogy (AKA the Caesar Cycle). I don't think it gets enough love, so I'm excited to hear you give it the love it deserves.
I was a huge cinephile before this movie came out. Was a little kid watching the 1970’s Planet of the Apes movies on TV. 1999 was THE year for movies. This movie tanked with viewers who did not appreciate Burton’s vision. He made a good movie with great actors and a spectacular FX team. There is no reason for this movie to have tanked. It is all the camp and respect to the 70’s makeup effects, which were awesome for the time. This is a very good movie. And one of the last to be shot with so many physical effects.
19:28 I don't recognize either still frame, so here's a list of suggestions to consider for future EGA videos: -King Kong (2005 Film) -Disney's Hercules -James & the Giant Peach -Monsters Inc. -Crazy, Rich Asians -Ice Age -Night at the Museum -Mr. Peabody & Sherman -The Lost World: Jurassic Park -Star Wars: Clone Wars (2008 Film)
The. Ending of this version is closer to the ending in the original source book. It wouldn’t hurt to reference that in your critique, I hate how this version is slammed for the ending.
But what works on paper doesn't always work in practice. Tim Roth said he couldn't explain the meaning of the ending, nor the logic of it for example. As Burton had no interest in doing a sequel, it seems to have been there more for 'a starting point' if someone else took it over.
The ape mannerisms, specifically by species, in this movie is astounding. The gorillas have the greatest physical strength but mostly use it for show, whereas chimpanzees are apeshit bonkers and aggressive. And also worth pointing out how captive apes have developed sorta crushes on humans.
Also I don't think the the world seen at the end is ours conquered by the Thade we just saw, somehow getting to Earth and getting there before Wahlberg's character. I think it's an alternate realty, a parallel universe.
Although I instinctively agree, if we go by the "reverse order" thing, it's possible that Thade arrived earlier even if he left much later... But that is certainly all fanciful speculation for a likely nonsensical twist ending.
It really is a WTF twist but... if the Oberon is the 'genesis' of the population, many years/generations must have past before Leo arrived. Hence, when Thade followed him, many generations also past on earth before Leo arrives there.
Fun fact: apparently Tim Roth is really passionate about gun control, so much so that he stated that had he known he was going to have to do a scene with Charlton Heston he would have turned down the role. As it was he apparently only interacted with Heston during their scene and not outside of it
I don’t get it. Why would he have turned down the role if he had known Heston was going to be in the movie? Was it cause Heston was about Gun Ownership or something?
Please do the whole prequal trilogy. I swear they are criminally underated and forgotton about for some reason. IMO they are easily one of the best trilogies of all time. Plus Andy Circus is always a win!
Ever though of doing videos for the Riddick movies? They're all stupid fun, and the first two are old enough that doing a video on them would introduce plenty of new people to them.
Thanks! I still have those suggestions. I understand you'll be busy with those Planet of the Apes videos, and possibly Oppenheimer, still I would love to see those other videos come. But just take your time with it. You make my day everytime you release a video. 1. The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) 2. Jurassic Park III (2001) 3. Shrek (2001) 4. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) 5. Back to the Future (1985) or next year for its 40th annivetrsary if you want... 6. Blade Runner (1982) 7. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) 8. Jumanji (1995) 19:24 Let me guess... is next week some Predator movie or Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 (2023)? DANG!!!
i forgot how good this movie is so many cool practical effects and great atmosphere ps. i never thought that statue at the end was thade i thought it was just how they chose to show he was thades descendant
Similar to 'Superman Returns', the development of this film and all the directions it could have taken are very interesting to read. I was expecting if the 'Apes' franchise was to be revived after this film for it to be another take on the 1968 film so the 'Ceaser' trilogy was a very nice surprise.
What i love about this one over the originals is how legit ape like the apes are here. In the originals, the apes are basically just weird looking humans, in this version, theyre legit still ape like, they have the agility and mannerisms of apes.
Preferring when movies take big swings and miss rather than taking no risks at all and boring me is literally my justification for why I enjoy most movies that are generally hated by modern audiences and people almost always respond, “why do you like bad movies?” 😅
Why does Helena Bonham Carter always have SO MUCH FRIGGIN CHARISMA in EVERY movie she's in, DESPITE being in full makeup and wardrobe???? God I have such a huge crush.
8:18 that is such a deep-cut specific Star Trek reference and I love it. I mean ik it sounds obvious to any ST viewers but im pretty sure most non-Trekkie ppl dunno who leah brahms is.
Probably not taking suggestions, but I do have a query. Why has this channel never covered Gladiator? Universally I’m sure everyone agrees it’s one of the all time greats, but I bet it would make for one hell of a video.
Is this movie good? No. Is it so bad and over-the-top that I watched the whole thing through in utter disbelief? Yes, and honestly, that's about as good. As Roger Ebert said... "I ask two things of a movie: that it be good, and that it not bore me. This movie (Barb Wire) wasn't good, but wasn't bored."
The reason I watch these is I learn something new. Watching this when I was a kid, the time stuff flew over my head. Now, it makes the film and my watching a lot better.
While I'm not the biggest fan of this Movie, as a fan of the Franchise I'm so happy you covered it. Kinda wish you did the Original, and More old Movies in general. A lot of classics out there. OG PoTA is one of the best in my Opinion .
Another interesting little detail that gets overlooked but is so obvious when you consider it: The 'brand' used on the captured humans (something between a lower case Phi and Psi) is in the shape of the Oberon station viewed slightly from below. Which would make sense as that symbol was likely on all their uniforms (or remembered as a detail from the first survivors), so as the Apes evolved it became a symbol synonymous with humanity and their oppression of their ancestors.
I would love to see you do Iron Giant, if that's possible. My absolute favourite film, I watched it nonstop as a kid and to this day it still makes me cry.
Your time chronology makes sense, however it doesn't account for how Pericles was able to be the messianic figure of the Ape culture, unless I'm remembering it wrong and Semos was just a generic Ape god that the Apes mistook Pericles for when he landed. If that's the case, then who was Semos? What part about the Oberon going through the time portal made the Apes rebel, and which one among them was Semos? How did they suddenly learn to talk? Maybe I need to rewatch this movie.
The one thing I would admit I would love to see after seeing how great the ape make-up FX, is how would Andy Serkis would look like as Caesar but with practical make-up and with the war paint of "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes". That would look wicked cool.
This was one of those movies that I just didn't like-but what stands strong is *really* good. Like those practical effects and costumes are just INCREDIBLE

Just saw this version of planet of the apes for the first time. Never saw the older ones just the newer 3. This is the best one I’ve seen so far. I hope they make a number 2 with mark wahlberg in this storyline
Never did understand all the hate for this movie, and my first experience with the franchise was the original run when I was growing up in the 80s and they had weekend sci-fi features on tv. (Beneath was pretty out there, not gonna lie haha) It hit all the right beats for a PotA installment and the subversive callbacks were 'Leo pointing at the screen' memeworthy before the meme was a twinkle in its creator's eye. They were done with a knowing wink, but also in a way that showed love for the original movies. Even the ending, we knew there was going to be a twist, it's in the DNA of the series, but actually seeing it for the first time and how it played out was incredibly fun in the theater, the whole 'wow~ they actually went there...' experience. $68 million in its opening weekend, the second highest EVER at the time, and $362 million against a $100 million budget shows it at least managed to generate some good attention too, not to mention a few award nominations at the BAFTAs for the incredible costume work and the ever-spectacular Elfman's score at the Grammys.
I remember seeing this in the theatre as a kid and loving it while I was watching it, then discussing it with my Mom on the car ride home and realizing it didn't make much sense and I actually didn't like it at all by the time we got there. I didn't have the words for it at the time, but I now cite this movie as my first experience with "critical analysis". And that was when my childhood ended...😅
I always liked the idea that the apes brand the humans and the symbol is the shape of the Oberon space station, reminds me of how the apes would have that symbol of Caesar pass through the generations of apes.
Another EGA video, another film I haven't technically seen as a film, only as an NC "review". Should probably get to watching the first film and the reboot/remake series. Once again, an interesting and fun video! Keep up the great work and take care!
Also, it's the one that's closest to the original book. The ape planet is not earth and the ending where he goes home to find thr earth taken over by apes, those are from the book. The, it was earth all along, thing was an invention of the movie.
Oh man, I haven't watched this in YEARS. I thought it was cool as heck when it was out and the make-up still looks awesome. And Mark Wahlberg's default semi-confused expression suits this film perfectly
Ironically, famous film critic Roger Ebert actually liked the Twilight Zone-esque twist, he mostly complained the story was badly structured and tonally all over the place: "It's an action picture and a satire of an action picture. It's a comedy and then it gets serious. It's a social satire and then backs away from pushing that angle too far. It even has a weird intra-species romantic triangle in it. And it has a surprise ending that I loved, even though Matt Drudge spoiled it last weekend with a breathless "scoop." The movie could have been more. It could have been a parable of men and animals, as daring as "Animal Farm." It could have dealt in social commentary with a sting, and satire that hurt. It could have supported, or attacked, the animal rights movement. It could have dealt with the intriguing question of whether a man and a gorilla having sex is open-mindedness, or bestiality (and, if bestiality, in both directions?). It could have, but it doesn't. It's a cautious movie, earning every letter and numeral of its PG-13 rating. Intellectually, it's science fiction for junior high school boys. [...] Burton's work can show a wild and crazed imagination, but here he seems reined in. He's made a film that's respectful to the original, and respectable in itself, but that's not enough. Ten years from now, it will be the 1968 version that people are still renting." Which is sad, there's a lot that's commendable about this film. Might be on the lower end compared to the 2010s trilogy and the OG film, but there's still a lot here that can be enjoyed by people, of which I am likely one. Besides, it at least allowed Planet of the Apes to remain relevant after over two decades of hiatus from the franchise. If this film didn't happen, maybe we wouldn't have ever gotten Caesar's story.
For all of the problems with this movie, I adore two things. One, the ape makeup is some of the most realistic and stylized I've ever seen in a feature film, and two, the costumes are very intricate and detailed. Both together make some talented practical effects.

Exactly, despite it's flaws at least it ain't a shot for shot remake of the 1968 film it does it's own thing with the story and special effects.

Win, not Sin!
Another interesting little detail that gets overlooked but is so obvious when you consider it:
The 'brand' used on the captured humans (something between a lower case Phi and Psi) is in the shape of the Oberon station viewed slightly from below. Which would make sense as that symbol was likely on all their uniforms (or remembered as a detail from the first survivors), so as the Apes evolved it became a symbol synonymous with humanity and their oppression of their ancestors.
Please, I BEG of you!
Finally make "Everything Great About Legend of the Guardians, the Owls of Ga'hoole!"
At least we know the channel doesn’t shy away from Zack Snyder so there’s hope.
Day one of asking for everything great about Rio
My dad was an Extra in this film! He brought home a "rock" he used to brain a human, a torch from the night march scene, and an ape helmet!
I will never really understand the hate for this one.
EGA WolfWalkers, Power Rangers 2017, E.T. The Extra-terrestrial, and RRR!
18:41 No. Not true. Nope. Not listening. Nope. Nuh uh. Nah. Nooooooo. 😂
The one thing I would admit I would love to see after seeing how great the ape make-up FX, is how would Andy Serkis would look like as Caesar but with practical make-up and with the war paint of "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes". That would look wicked cool.
Susan Gibney is a beautiful human.
This was one of those movies that I just didn't like-but what stands strong is *really* good.
Like those practical effects and costumes are just INCREDIBLE
Please do the Adam project with Ryan Reynolds and walker scobell!! It’s really funny!!

Just saw this version of planet of the apes for the first time. Never saw the older ones just the newer 3. This is the best one I’ve seen so far. I hope they make a number 2 with mark wahlberg in this storyline
for a movie from 2001, I'm still to this day amazed by the make up and prosthetics for the apes, It absolutely holds up.
I think if they had done a sequel, they probably would have had it in an alternate universe kind of situation.
Never did understand all the hate for this movie, and my first experience with the franchise was the original run when I was growing up in the 80s and they had weekend sci-fi features on tv. (Beneath was pretty out there, not gonna lie haha)
It hit all the right beats for a PotA installment and the subversive callbacks were 'Leo pointing at the screen' memeworthy before the meme was a twinkle in its creator's eye.
14:49 I agree, CinemaWins guy, "would" too
If I can appreciate anything in this movie, it's the rounded silver early 2000s sci-fi aesthetic in the production design.
Does anyone else immediately try reverse image searching the next week teases to try and figure out what they are?
It's easy. You just a screenshot of it, crop it, and google image search it. It almost always works.
Pretty sure the one on the right of the potential "next week" videos is MI: DR Pt1, but no clue on the left one.....
We've got a new Ghostbusters movie on the way, so it's past time to get started on the series.
I appreciate all of your Star Trek references you keep throwing into your videos.
Finally! 😂 Now please do the planet of ape trilogy with Andy Serkis! It's the best and it will be perfect since the new sequel is coming out soon.
"Everything GREAT about The Iron Giant" next please
Another EGA video, another film I haven't technically seen as a film, only as an NC "review". Should probably get to watching the first film and the reboot/remake series.
Once again, an interesting and fun video! Keep up the great work and take care!
Every Great About The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975).
Its seems fair since CinemaSins covered the film
5:51 Showing teeth to a chimp is a sign of a fight gonna start, that's why she reacted that way
Also, it's the one that's closest to the original book.
The ape planet is not earth and the ending where he goes home to find thr earth taken over by apes, those are from the book.
The, it was earth all along, thing was an invention of the movie.
Huh, I always assumed this was the same planet we spent most of the movie on, just in the future. Weird
Episode 133 of asking for Princess Bride!
It'd be like, three parts.
@@ninjabluefyre3815 You say that like it's a bad thing! :P
Can you do one for Klaus?!?! Netflix Christmas movie it's gorgeous!
If he does, he probably won’t do until December
Klaus is incredible!!❤
Oh man, I haven't watched this in YEARS. I thought it was cool as heck when it was out and the make-up still looks awesome. And Mark Wahlberg's default semi-confused expression suits this film perfectly
I liked it even when people told me it was bad.
Please do Everything Great About Wish
Ironically, famous film critic Roger Ebert actually liked the Twilight Zone-esque twist, he mostly complained the story was badly structured and tonally all over the place:
"It's an action picture and a satire of an action picture. Ten years from now, it will be the 1968 version that people are still renting."
Which is sad, there's a lot that's commendable about this film.
