Funny thing about the warden’s death: the hieroglyphic that the scarab jewels are embedded in is of a man screaming in pain - directly telling you what the jewels do.
The warden died to the only trap in Egypt that comes with a warning label.

You could also say, they tell you exactly, because the scarabs are inside the painting, meaning he is screaming in pain, because of bugs crawling inside him.

I grew up in the 90s and I 100% agree.
Brendan Fraser's ability to pull off Good looking action man but also being able to be goofy on the same movie(s) was an underrated quality of him.
Also, i think Evie's damsel in distress works with her character of never having done field work, which is mentioned in the beginning. In the second movie, she's had multiple adventures and is a mother, so more experience to be a badass
This. PLUS, it lets us see her growing and evolving into herself between the two movies. It's great!
Plus she becomes more like her mother, whom she described as an "adventurer".
I don't think Evie's a damnsel in distress because she is actually useful and integral part of the team. They would get stuck without her knowledge, experience and skills in everything other than combat. She's the one who SAVES everyone else in everything else that isn't fighting.
It is a shame people can't appreciate nor even notice such characterization... Everyone always has to be "badass" in the super masculine way of punching and kicking when I'd say most women would find Evie incredibly badass and relatable without the fighting specifically because that's not what most women find that cool.
@jesustyronechrist2330 that's a fair assessment, but I think the point of "damsel in distress" is that she kept getting kidnapped. Not trying to diminish her part at all in the party. We all need a wizard, a bard, and a fighter in a group lol
Surprised you didn’t win Rick attempting to save Beni at the end. Even after everything Beni did to him and his friends, he’s a good man and genuinely tried to save Beni’s life
Especially the actually kinda sad "good bye Beni" when he knows he can't be saved.
Knowing his fate he would have been better off with that wall crushing him..much less pain.

Beni and Jonathan are perfect examples of how you can have a comedic relief character, but not have them be a total idiot. Beni and Jonathan are both pretty smart when they’re backed against a wall.

This is me and my wife's favorite action movie. Partly because my wife is a librarian and the whole drunken "I... AM A LIBRARIAN!" line from Evie sets her rolling every time.

One of the biggest failures with Mummy 3 was the recasting of Rachel. Her and Frasier had such palpable chemistry, that its absence was a distraction in part 3.
I read somewhere she wasn’t happy enough with the script to be tempted enough to come back. I think even if Rachel came back, it still would have been a lacklustre movie BUT it still would have been good in my eyes because of said chemistry of the cast.
I can't blame her, the script had big flaws.
I vastly prefer the ancient China aesthetic compared to Egypt so for me the film should have worked but it just doesn't.
It could have been set in WW2 and been about stopping the Japanese from resurrecting the Dragon Emperor and trying to use him as a superweapon, set it actually in the Far East and show how dangerous the voyage there was, show the surrender of Singapore or the Christmas surrender of Hong Kong (real historical moments which would make the villains actually seem imposing as they topple the dominant regional power)
Instead we got "the yak yakked" and a bunch of forced convoluted CGI being chased.

I for one like to pretend that there is no Mummy 3... Two was enough for me. And honestly, I'm fine with just the first movie, as I don't feel like the second one was even really that necessary.
If I remember correctly the reason Jonathan is as he is with his care-free attitude but then also knows how to shoot is because he's a WW1/2 veteran and it expands his character alot more.
World War 1, this is set before the 1930s. I appreciate how it shows three different combat veterans and their individual experiences. It's not just there as fluff. For a movie that is so goofy and tongue-in-cheek, it really rounded out the characters!

@@090giver090on top of that, all the guns that were used in the film were period accurate, with O’Connel rocking French weapons when in the Foreign legion before falling back to some American M1911s, which; again, hints where/who he served with.

The second Mummy has what is probably my favorite comedic moment from my youth, when Jonathan tells a "redshirt" that the totem/fetishes will protect them from the pygmies only for him to immediately get stabbed in the chest and look over at Jonathan like "dude! wtf?!" to which he just blurts "I'm sorry!" and takes off. Pretty sure my theater missed the next several lines of dialogue into the laughter haha
1:57 I always saw it as one of those things where the Egyptians thought their civilization would be around forever, so they could just put the ancient Egyptian equivalent of a "Genocidal Mummy, Stay Out" sign and no one would be stupid enough to open his casket.
honestly, the fact that people didn't take the warning more seriously speaks volumes about humanity.
Considering that Ancient Egypt civilization was already nearly 2,000 years old when this movie takes place, they had good reason to believe that the knowledge wouldn't die out!
@@dellytancyl524How so? ancient curses aren't real, it'd be really stupid to take them seriously. Even if you're just talking about people in the film, it'd still be silly because they 'know' that those warnings are superstitious nonsense.
The whole structure of the movie is built around the premise that they *are* real and the characters are caught off guard because there's zero evidence they exist, and then they have to deal with whatever supernatural shit they uncovered.

Too many people don't stop to consider the full picture before barreling head first into horrible mistakes. it would have made for a far less interesting film but imagine if those men in the movie had chosen to even question the warnings?
@@dellytancyl524Is it a proven fact that ignoring warnings is an innate, hard-coded aspect of humanity? Lots of people do it for sure, but is because they're human, or is it just an aspect of their personality that may or may not be shared with other people.
Some warnings are just completely imagined superstitions though, no one should take them seriously because the supernatural is definitively not real. That was the point I made in regard to the movie, the premise only works because people know that's all made up. It'd actually be _weirder_ for the characters to take it seriously because up until the events of the movie, none of them have ever seen any evidence of such a thing existing.

There was this beautiful moment in the 90s when cinema created true adventure movies and they were all amazing. The Mummy is the perfect example of cinematic FUN that peaked in the 90s.
Agreed - this is also when you get gems like True Lies, Con Air, thé Fifth Element, Thé Matrix, Indépendance Day, Twister, Volcano, Armageddon … the list goes on

Definitely an endearing quality. I can't think of another leading man who pulls it off with his level of sincerity.
There was a great film in just about every genre in 99: we had films as diverse as American Pie, Fight Club, The Matrix, Blair Witch, The Green Mile, Iron Giant, Lock Stock, Toy Story 2, 10 Things… they weren’t all bangers (it was the year of the widely panned The Phantom Menace, after all) but the diversity has taken a nosedive over the 25 years since then.
My favorite detail: Rick being an absolute legend and Quip master yet getting flustered when trying to "flirt" with Eve.

The scene with Beni praying in multiple languages is one of my favorites. It gives him some character development...where he is willing to literally anything to stay alive.
Next to Indiana Jones, The Mummy is the gold standard of the fun adventure blockbuster.

The first 3 Indiana Jones and this movie make a fantastic quadrilogy. I'm not sure any more recent movie from that genre comes close to these ones.
The fact that there are nearly 100 wins by the time the monster shows up is a real testament to how wonderful these characters are.
When Rick is tying the rope and hits the Earden, I always felt like the first time was accidental, the second time was more testing the waters because the Warden still hadn't moved, and the third was completely intentional because he's STILL not moving so why not.
Some fun facts about the opening scene: the buildings look CGI but they were actually miniatures, the dude getting scarabs poured on him and flailing around looks real but is actually CGI (yeah, the guy too, not just the scarabs), and the look of terror on the Imhotep's face as his head is getting wrapped up is the actor's genuine fear
Edit: these are things I learned about recently myself and the guy who said it may have explained it wrong or simply been incorrect, hence why I seem to be incorrect about the guy being CGI
also although the actors werent egyptians they are speaking actual ancient egyptian which is win in my book

The guy flailing was real. They just mapped him with a wireframe mesh so that the CGI scarabs would accurately track against his movements

I love this movie.
It is implied that Jonathan was a soldier in WW1 (and is probably suffering from PTSD). It is also implied that Evie's and Jonathan's mother might be Egyptian. Also RIP, Stephen Dunham. To quote Wiki: "He had originally auditioned for the role of Rick O'Connell and was unsuccessful, however, director Stephen Sommers liked Dunham's acting enough to cast him as Henderson instead." It is thanks to the whole cast being really good and charismatic that even the thankless roles of the Americans are memorable.
I'm pretty sure there's a line in the movie that outright states that their mother was Egyptian. Granted, it's been a little while since I watched it, and I could be wrong.

This and the Mummy Returns are two of my favorite movies ever. Everything just blends and works so well together and it's always a good time whenever it's on. Me and ny family quote this movie all the time, most often "Patience is a virtue! Not right now it isn't!"
I had never seen them before but in 2002 I was going to be recovering from surgery, so I bought my first DVD player. Someone I knew gave me the Mummy. Recovering from surgery and laughing that hard are not exactly compatible, but whatever. Wouldn't have missed it.
One of the things that has stuck with me for a long time, and that I think represents very well the ethos of the channel, is Roger Ebert's review of the Mummy.
«There is hardly a thing I can say in its favor, except that I was cheered by nearly every minute of it. I cannot argue for the script, the direction, the acting or even the mummy, but I can say that I was not bored and sometimes I was unreasonably pleased. There is a little immaturity stuck away in the crannies of even the most judicious of us, and we should treasure it.»
And I think there something important behind this, since it's very easy to dismiss things but a lot harder to just let go of judgement and learn to enjoy ourselves and what we like.
This is sort of fun adventure movie I feel like we’ve been missing lately, and Brendan Fraser is like the king of adventure movies.
There are indeed historical records of an Imhotep in ancient Egypt, but he was not an evil sorcerer/mummy thing. He was in fact an architect, scholar, inventor, doctor, pretty much a jack of all trades.
And the ancient Egyptian people never used slaves to build their tombs. They used skilled builders and paid all their laborers well and gave them all benefits and when they died they were buried with their pharaoh
I never knew that second part. That's really neat!
@@SayybleThe only problem with being buried with the Pharaoh's is they didn't wait for you to die of natural causes. Once done with the building of the Tomb it was "Off With Their Head's"!
Imhotep is even in Civilization 6 as a great engineer.

The chair throw is cool, but Rick's double "It's all in the reflexes" in the sequel, with snake followed by knife, is the ultimate hero move.
The only thing I have to say about the Mummy Returns is that they got the deity wrong. Anubis is actually a very compassionate deity who is there to guide souls through the Duat with compassion. He wouldn't be interested in world domination like they portray him in Returns. If it were any deity in Egyptian mythos, it would be either Set, the evil god who murdered his brother, Osiris, or it would Wepwawet, the god of war.

Good movies all around. Absolutely love them; I just hate that Hollywood loves to make Anubis the bad guy when he is nothing but an unbiased spirit of justice and compassion.
TBF this happens a _lot_ with gods of the dead. There's a couple more that are more along the lines of 'Whelp, stuff happens. Let's get you where you need to go as painlessly as possible.' that pop culture twists into all consuming psychopaths.
Humans in general don't exactly welcome death, so they associated everything death related as bad. Imagine, you're hoping your love one will pull through and here comes Anubis, at that point you don't want context, you want the fucker to go away. so you tell everyone you can if you see this Anubis guy, it's game over. eventually, like a game of telephone, things gets distorted overtime and everyone start associating Anubis with death. then it's tall tales arounds.
It’s the same with Hades. Every modern media portrays him as a bad guy while he’s probably one of the most chill Greek gods

Can't wait for you to do Returns. I would like to say that a win is absolutely needed in this one and the second one for Brendan and Rachel's on screen chemistry. I really feel like they created one of the greatest couples in cinema history. They are the very definition of relationship goals.
Honestly, I loved Evie in this movie. I adored her flightiness. She was competent, smart, but also silly and not perfect. It's a cool personality type that's hard to hit without making the character the 'snarky' one.
The big change watching this movie as an adult is realizing Jonathon probably served in The Great War
I love the theory/unofficial backstory about Jonathan as a WWI vet as a means to flesh out his goofiness while also being a) very comfortable with death and b) more than competent in battle

My dad got this movie on DVD for my mom when it came out in the 90s and we watched it over...and over...and over. I was obsessed with literally every character (even The Americans), because they were *ALL so attractive*. Even Beni's sense of humor was funny to me as a child! This movie is an absolute diamond with a star studded cast.

I heard somewhere, never confirmed it, that apparently Brendan Fraser isnt a big internet guy, and never knew how big his fanbase had gotten after his career did what it did so that's why he never tried coming back
Yeah, it has nothing to do with being uninsurable since 2009 for anything but bit parts and voiceovers. No one wants to work with an unmedicated schizophrenic. Would you? Aronofsky had to have a completion guarantee just to cast him and the shoot was only a month.

The warden played by Omid Djalili. An Iranian-British stand-up comedian who spent a decent chunk of the late 90s and 2000s being a generic Middle-Eastern comic relief character. Gladiator, Sky Captain, Mummy, The World is Not Enough, Pirates: At World's End etc etc etc
I will always love the scene in the tomb where Rick grabs Eevie and then sees Imotep for the first time. Rick just screams back at him, then blasts him with the shotgun. It is perfect

Ikr I missed put on it when I was a kid because I thought it was a horror movie based on the preview but now this one and the sequel are some of my favorite movies
Back when cable TV was still a thing used by people regularly, this movie would come up at random and I NEVER, not ONCE, did not drop literally everything I was doing to watch it in its entirety. I hate horror movies but this one balanced the absolutely terrifying monsters and bugs and horrific maiming of its cast by being so funny it hurt and just 100% in love with itself. If Shaun of the Dead is my favorite movie then this is very easily #2.

If you believe Brendan's version. Simon Crane, the stunt coordinator took the drop through the trap door, not Brendan.
He likes to tell people in bars that he got the scar on his throat from the hanging stunt, but it's from Thyroid surgery in 2012.
Watched this yesterday, It really aged well. The Mummy 1 and 2 are timeless films. The horror, action-adventure, comedy, and cute romance. What more do you want? Plus the characters are memorable. They’re classics.

Her willingness to die, believing in Imhotep's ability to resurrect her, makes her behaviour at the end of the sequel all the more baffling. Like, she's willing to do a brutal suicide is something she's fine with, but simply _risking_ her life to save him is too much?
Maybe she's salty about it taking him so long to resurrect her?
I think when she kills herself she knew she was already as good as dead when they caught her.
In the sequel she actually has the choice, and chooses self-preservation.

I also just remembered, she's not the original Ankhesenamun in the sequel, she's the reincarnation. That probably changes things a bit.

Frazier has said why he was "blackballed". He got injured on the mummy 3 and also was SA by one of the directors. It really messed with his mental health.
Fun Fact: Erick Avari, the actor who plays Dr. Bey, also played Nicholas Natchios in the 2003 Daredevil movie and he (not very) recently played the role of Nicodemus in the series The Chosen.
Also one of (maybe THE) only actor to play the same role in Stargate and SG1.
How did I not put 2 and 2 together? I already knew him as Master Rahool in the Destiny games, so I had to make sure it was him in The Chosen as well. I must skipped over or not paid enough attention to remember the Mummy bit.
I never put together the part where Jonathan said how the city would sink with a switch with the Ending doing that!!

I've seen this movie probably 100 times as a kid, but haven't watched it in probably 15-20 years. Boy, it sure has some great lines and directing that I would appreciate a lot more now that I'm older.
When i was a kid i watched barbie in swan lake and the troll gave the definition of true love.
"True love is very rare, it's when two people love each other more than they love themselves."
To me that the scene where Rick and Imotep are dangling in the chasm and Evie runs to save Rick while Anaksunamun runs to save her own life, is the best example of true love presented in media ever.
It shows the contrast between normal and true love as both Anaksunamun and Imotep are thinking of themselves whilst Rick and Evie are thinking of each other.
I really hope you add this in the win counter when you do the sequel.

One thing I wanted to add. The roller coaster tie-in at Universal is AWESOME. Good ride, complemented by pretty cool line experience as well.
It's a FREAKIN AWESOME ride! I visited Universal back in 2015--we're actually trying to set a trip to visit later this year, I hope it's still there!--I remember being completely blown away by how great the ride was despite the fact the movie was so old. I thought it may be outdated but that coaster was easily my favorite. The lead up to the ride was great and the coaster itself is really thrilling and fun.

I actually adore Evie's damseling here, bc it illustrates this movie's biggest strength: the ensemble covers each other's *genre weaknesses*. They all play in each field, but they only really *win* for their team in their strengths.
Rick is *the* Action/Adventure guy, but lacks in the other two genres. He can quip just fine, but doesn't have much agency in Comedy moments, and can only get a far as stalling the Horror with his physical prowess.
Evie has power in the Horror and Adventure genres; she's the historian and linguist (and outright *beats* Imhotep's sandstorm because she wasn't threatened by it) but has almost no answer to physical problems, and she tends to end up on the losing side of jokes.
Jonathon has Bugs Bunny-level Comedic agency, literally able to solve small off-genre problems through jokes alone, and is passable at the Horror and Action when assisted, but his full commitment to Comedy makes him also sometimes a liability.
Ardeth is Action/Horror; knowledgable in the supernatural and proficient in a fight, but too serious to quip, though he still gets to play as the butt of a few jokes.

I’m an Italian med student and I’ve spent these last six years studying, training, doing exams - failing exams. There were many breakdowns and some very low points along the way when I could see no hope or joy around me.
But I’ll never forget the lunch pauses spent in front of your videos and how your optimism reduced the stress I was under. You honestly cheered me up when I thought nothing could. It may seem silly, but it really meant a lot to me.
Today I had my last exam. This doesn’t mean I’ll stop watching these videos, of course, but as this chapter of my life comes to an end I feel the need to reach out and tell you how grateful I am for having found this channel. You’re doing a great job, keep it up.

I do love how this video praises Brendan and how happy we are to see him back and kicking. I remember watching this movie on repeat as a kid and was always surprised to not see Brendan in movies in the later years, so hearing how he endured hell due to...well, _all of that_ is just devastating. But again, good to see him kicking it.
Yeah, it has nothing to do with being uninsurable since 2009 for anything but bit parts and voiceovers. No one wants to work with an unmedicated schizophrenic. Would you? Aronofsky had to have a completion guarantee just to cast him and the shoot was only a month.

Nice touch how all three main protagonists get a thing at the end that distracts them from escaping. Evelyn with the book, Jonathan with the treasure, and Rick with Beni.

I was going reply to that actors were Egyptian with the fact the Ptolemaic dynasty (which includes Cleopatra) were Greek, but doubled checked Imhotep was 3rd dynasty
What makes Beni so good is that the actor sells it so well. The way he says, "Your strength gives me strength. ", at the opening battle scene is one of my favorite moments in the film.
Every rewatch is SO good, the setting the characters the actors, I adore all of it, even the Americans that were just set to fuel Imothep, the fear they feel is so palpable. The fact that not only do Rick and Evy love each other they LIKE each other, the tenderness there, Rick could listen to her talk for hours. Jonathan my beloved. Everyone here has a purpose and is plot relevant, Fraser's background acting is such a highlight. I could go on forever. Greatest movie of all time. Brendan Fraser was great in _Doom Patrol_ in later years (and the episodes on Titans that crossed over with it), though for most of the series it was mocap and voice for Robotman. And I really need to watch The Whale.

Possibly one of the greatest movies of the 90s and it was such a massive cultural hit.
Equal parts Indiana jones and a horror film but didn’t take itself too seriously.
There was so much excitement about the 2nd movie we built a theatre in my city that was Egyptian themed inside and out.
Polished stone floors, large snake sculptures, the mummy skull with smoke and fire coming out of it and other set designs from the movie itself.
The theatre opened along side the 2nd film and had every single theatre reserved for The Mummy returns and people were lined up outside the theatre and around the block to get In.
The only other there was so much excitement for a movie was Star Wars Episode 1 and Sam Remi Spider man.
I really wish more movie theatres did that sort of thing for big movie events.
Random fun fact: Evie’s character was named after lord Carnarvon’s daughter. The man who funded Howard Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb.
And for fans of the the 1932 original, there are plenty of nods and Easter eggs in the film.

What I've always loved about this movie is that everything from the soundtrack to the set and costume design to the script just leans into the pulp-adventure tone. Hard.
Does it come off cheesy at times? Yes. Is that the point? Yes. Does it make it a much better movie in the end? Hell yes.
2 cool bits of trivia, Oded Fehr (Ardeth Bay) was meant to have a face full of tattoos, but director Stephen Sommers decided against this because he was "too beautiful to cover up" and during the scene with the mind controlled citizens, one extra was handed a brown cloak to wear that had "Alec Guinness, Obi Wan" labelled on the inside from A New Hope.
